- Richard Bruce - OLEV - Carpool | Fully Charged.
Recorded before the recent #EUref in the UK, a fascinating Carpool discussion with Richard Bruce, the EV driving head of the Office of Low Emission Vehicles (who usually cycles to work).
We talk about future transport and contrary to many expectation, the fact that encouraging the uptake of electric cars, taxis, busses etc receives cross party support.
Also, and I checked, OLEV has survived the recent political upheavals in the UK and still exists.

Richard was appointed Director of Energy, Technology and Innovation at the UK’s Department for Transport in August 2016.
It would be nice to see Robert interviewing Richard again in 2021.
Please tell me this isn't just a one-off. This is SUCH a good program and I've really missed it, it would be great to see more episodes :) .
I remember watching your normal 'vlogs' years ago, and now so many people do daily vlogging and do very well from it (Casey Neistat). Also Jerry Seinfeld does a 'carpool' type of show too. You really are a trend setter!

Such a shame you stopped carpool, I remember seeing a list of people for the future episodes including Adam and grant from mythbusters, would have been great. I hope you do more but I have a feeling the next time I will be watching Bobby is in red dwarf 11.

hey come on kryten, when he said "replace it with something cleaner" about 8 mins in why didn't you pull him on his lies n say "we'll actually the amount of co2 produced just to get the raw materials to make the stupid cars batteries ect is more than a landrover puts out in its entire life time" ?
Perhaps because that's a lie. CO2 payback periods are on the order of a year to two for the entire vehicle vs a landrover.
I'm sorry, but these so called policies are an insult to those who spend quite vast sums keeping classics on the road, and as soon as they crack the HFC vehicle, cars like the leaf and hybrid deathtraps like the Pious will thankfully be dead. You do not want to be driving a Pious in the wet, because if you need to brake in an emergency situation, you will be involved in an accident, and self driving vehicles still rely on the nut behind the wheel, as proven by that idiot killed in the Tesla, not paying attention, and a flawed system that couldn't tell the difference between the sky and the side of a box truck!
These 'so-called policies' aren't aimed at 2016, but are preparing for the future. When the grid will be much cleaner. When only BEVs and a few Hybrids [if any] will be the only new cars. They may not have been able to legislate well for the present day, but that is because legislation takes time and technology moves fast. As of 2018, Tesla are within 1-2 years of a fully self driving vehicle, and it won't matter if you fall asleep in the driving seat after that. The earliest that the 'informed analysts' suggest fully self driving will be possible is 2025, so just imagine how far behind legislation is.
And the HFC vehicle won't be around in a small vehicle for years, so BEVs are the way. And preferably so anyway. The oil companies would be the ones selling the hydrogen, and the consumer will be better off independently making their own electricity from their rooftops.
