    I was able to achieve 1696 / 1100 on my Vega FE. I noticed that other programs such as Afterburner would interfere with Wattman, but once those were disabled I didn't have any issues. As with the Fury X, overclocking the HBM seemed to increase performance a decent amount.

      Just a reality check: It is not accurate to say "Vega: FE outperforms Titan Xp" as a blanket statement. It outperformed, of our tests, in Creo, Catia, and medical. It was beaten by Titan Xp in gaming, power consumption, Blender rendering, 3DS Max, and Maya.

    So a slightly "cut down" RX version of this card (Same shader count, less HBM etc) would perform basically the same especially if they increase the clock speeds at all. Seeing as how this performed slightly below the GTX 1080 and the fact that AMD always prices their consumer cards aggressively i'd say we have something to look forward to with RX Vega. AMD not competing with Nvidia on the highest of high end doesn't mean they've failed, It just means your only option there is Nvidia which is fine considering the majority of gamers buy mid-range cards anyway.
    Also if they do make an actual cut-down version with less shaders (Like with the 7950/7970, R9 290/290X, 480 vs 470 etc) we could end up with a card outperforming a GTX 1070 at a lower price or equal price. This is just my assessment of info here i'm not making any assumptions but i am interested to see how it plays out. I'm currently rocking a GTX 970 with a Freesync monitor so upgrading to an AMD card that competes with a GTX 1070 for less money would be nice and seems plausible at this point.

    • @DimiS1978
      @DimiS1978 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Joe Dirt Lower price? Vega has a huge die, slow vram that can't clock very high at all and on top of that is incredibly expensive to make ... this has fail written all over it and by the time the RX Vega comes out Volta will crush it.

  • @jpthomason

    My use of yt subs as a gamer then builder started with Linus, then migrated to Jay, and has now ended here. This has become my go to sub for info and reviews. I dig Jay and Linus for helping me get here. Apparently now I'm less a chooser of a sub as entertainment (Linus), or a sub as hard info and entertainment (Jay), and now just needing a sub for the hard and quick info that also teaches me, which is this sub. While I'll always revisit Jay and Linus, as a 48 year old gamer and builder, this is now my home. I want the info detailed, and all viewpoints, and direct and to the point, and I want to learn more than I know. J and L (and Tek Syndicate somewhat) helped to educate me to the point that brought me here.

    I still think RX Vega will surprise us. This card was usually a few percent ahead of the Fury X throughout the game benchmarks, but it has the same number of cores, and a ~60% higher clockspeed. There is no way that an extra 600 MHz over a Fury X would only amount to like 10% higher performance. And that's if Vega was an identical architecture to Fiji. Which it isn't. There's just no way Vega could actually be that slow in games, but I'm guessing that the RX variant with regular RX drivers is going to be a much more compelling card. I don't want to speculate how fast it will be, but it should be faster than this. I hope. But if it isn't, AMD can still stick Nvidia with the price and have a compelling card.

    Why can't anyone just live in reality? Vega doesn't "suck" and it doesn't "blow Nvidia out of the water." AMD is doing what they ALWAYS do, which is offer similar performance, at a reasonable price. That's all. Not sure how people haven't caught on by now. They are never blowing Intel or Nvidia away, they are always nipping at their heels at a better price. Which HAS it's place in the market.

      gamer taboo a much cheaper certified Quadro p4000 is better than this piece of garbage. this is not a real workstation card. this is a slightly cheaper alternative for hobby or small indie dev people than the Titan XP that performs worse in the tasks that it should have been doing. don't you get it?

    • @beanshady
      @beanshady 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      gamer taboo Absolutely agree taboo but why try to explain logic to youtubers.. we really don't know where the "RX" vega will end up until it's actually available and at what specific price. Personally I'm okay with a 1080 competitor if the price is right. This being said, I'm actually still good with my RX480 at the moment though and will not be in the market for a new gpu until later in 2018. By that time RX vega should be well out with driver updates and I'll consider it along with Nvidia's offerings at that time. For those in the market right now, I feel for them as gpu prices and availability are terrible due to this cryptomining situation.

    • @cdurkinz
      @cdurkinz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know it competes with a Titan XP on the workstation side, and WAY underperforms on the gaming side, so THIS specific card, the FE, really doesn't have a place really anywhere in my opinion. They say it's for workstation with some gaming, but it doesn't do all that great on the gaming side just beating out a 1070 most of the time. It scored quite well in a few things but I'm not sure how many people will blow a grand just for those programs. I'm sure there will be some. My main point was that, like they say in the video, and like we saw in a really early sneak peek (I wanna say CES back in January maybe? can't remember), when RX Vega releases I think it will directly compete with a GTX 1080. Around the same performance for slightly cheaper, maybe? THAT has it's place in the market. Though Hydrochloric Acid made a good point, makes you wonder what the price will be for RX Vega.... They might only have one stack of HBM2 at 8GB. Though they did HBM in the Fury/x and kept the price reasonable at a time when nobody did HBM.... Who knows I suppose. But either way, even though this specific card doesn't make a ton of sense, I believe RX Vega will fit in. Maybe they released this to sort of temper expectations or something.

  • @beanshady
    @beanshady 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you so much for a thorough review of Vega FE air and for your conclusion statement that we need to stay patient and wait for the RX Vega before determining where it ultimately places in the gaming card market. Well done video and analysis as always!

    I'm not panicking... I'm mortified! It's looking like RX Vega will perform on par with a 1070, maybe coming close to the 1080 in AMD favorable scenario (like Vulcan games), yet it looks like it's going to be a 250-300W card. So, I'm not panicking, I'm just going to amazon to order a 1080Ti, all the while wishing AMD had delivered the goods the same way they did on the CPU side.

    RX Vega won't be able to compete with 1080ti confirmed by steve, from written review conclusion:
    "Keep expectations checked for RX Vega, as it will be at least in the orbit of these results, but there's not yet reason to try and pretend we can guess at its performance, either. There will likely be improvement -- but don't expect 30-40%. Keep it realistic."

    • @GamersNexus
      @GamersNexus  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's not "confirmed" -- we haven't tested it. The point is not to get hopes too high. If it can do that much, great. Even better. But going into a GPU launch with such high expectations is only going to drive unrealistic expectations even higher.

    Great Review (and that's coming from an AMD fanboy)! You've learned a lot from your Ryzen review backlash :) Thanks for taking the time to actually understand the target market and intent for the card and using an *appropriate* benchmark suite (ex. maya, blender, etc.) before just jumping to the typical game bench runs. I still maintain this card is ideal for the 3D developers due to the compute power and scalability across the entire workflow, from creation to testing (IE Vega FE has both Pro and game drivers, I've only seen game drivers for Titan). Anyway, keep up the measured and objective reviews!

    A lot of people are underestimating the difference drivers can make. It is true that drivers can only make 10 to 20 percent of difference most of the time but that is because gaming cards are ready for games right out of the box. This is a brand new architecture using an old driver, therefore games cant take advantage of all the new features. I expect the final gaming
    performance to be at least 2X as powerful than the R9 Fury X since its using a much more advanced architecture and is a jump from 14nm to FinFet.

    Best coverage and contextualization I've seen so far. fingers crossed RX SKUs offer improvements (not expecting much though tbh).
    Enigma is fitting, schedule wise they usually don't prioritize niche markets before core consumers, especially bizarre when compared to the midrange exclusive decision "putting gamers first" last year.
    I can see the target audience clearly as I've been in the midst of a few circumstances it'll benefit _(game art/animation in academia in particular, along side smaller boutique studios/trend towards "AAA indie" developers(aka using UE4?) I've even set up a couple consumer part render rigs in coordination with receptive faculty on campus, that vastly out performed the Quadros in the other workstations in most every use case, I think most sales of workstation cards are to academic institutions, and seems like a bit of a racket tbh, most people outside of the likes of Pixar, GM or academia go with mainstream cards because its just bad value proposition, so doubt they'd cannibalize their workstation market. And holy shit are quadros for game development excruciatingly poor especially the SKUs on campus are generally the lowest tier units)_
    The PRO duo attempted to appeal to the same audience but I was more cynical about it as a legit developer/workstation oriented product. Because sure it helps via bruteforce while working in engine on pre-optimized assets but nothing much more, directly analogous to the Titan SKUs I suppose, but throw in flakier support in gaming due to its dual card nature. However the PRO driver mode and impressive productivity performance of FE makes it a different picture entirely imo. I'd genuinely recommend it to peers. although in game dev it would have been *far* more compelling if it consistently hit 1080 performance.
    On another note really curious how the whole tile based rasterizer being seemingly absent on the FE pans out, whether it is absent or it's just a flawed methodology to determinate it's presence. If it's absent there's a potentially decent performance delta just there?
    Also any remote chance to test if HBM is just inherently better suited for error free use-cases? bet there would be some memory thrashing and analysis tools and methodologies that could determine that? starting to genuinely wonder if it's just inherently less volatile when it comes to arbitrary or erroneous bit flipping or whatnot

    Phenomenal and realistic review, Steve. I am curious to see the pricing on the RX Vega, although I am not optimistic due to HBM not being cheap. If they have a card in between the performance of a 1070 and 1080 for 399, I see that model selling like hot cakes. But you don't start a price war with nvidia who is in a position to drop the 1070 to 350 or even maybe 300 and the 1080 to 450 or 400$.

  • @AS-gb5wz
    @AS-gb5wz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    RX Vega will be DOA since die size is MASSIVE, you yourself measure it at ~520mm^2, and the highest end rx vega will use the same silicon as the vega fe, so if it only perform between gtx 1070 and 1080 (the crappy founders edition at that), it will be hard to be priced competitively since nvidia can easily counter with price cut with their considerably smaller die and cheaper gddr5/x.

    • @mrlauris1000

I was looking to buy a hybrid frim EVGA or a Sea Hawk but the hybrid is at $580 now so I might wait for the official RX Vega release or just buy the sea hawk. I only game at 1080p 144hz so a 1080 will be more than enough regardless of Volta performance

In all seriousness based on price and function, it's a competitor to the Titan X and if that's the case it's a professional card that can game. Just like the Titan X, although it seems this card can't game as well as the Titan X.

    not looking good, because max what Vega can do is compete with gtx 1080 a card that soon will be 1.5 years old, that would be fine if price would be sub 400$, but that is not realistic - judging by nvidias titan vs ti price history - ti never was -50% titans price... more like -30%... that will give us amd Vega gtx 1080 performance for gtx 1080 ti price 1.5 years after gtx 1080. and now this minig craze (topugh prices are crushing - still profitable) all rx 570 and 580's are sold out for 500$+, this means any Vega that is like +30% of rx 580 performance will be out of stock even at 800$.

    "This is not a gaming card", "This is not a pro card" are only excuses from amd marketing and from amd bloodknights. Amd made a different category so you cant really compare this card to anything, so thats a perfect excuse. A regular Quadro can do the same gaming performance like its geforce counterpart, only the price is different because certifications.The RX Vega wont be any faster. After relase and 3-6 more month beta testing by the consumer for amd maybe it will reach the GTX 1080 performance level with 300W power consumption. Of course you can still "wait and see" as you do always with amd, but its pointless. Wait for Volta maybe.

      Sure. But this card eats up power, has gaming performance of a 1080, renders worse than a Titan XP while being hotter - all whilst costing $1000. It's a 10-15% improvement over the previous flagship of AMD. Funny how you people are repeatedly saying the same things - "Have you heard of the Titan XP???" "Have you heard of the Quadro???" Sure. But this guy performs worse than both and has a price point that doesn't justify professionals to flock to.

    Very nice unbiased review. But I have to say something about the Blender benchmark (Blender user here): the Cycles OpenCL kernel is completely broken. That's why it was crashing and stuff. But the main point is that the performance is nowhere near what the CUDA Cycles is able to get (and, BTW, the OpenCL kernel doesn't even render volumes at the moment, and it misses other features, so the comparison isn't fair). Just try to render the same scene with both CUDA and both OpenCL on the same Nvidia card and you'll get my point :)
    I'm not saying that the review is broken - no way. The review is great. It's just a "don't care about the Blender benchmark"

    From what AMD has been saying the gaming drivers (DX etc) are not optimized for the architecture and thus I think they mean they are not making use of the packed math.
    Older AMD gaming cards have never had the ability to use packed math so the drivers will not have been written with that in mind.
    For example, if you have 2 image buffers that need to be combined (added together in this example) each image buffer is a vector of 8b R G B A components. [r1, g1, b1, a1, r2, b2, g2, a2.....]
    Consider these buffers to be 256 (64 RGBa pixels) and you have a GPU with 64 parallel processing cores. If you do not use packed math you will need 4 full clock cycles to add these 2 buffers together. if you are using packed math you only need 1 clock cycle.
    Not all data in games can be represented in as few as 8bits but a large amount of the work of a GPU involves the combination of image buffers after they have been projected into the plane that makes up the user's screen. Also, even the computation of this projection will benefit a lot from using packed math operations.
    So if it is true that AMD has not yet re-written the driver stack to use packed math fully then i would expect a large boost in performance when they do. @GamersNexus are you able to ask AMD if they current DX drivers are using any of the packed math or if they are currently just re-using the older Fiji drivers?

    Steve you're good man. As much as I love AMD and what they do I came into this hoping for something on par with the 1070. I think this will be a lot like Ryzen where it doesn't outperform but it may well undercut NVIDIA like they did to Intel in the price/performance section. Hopefully it is the case so we see some price drops now or when Volta is released.

    So Thermaltake managed to make a double sided tempered glass case that seems to have adequate cooling and they are selling it for $70. I'd love to see a review about that!

    The only One TH-cam Channel who actually bought the AMD Frontier to make a review . ALL the other channels don't give a shit if their audience want a review , they're not going to pay no one card , they want only to make videos on stuff they got for free!!!

    Steve big fan in here, if possible when vega gaming launches do a comparasion between FE and gaming version in games and also professional workloads to see the loss and gains in both sides.
