  • Once described by John Waters as “the greatest showman of our time,” director William Castle best embodied that title with HOMICIDAL, his 1961 classic that introduced the first-ever “Fright Break” -- a 45-second opportunity before the film’s climactic ending for too-terrified audience members to leave for the lobby and have their admission refunded. Castle later added a “Coward’s Corner” to discourage viewers from taking him up on his offer.
The Packard Humanities Institute Collection is the largest known acquisition of theatrical trailers on film, deposited at the Archive by David Packard in 2009. This historically significant collection contains over 60,000 moving images and has transformed the Academy Film Archive into the world’s foremost repository of motion picture trailers.

When he first showed the film Castle discovered that people were sitting through a whole screening and then getting the refund after the next one. Castle solved this by using alternating color tickets. Unfortunately people still tried to get refunds so he decided to use humiliation. First you had to walk down a yellow line while Castle’s voice said “here come the cowards”. Then you had to sit in the coward’s corner where chicken noises blared while a nurse took your temperature. Finally you had to sign a statement saying “I am a Coward”.

Would love to see a playlist of all the original trailers from the past to the present that you great guys have from the archive. Not only for entertainment, but also educate film fans on how trailers were produced throughout the decades.

Castle an "asshole?" "not an oscar worthy film?" What the heck are any of these comments supposed to mean? The refund was a classic Castle gimmick, not meant to actually be acted upon, just for fun and to bring attention to the film. As far as "oscar worthy" why would anyone expect a little chiller thriloer to be a best picture contender? Somewhere a cuckoo nest has let their patients loose on the youtube comments section!

HOMICIDAL was not Oscar nominated like Psycho was.thats what should have the Oscar recognition sign for its trailer in which it doesnt.
