Syma X5HW Altitude Hold Camera Drone Flight Review

  • This upgrade of the popular Syma X5SC/W includes an effective altitude hold feature to make FPV flying very easy. Buy it here www.banggood.com/Syma-X5HW-WIF... or here on Amazon amzn.to/2hNNBg6 And buy spare batteries and parts here www.banggood.com/search/x5hc-x...
    This quadcopter uses WiFi with your smartphone to allow real time viewing of in flight video. Yet it still has surprisingly good control and FPV range for a WiFi based FPV flier.
    Pro's
    - Binds with the X8C controller if you want increased range! And the phone attachment clip fits snugly to the top of the X8C antenna. But the X8C controller does not have an auto-center stick. You'll need to manually do that (not very hard to do).
    - Effective altitude hold feature that helps the pilot maintain focus on his/her flying FPV flying, and less on worrrying about impacting the ground.
    - Range of both flight control and FPV range seems to be much greater than the advertised 30 to 50m range. I flew well beyond the advertised range through much of the above video, and still maintained video reception and flight control.
    - Has headless mode.
    - Stable flier, providing relatively smooth aerial video.
    - Does not require FAA registration as it weighs less than 250 grams.
    Con's
    - Proprietary Syma battery connector prevents using third party batteries. But you could change the quadcopter's power connector to a standard mini Losi connector if you wish to use the widely available generic (and cheap) Syma X5C batteries.
    - Does not have one key return. However, not a big loss as this feature is not really effective on quadcopters that do have it.
    - Photo and video resolution is relatively low at 0.3MP/640x480p. This is an inherent limitation of WiFi FPV fliers.
    - Video recording would occasionally stop for no reason. But this could be a fault of my cheap $49 phone.

    Now that I'm retired I don't have a lot of money to throw around on my R/C habit but I did go order one of these from the link in your description. My first ever order with Banggood and so far I'm really impressed as within 6 hours of my placing the order I got a "your order has been shipped" e-mail. And the price was a bit cheaper than the best price at Amazon. The first thing I'll probably do when I get it is swap out the battery connectors and upgrade the battery but when you compare the features of this thing to the quads we had to build ourselves 5 years ago it is amazing how far they've come in just a few short years. Can't wait to get mine. Thanks for your great reviews.

    Plenty of people are complaining about this but honestly I cant believe how cheap this is for how good it seems. Battery connection isn't an issue, just change or make an adapter. Seriously, can't believe how cheap it is! Another great vid, keep up the good work.

    This in the review i've been waiting for! :) Thank you! Not happy about that proprietary battery connector though. I assume you could do a mod easily enough and replace that connector with a standard Losi Micro connector and use bigger batteries. Would you recommend this as a first/beginner FPV? (I already have a Syma X5C - 1)

    you don't have to turn the quad off and then back on to re calibrate the headless you can just bring the sticks to the bottom and to the left the lights will flash until you let go of the sticks.

    Good that it has altitude hold but I'm in agreement with Bill, I wouldn't mess with or buy a quad with WiFi for FPV. Looks like

    Hi 101,I just picked up one of these as my second Syma quadcopter, the other being the X5C. I got this one as I wanted the altitude hold and headless mode. The altitude hold works great, but otherwise I've been having some trouble with headless mode. How exactly do you enable headless mode? The instructions are not clear and I may be doing it wrong as I find the unit less than responsive at times. Also I think the rate needs to be increased, so I need to know how to do that also. I know it is the left button on the controller, but do I hold it down or tap it to turn on headless? What about increasing the rate?I too am having trouble with the app and wifi camera setup. Mine not only stops recording, but also loses the camera connection altogether. The screen goes blank and a message says "camera not connected" which is not true, its plugged in. I'm done with the FPV, if I knew I'd have looked for the X5HC. I prefer the chip and to wait to download the video later.Thanks in advance!

    I recommend the basic X5HC version to a buddy as a "learning trainer" quad. He got it, and yesterday, I took it out. He found some upgraded batteries that are 1200mah, and it gets 15 minute flights! Unfortunately, those same LiPos won't fit in the old X5C-1. Anyway, I wonder if you, or any of your subscribers feels that the X5HC (the new altitude hold version) has a similar problem to the old X5SC, i.e., a problem going into the wind? When I was flying it, checking it out, there was a pretty stiff breeze, and even in High rate, it was barely holding its own. Seems to fly okay otherwise. Just concerned that it has that same wind penetration problem that the SC had ... Anyone???

    The battery connector appears to be a standard JST connector. JST is far more standardized and easier to find that the connector Syma uses on the X5C and other quadcopters.
    There are a number of single cell lipos that come with JST connectors. Some, like the nano-tech and graphene are much better than stock Syma batteries.

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Michael V It appears at first glance to be, but unfortunately it is not a red JST connector.

  • @JonathanDPhotography
    @JonathanDPhotography 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    have a quesstion when you store the lipo for a week.... for ex. Your are flying on fri then wont fly it till next fri do you leave the battery at a full charge or since i dont have a actuallly charger after charging since flight time is 5-7 .... after full charge run the quad for 2.5 then store? 2nd are we able to use the X5SC Camera on x5hw?

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not a good idea to store Lipo's at full charge. When the X5C stops flying, the residual voltage in the battery is appropriate for storage. Recommend recharging a low power battery the night before a flight.

    I don't know what's up with that battery connector. I just got one today (review model), mine is the same as your's, but I just watched Dustin's review and his has the old Syma's traditional "propieritary" battery connector(?) I remember when I bought my first X8-c, it had the "T" connector, bought a second one, it had bannana type plugs!!!! For crying out loud... "can we all just get along?" Lol... I wish we could just have one type connector per size class (or power class) for ALL quadcopters. (I have a ton of X5 batteries, so you know, the quad's about to get modded!!!) Good review, thanks. • @theslydog59
    @theslydog59 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hey, new owner of an X5HW. How did you go about changing the 'trim', which I'm guessing is leaning in a direction? My instructions are quite vague

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try the following to calibrate your quadcopter's gyros.
      1) Turn on the quadcopter and place it on a flat and level surface.
      2) Turn on and bind the transmitter. Center all trim tabs.
      3) Leaving the quadcopter undisturbed, move and hold both control sticks to their lower right corners. Hold them there until the quadcopter's lights blink. If they don't blink, then try lower left corners, lower outboard, or lower inboard until you notice the lights blink.
      4) Let go of the sticks and try flying.

    do you have any idea why the Syma wifi cameras have such poor video quality compared to other wifi quad cameras with the same or similar resolution? my X8W has such poor video quality and frame rate at Idlewild me standing two feet away. would love your input or thoughts

  • @sambowen
    @sambowen 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi @Quadcopter 101, I just recently got an X5C-1...yeah I know its... "old" lol...Only been flying it a little over a week, but a problem I had that I believe is fixed now, was my camera plug was loose, and randomly (usually when "landing" hard) I'm guessing the camera connector became loose, obviously resulting in corrupted videos. Just this morning I took the drone apart and found that there is a bracket that screws over the camera connector on the drone, and it wasn't screwed down all the way. I tested the plug outside of the drone and after tightening down the screw and the camera plug snapped in pretty snug, so hopefully this fixes my problem. I haven't tested it yet, getting my glue gun back from my sister in law tonight, then will replace the drop of glue over the screw (I'm guessing it's there in an attempt to keep the screw from coming out).
    At anyrate, I wonder if this could be your problem. Maybe the connector is coming loose just enough, to drop the video, but gets reconnected soon enough so the wifi doesn't know any better and is able to reconnect. Something to look into I guess if you can't figure something else out.

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Sam Bowen A very important thing to remember to do is turn off the camera following your flight before turning the quadcopter off. If you fail to do such, your video file will be corrupted. Visually verify that the recording session is completed in that the camera's LED light should change back to green from red.

    • @sambowen
      @sambowen 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, I do that but what has been happening is I start recording, everythings fine, but after a rough landing, or bumping into something I pick it up and camera light is green. On occasion I have noticed that the light wasn't on at all and after jiggling the cable it came on. I also tried to get into a habit of stopping the recording before landing, but I don't always remember or have a chance to do so, especially when in high rate mode ;)

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, it's not really necessary to "wear in" these smaller coreless motors. It's the bigger brushed motors (such as on bigger quads like the Tarantula, or Syma X8C) that benefit from wear in.

    +Quadcopter 101, I recently bought this quadcopter as my first large outdoor drone. However, after about a month and around 40 flights (I loved it) one of the motors have appeared to have burned out. I have seen a few video's about fixing this problem with replacements but I'm really not handy enough to do the soldering, wire connections, etc. Can you recommend any drones that I could buy for the future that that would be easy to fix (like slide in slide out)? I really appreciate your help! :)

    If you were to recommend a Quad to someone who is a intermediate line of sight flyer who wants to learn FPV, what Quad would you recommend? I what the altitude hold and 5.8 system. I have built several racing quads but I am afraid to fly FPV for fear of losing or destroying them. Been their, done that :( I just want to fly around and look at the deer and build my confidence up so I can move up to the ones I have built.
    Thanks so much for the vids, they are so interesting.

    must admit its a bit mind bogling what with all the brand names/letters. im struggling to see a difference between most of these symas what with the x5hw ..x5s the x5c then you get a - 1. from a qaud copter id like alltitude hold headless mode with fpv but not essential as heard bad things about wifi so may upgrade to 5.8g connection on camera what would you recommend out of the syma range

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always recommend the basic Syma X5C (or X5C-1, no difference these days) for new fliers, due to its excellent stability, durability, and ease of flying. And it even has a camera too. No FPV or headles mode, but a great learn to fly quadcopter. Use it to learn the basics of flight with. Let this cheap quadcopter take the inevitable crashes and bangs of a beginner flier. And if you break it, every part on it is cheap, widely available, and easily replaceable. Later as your flying skills improve and you're not crashing as much, then consider something better/more expensive. th-cam.com/video/y93vzA-KRlM/w-d-xo.html

      X5HC is EXACTLY the same, except that there is no FPV. The camera is the same but has the micro sd card to store video on board for download later. If you can find the HC get that one! Don't bother with the FPV and wifi, it doesn't work well.

    I have the syma x8g I was thinking of just changing out the boards to what that one uses, do you think it would work with the same tx other than I would have to manually center my sticks can you make a video testing that?

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +george aura Just tried it in my living room. No need to change out the boards. It binds with the X8C controller if you want increased range! And the phone attachment clip fits snugly to the top of the X8C antenna. But the X8C controller does not have an auto-center stick. You'll need to manually do that (not very hard to do).

      Luqmanulhakim Ali Ridza That looks like overcurrent protection. One of your propellers may be causing too much torque on a motor. The quadcopter will shutdown to prevent damage to the circuit board. Gently turn each propeller by hand, to feel for any unusual resistance. They should each spin freely, like a pinwheel. If any are hard to turn, investigate the cause and correct it. Usually it's caused by dirt in the gears which can be cleared with an old toothbrush or pin. But if they all spin freely, then the quadcopter itself may be defective. Next step would be to share your video link with your vendor's customer service to see if they can help.

    Tried to change the X5HC proprietary battery connector pigtail on the X5HC receiver board to use X5C batteries with mini Losi connector. When an X5C battery was plugged into it it immediately turned power on regardless of the TX being on! The wire gauge on the Losi pigtail is a bit thinner, is that an issue?
    Switching back to proprietary connector pigtail restored normal function.
    Any idea what could be wrong?

    • @Quadcopter101

      +Jim Fakatselis Are you absolutely certain that you matched the polarity of the wires?

    • @jfakatselis
      @jfakatselis 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Quadcopter 101 Yes absolutely positive. Repeated it twice, same result. I thought it may be the wire gauge being too thin.
      Uh oh. Just checked. The Losi pigtails I bought on Ebay are pre wired with the wrong polarity! That's the problem!!
      I have to remove the pins and swap them! Aha! Thanks for the encouragement.

      +Jim Fakatselis Actually one of the components started smoking but I immediately unplugged the battery and thank God nothing was damaged. It works fine. I had red to red and black to black on the board but the LOSI connector pins were actually reversed to the battery!, they have to be swapped.

      Well the X5HC has altitude hold and the X5SC does not. The X5HC does not suffer from the wind bug either. But the X6HC uses a proprietary battery, while the X5SC uses a very common and widely available battery.
