    I think the single smartest thing this series has done is had a giant, shrieking monster in the first video and the first video only. Just the knowledge of what any of these people are actually in danger of encountering really ratchets up the suspense.

      There are several ways I've been breaking this down. Honestly, I saw that video a few weeks ago because it ended up in my feed. I started it, and couldn't look away. I'm still confused about what this is all about, but my guess would be the art of exploiting ones fear. The ending, falling from the sky and almost feeling immanent death after the creature chased you around, was very real feeling. I also think about it from the creature's point of view, having someone, like an alien being show up in your domain, where you are familiar with the layout and are potentially acting out of fear. That's kind of a terrifying thought in itself. But fuck that thing, it's evil and doesn't deserve my sympathy. Plus he kicked me out of a spaceship without a parachute. I'm still salty.

    I love how in this series, there’s so many opportunities for jump scares that aren’t taken. It really builds up the tension and feeling of dread and is a breath of fresh air from the usual ‘jump scare every 2 minutes or it’s not scary’ template.

    I haven’t seen any comments on this yet so I just wanted to point out how effective the use of a VA is here! Usually in analog horror series nowadays all the narration is done by text to speech, but the use of a VA (and a good one at that) makes this more immersive than it already is. I think this video in particular is the perfect representation of the backrooms. It's supposed to be a feeling of unease, tension, and uncanny dread due to liminal space rather than scary monsters and jump scares. I feel like the internet kinda screwed up by latching onto a generic Slenderman type bipedal monster that screams and chases you as "the entity" instead of something far more immaterial and ghost-like. Something whose presence can be felt and has agency of actions, but whose form is rarely physical but is changing and hard to comprehend when it is.

    • @denverdubois5835
      @denverdubois5835 2 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      Have you ever seen the Russian science fiction movie "Solaris"? (It was remade in the US a few years ago, but the original is much better.) You wrote, "...something far more immaterial and ghost-like. Something whose presence can be felt and has agency of actions, but whose form is rarely physical but is changing and hard to comprehend when it is." This is the heart of "Solaris." It's about a group of astronauts who travel to another planet, and what they experience there--a series of ghostlike shifts in perception and apparitions, their own loved dead somehow returned and alive again, and more. These mysterious, frightening events are the work of the planet's living ocean, itself a sentient being which is deliberately influencing their minds. It's incredibly eerie, haunting and fascinating, full of classic "uncanny valley" moments. Based on your comment here, I think you'd like it.

    • @KevinJohnson-cv2no
      @KevinJohnson-cv2no 2 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      So in essence, you want the backrooms ITSELF to be the entity, toying with inhabitants like the time-skip and noises we see here? Because just a constant corridor of "liminal spaces" by itself certainly isn't unsettling that much, just boring. There has to be some threat lol

    @danieleriksson6498 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2238

    Key takeaways:
    When the guy with the camera enters the narrow hallway it might be a form of "Null zone", because the rest of the team didn't hear/notice him whilst being there. It might very well be that he had already "disappeared" and thus was unable to be noticed. The red wire the rest of the team was carrying dissappeared, perhaps indicating that he was gone for an unditermined amount of time (the team gave up on finding him, and thus went back through the portal.
    The darker room might indicate the precense of imperfections with the backrooms design (imperfect calcuclations), as the hallway leading to its enterence shrinks in height. The room differs due to having different wallpaper, no lights as well as distorted objects (large and small wheelbarrow).
    When the individual is in the "theater" area, automated subtitles show "Applause".
    The individual must have survived getting lost, because the last schematic shows the room he was in as a place for the portal to open up, the "threshold" linking "Standard" with the "complex" (hence the found footage). As he arrives to the door he is heard with a mix of laughing and crying (sign of relief), this together with an alarm activating when he spoke indicates this is a part of protocol to retrieve lost personel.

    I have a theory for the room with the tree wallpaper and the wheelbarrows. It may not be a good one. If this whole place was created by something that doesn't quite understand human architecture, could it be whatever "it" is trying to simulate the outdoors? You have a house with "trees" surrounding it( the wallpaper), and fairly normal items you might find in someone's garden, an axe and wheelbarrows. One of the windows in the house was even made of glass. Could be entire wrong but that's how I seen it.

I think the reason something uncanny is frightening is that it presents that a thing is trying to deceive us to let our guard down. The implication of course is horrifying. To put so much effort in deceiving us to make us vulnerable implies that the effort in preying on us must be at least equal to this effort in deceiving us, to make up for it. An infinite uncanny maze, so infinite horrors.

      I think the creepiest part is how uncommon these places are. Similar to the outside area from pitfalls, it's just down a hall while the majority of the place is typical yellow wallpaper backrooms. Like it's a hidden area for experimenting with things you don't quite understand and don't want anyone to see yet.

People in those cases have a tendency to disappear when they're last in a group or whenever there's a point of separation. Sometimes they're found alive with memory loss, but most of the time they're either found deceased or never found at all.

    This feels like it's straying more and more from the actual Backrooms lore and I think it's way better for it. I feel the tension and suspense in these videos, I feel way more terrified by the concept of this place, than I do by the actual lore of the backrooms, maybe part of it is because of how gamified it all sounds, where everything is categorized by levels, with highly specific and detailed ways to go into other levels, with generic loot and things like that. While most of backrooms content is like "oh yeah be sure to pack a few bottles of Almond Water before going into this level", this series makes it all look way more alien, something eldritch and unknown, instead of just some glitchy game.

    • @NotSomeOrdinaryGuy
      @NotSomeOrdinaryGuy 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I personally think that kinda ruins it. The more you try to explain somthing the less scary it becomes. Because that implies that it can be understood and in fact people do understand them. It also implies that people have been through the whole thing and mapped it out. It ruins the mystery and mystique of them and makes them FAR less creepy imo.
      Edit: I also hate how its explained as a glitchy game with "levels". other than how you get there; I think that fits pretty well. I feel like it shouldn't be explained at all and just left as this mysterious, senseless space just outside of reality.

    So I watched found footage 3 and I have a little theory. Before he got separated he heard a crowd of people 2:53 and right before he gets separated he says “hey!”.. in FF3 we know that the guy who got trapped was able to talk to someone from the other side of reality or whatever, the real world, what if the same thing happened here and the crowd couldn’t hear him because well, its a crowd. Another thing to kindaaa back this up is at 41:46 in found footage 3 the guy in the other side says “wtf” and we hear this sound and screaming which could maybe be correlated to the glitch the guy in this video experienced just less intense? Also in FF2 when the green thing happens near the end of the video it could also be that i don’t really know. One more thing, we know that in first contact someone says “there’s an obstruction”, in faultline we know that first contact causes a hugeeee earthquake, fires, power outages etc, and in missing persons report there’s a scene that says “if anything blame him” to me it seems like there is a “higher power” that is intruding in project KV31?? Maybe the bacteria was the obstruction (probably) and since they created a doorway to the back rooms it’s causing all of this to happen?? Idk but that’s what I was thinking about.. I’m currently rewatching the entire playlist and later tonight I’m gonna make a list of all of them in order (ik there are playlist out there but I want my own “source” and there are new vids out that aren’t in those)
    Edit: also I remember in pitfalls some text appears in the screen which adds to my “higher power” theory. I don’t remember all of it off the top of my head hence why I’m rewatching this series l.

    My personal theory on how this version of the back rooms operates is: The scientists creating the back rooms knew that if they created space from nothing, it would be a completely random jumble of random materials. To avoid this, and to make the rooms more livable, they gave their “gateway machine” rooms to copy (this is supported by some of the images taken outside the backrooms as they seem very reminiscent of the rooms that we have seen inside the backrooms) . As we all know, this template idea sort of worked. With hallways seemingly becoming the dominant form of the backrooms. As seen by the very orderly hallways near the “gate” compared the the random hallways, the farther away one goes from the gate the more random and warped the rooms become. Here’s what the scientists truly forgot though. Their template rooms they gave their machine to reproduce had bacteria in them.

    5:31 this right here is perfection. I like how fake it looks and feels, pretty much like a bunch of .jpeg pictures clumped together mixed with somewhat realistic CGI.
    When the camera pans over to the left is a bunch of .jpeg weird looking ass objects like the wheelbarrow and an axe, then the .jpeg house further ahead to the left, just stamped on a wall... there's just something amusing and odd about fake looking objects like that just lying around. That can only enhance the overall 90s "strangely/oddly real" feeling of it. I wouldn't dare to further elaborate such a particular feeling.
    I somewhat feel like this whole "fakey" feel of it is kind of missing in Kane's newer videos as they're getting more realistic - that even actual actors are being introduced more and more - of course I don't really mind it, I still find the newer videos amazing, though I must say they're missing this very specific "fakey .jpeg feel" should I call it.

Towards the end of the video he's being pulled up by his team, but the very last clip shows that it suddenly stopped and the communication coming from his team is absent. He could have possibly warped in time and it could be a hint because the other person on his team mentioned the "null" zones earlier in the vid. Even more freakier would be that if its actually Marvin that the entity is imitating if he warped back in time and gets killed by the creature anyways. There were a number of interesting things to point out in this video. I probably missed a whole lot but what I got was this.
    1. The backrooms has multiple names in this universe and the public may already know of its exsitence. The tape said that it is prohibited to use names such as the backrooms in the public. this could either mean that they are still hiding it from the public, or it could mean that the public already knows, but government officials are trying to suppress the information by making government employees not use the slang names, and instead use the term possibly only known to govenment employees (project KV31).
    2. The backrooms does not seem to have a fixed layout. I already suspected this by the strange way the first videos layout was, but this video pretty much confirms that the backrooms shifts its layout because the guy in the vid tried to backtrack only to find a completely different place.
    3. The area from the archive video appears to be some sort of server room. This is just something to point out for people who missed it. That room he found was in the archive video. In the video you could see the window with the same computer at it.
    4. The backrooms appears to either activley pull people apart from eachother using tricks, illusions, or teleportation, or have an entity in it that does so.
    5. The backrooms has a number of areas that differ from the main pattern of yellow wallpaper rooms. When I first saw the found footage video, I thought the different area Kane went to was the creators interpritation of level 1, but it seems like it may have been either a place created by Async, or some random place similar to the one seen in this video that had the wheelberrow. The strange noises coming from behind the wall with the houses painted on it may have been sounds coming from the real world but this is purley speculation.
    Anyways, just wanted to organise my thoughts and figured I may as well share them with everyone else. If you have anything to add, or anything to correct me on, feel free to let me know in a comment.

      I have one thing to comment on when the people entered and the guy got separated we found a place very similar to the place he entered from at the end but it wasn’t the same when he exit The back room by the computer rooms so the back rooms can apparently generate the same layout. by the way good results on everything else👍🏻

      Look at the description, 02/29/1990 the 29th of February is a leap year day but on 1990. There wasn’t a leap year, so the character could’ve transported to a different universe

      We already knew that the backrooms weren’t linear, it’s on the wikidot but other than that yeah you’re right.
