Richard Herring's Leicester Square Theatre Podcast - with Steve Coogan

  • Celebrity Ghost Train.
Rich is still alive and kicking (and dancing) only a day after completing a Half Marathon in record breaking time (though to be fair he had a ringer to do it for him) and he's disappointed in the movie "The Wolf of Wall Street" for all kinds of reasons.
But he has a very special guest to help him celebrate his half century of RHLSTPs, it's the go-to guy if you want someone to play a small toy figure, Steve Coogan. A-ha! (Steve loves it when people do that). They chat about getting laughs at the Leveson Enquiry, why so many people that Steve has done impressions of have ended up in gaol, Stewart Lee's Partridge-inspiring encounter with a superfan and why Around the World in 80 Days really needed more martial arts in it.
And finally we're going to find out who created Alan Partridge. Will Steve pay Richard the £250,000 he demands in royalties? No he won't.

Just started watching 'The Reckoning' on iplayer and Steve's performance is incredible. I also like how they repeatedly switch between modern times and flashbacks to the past. (now, then, now, then)

I'm really enjoying watching some of these older RHLSTPs, despite having already listened to the audio versions back when they came out. You get a different take on them when you can see the guests and Richard. You can see a certain comedic affection between the two in this one, which is really nice.

It's a bit of a drag being of a similar age as these guys but being from the US so missing so much shared history before the advent of the WWW. Listening to these comrades (same with Rob Brydon on RHLSTP) chat about the early days of stand-up in Britain I regret not going to GB after college in the 80s. Thatcher not withstanding.

Just re-watched this and i think it's one of my fave interviews you've done Rich ( Greg Davies still number 1 ). Not only is Steve really fucking funny but he answers pretty much every question honestly and direct and it's never awkward, he just comes across as a guy who's genuinely like-able and admits his flaws and doesn't mine making light of the situation or himself.

It's just struck me that Coogan at this point looks and sounds like Peter Cook would if he were a mere human as opposed to a fully-realized god*. So this was extremely enjoyable, especially since Richard seems totally at ease with him and converses like they are old friends, as opposed to some of the more out-there guests like Stewart Lee...
*(And if he were alive, as I suppose I must add.)
