I’m an intp and basically I’d assume we’re like detective/stalkers to try to find the true identity of that person to make sure if they’re worth dating... probably just me?

Y'all crack me up. My husband (INTP) and I met online in an Astronomy forum. I had over 10,000 posts on this forum, and he read every single one of them to figure out who I am. Hilarious. But in all seriousness, he fell in love with my mind, and then it turned out we are physically attracted to each other as well, so win win. Those sites that say you should pair up with such and such a personality type are just wrong. I'm an INTJ and we'll be celebrating our 13th anniversary later this month.

How go you know if an intp likes you...
    1. We will talk with you.
    2. We will share a pov but want a conversation.
    3. We will share our sense of humor. Not just the sarcastic remarks.
    4. We will take in everything you say... heck many of us can repeat it back verbatim.
    5. We will want you to share space with us, our space. Not coffee not a movie. But our space... and we won't speak... we just want you in our space.
    6. We will mess with you, playfully
    7. We will give you the best advice we possibly can and help you achieve in what ever way we can. Do not expect anything that remotely resembles normal help.

@n Oh, I adore INTPs and have thought so much about them with INFJs conceptually and realistically (referencing my plethora of experience - starting from my first boyfriend when I was 16 who was an INTP to my last boyfriend last year to my good guy friend who is an INTP. Oh and a really interesting, assertive one that knows so much about INFJs - I met him via internet.
Advice FOR them - relationship issues
n INFJs open up like a flower, organically.
I will share some of my story with you to hopefully offer food for thought and insight. Keep in mind, I do seem to be a rather odd infj in some respects.
So. I was a lot like this INFJ you speak of with one INTP who pursued me last year. BUT. I was so reserved because I cared so much about what he thought of me & couldn't fathom how he was into me (which, sadly, I overcompensated in trying to appear so put together and worth his time, that I never had this mentality of "here's who I am. If you like what you see, then come into my world too. it's not going to just be me always trying to understand or coming to your world. We both have something real and unique to offer the other by being true to ourselves." So my interpretation of my past behavior is that my mindset at the time bit me in the butt because he never saw my wonderfully, disarming, zany, outlandish, against the status quo humor which speaks so much about who I am). The humor often comes with a sense of safety with the other person. This can come with understanding another person. We tend to fear what we don't know.
So what is needed to nurture this connection in order for the INFJ to open up?
The most success I've ever had with an INTP is my guyfriend I know currently. We message each other almost everyday now - it usually starts with memes! It's at a point of an ice give & take. And this can lead to sharing dreams and schemes 😂😉
What lacked in my last relationship and what thrives in my friendship now is just that - friendship and foundation. Don't force things. Don't wake up love before its time. With my INTP friend, we begin & continue to be in the ideal context - a part of a large friend group. It's actually a small college ministry and it just happened to attract a bunch of weird kids like us. There are so many more opportunities thru this shared, free space. We have group goals & projects we work on together. He admires how I talk with people and not at people (like he does, admittedly). So he wants to be the person to reach out to others and then I am the follow-up person. He sees me as an incubator. Through friendship, you can begin to decide if she is worth the patience which most likely will be totally, and unavoidably, necessary. INFJs can be the hardest to truly know, and require the most patience perhaps, but much like our approach to life, we believe in the quality choice and having a futuristic vision which automatically comes with patience. Now, one thing that is weird about INFJs is that we do tend to see most people through a very platonic lens. I'm a sapiosexual and it takes a long time for me to not only feel safe, but to experience depth enough to want to take action. There is the risk that even though you invest in the friendship, she may not end up feeling a romantic way toward you. But there is also the opportunity to maybe end up with a passionate and dedicated partner, both intelligent and deeply kind. Especially if you treat her with consideration, effort, and vulnerability. But I guarantee either way, you will gain a genuine, trustworthy, loyal, wise and fun and maybe lifetime friend who truly cares for you as one of her favorite human beings.
So, practically, if you can, find some other people you both enjoy and a space that feels like you can be yourselves, and get to know each other in that way. Find a subject that she may be interested in and share why you love it. For example, he knows I totally love psychology, so one time when he was talking about his favorite subject, comic book characters like Batman & The Joker, he explained the psychology behind them both. They actually were quite similar, and hid behind masks. It really drew me in and I hung on his every word. Also, INFJs tend to see relationships as very dynamic. So, for example, at least with me, let's say I'm given hugs each time I've hung out with the INTP the last five times. In my mind, i may still be wondering if he actually will want to give a hug the next time. I think we, as also with ENFJs, can come up with the silliest "but what if THIS time." Keep pursuing her and showing her patterns. Eventually she will conceptualize internally that you are trustworthy enough for even her to initiate.
I have some of the most deep conversations with my INTP friend and yet we also have some of the most fun. We are always pranking one another. One time we stayed up till 7 a.m. because I was chasing him with my weapon of choice. ... My chapstick. 🤣

    Observations from an INFP:
    - My INTP can struggle to stay in touch with his emotions, so he is often grateful of my Fi to help him with that. It is unusual to me that you guys can be so unaware of your emotions.
-He likes to DO stuff to keep his active mind occupied. It is important to him that we like the same activities. Sure, he can be lazy as shit, but I think he'd find it very difficult to sit around with me all day
    - Intellectual stimulation is very important. He liked that fact I beat him at chess so easily and I'm so eager to have in depth discussions about things. When we first met we skipped straight past the small talk.
    - Actions speak louder than words for him. He might not always tell me how much he cares, but he will show it in other ways.
-Usually, I have to tell him how I feel and if I am upset. From my experience, if an INTP doesn't pick up on how you're feeling, it's not because they don't care. You must communicate it to them, and you'll know if they do care if they actually take the time to listen to you.
    - It's very important to him that we share the same bizarre sense of humour. He says things that would really confuse other people, but with me he can be totally himself without fear of alienating me

As an INTP I'm far more aware of my emotions than my physical sensations sometimes. I usually don't realize I feel sick until I feel terribly bad. Though I sometimes don't realize I'm nervious until I realize I'm trembling or I'm having a stomackpain.
I get confused very often with my physical sensations and my feelings. I'm really bad at telling them apart.
My emotional state also changes how I percieve physical sensations. In some ocasions I've felt stronger and more pleasing physical sensations with very minimal physical contact with someone I like than when having sexual interactions whith someone I don't like that much.

Also, like you said, I find I can know a girl if I work with her. Working together to achieve a goal or finish a job provides the most comfortable environment to communicate with a girl. I can't start conversations anyother way. Probably because it takes the focus off us both and makes it less obvious.

Our system is sorta like the scientific method.
We want to observe you in your natural environment first. A Control. Know your interests, how you behave, etc. Gather as much information as possible.
Then we can introduce ourselves like an independent variable. See how you behave around us, what you show and hide, how you change, what more information we can get.
For example, with her friends she is very high energy and loud. When talking to me, she is very quiet and reserved. An interesting reaction.
Reconnaissance. If we can save ourselves (and you!) from an embarrassing and awkward situation by learning about you BEFORE we make a move, we will do it. Like a military that scouts an area before moving, so they dont walk into an ambush.
But I leave information breadcrumbs behind me, hoping that someone interested in me will study them and learn about me. Give the information I wish the ones I observe would give. But nobody cares about me, and only an INTP would care about such breadcrumbs, so, RIP.
And truly, we are undyingly loyal, even to our detriment.

That process sounds all too familiar, but for a female intp i feel like it’s a lil more complicated. I feel like I’m always trying to avoid or that I have to avoid the opposite sex because, like you say, I don’t want to invest myself in just anyone. And I feel like that could happen with anyone who might approach me, and I don’t want to be the cause of the rejection they might feel. It’s like if I show any interest whatsoever that gives them a foot into my door when I wasn’t sure I wanted to invite them in at all.

We are so easily confused by others cause we tend to have deep and meaningful conversations right away and people think that's because we're interested in them. But it's because we're bored with the plane and ordinary of this world. And because we avoid conflict we tend to avoid any type of miscomunication that could lead to misinterpretation by the opposite sex, it's exhausting. At some point I realised I couldn't protect other people feelings at my own expense and just be myself. Sociable, deep, and analytical. An INTP

  • @Laura.D3101
    @Laura.D3101 4 ปีที่แล้ว +19

As a female INTP I can be super extroverted with everyone and initiate conversation easily... as long as I'm not romantically interested in them!
The very moment I realise someone managed to break through my very well disguised inner shell of a heart I panic and I shut down completely, becoming the most annoying idiotic version of myself. I can't talk to them, make eye contact to them, let alone flirt with them. Just avoid them, they're too much work for my emotions. So if you want to know when an extraverted INTP likes you, see when it stops trying to be a smartass around you and avoid you at all costs.

I have similar problems. When I was 21 through 26, I had a job at a blood bank which required me to talk to a lot of strangers on a daily basis, make idle chit chat with them and co workers. It was horribly difficult for a year or so,until I figured out a sort of conversational flow chart in my mind. I learned that if I see someone in a bar or etc and want to strike up a conversation; I observe her passively for a few minutes and wait for someone else to say something awkward, then I chime in with what I consider to be a funny way of diffusing the situation and respond to what she is likely feeling at that moment. This works well for me.
Example, I was sitting in a greyhound station waiting for a bus at 8pm or so. This was a very high crime area with homeless people, scary looking strangers and etc. A very attractive 20 yr old lady say down next to me. I just observed and kept reading my book. A very young very awkward, but thuggish looking guy walked up to her and kina stammered "Excuse me, would you be offended if I told you you are beautiful?" Poor guy knew he was totally screwing it up. So I immediately chime in and say to him "No, infact I'm flattered, but your not my type." She laughed hysterically, awkwardness was diffused, she stayed next to me and chatted the rest of the nite. She bored me, so I didn't pursue it further after we got off the bus. To ease the sting for him, and to teach him how to do better, because we've ALL been there, I followed that comment by saying "Always lead off with a joke, beautiful women almost always know they are beautiful. "

Lol. Makes perfect sense to me. INFP girl here with a crush on an INTP. I naturally like to reveal things about myself and hold deep discussions about life, philosophy and abstract ideas. I thought in dating that was generally a disadvantage...🤔 Because you're supposed to be all "mysterious" and "difficult to get to know"... etc. [rolls eyes at the "dating rule book"]
I find I love an INTP's insatiable curiosity, love of knowledge and analysis, rebelliousness and quirky sense of humour. I even like their "social awkwardness"... (I find it adorable!)
I suppose, being a sapiosexual, I'm just naturally attracted to INTPs...Lol.🤣
And I get the whole thing about not wanting the other person to feel rejected - I have often agreed to go on a date with a guy just because I didn't want him to feel rejected and then when he wants to start dating long-term (but I know he's not what I'm looking for), I don't know how to remove myself from the situation.

we have weak Fe; we cant pretty much deal with someone coming right into us, making us like them and then just leave us. so we pretty much assume we should be as careful with others as we would like them to be with us. the girl you mentioned with the tattoos probably didnt mind the situation as much as you thought she did -- because people with greater emotional intelligence than us INTPs deal better with these sort of scenarios than we do. after all i think this is all about our unawareness of that fact that even tho we might be smarter and more intuitive than most people for some things (Ti plus Ne), we are worst than most people dealing with emotional situations. the friend you spoke with, saying things like 'gosh, you dont understand', probably would deal with the situation better than you as an INTP. exactly because he would know that some things are just emotional and not really meant to be rationalized and that's fine and that tattoo might know that as well and might be just doing ok. we must all see that for these sort of things, other people are more mature than us. and also that some situations are not meant to be solved as chess problems.

The way you sweep the floor is WAY too cartoonesque to be effective. You would get fired if that was your real job. ;p
The long term perspective is pretty accurate for INTx in general.
As for being interested in someone, then forgetting, then remembering, then reconnecting, then disengaging again, I find it's a general characteristic of NTs.
For example, a breakdown of my mind on a typical me-day: Ideations/concepts: 70%, Actions/objects: 20%, Emotions/people: 10%. If I happen to toggle the figures for actions and emotions by spending time with friends, then I will need a full day of Ideation to recover. If I swap ideations and actions because of an immediate disaster sort of situation (i.e bush fires, loss of close ones, civil unrest/riots, etc), then I shut down emotionally for months, until the world makes sense again.
This is an algorithm that took me 28 years to figure out, but I'm glad I did grow from these life experiences.
As you said, being in the same "natural" environment seems to be THE biggest factor in getting to know people for who they are and connecting with them. Hence the whole "LDR" sounds totally counter-intuitive and conducive to unsatisfying relationships to me, even when I knew the person beforehand.

This is pretty spot on! Knowing whether someone’s character is a match is a huuuge thing. It’s also usually picked up from from tiny tiny hints like the way they look at others when they talk, whether they roll their eyes, or their pattern of speech and how individual it is. If I mentioned these to non-N types they’d probably think I’m being too judgemental. But it usually plays out as expected so it’s worth heeding.

Lol. I only recently found out about different types. Things I do are starting to make sense. Like starting a conversation and a minute in saying, sorry that's all I have. I'll just leave now. That annoys me. Why end it before it starts? I probably know the answer to that. I go in like 007 and leave like MrBean

the indirect information gathering in a group setting is sooo true, am doing it rn and no one has any clue that soo much info is being processed in my brain and calculations being made.
We steer the conversation in a subtle manner such that the questions we have is answered without asking

If someone comes here to find out about intp's you came to the right place.

Bro i get your point on Christianity. Being an INTP Christian like you, a woman with Christian beliefs and morals is a great package and makes my analysis mich easier. All i need to do i see how seriously/loosly she takes her beliefs. Other than that we have good views on what a relationship should be like and the virtues and duties required.

    I "pass people off"
Like I'll go up to someone to talk in a group setting and find out I dont want to be in this conversation anymore. What I'll do is pull somone else into the conversation and when the two get to talking I talk to someone else to leave or just wait til my silence causes them to ignore me and I can walk away.
Or I make them dislike me by being myself. It gives me practice.

Oh my gosh, these are flipping hilarious. And totally on point. This is why I've always had what my mom refers to as a 5 year plan, lol. You become friends, and keep it in mind that nothing could happen for 5 years till you know the person fully to stop yourself from potential disappointment. Also works great if your waiting on God. I too can imagine maybe not a wedding but like 10 years into marriage, what kind of life, how many kids all from just observing, watching work ethic, personality etc. But I need to see if for a long time before I believe it. Crushes aren't real, its just temporal infatuation with the idea of someone. I ain't about that life lol, its a waste of time. I need to know there's a future with potential before I put you on a pedestal. Btw the age thing. Holy crap, yes, same. Its so annoying.

I have to comment despite this video being 5 years old: your aside on pudding, 5:33, cracked me up. Perfectly and spontaneously illustrated the tangent-upon-tangent nature of an INTP brain, as well as how anything can be fascinating (at least to an INTP) if you think about it deeply enough. As an INTJ who's getting to know and is really attracted to a particular INTP, I have been trying to "calibrate" to his weird questions. He may not be fully aware about how much data I'm gathering on him as he gathers data on me...

When I care about someone, it's almost like I study them. It's hard to keep it from coming across as creepy, but really it's because I'm driven by the desire to make them happy (demon Fe), and my way of doing that is to understand them from every perspective and angle, inside and out, at every level of analysis (savior Ti).

I get what you're saying and here's what I do in that kind of situation. (I'm INTJ by the way and maybe it's not the perfect solution but here it is). After I've started a conversation and feel the need to walk away, I let the conversation run its natural course first and after the conversation has slowed momentum, I say something like "Alright, well, it was nice meeting you" and if they insist on continuing, "Sorry, I really am, but I gotta use the restroom" where I would decide what I should do about the situation if she is still there. Like, you could decide to leave if you are okay with that and say that you gotta go for this reason or that reason but maybe we will talk again sometime (emphasis on being friendly but not leading them on). Basically what I'm saying is treat them like a very temporary new friend/encounter that you don't want to lead on much. I have many encounters with people every day usually in customer service in my cashiering job so I've learned a few ways to deal with people who want to talk when I don't want to.
Edit: I'm probably inexperienced with handling people in a personable manner. This might leave some people with a bad feeling but from what I have seen it works for what I want it to. I try to acquaint people's feelings and insecurities and I try hard because it really isn't natural for me but the trying makes all the difference for me. I think I could leave the conversation/ relationship if I gave their feelings good consideration and took precautions to leave on the best terms possible. If I tried to do it, I feel better even if they don't like where it ended. Because I did what I could. I'm not going to fake desire for a relationship that I know won't work out. I just move on after that. Lol, I know that sounds cold, systematic, etc. but I don't want to hurt their feelings going too deep or by going too little into a conversation/relationship. By the way, I don't expect this to be the best solution because other people would probably have better advice than me but I just wanted to share my thoughts

Intj found me an intp. We didn't bother with the small talk when we met. We went straight to the values & we knew.
He has lots of hobbies to keep his mind busy. But he doesnt expect me to share all his same interest. But we get each other. Its weird but cool at the same time. He's also very affectionate which is something i appreciate but not used to.

Here I thought the 'planning marriage' thing was just something I did with romantic prospects. It's not impulsive, ever, but when I set my sights on someone in a romantic context, I always find myself reasoning out, based on whatever information is available about them, how life may unfold were we together long-term... often with uncanny accuracy based on past entanglements.
It's that Ti thing, I guess, but when you internalize so much thought, one develops a way to outline life like it were the plot to a really boring, pedantic movie that nobody would watch. When I still like the plot to that movie despite all the boring bits, that's when I realize someone may be a real prospect for a long-term relationship.
Unfortunately, I don't know how it looks from the outside when I come to that conclusion, though I imagine there would be facial ticks or body language cues to indicate my satisfaction with the result. Or you could ask, if you were feeling bold enough...

Infp in love with an Intp and he is the kindest sweetest human. And his humor is perfection. He is protective and looks out for me in the sweetest ways or like if I talk too loud when I’m excited he gently shushes me and I could never be offended even though I’m embarrassed. I was with 2 infjs before and I love them but their bipolar type of personality is so annoying how they desire to be the superhero then complain that they are saving everyone it’s a bit much…. But the INTP is forthright which I love and I think if you have a tough enough skin as an infp and the INTP truly loves you they’ll be forthright but not cut you. I’d hate to be on the receiving end of a bad arguement. Anyway with the long winded infp rant… I give INTP men 2 thumbs up ❤

Literally dealing with this right now at work. "She's cute, but I don't know anything about her. Well, most of the younger girls that work here are college age, so that could work. Yeah, but I don't want to ask her on a date without knowing anything, that would be weird. How do I find out about her without being creepy? What if she has a boyfriend? Well maybe I could play it off. Ok, I'm not that smooth. Do I need to be smooth, though, if she's turning me down? I'm not even in a position to get married. Well, but I wouldn't propose on the first date. Yeah, but if it's a nice relationship I don't want to drag her along until I have my life together, either. I don't want to hold her back. She'd probably break up with me. I can't deal with that kind of rejection anymore. Maybe I should just stay single. But I want a companion and a family! AAAAAGH!"
