I appreciate Don’s lucid yet concise description as well as fairly clean tone playing that doesn’t rely on blazing technique or overwrought overdrive pedal settings and histrionics to demo the guitar. Meaning: He demos the guitar and the pickups very well, and NOT the pedal or amp. With this demo, you can really hear how the GUITAR sounds. It’s where the focus clearly is. A great player with a product-focused approach. Bravo.
Neil Schon makes his PRS semi hollow rock. Don is displaying the guitar with a gentle, cleaner amp setting. I’ve been playing PRS for over 25yrs, and I know what’s going on in this video ... the demoed guitar here is a beast of versatility. If Don wanted to, he could do another video with tones galore.
When the guitar becomes more of a piece of art than an instrument or a tool, it’ll be the time when it will belong to a museum and not in the guitarists hands. I feel like most of the PRS guitars are so beautiful and polished to be touched by guitar players.
I think the goal of a PRS guitar is to be the best possible instrument in every aspect. I get what you're saying though - they are almost too nice. They do have other guitars such as the S2 line that are a bit less fancy for us "regular" players!
Eh I just think of them as modded Gibsons that look like strats. I'm not a fan of the crazy options so I bought a Mccarty, have never been more satisfied.
That’s actually how you get the 12 pickup combinations: Position 1: 1- Bridge Hum 2- Bridge Single Position 2: 3- Bridge Hum + Mid 4- Bridge Single + Mid Position 3: 5- Bridge Hum + Neck Hum 6- Bridge Single + Neck Hum 7- Bridge Single + Neck Single 8- Bridge Hum + Neck Single Position 4: 9- Mid + Neck Single 10- Mid + Neck Hum Position 5: 11- Neck Hum 12- Neck Single
That's exactly how my hair looked like when I was 21. Sorta like Whats Killing Gilbert Grape? I got to get me one of those semi hollow for my guitar collection!!
Amazing guitar, I’ve preordered mine through Sweetwater in McCarty Sunburst 🤙🏽 Out of curiosity, the neck pickup is shown here with the pole pieces towards the neck. But sometimes I see this model with the neck pickup pole pieces placed towards the bridge. Is this a customizable option?
Hi, Ronchi22. The pole pieces pointed towards the neck would be the standard way and I would assume that they'll all be like that when they come in. If you have a preference for the poles to be closer to the bridge, that is something our guitar shop can do when your guitar comes into stock. I would get in touch with your Sales Engineer and they'll be able to find out what that would cost. Thanks for your interest! @@sweetwater Actually the PRS Special 22 Semi Hollow LTD with the MT (multi tap) pickups that came out 2 years ahead of this Core model has the neck pickup facing the bridge as standard. This has to do with the MT pickups and how they balance. But yah, a beast of a guitar. My main axe.
@@neilvg1551 So it's not important that someone demoing this guitar for us have motivation enough to give an "in touch" review and act as if they actually have interest in the instrument. I usually like this guy but he doesn't even know the correct positions for the 5-way switch. Nor does he demonstrate the push pulls.
Really nice instrument, but out of reach for many of us. I could be happy with a half dozen or more guitars for the price of this one... Nice to have so many tones, but still doesn’t have a few others that a player would want. So much better to have many different “player” guitars at 1/6 th the price.. But that said, if your budget allows, this would be a worthy addition to a higher priced collection for sure!
Many a gigging professional would prefer a masterpiece like this with so many tonal options in one high end guitar. There is satisfaction and confidence in quality workmanship. When you’ve gigged a core PRS for a while you understand.
@@judahbmusic You sound like a PRS disciple.. well let me tell you, it’s no fun when somebody rips off your baby.. I’ll take a well setup Squier or Epiphone to a gig any day and be happy about it. Masterpieces are for home studios or collectors. 🤣. This is just MY opinion, so no need to try to convince me otherwise.. I had my share of gigs being stressed about expensive personal stuff, no thanks, not for me. I guess I’m too type A without faith in our fellow man. I’m a full-time working musician and I own and gig almost daily with this guitar. I do have some concerns about loss and theft, but not enough that I would not bring my main tool and instrument to the job. To me all of life has the potential for risk. NOT CORRECT!!! At least not to the PRS demo guy. ACCORDING TO HIM it is NOT a standard 5-way switch. According TO HIM the middle position is the bridge and neck pups, so one can utilize the different sounds made available via the 2 toggle switches for coil tapping. Then the 4th position is middle and neck, with 5th being neck only. SORRY.
4K for a guitar that doesn't have stainless steel frets....come on Paul. I know he explained it at a Ted talk but stainless steel frets make all the difference especially in high end guitars.
The "NEW 2021 core models" may never come. It's almost November 2021, and there hasn't been a single one available to the public. Why call it a new 2021 core model when they can only hit the customers in 2022?
Looks beautiful, sounds very meh. Nice playing, of course, but there is nothing that stands out to me about the guitar's sound. If I was listening to this blindfolded, and you told me this was a $400 guitar, I'd believe you.
A master of all trades, this PRS Special is mind-bogglingly versatile! Make sure you like, comment, and subscribe if you enjoyed this video!
Actually, the middle position on the 5 way is both bridge and neck not the Narrowfield isolated
The chap even says “there are 12 different pickup combos” but doesn’t realise how that’s possible if the middle isn’t both pickups. Whoops
Thank you for this review, beautiful semi-hollow PRS!

The middle position is the neck and bridge pickup together not the narrow field by itself. You never get the narrow field by itself
Unless you mod it, which I highly recommend. Just add a push pull
finally, an alternative for a super eagle

Yep. Be horrible if someone saw this and decided not to get one for lack of interest.
Why is the neck pickup not flipped on this one? Some have it flipped and some don’t. Any idea why?

I get it. I love PRS but can’t stand those birds. The aesthetic is not always for me but they are super nice, play great and are extremely well made.
That is one beautiful sounding guitar!
1:52 Actually wrong, PRS official video mentions that the 3rd position is actually Bridge and Neck pickup together, not the middle pickup alone.
That’s actually how you get the 12 pickup combinations:
Position 1:
1- Bridge Hum
2- Bridge Single
Position 2:
3- Bridge Hum + Mid
4- Bridge Single + Mid
Position 3:
5- Bridge Hum + Neck Hum
6- Bridge Single + Neck Hum
7- Bridge Single + Neck Single
8- Bridge Hum + Neck Single
Position 4:
9- Mid + Neck Single
10- Mid + Neck Hum
Position 5:
11- Neck Hum
12- Neck Single
Damn that sounds beautiful!! If I ever leave the UK and come to USA I will have to visit sweetwater after all these videos I’ve watched
