Love those old thumpers. Nice job on the diagnosis and fix, your perseverance paid off! When I buy something that's not running I always ask if I can check spark and compression quickly. Like you, I hate electrical issues. This guy probably wouldn't have let you because his BS story would have been exposed.
None the less, nice job on the fix and thanks for sharing!

Please Install a double setup or if possible convert it to a single carb setup bur Use the KEIHIN FCR COPIES FROM CHINA. 136usd each carb. Runs like hell!!

Great bikes, I have an 83. I also had to replace the stator. It seems like a common problem with them. Unfortunately, when it went out, it left me stranded about thirty miles in the backcountry. My truck could only get about two miles from it, where it was down in a rugged canyon. I had to dismantle the bike to carry it out in pieces. It took two and a half days. After studying the schematic, I probably could have switched the ac headlight power supply wire, with the cdi power supply from the stator. I believe there is some difference in voltage, but it probably would have gotten me out. No problems since I really like the bike and have no plans of getting rid of it. Thanks for sharing.

a lipo battery spliced into the coil would have got you out, probs burned the coil out but cheap enough to replace, I bet you hated that bike when it chucked it in that canyon but now you love it,

@sicks6six would you recommend me replacing the CDI? I just got a 87 and I don't wanna be stranded lol.

Probably should've done one on that. Bought for $450, carb clean and a spit shine and off it goes. It flies too!!

Carbs are the way they are supposed to be. Its not the carbs , its an electrical problem. Pulce generator or stator.
