  • Passionate electric car advocate and protagonist of the movie 'Who Killed The Electric Car?', Chelsea Sexton gets a lift to the airport, except the cameras went wrong and I don't have that bit.

    ABOUT CARPOOL:
    Carpool is an online show hosted by Robert Llewellyn (Red Dwarf, Scrapheap Challenge, Fully Charged), who gives a wide variety of passengers a lift in a hybrid or electric car and they talk. It's as simple as that. Previous guests include Stephen Fry, David Mitchell, Charlieissocoolike and Jim Jeffries.

    Re-watching this in March 2020 and I'm so pleased that Chelsea is now representing The Fully Charged Show at events in America. Hopefully she will appear at every Fully Charged event from now on. In this video she speaks of her contemporary life, and it continues until this day, promoting electric cars and clean power.

      In February of 2020, I was able to meet and talk with Chelsea at Fully Charged live in Austin, Texas. She spoke about her involvement with the EV1 during one of the presentations at the event.

    I'd like to see a Carpool with Nikki Gordon-Bloomfield. I also love seeing Chelsea Sexton on Nikki's Transport Evolved every so often.

    @DanFrederiksen Felt I should explain that these shows have been put on TH-cam as an afterthought. The original series was on iTunes and my own page llewtube.com, and this particular show has had over 72,000 views. The whole series of Carpool (76 episodes) has had well over 3 million downloads. I'm now recording a new series to go on the Dave channel in the UK.

    I just watched the movie ("Who killed the electric car?") and I agree that it is a lot less conspiratorial than I expected. Obviously the car industry and the oil industry have close ties but both industries have an interest in the status quo. It's very expensive and risky to change your business model, it's a lot easier and safer to just continue in the same footsteps you've been successful in for a long time.

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but the entire drawing power of electric vehicles is that the electric power to run them can be generated from something like nuclear/hydro/geothermal/wind power rather than petrochemicals. Beyond that, converting types of energy through chemical-thermal-motion-electric-chemical-electric-motion in an electric car vs. chemical-thermal-motion for an internal combustion engine is simply no contest in sheer energy efficiency. I don't see how it would physically be otherwise.

    @DanFrederiksen Mr. Llewellyn has been a fixture on TV screens for decades. Mainly in Britain, though the 'Red Dwarf' series he featured prominently in was shown on PBS back in the day, and 'Scrapheap Challenge' (or should I say 'Junkyard Wars') ran on TLC.

    @Phage0070 Of course running an EV off the grid is more economical than an IC engine, else we'd run our houses/EVs from standalone diesel generators.
    ICs are only convenient because we can fit a (really) large amount of energy in the tank so it doesn't matter that we convert the energy to motion at 25% efficiency (after refining crude oil at huge energy cost), thus we get the "desired" range.
    Please see principals of conservation of energy and also "Who killed the electric car?" for details.

    This is great. I just discovered car pool this morning, via the Ross Nobel DVD. I had no idea it was an informative show. I loved this, but just one thing... you didn't explain what the problems of using hydrogen are and I don't know where to go for reliable information on the topic. I'd be grateful if you could point me in the right direction.

      Hydrogen is a small molecule, and a gas, that _passes through_ many solid materials. 5% hydrogen is explosive when mixed with 95% air. Also 95% hydrogen is explosive with 5% air. Also you can ignite it by the static electricity you get by rubbing your hand through your hair. That's all you need to know.

    @roidroid Maybe she's talking about "if you put that same [magnitude of chemical energy derived from a fossil fuel] in a gas car". It's a common theme in the debate for electrification of transport, i.e. using fuels in an efficient energy chain, founded on proven chemical and physical principles, from 'well-to-wheel', as it were.

  • @roidroid
    @roidroid 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    @7:38 "You have to pay attention to where you get your electricity from. But even if it's comming from oil or coal, it's still cleaner than if you put that same fuel in a gas car."
    Was there ever a coal powered car? Maybe she's talking about "coal seam gas" or a Fischer-Tropsch coal-to-liquid-fuel process.

    It's not a conspiracy, that would suggest it's hidden or complicated when it's neither. The majors will change radically or watch new entry makers take over. They're walking a fine line. Development of EV's is growing fast. There's an electric motorbike GP championship going from strength to strength globally. Last year they were lapping at fast 400cc speeds, the year before, fast 250s. Within 2-3 yrs, certainly less than 5, anyone wanting to go fast on a bike will be on electric. YEEHAAAA!!!

    "each of those suspects basically just served their own interests, they didn't need to conspire..." Um, that's what conspire means. From the dictionary: "to act or work together toward the same result or goal". It's annoying that the word has been ascribed this new meaning in recent years, which is essentially "crazy, unlikely plot conceived for pure evil".

  • @DanFrederiksen
    @DanFrederiksen 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    somewhat interesting, shame so few have watched it though. need to run to a wider audience somehow. we need a PR wizard on the green side.
    as for conspiracy theories, that's wishful thinking to not want to deal with that. there is corruption in many high places and they are not above a bit of coordination so that's naive but I understand why you wish it isn't so. just not sure it helps us to be naive.
    just take a small example of the few remaining EV1s not allowed to drive on the road..

    Electric vehicles are more expensive and worse for the environment than just buying a regular mid-sized vehicle burning diesel. Coal burning power plants charge them, batteries that have limited service life and have to be disposed of and replaced. The money you save on fuel doesn't offset the cost of the electric hardware added to the sticker price. Hybrids are an even worse.

    • @Somun-a
      @Somun-a 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BS on the "worse for the environment" part. Did you even watch the thing. Here let me help you: 7:31.

      Allen .Berge I see, so according to you, it is much more ecological and energy efficient driving an ice car with less than 39% efficiency and expelling toxic fumes than an electric vehicle with more than 90% efficiency that doesn't poison the air. Nice thinking, and the best to understand why human progress is so slow. As already has been said, go to 7:31 to understand it better.
