You know it's kind of a pity that William Castle didn't go all the way through and shoot an alternate ending to the film. Would have made a neat DVD special feature.

he did this because the studio wanted a nice ending, so he did this as kinda loop hole, while he did the vote thing, and how he talked about actually shooting an alternate ending, it never happened caus Castle wanted his ending in the movie
Incredible, we'd never have this nowadays where you can participate with the movie and vote and choose stuff as an audience, this guy was a genius.. would be super fun to have something like this now with a movie, will there ever be another Castle who makes movie going more fun? the only gimmick at the moment is 3D glasses.
It wasn't real. It didn't matter what people did, the outcome was always the same, and the ending was always "no mercy". There is no "mercy" ending. The gimmick was fake.
ricarleite There is still some skepticism of whether the mercy ending existed, so it is still possible it did exist. as you can notice before he starts doing an exact count, there is a slight jump cut, so maybe there was another ending, but Castle's power of suggestion (and the overall hatred of Mr. Sardonicus) made the second ending hardly (if ever) used. and it was a cool and clever idea either way!
I loved how Krull got revenge on Sardonicus, I saw this movie last night on Svengolie, me and my Wife watched it, we voted no mercy. When Krull did what he did I was like "No he didn't". Dude was just like "Oooo, this is good stuff, ohhhh, don't mind of I do"! I lost it😂

Mr Sardonicus will be shown in addition to Macabre. You never know who might be back from the grave, maybe even William Castle himself counting the votes.
This film would have played far better without the gimmick of this punishment poll! If I get a copy of this, I will scissor it out and just let the film run on!
Oops, hate lazy writers and producers, but ole Mr. S. could have fed himself with a feeding tube through his nose... doh! Wouldn’t be fun, but he wouldn’t have to die and was already slurping liquids anyway. Regarding the mercy ending, there’s already plenty of footage within the movie to create a whole bunch of endings no problem.
Spoiler alert for those who didn't see it. Krull goes and tells the Doctor that Sardonicus still can't open his mouth or eat, the Doctor says it was all in his mind and that all he injected the Baron with was water, but Krull goes back and tells Sardonicus the train left before he arrived, then he sits down and starts eating all the food in front of Sardonicus and you see tears in Sardonicus's eyes, finally he loses his shit and tries to eat but can't and throws dishes everywhere and goes to the stairs and puts his head down by the railing. That's where it ends. Paybacks a bitch 😂
@Jaegar19Ultima I loved when Krull just started eating all the food right on front of Sardonicus, I knew he was going to do something, my Wife and I watched this last night on Svengolie, I told my Wife, "He's planning something, look at Krull, the wheels are turning".
Would've been easy. Have the alternate ending threaded on the other projector, and changeover to it if the votes requested it. Otherwise, continue to let the present reel run to the desired (punishment) ending. Had they set it up that way, I'm betting the operators would stop threading the alternate ending because it would never get voted for. Castle already knew this, so he bluffed the alternate ending. Showmanship.
They REALLY should've shot the "mercy" ending. Imagine buying the dvd of this movie and being able to choose the ending for yourself!

According to his daughter he did shoot it but mercy never won so it might've just been lost.

@PaulSebert I'm with you he should have made an alternate ending just so we could see what happens if the butler told him what sir Robert said.
I would have to bet he wouldn't believe Krull and go on a rampage that would have lead to him accidentally killing himself instantly.
That merciless ending was some god-tier punishment! Sardonicus got to experience a fate worse than death. And it was all in his head.

@alexalex3131 Problem was that a system to switch film reels on the fly, as this would require, simply didn't exist!
