      Not really - few of the recent Prime Ministers have been particularly wealthy. Especially not compared with, say, American Presidents. Cameron is the one exception in the last 50 years or so, and he was nowhere near as wealthy as Sunak. The rest came from pretty normal middle class backgrounds (or in the case of Major and Truss - and vaguely Blair - working class ones).

    A correction. Rishi Sunak is not a Vegetarian. He does not drink and does not eat Beef. But he does eat all other forms of meat like Chicken, Pork or Fish.
    This is the tradition followed by the people of his caste (or the caste of his grandparents/parents to be specific as Sunak married outside his caste thus traditionally becoming a casteless person), the Khatris of Punjab.

    Good research, Matt, and almost entirely accurate. One minor point: Hindus have no religious reason not to drink alcohol (unlike Muslims). The PM's reason for not drinking is entirely physiological - makes him ill. His wife, also Hindu, of course, does drink.
    Funnily enough, we were invited to a Diwali celebration at a newly arrived neighbour's recently and she (Hindu) loves red wine. He (English) prefers white but they both drink.

    His wife has "non-domicile" status which has allowed her to avoid paying around £20m in tax. To qualify you're supposed to be permanently residing outside the UK, except she lives with him at 10 Downing Street no less. Meanwhile up until last year he had a US green card which meant he had to file a US tax return. Seeing as the US taxes all citizens, even those abroad, and he difinitely earns more than the ~$120,000 non-US residents can write off their taxes, it's quite possible the UK Prime Minister and his familty have paid more tax to the IRS than they have to HMRC.

      Not true. Someone born in the UK who buys a house abroad qualifies as their primary residence is no longer in the UK. That is what qualifies you. Your example, Bernie Ecclestone, demonstrates this as he was born in England.
      Sunak's wife is following the letter of the law. The problem is the law exists only to allow the elite to legally dodge taxes. Clearly someone who lives year round in England does not permenantly reside elsewhere, except by the letter of the law they can and she does. Interesting to read the comment that Robert Jenkinson Lord Liverpool and Prime Minister was of Indian descent on his mother's side. Rishi Sunak is the youngest PM for 200 years (although not the youngest ever), since, yes you have guessed it, Robert Jenkinson, Lord Liverpool. And the fact that the fathers of Obama (1st President of colour in USA) and Sunak were both born in Kenya. History does reveal some strange coincidences.

    You said he's "the 1st PM to be younger than, well, me"
    But this is not true, he IS the youngest PM in 200 years at age 42 (since Lord Liverpool who was also 42 when he became PM), though it is worth noting when Cameron became PM at 43 he was also the youngest in 200 years, however he isn't close to the youngest ever PM which would be Pitt The Younger, who was only 24 years old when he became PM in 1783 (and he ruled for 18 years!)

    Well done for that last comment. Clearly he's British. Something that I find really endlessly thought provoking is how we muddle up all things like nationality, culture, ethnicity, race, heritage, language etc because we use the same words for many of these things. When I heard that some people in India were saying now one of them rules over the British, I just thought that Rishi Sunak is only Indian in heritage/race/ethnicity. Neither of which make a person who they grow to be. When I think of an individuals culture it's more about where they grew up than where their ancestors are from. The fact neither of his parents are born in India too. He's much more British than he is Indian. IMO.

    • @PatSen
      @PatSen ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He is very Indian. Surprisingly so. Looking at the data one would assume that he has but a tenuous link to India. However, it seems that the Sunaks, like most Indians immigrants of 1970s and before, stuck assiduously to their culture in the way they live their lives.
      Indic folks do that sometimes to their detriment - because they carry with them a freeze-frame image of the existing culture and do not e solve like the people do in India. U.K. is thus filled with exceedingly insular Indic communities. It’s most prevalent in Asian Muslims. But it can be seen in Sikh, Hindu and Jain communities in Britain (and Aus, NZ and Can).

      @@hemantgokhale4164 The split of the Anglican church from the Church of Rome cannot be compared to a caste system, though in English law for many years Catholics could not hold office of state, and to some extent, wealth. This was more a deliberate political choice that started to fall apart just before Queen Victoria's reign. Religious wise MOST Anglican Priests / Vicars dont have great differences with current Vatican II onwards expressions of belief- most divergence would be on the status of Mary as mother of Christ and prayers to saints, and there is the acceptance of Married persons to serve in the Anglican Church, something which is not accepted in Catholic thought, but I think that will change in the next 50 years.
