Pros
- Shiny candy apple red and chrome look. I like the look ;-)
- Good flight time, even when recording. I got close to 7 1/2 minutes of flight, while recording most of it to my SD card.
- Good smooth flier. Should be great for beginners.
- Auto takeoff and auto landing. Can safely auto land from high altitudes.
- Auto lands on low battery (does not drop from the sky).

- 720p HD camera that can record to a microSD card while WiFi FPV is operating

Cons
I had no problems with this quadcopter's flying abilities. Most of the cons that I noticed deal with the video.
- Proprietary battery :-(
- Jello, and plenty of it. Blade balancing needed to reduce such.
- microSD recorded video is somewhat washed out in bright sunlight.
- If you intend to fly FPV, you'll need to keep it very close. WiFi FPV is very short range at 20 to 40 meters.
- Recorded FPV video to your phone is very laggy and just about unusable. Would recommend using one of the many free screen recorder apps instead if you wish recorded phone video.

Your reviews are enjoyable and very informative, I've been flying the toy grade quads for some time, some with a camera and some without, and I have quite a few to practice with and I get better with flying 'em and learn something new each chance I get when the weather is nice, which isn't too often in this densely populated SF bay area. However, what separates your quad reviews from other TH-cam quad reviewers is that your reviews are not boring because of the topography where you do your reviews, and that's what makes it fun to watch Quadcopter 101.

Did you ever do a review of the X5 UC? I searched your channel but did not see one. I was wondering if the non-FPV unit had better flight time/range, and was the jello better or worse?
On other Syma controllers you can adjust the signal strength by pressing the forward trim button forward as you turn the transmitter on. Does this work with the UW transmitter if you press the left stick in as you turn the transmitter on?

the 2900 Pro is the way to go. my brother has one with the new GPS update if it goes down it will show you where it's at within 2 feet. it actually works not like what people say it does..... plus more power!

Yes the vendors send them as "courtesy" quadcopters, with the understanding that I will produce a TH-cam video review for each of them. But I don't keep them long (don't have the storage space), nor do I sell them (don't have the time or desire to deal with customer service issues). After their reviews are completed, they are donated to local schools and charities (Toys for Tots and school STEM clubs).
You might have one more question. Here's how I did it. I started my channel by producing tutorials and reviews of quadcopters that I had already purchased. I had a total of six small toy grade quadcopters, but I did many videos with those six. With practice, I started to become proficient at producing these videos. After about a year and 100 videos, I started to receive my first offers of free sample quadcopters for review purposes.
Good idea to donate these to "Toys for Tots", etc. Cheers.

that's awesome ,I don't know if I would want to do the videos, that's a lot of work Editting and making sure u got the shot all the time, I just love to fly these cool rc's in fact I just started about a month ago and I'm getting better at it every day! lol I still have issues but working on them. I have yet to buy any online I bought mine from Walmart sky viper stunt drone and I bought the bigger battery which extends fly time which is was awesome! but from watching ur videos I think I'll get some online. also a thousand thumbs up with what you do with them after the review too! for the kids is a touch of class 😁 looking forward to more awesome videos thank you.
It is quite a bit of work. I did two flights, as I wasn't satisfied with the first. And yes the editing is where the real work is. The above took about four hours to edit, mainly syncing all the picture in picture clips.
Quadcopter 101 editing is definitely not easy. I recently started a channel and now have more respect to yours and other big channels. maintaining a channel is not easy work.

What I have found is that when you use the camera it tends to disconnect. But when you use it with just the remote with no camera it works great!
It's because the cameras WiFi and the drones controller both operate on 2.4 Ghz frequency, and interfere with each other.

thanks for the review. the camera sucks with the washed out video. I wonder if there are better cameras from other quads that can be swapped out? you would think GPS could be added to a product like this because cell phone GPS technology is pretty compact.

Hey quad101, i have a question, i need a drone camera and im not sure what to get, what drone camera would you recommend, something light enough to be lifted by a syma x5? Fpv is preffered but not essensial, im looking for something with a wide field of view and the highest quality possible, something with a microphone is preffered but once again not essensial. nice review as usual but I'm looking for some advice this time. I'm looking to buy my first quadcopter around $200 to $300 with a decent amount of flight time about 20 - 30 minutes. I don't want to get a cheap $100 quadcopter with 5 to 10 minutes of flight time because I know I'm only going to want to replace it sooner then later so I am asking you to recommend me a good quadcopter with possible fpv(or not) upgrade and decent flight time.

I noticed if a Quad comes with a camera and if it takes a sd card it seems to burn battery faster and fly a little glitchy not this quad but all others i have flown but with just wifi seems not to bother battery to much have you noticed this my Friend Thanks for sharing

I just got the X5UW and one of the teeth broke on one of the small gears. It still seems to work but I'm worried that it's going to get worse. Do I have to replace the whole motor or can I just replace the gear? If so, how do I go about doing so. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
+adamdreke are you sure that the tooth is broke? Usually a small grain of sand can get stuck between the gear teeth. But it can be cleared by sliding a pin between the teeth.

I thought the jello on the X8C was bad, it's super bad on this bird.
It actually looks worse than the X5C. Of course, neither of them do 'pro' video (and the X8C can get good results with a credit card-mounted Runcam), but I practiced taking video with the X5C, and it was much nicer looking.
I just took a X8C I got recently out for a flight this evening and I was very happy to find that there's no jello on the stock camera. I only paid around $48 for the quad so it's an all around win win for me.

HELP! I just got my X5UW and after 2 days one motor reversed direction and is now pushing down. If I change the motor will that fix it or is it in the board? Has anyone else had this issue?
It's probably not the motor, but more likely that you changed its propeller, and were unaware that there are two different shaped propellers for clockwise and counterclockwise turning motors. Remove the propeller from the motor that is blowing the wrong direction. Take a close look at its shape, and replace with one of the other propellers with a different shape.

I turn my on and it flys off to the left. I can not get it to hover.
Did it ever fly properly? Or if it did fly properly, did the problem start after changing a propeller? The reason I ask is that most new fliers are unaware that there are two different shapes of propellers (Clockwise and Counter-Clockwise) that must be installed on corresponding two CW and two CCW motors. If installed on a wrong motor, the quadcopter will not take off, but will slide along the ground, flip, or just spin its props without taking off. Take a close look at the following picture. Jello is horrible, considering the older X5C's have basically no jello, at least mine doesn't.
OMG! Terrible jello. Even looks like you were flying with half a prop to be that bad. Doubt that can be 'balanced' out with those propellers. The RC Saylors TH-cam channel has a good review without jello on the recorded video so yours may need to be sent back for exchange. They liked it a lot BTW.

Thanks for the review. Unfortunately, I could NEVER recommend this quad to anyone .. beginner or not. The camera video off the micro SD card is unusable due to Jello and frame drops (most noticeable when you do a panorama). The video on the wi-fi phone app freezes and stops. Proprietary battery? Really Syma? As they say in NJ, "Forget about it". Not much of a LVC warning .. just falls out of the sky and you hope you can stop the motors before you burn them up. (a friend of mine bought the X5HC on my recommendation, and because it doesn't have a way to kill the motors IMMEDIATELY, he's already burned up 3 motors). Yeah, the "candy apple red" finish is nice, but you can get that with any quad and a 99 cent can of "Spra Pla" (might be dating myself with that price .. probably costs $9.99 these days). In short, for me, not much to see here folks ... keep moving along. I doubt Syma will sell 500 of these units, but I DO appreciate you continuing to show us what's *NEW* out there. Cheers.
