Hello ! I’ve been watching you for two years now with subtitles, I’m from Moscow. I love Roscoe just like you. I see how your channel is developing, good luck and prosperity to you.😉😃
Went into Trek for a Slash 7 and bought the Roscoe 8 instead. The staffer said unless you are a TH-camr jumping off of mountain cliffs you don't need a full suspension bike. Glad I didn't buy into the hype. Maybe someday if I start planning vacations around black diamond mountain runs I will go full sus, but the Roscoe 8 is amazing for the trails in central Texas. Saved a ton of money as well.
Hopefully someone getting into sport will see this and snag that deal. I would've loved that option back in 2022, but I paid peak dollar for my Roscoe 7 then. While I don't want to see companies struggle or closing the door, I'm happy to see prices coming back down to reasonable levels again.
I got this bike last year in December i was working at a bike shop and got it for exactly 1k built it up and everything couldn't be happier with my purchase. Its definitely made riding gnarly trails even more fun.
I recently looked into buying a more aggressive hardtail and considered the roscoe 8 for the longest time. Just the overall specs you get for your money is just incredible. But in the end I decided on purchasing a Cube Reaction TM Pro instead because of it's better fitting geometry. Mostly considered the Trek because of your vids btw. Thx for the effort put in!
Just get out there and have fun! I have noticed higher quality bikes do matter. My first two bikes were Walmart and a used bike and didn’t last a few rides! I have a Marlin 6 I upgraded quite a bit and it’s amazing what I put that bike through. Im saving for a trek slash now going to compare the real difference between a hard tail and full suspension.
I just wanted to let you know I really love your videos. You are so "real." AND, I'm originally from Denver and can tell from your videos you hang around 8th and Ash. Believe it or not...my dad still lives in his little home just a couple miles east of there.
I own this bike its my HT trail ripper. I am anal about bikes I have been in the industry since the late 90s. I have owned sworks bikes, raced at the XC1 level, worked at a shop for 5 years , not flexing just want you to know I have been around before I say something. The Trek roscoe 8 is unbeatable for the money. I bought it with the intention of upgrading and I can't bring myself to spend a dollar on it. The brakes are great, tires are good and roll good for 2.6s, sram eagle drive train, as Matt said the wheels feel way out of the price range of this bike, the rock shox 35 actually has a very good feel and has great progression for the price, and the frame is far better than the FUSE which I owned and sold after getting the Roscoe 8. Buy this for $1600 get pedals and a bottle cage and ride it till it falls apart, its great and money well spent IMO ❤.
Update cant review something if you do not add a negative or something that could be better. The grips, sweet Jesus they are trash! So there you go LOL!
Prices are going back to where they were before the pandemic. $800~ish got you a one step above entry level hardtail in 2019. I bought a Giant Talon 3 back in 2019 for $550 to get back into mountain biking after not having ridden since the 90s and ended up putting a dropper on it and converting it to tubeless. Still have it though these days it just lives on my Wahoo trainer, I have a much nicer bike for riding trails these days.
Minivans are awesome. Best trade off between size, maneuverability, and interior space on the road. Yes, If you can drop the price from 1799 to 799, it was grossly overpriced. Commenter was absolutely correct. That is a 999 bike maybe a 1099 bike, not a 1799 bike, so 799 is a great discounted price.
I was aiming Roscoe 8 but since there is a sale i bought 9 beacuse of you and let me tell you,no regrets at all .Here at my place i often see people ride R8...for the money you get high quality super lookin bike. That color on R8 is freakin good lookin.Components are great and you cant ask for more at that price range .Like my brother said first time lookin at the frame of roscoe 9.''That bike has a flow'' :).Cheers
I really think what still hurts GT is in the past it made people so mad that they sold out to Asia and everyone trashed talked them so bad the brand slipped, now all of them sold out and GT makes great bikes but they just never recovered from the talk. Now GT riders that stuck consider ourselves a brotherhood and welcome in new GT riders. That LTS suspension is the best ever made I believe.
I very much agree that we need sturdy, fun, reliable options at $799. I see some people wanting that to be the price for a high-end hardtail, but when you factor in components, there's not a chance in hell that comes out to a high end bike. High end would be XX or X0 Transmission (more than $799), dropper post, fox factory 32/24, and great wheels/hubs. Even with an alloy frame, that would be way above that number. I don't want my high end hardtail to cap at $799 because I know that ain't high end. I want reliable, fun options across a range of prices and then I get to pick what fits my budget. If you're not having fun at $799, I'm not sure you're having more fun paying more for a fancier hardtail. If you find your fun is limited by $799 capabilities, then you upgrade. We should buy what makes us smile and ignore what's beyond our means (or just save $$ for a while).
Forget a mini van, if you wanna go the van way do a sprinter, or at least a ford transit. You can fit a mobile shop in a high back plus can sleep easily in it.
Always enjoy your videos & content. I harken back to your days on your M6. I started just 4 months ago on an M7. I love it. Yea it was a little $$ at $1299, but has plenty of options and is serving me well as an intermediate rider.
In my mind GT kinda dropped off a long time ago. I don't remember when exactly but late 90's maybe. In my ming I catalog them with box stores and Schwinn for whatever reason. But for a entry level bike under $800 thats a good deal. With all the bikes you have its time to get some basic tools and take on these simple projects yourself. Cutting bars down as a learning experience would make a great video for others that are learning.
I have a Honda Odyssey that I picked up for 5k and 160 miles, and it is the best mountain bike vehicle ever. I put a big 6 bike Yakima rack on it, too, and it's amazing.
I bought a Trek Roscoe 8 at the sale price last month. Its been a phenomenal bike, one of the best purchases I've ever made. But that GT is an insane deal! I'm going to look into one for my dad.
I also feel like someone getting into the sport can get something so nice that is 15 years old. I just put together a killer Cannondale Flash for under $1000 that has the carbon frame with PBR lefty. The thing is a rocket even though it has 10x137 mm drop out spacing and an old 1X10 conversion. There’s also tons of parts on the classifieds that are dirt cheap for these older bikes.
Would still go for the TREK Roscoe 8. Full disclosure I do work for Trek. Everything on the Roscoe 8 is serviceable and will last. The freehub is incredibly easy to clean and regrease. The gx cranks are solid. The warranty/aftercare is the main draw card. Unless you are mechanically savvy you want to make sure that your bike has a great warranty and that the shop you bought it from has a great attitude to any issues you are having and will be your best advocate. I cannot stress this enough. That GT is pretty rad though especially for the price - if you do get it I 100 per cent recommend upgrading the cranks to SRAM NX dub and chuck an NX or GX derailleur on it. Those SX parts use a lot of plastic that deforms with use, if you’re careful they will last though. Had a few issues with the SX powerspline cranks too, very soft Aluminium. Just my two cents worth both bikes are fantastic :)
Great content as always. One other suggestion I'll put out there for a budget hard tail is the Salsa Rangefinder line - in particular the Rangefinder Deore 12.
In the process of upgrading my Roscoe 6 that I picked up for 1100 last season. Almost got it to the spec of this bike. Only need a new fork. Looking back I should’ve dropped the extra coin for the 8
I own a Trek Procaliber 6 and I am very happy with it. Does everything what I want it to do, is my commuter and my cx bike and very comfy. Maybe I will buy a used enduro bike to have an alternative. I don't see a reason to buy a new one, I don't care about scratches. Better if they are already there, then I don't get annoyed at myself :D
Baught my first proper hardtail mtb. Trek roscoe 8. Amazing bike and spec for the price even in the UK. Thanks for the videos you made me make the decision on trek
Hey Matty, great video, always love your content. Not sure if you’ve seen any of the recent videos on GT bicycles? I guess they are in deep financial trouble and restructuring or possibly closing. they are slashing all the inventory to get rid of everything they have before restructuring,at least that’s what I have heard. You might want to dig into that a little bit for more information. This is complete hearsay on my part, but I believe that’s why the bike is so deeply discounted. Keep up the good work man!
Well, mine is, not sure the year, Roscoe 8, black with orange lettering. I'm guessing 2016ish? I love it, just rode it yesterday, Being 80 yo I don't do anything extra, but the gearing is great, 2.8 in tires for sand in the 4 corners is wonderful. Yup, it is a great bike. Last point I did put a Surley Molokai bar on it. That gives me more wrist positions.
I think you hit the nail on the head with this video. I truly believe that the majority of mountain-bikes are over price and they don't have to be. People just want a bike to ride and have fun on but the minute you start worrying about head angle and tapered head tube and the different specs of the bike you somehow lose the zeal for mountain biking because somewhere along the way it stops being fun. The price one pays for that level of fun is not worth it
I still use my Marlin 6 as main rig even ive builded full carbon XC rocket with Reba/GX/MT400 AND sold it year later since Marlin is so much more comfortable love that bike for just being reliable with 2,4 tires no tubeless coil 120mm fork bike weigh a ton but its fantastic! For road/shopping/commute i have '94 steel road frame setup as single speed with budget parts both combined are less than 1k$, wish Trek made Marlin full sus with coil coz i do not care about taper HT or TAxle to be completely honest ;D
Even better than that bike is the Haro Saguaro. Hardtail with 140mm Marzocchi, NX drivetrain, dropper post, and good Kenda tires with tubeless setup out of the box. Got my Saguaro 2 on Veterans Canteen Service for 1100, they’re also on sale on Haro’s website for more but still discounted. The Saguaro 3 has the Rockshox TK35 air fork, cues drivetrain, tranzx dropper post, tektro gemini hydro brakes, wtb wheels and tubeless kenda setup and is on the Haro site for 1400 rn but could be had under 1k on the VCS website if you’re a veteran
Minivans have rocked since the mid 80s, just the image turned off too many people. Too bad, most functional vehicle type alongside a pickup truck. as for bike, I think the Poseidon Norton deserves a shout-out. I bought a M sized bike and an L sized frame for the cottage visitors who didn't bring along a bike. Just enough and room to grow.
@@stephanematis Wish there were options like estate wagons! The Outback was only remaining one to be called as one, but nowadays they are another crossovers on the road, along with its smaller brother Crosstrek. And I would argue work vans like Sprinter or Ford Transit are ideal vehicle for carrying bikes, more than a pickup truck.
I just sold my FS frame and picked up a Banshee Paradox HT frame. All my components from the FS should swap over with no issues. I can't wait to get it built up. No more expensive maintenance . Back to simplicity.
Matty a mini pipe cutter on Amazon I think I bought mine for $15 or so. Invest in one will save you from bike store costs. I am a do it myself guy so I've bought allot of tools to work on my bikes myself. Even headset press and cup removers Amazon cheap purchase I think for both tools under $50. I do have some park tools. Certain tools you use on a regular is better to buy once and not regret buying the cheap stuff. Others you can get away with the cheap stuff
for me I got a deal for marlin 7 gen 3 2024 edition for 1000$ flat with taxes brand new from a shop while the bike you show in the vid is prob better but for me the marlin 7 has been holding up pretty well
GT has always had great bikes, to see them go out like this is sad honestly. I think the issue is that they have always offered great value for the money charged in most cases (not all of course). That value created the false perception of cheap bikes that weren't worth it for "real riders". Having lower models in department stores added to that perception, but realistically that was a good move because they were again offering value for dollar spent compared to other department store specific brands when you looked at them feature for feature and price point. They pulled from department stores because they saw this perception and knew it hurt their upper end sales, while I get that I also fell it was a poor decision because their other brands could easily have carried them until they could shift that view to a positive direction. I mean they also own Cannondale and while they aren't bad bikes they are well known for funky one off technology that doesn't stand the test of time and is difficult to service whereas GT has played it a lot more conservative for the benefit of the buyer. It is weird how that becomes a net negative when if we did that with most other products it would be a net positive.
I'll say it again: the catch with that Zaskar is the flimsy SX derailleur and shifters. My previous gen Roscoe 7's SX went bad quickly - would not stay in gear at one end of the range depending on how it was adjusted. Dangerous and frustrating. I fitted a Deore 12 speed derailleur and shifter, now it's dependable. Would rather have a 11-46T 10 speed Deore from the start.
You mentioned in another video that the bike shops are making their money on service. They need to get that bike sold so someone can ride it, and break it or decide to upgrade it over time and have them do the work. They can make up that price drop so they do it. That's my guess.
The GT is gorgeous and definitely a good deal at that price. I recently test rode a similarly discounted GT with my wife while we were bike shopping for her. My thought was that such a significant discount, while great for the consumer, indicated something is not right for GT that they're having shops discount them that much. Maybe they were one of the companies that way overproduced as the COVID boom was declining and now have an excess of bikes they need to sell?
Buy once cry once. I get what you’re saying about these cheaper bikes, but more features for the money isn’t necessarily better when it comes to mountain biking. Cheap parts will break and you will end up upgrading anyway. I started out on what I thought was a lot of bang for the buck but turned out everything started to go wrong to the point I was wishing I just paid more and got a better one form the beginning.
Well it's a sale, and if they're able to put it on sale at that price, it shows how the regular price is a rip off. Stay away from those brands that can suddenly cut the price of their products by half or more, what kind of margins are they making? Where are they making these bikes? Who and how much are the people making these bikes being paid? Is the price the only thing? Of course price is important, but there are other things ot take into account. Anyway, there are many options out there, I certainly haven't tested them all. I don't know about other offers at this price point (the sale price that is), but I would say that at it's original (list) price, there are many other better offers. And as far as hardtails go, the Ragleys are some of the best. I personnaly ride the Mmmbop and boy is it fun. Ride on !
The reason the prices are so low is that the industry has huge overstock issues and they are dumping product well below cost just to generate cash flow to stay in business. They can’t just hold the stock and sell it at regular price in a year to two because warehouse space is expensive and they have new orders coming that they committed to in 6 months. And if they cancel those with the factory they lose their business relationship with them. It’s a very bad spot for the industry that is just trying to stay afloat. It is however, a good time to buy a bike though.
So I need some reassurance!! I just spent 2000 on a SALSA Cassidy! My brother rides and really talked me into getting such a high end bike. Does anybody have any advice on any tweaks or adjustments I should make
Canyon grand Canyon 6 size XL is currently on sale, decathlon has some budget bikes in XL too but availability is spotty, there's not a lot of cheap bikes for huge guys 😂
I’m choosing between the Roscoe 7 and Roscoe 8 but not sure which one to go for. I’m a beginner trying to start mountain biking with somewhat skills on previous biking experiences. Should I spend a bit more for the 8 or save for the 7?
You got that beard looking good dude! But I do think there are better bikes for the money. For instance you can usually pick up a full suspension on sale that has all those features at $2,000. The full suspension will keep you riding for longer periods.
i love the deal. but i wish it came in different colors. not a fan of the boring forrest green lol. i know thats pretty superficial but its important to me
Hey I'm thinking about making a review video on the scott scale 970, do you know anything about that bike and why I can't find a single video about it? It seems like a really great bike for under $1k on sale right now so I'm shocked that there is nothing on it. Air forks, 29lbs, taper head, tubeless ready,1x drivetrain, hydro brakes. Seems like it has everything the marlin 7 has plus some for a fraction of the price.
I actually found the scale 970 while looking for this GT after watching your video. Compared side by side, the scott won. Only thing it didn't have over GT was the dropper
I built my GT aggressor pro to a similar spec as the zaskar and i couldnt do it for that price not even close, super deal on that GT... much better bike then ppl think
@mattyactive About to pick up a brand new 2023 Marlin7 Gen 3 for $630 vs Roscoe 7 at $1400 or roscoe 8 at $1600. Any thoughts for a casual rider thru a light to moderate trails?
Meh. There are better deals out there nowadays. For $1999 you can get a Timberjack with better components and a z2 fork. You can get the lowest spec'd cannondale habit ht for close to a grand, and if you're mechanically inclined, that leaves you plenty left over to upgrade and customize.
Matty i am considering buying a mountain bike i only want to own one mountain bike i know from watch your videos that you tested the x caliber 8 and the roscoe 8 could you please help me decide which is the better one to buy they both dropped in price and i am having a really hard time deciding PLEASE HELP ME
I think you need to review bikes at their full price because not everyone is going to get the deal of the sale price. Yeah, your bike shop sells it at that price, but GT website it's 1k. No offense but I feel like every bike you ride you say is the best bike. If you want to inform people of the best bang for your buck, you should categorize bikes specifically what they are. IE: full suspension, hard tail, gravel etc... review them at full price and what you get for that price. I love your videos but sometimes feel you mislead people with information. Like I said, no offense not trying to diss you just feel like info could be better. 👍🏼
I picked up a used Chevy traverse and I LOVE IT! If I’m just hauling one bike I can keep my gear and bike protected from elements. If my son and I are going out of town with the bikes then one of the bikes has to go in the rack. Get whatever vehicle suits your needs man. No need to get a truck if you aren’t gonna use it for more than hurling a bike. A mini van is darn near perfect for bike hauling
I've been looking at the Roscoe 7 for the past couple of years but we're watching our money. Meanwhile I still have my old 26er Trek Alpha 4900 like Seth used to ride and thinking off working on it myself to get it back on the trails. No upgradess at first, just new tubes and a bottom bracket.
The fact that they are selling that bike new for $2300 is insanity to me. Big brand bike companies are straight up robbing people with these prices. That bike is absolutely NOT worth $1500. Buy used people. There is zero reason to pay these prices.

I like how the color is the same as some of the 90 GT MTBs
It is interesting that all the Zaskar models but the LT Elite are on sale on the GT site. Maybe it’s just that shop selling it for that price.
That’s so awesome! I respect that
I have 60mm bars and they rock mate Spank spoons I have the Roscoe 8 and Ive specked it up as well
It's great that there are more decent options out there in that under $1500 range!
You need to get to central California and ride Henry Coe Park one of the top places to ride.
@@drill_fiend1097 I would argue hell no, it’s not.
I just sold my FS frame and picked up a Banshee Paradox HT frame. All my components from the FS should swap over with no issues. I can't wait to get it built up. No more expensive maintenance . Back to simplicity.
The new calibre bossnut full sus bike is definitely worth looking at.
Does it ship to America?
@LaurentiusTriarius apologies a am not sure. Hopefully they do.
Great video! That GT bike definitely a sick first MTB at this price range
I have a 2019 Roscoe 8... I still love it...
Also, REI's DRT series of bikes are so slept on... i ride a drt 1.3 and its the best bike you could buy for the price i got it for.
I got a 2021 trek Marlin 6 in Alpine Blue
Thanks
I got a roscoe 7 brand new for £900 and I love it
Well it's a sale, and if they're able to put it on sale at that price, it shows how the regular price is a rip off. Ride on !
The Polygon seems like a good budget option too.
The cool thing is, bikes online now sells GT bikes. Not sure if this bike is on there though
@@MattyActive Looks like the only GT hardtail they have listed is a gravel bike. Everything else is really squishy and more expensive.
@@mikej1348 Polygon is rad. They sold di2 carbon roadbike for $2k (1999). Definitely this era’s Giant.
Look at the Giant Talon series.
Where are you finding that price on the GT Zaskar elite? It's $990 on their site, and local bike shops have not discounted it that much.
It’s at my local bike shop, I wonder if you can refer to my bike shop price and price match 😅
So I need some reassurance!! I just spent 2000 on a SALSA Cassidy! My brother rides and really talked me into getting such a high end bike. Does anybody have any advice on any tweaks or adjustments I should make
Loved the video, glad to be your new sub!
That’s my bike! Trek Roscoe 8!!!
What is the best value budget gravel bike for a rider too tall for the Ozark Trail?
I’m not sure about that one but I think this next version of the park trail will have a size Large option
Canyon grand Canyon 6 size XL is currently on sale, decathlon has some budget bikes in XL too but availability is spotty, there's not a lot of cheap bikes for huge guys 😂
great video!! what is the weight of Trek Roscoe? do you recommend it to be used for bikepacking also?
Love my Roscoe 8. Ride it more often than my full sus.
In Canada, it is $1140 American dollars.
I’m choosing between the Roscoe 7 and Roscoe 8 but not sure which one to go for. I’m a beginner trying to start mountain biking with somewhat skills on previous biking experiences. Should I spend a bit more for the 8 or save for the 7?
Love my Roscoe 8.
Salsa has some insane deals 2200 for a 6 inch carbon bike
I built my GT aggressor pro to a similar spec as the zaskar and i couldnt do it for that price not even close, super deal on that GT... much better bike then ppl think
I ordered a Roscoe 8 last week. Anyone put frame protective skins on the bike?
@mattyactive
About to pick up a brand new 2023 Marlin7 Gen 3 for $630 vs Roscoe 7 at $1400 or roscoe 8 at $1600.
Any thoughts for a casual rider thru a light to moderate trails?
Between those 3 I would choose the Marlin in your situation.
@ what you think about brand new 2024 Roscoe 7 at $1100?
Have you taking a look to the NS eccentric ALu, it is an impressive bike for under $1300
Roscoe 8, Growler 50 or honzo DL.
Do you have any experience with Cannondale habit ht? There isn't many reviews on it. Thanks in advance
I don’t but I’m planning to try and get one out on the trail for a video! Just have to find a shop who has one
I have habit ht and love it! I fitted 29x2.80 tires to ad comfort.
I luv my Roscoe 8!
Meh. There are better deals out there nowadays. For $1999 you can get a Timberjack with better components and a z2 fork. You can get the lowest spec'd cannondale habit ht for close to a grand, and if you're mechanically inclined, that leaves you plenty left over to upgrade and customize.
just got a 2021 Marline 6, not one scratch on it, for 350? I am also new to MTB!
I tried to get into MTB's, but I hate how they feel. Tried 2 of them and was greatly unimpressed with both. Gravel bikes FTW!!!
Your just not doing the right mountain biking if you don’t like the way they feel
That zaskar says 990 in my area
Matty i am considering buying a mountain bike i only want to own one mountain bike i know from watch your videos that you tested the x caliber 8 and the roscoe 8 could you please help me decide which is the better one to buy they both dropped in price and i am having a really hard time deciding PLEASE HELP ME
and the procaliber 8? It's good value for money?
I think you need to review bikes at their full price because not everyone is going to get the deal of the sale price. Yeah, your bike shop sells it at that price, but GT website it's 1k. No offense but I feel like every bike you ride you say is the best bike. If you want to inform people of the best bang for your buck, you should categorize bikes specifically what they are. IE: full suspension, hard tail, gravel etc... review them at full price and what you get for that price. I love your videos but sometimes feel you mislead people with information. Like I said, no offense not trying to diss you just feel like info could be better. 👍🏼
I can't find that GT bike with such a large discount
And about the minivan.....best vehicle ever! 20yrs owning multiple trucks and my minivan is more versatile 🤣🤣
@@jlmercado76 lmao. Dude stop lying!🤣
No thru axle on the rear. They can keep it. You cant upgrade the rear with modern components. If they had that I’d 100% support this bike.
Pipe cutter at harbor freight, easy
I picked up a used Chevy traverse and I LOVE IT! If I’m just hauling one bike I can keep my gear and bike protected from elements. If my son and I are going out of town with the bikes then one of the bikes has to go in the rack.
Get whatever vehicle suits your needs man. No need to get a truck if you aren’t gonna use it for more than hurling a bike. A mini van is darn near perfect for bike hauling
Bring back 26!!!
A 26er would be easier to unload from that minivan.
I can't believe he said the "M" word (minivan).
Is that PNW handlebar ?
