What a lovely place and beautiful people. The voices you can hear outside of the prayer times are of people learning the Qur'an. This is pengajian. When you get someone with a melodic voice, it really is beautiful. Thanks for posting one of my favourite places to visit.

yeah because he's a Bule (white guy). don't think that that's how they behave in their daily lives. in fact Sumatra is well known to be dangerous. Indonesians love to act nice and friendly for youtube/tiktok, but many of them are rotten. And you haven't got a clue how badly they treat and view women. I say this as an indonesian who moved abroad

Thank you for the initial insight into Indonesia.
Like your other viewers, I'm looking forward to your trip. The friendly cat (tail up) was clearly a great purr-sonality, having much to say. Banda Aceh should be amazing!

Jason, we have communicated before since I first saw your videos in the Sahara Desert in Tunisia where I visited as a traveller in 1973. Two years later after having hitch hiked all over Europe and as a Dutch Australian I left Holland in January 1975 and spent a year travelling overland along the hippie trail back to Australia. Along the way I was advised to go to Lake Toba to hang out on the island and rest and recuperate before travelling the full length of Sumatra and Java etc but having run out of money I never achieved this dream. And now being aware of geology and the history of the supervolcano eruption of Lake Toba 74,000 years ago you have reinspired me to go there, now as a 72 year old, following your videos. I would suggest that you find out more of this spectacular eruption for you to appreciate even more your proposed visit to Lake Toba and Samosir Island and to stay in one of the long houses there. Btw I am also inspired to travel Japan and to follow your videos especially Kyoto and the temples and forests during the autumn leaves colour season next year. Your videos are absolutely wonderful. I watch them all. Good luck with your future travels.

    • @JasonBillamTravel
      @JasonBillamTravel  ปีที่แล้ว +4

I’ve always enjoyed reading your detailed comments over the years. It’s a shame you couldn’t fit in Sumatra and Java but there’s still time. Yes, the history of the eruption is worth investigating and telling - something I will aim to do.
Japan (especially Kyoto) is beautiful, and I’m sure you’ll have a memorable time there.

Medan is a very interesting city, we loved it when we visited. Please visit Lake Toba, Bukittinggi (Fort DeKock, Hatta Musuem birthplace of the Vice President of Indonesian). We went white water rafting in Pagaralam, also there is trekking at Pagaralam neat Mount Dempo, Palembang was a nice city and don't forget Bandar Lampung. Getting to Pagaralam was a bit difficult because its not a big city and not too many buses used to go there. If you can't make it to the south, try to visit Bukittinggi, Padang and the surrounding areas of Lake Toba. There is a waterfall worth visiting although getting around, you will probably need to hire a motorbike. Roads were a bit rough as well. Anyway, loved your video as always. Love & respect from Bangladesh.

Wow, if you are a food lover to Indonesia the right choice because Indonesia has more than 5000 traditional foods and with an area of about 1.9 million km, 700 more languages and thousands more cultures, and with thousands of megalithic places before Christ, I hope you not only go to Sumatra but explore other islands also not only to Bali, there are so many incredible natural landscapes in Indonesia even snowy places. And I would like to give some references to TH-cam channels of foreigners living in Indonesia who might be able to help your trip (Kristian Hansen, Sam Indowild, the Lost Boys, Bule Bolang, Gypsy in Sneakers, Laurence Benson, Buaya barat, scoopy gang, Bags Packed Family) actually still quite a lot but this in my opinion is enough and one of them is from England too. Have fun in Indonesia..

So nice to see you in Medan a city I have lived in pre tsunami. The Tip Top was my fave resto with it's old charm as you mentioned. There used to be a night market on that street too. I lived in Banda Aceh the Grand Mosque is better there, so you will enjoy it. Make sure you go the beach area of Lhok Nga and visit Joels Bungalows on a fantastic beach. Joel used to live in Italy and speaks perfect English. Lake Toba is cool and so is Bukit Lawang for the orangutangs. If you want to go somewhere remote try Simeulue Island (where I built the first beach resort), Banyak Islands, Nias and the Mentawai Islands. Most tourists are surfers as Sumatra has the best surfing spots in the world. Salamat Jalan

Medan is my hometown, thank you for having such a generous opinion about it. But Medan is no longer a safe city now, so be careful with your belongings.
Indonesian food is very delicious, its natural views are breathtaking, its people welcoming, but it is because there were not many Western Country foreigners to ever visit this place.
Originally, Indonesia is a warm and friendly country, but it bears many signs of radicalism nowadays, especially regarding religious sentiment, which is a reason I would kindly ask you to consider before visiting this kind of country in the future. I honestly was apprehensive about your safety.
You may want to experience some thrilling adventure, but there are many more safer places around the world to visit.
Hope you have a safe and pleasant trip wherever you are going. 🙂

Minute 11:18 Just missed a rather large (Buddhist?) temple there. Curious what it is. Also, I heard there is a catholic church in Medan with unique & stunning architecture, that looks like a combination of a church, a temple & a mosque.

At the end you described Aceh as a place where Shariah Law still exists. I'm not sure if you are aware of this or not, but Aceh has only had Shariah Law for about 20 years. The way that you phrased it sounds a little strange because nowhere else in the country had it in the past.

PLEASE DON'T SKIP LAKE TOBA while you're in North Sumatera. You'll be amazed! North Sumatera, Aceh, and West Sumatera are rich in nature and culture. They're heavens of Sumatera. So, if you have time, please continue your journey to the West Sumatera.
Anyway, despite the grand mosque you saw and the Moslem girls you met, North Sumatera is actually home to many Christians. Most Bataknese are Christians, but yes there is Moslem Bataknese and Karo. North Sumatera is one of few provinces in Indonesia where pork are widely spread and served.

lots of Indian influence can be found in Indonesia even today. The name Indonesia means "Indian islands". picture of Lord Ganesha, one of the most popular deity in India was inscribed on the 20,000 rupiah note of Indonesia. Indian currency also called Rupiah in Hindi. Indonesian Airlines is called Garuda which is an Indian deity. lots of ancient Hindu and Buddhist temples getting unearthed in Indonesia. Bali is an Indian name. Bali has 87% Hindu population. In past whole Indonesia was Hindu but now Hindus are left in Bali only.
