BRIAN BLESSED!!!! - Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast

  • What Was The Question?
It’s finally come to pass. The podcasts can end now, because the whole point of starting them up has been achieved. Richard’s guest is a man who has played all theatrical parts, but most notably the part of Brian Blessed.
I couldn’t even begin to describe what happened on this extraordinary night, except to say it is was a bona fide happening. Try and predict how many words Richard will say in this. It’s a free form and extraordinary, yet sometimes beautiful and inspiring, journey through the career, philosophy and madness of a man who might be the greatest living Englishmen. How much of it is true? I can’t tell you. But at least some of it. Includes sticking it to Picasso, toileting on a mountain, biting umbilical cords, working with the young Peter O’Toole and Patrick Stewart, never dying and probably some other stuff. I can’t tell you. I had a little nap through most of it. Worth watching the video version to see my torture on what was one of the best experiences of my life. This podcast is absolutely unbeatable.

Been waiting for this for years, really enjoyed Brian Blessed’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast (bblstp). What was weird was, at the start, that Richard Herring bloke came up from the audience and said some stuff, but when Brian came on, instead of going back to his seat in the audience, Richard just sat in the middle of the stage during the entire show! Unbelievable! Being the true professional that Brian is, he just ignored it and carried on with the show to end, amazing, nothing phases him.

Saw Brian Blessed on tour at The Orchard Theatre recently and it was one of the best nights of my life. Got to meet him afterwards and he was influential when I told him I’m going to Drama school this September.
At one point when he was talking on the stage a couple of people were nipping out to go to the toilet and he shouted ‘WHERE THE FUCK ARE YOU GOING!?’ 😂😂

Outrageous tales, base and disgusting impulses, gut-wrenching laughter. It was especially amazing seeing and feeling Rich's torture and pleasurable exhilaration. The amazing beauty of a human: a man, a performer, a story-teller, an eccentric/mad-man losing the threads of his own stories at times, an adventurer and explorer, and an inspiration.

      @joebananas37 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Ultimately, I _think_ Richard was as well.

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@MontyCantsin5 The Cherry on the cake. He's such a fucking purist, there's a whole generation at least, who don't know him from a hole in the ground. That just isn't right. A great man once wrote
      "Extraordinary fellow, like Mr Punchinello
He's the kind of geezer who must never be abused
When you're in town and Ebeneezer is around
You can sense a presence in the sound of the crowd"
and I think that could have easily been written about the great Rabbi Burns himself.
Gallows humour? More like Guilletine humour. Chop, chop, chop, no head too sacred, he put the "rave" into "depraved" he didn't lower the bar, he's buried it so deep, Tony Robinson and Time Team couldn't find it. To call him "inappropriate" does him a diservice, because it suggests circumstances where he IS appropriate. Maybe if he reigned in his devoted taskforce of litigation lawyers from getting every bit of footage of him on the internet pulled, and instead, accepted Richard's invite, he could demonstrate what a real fucking comedy monster does. It's savage, it's brutal, and it's not pretty.
But comedy's purpose isn't just to make us laugh. It's supposed to make us squirm, it's supposed to make us feel uncomfortable, it's supposed to address subjects so taboo, that nobody wants to look at them. Comedy has a cultural function, in that its the first way we can begin to address the horror of something like a War. WWII ended what, 70 years ago, and only recently Hitler's comedic value been embraced by mainstream comics. But Sadovitz would have been right there with the troops when those camps were liberated cracking on about how big Hitler's gas bill must have been.
He would not have turned away. He would have witnessed the horror and processed it, then forced his audience to start laughing about it. Which is pretty much what he does. He's not there to entertain his audience, his audience is there for him to abuse, offend, outrage, and appall, all at such a breakneck speed, by the time you've realised what he just said, he's off on some vitriolic rant about something else. "Omg, did he really just. . . . . . "
He was working on his 9/11 material before the second plane hit. He outed Rochdale's child abusing councils way back in 1988 when Cyril Smith was running things. He suggested that the best way to get to the bottom of it, was to get Jimmy Savile on the case, because "He's a fucking paedophile, who better to head up the investigation?" Which, in hindsight was pretty much what happened.

I’m so glad I wasn’t there. I’m pretty sure I would have soiled myself 😂

Great to have a video record of Brian doing his "act" for an extended period. It's fun watching him pick which story to tell.

Not yet watched the video yet but already liked it as it has `Teh Blessed`, a true living legend - missed out on getting tickets for this and utterly gutted I could not see it live :(
Edit: Seen it now and that has got to be one of the best episodes - sheer brilliance :)

Richard, I have a great idea for an emergency question: How long do you think you could last locked in a room with Brian Blessed?

Beardyman just did a jam of some of Brian's best bits from this - I had to come hear the whole thing!!
