The Evolution of Watercolor - A Closer Look

  • The history of watercolor in its various forms dates back far beyond what most people think. Through the eyes of an artist, viewers trace watercolor’s roots from early cave paintings, to Michelangelo, to the Impressionists, and into the 20th century.

    Just want to say how much I enjoy the videos you do for us non-artist types who never took an art history course. From the video scenes you select, the soundtrack, your script/narration, and even the occasional graphic embellishment, they exhibit real craftsmanship and a passion for the subject matter. Thank you.

    Jill, another great video. I can't over state the excellence of these videos. Your narration is so pleasing, soft, and informative. back in the before times, way back, my wife and I had the opportunity to visit several of the museums in England and Europe. I was so great to see the works that I had studied in various art history and art appreciation classes. And, yes, viewing the brush strokes of a Van Gogh was so much more impressive that viewing a color image.

    Thank You for this video.
    As someone who had two years of art history in college and the son of a watercolorists who has work on permanent display in a main county building in Portland, OR., you've done a magnificent job of giving a brief synopsis of the evolution of watercolor painting in different techniques and media.
    It had to be difficult keeping your choices of artists and specific paintings to so few.
    This is the first video of yours I've watched but, I will be subscribing and watching more, for sure.
    I want to add one more thing to my comment, and that is to say your narration, especially your voice, is very beautiful to listen to. You have a very natural speaking voice that invites you to listen and enjoy what you are saying unlike most educational speakers and narrators. I could use your voice for my business voicemail recording and my business would probably increase tenfold just from your voice answering my phone.

    W. Trust Richards painting is amazing.
    Reminds me Hans Gude, another 19th century painter, from Norway. His work worthy to be include in here.
    Actually Renaissance was named after the rediscover of ancient greek art (sculptures and architecture), and the wish of putting man in focus center. Perspective in painting is one of the ways to transcribe this will too.

They make it as a stretched canvas as well and I think even pads. Here's a helpful link about using them: www.art-is-fun.com/preparing-a-watercolor-canvas/. There is also a watercolor gesso (or ground) that you can apply to a surface yourself. Daniel Smith and QoR both put one out. If you had a regular canvas or canvas board, you could add 1-2 layers of this product to make it water media capable. Here's a link about this product: danielsmith.com/watercolor-ground/. Yes! Good catch. This is one thing that stuck out to me while doing all of the research. Why do we limit ourselves today? The same with using black. I'm actually teaching students to consider using white and how it can be implemented in my upcoming class.

      I know, I know, Timothy. It killed me when someone first brought this up to me. I did include Thomas Girtin (British artist and rival to Turner), but I'd like to see if I can squeeze Turner in some day. I've debated updating the video to include him, but it means losing all video stats. Still...I may when I have time. I may also try to add John Robert Cozens. Of note: Both John Glover and John William Hill were both British-born.

      Jill, thanks for the thoughtful reply. I didn’t mean to besmirch in any way your lovely presentation. There are some wonderful surprises in it. There are/where so many watercolorists, it’s hard to include them all, but Turner was surely the sun that his contemporaries and future modernists orbited around and were influenced by.

    • @JillPoyerdFineArt
      @JillPoyerdFineArt  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Perhaps I worded that poorly. Certainly, artists were painting in the East throughout their history. What I meant was that around the turn of the century, watercolor (colored pigment, as opposed to primarily black ink and occasional color) became more popular around the turn of the century in those regions. In China, I believe it was around the Tang Dynasty (618-907 AD). That's what I understood from my research.

  • @carlpen850

    I never ever liked anything by Charles Burchfield... from the 1st time I saw one of his works when I was only 19 to this very day... the only thing his stuff does for me is make me a tad ill. I don't see where he had any mastery for the medium at all.
    I think to include him in this video does a disservice to all the great watercolorists that you omitted... Cotman, Turner, Eakins just to name a few off the top of my head.

    • @JillPoyerdFineArt
      @JillPoyerdFineArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, we do all have our opinions. I'm not wild about his work personally, but he is considered an important figure in the medium (like those you listed) and he did offer a new approach in his work. There were so many I didn''t include - just not enough time. That says something about the medium, though doesn't it? So many amazingly talented people throughout history producing masterful works in watercolor.

    • @carlpen850
      @carlpen850 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ Jill Poyerd... I wasn't really trying to be offensive to you... I've seen Burchfield's work included in many books on art and the authors all justified his work as masterful... I just don't get it... I couldn't find strong design, color harmony or any mastery of handling the medium... I know some critics lauded him for his sense of movement but to me that kind of movement brings on a case of sea sickness... I know I know it's just my opinion in the same way that I can't even look at an anchovy... as a matter of fact I dislike anchovies so much I refuse to be in the same room with one... at least not on the first date.
      PS - I came to this site because of my love for the medium and as someone who has worked with watercolor for over 40 years I can admire and appreciate those who have mastered this art form... I even like some of the works by John Marin... but I don't think I'll ever understand Charley's stuff.

      @JillPoyerdFineArt  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      "...to me that kind of movement brings on a case of sea sickness" - lol! I do understand, Carl. There is a museum in my region that features a specific artist that's highly acclaimed, but for the life of me I can't "see it" and I'll probably never like their work. I am kind of sorry I didn't squeeze Turner in, but alas. It is as it is.

    Very good presentation, but extremely subjective and unanalytical . It can be the foundation to produce a scholarly documentary on watercolor.
    A question should be answered: why paint with watercolour like it is oil? When I see a watercolour painting I expect it to look like it was d one with that medium. It seems to be a waste of time and paint to use watercolour liked oil paint.

    • @JillPoyerdFineArt
      @JillPoyerdFineArt  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This was one of my first videos and the aim was both to inform as well as to offer my perspective as an artist. So it was intentionally a little more relaxed. Regarding your question about watercolor being used like oil: I guess I would ask, why not? Isn't art about reflecting your perspective using whatever medium and whatever style you enjoy or feel conveys the message best? Plus, when seen in person, watercolor does have a different feel to it than oil, even if painted in what appears to be a similar manner.
