  • What is the right hollowbody guitar for you? With so many options like the Gibson Es330, 335, 345, and 355. You could choose one of the many Gretsch or PRS guitars. One of Baxters favorite's is the thinline from Fender. Let us know what your go to Hollow or Semi Hollow is for blues rock or jazz or whatever style you are playing.

Many years ago I owned a Les Paul Deluxe but I sold it to buy a car. Yes, I know, dumbest decision ever, but it was the only thing I owned that was worth anything and I wanted a car. A couple of years later an old guy nearby was selling his early 70s Gibson 335, I saw it but didn't think I could afford to give him a fair price. A couple of days after I saw it my girlfriend went back to him and bought it for my birthday present. I now own a few guitars but that's the one that I will never sell, and we celebrated our 30th wedding anniversary last year. So for purely emotional reasons, that's my favourite kind of semi-hollow guitar.

My first electric was a 1965 Epiphone Casino (Gibson ES330 counterpart). Yes, since it’s a hollow body you must learn to tame its tendencies towards feeding back, but without the center block of the 335 it rings out and is therefore usable acousticly without an amp. No plugging in to practice. Also nice in that sense for songwriting. Oh, and it’s way lighter than a 335.

I have a 330 and and 335. They are completely different animals and I love them both. I was lucky to hit on a new 330L 10 years ago or so when they briefly were selling those. Having the neck join in the same spot as my 335 was the key for me taking the plunge, love it.

You're absolutely correct The 330 (Casino) and the 335, while they look similar, are entirely different guitars. The Casino is, of course, fully hollow while 335 is really a solid-body guitar. I don't think that the 335's hollow wings do much of anything at all except perhaps cause feedback under certain conditions..
My Casino is the older version with the neck joining the body at the16h fret. While this does mean that extreme upper frets are not readily available, the neck being so firmly a part of the body gives this guitar an overall acoustical resonance that the longer-neck joint version may not possess.
I recently re-strung it to Nashville Tuning for recording and it really does chime and sing like the top half of a 12 string.
A lot of great music has been made on those old 330s and Casinos.
Good luck and good music to you with yours.

I have a few T style thinlines in my collection. All of them have something that makes them different to one another.
Baxter, you talked about rotational playing of the guitars on the stand. I have all my guitars in cases lined up and just go to the next one in line when I feel like playing.
Knowing that a thinline or semi hollow is coming up next always puts a bigger smile on my face. There's just something special about them.
The combination of weight relief and semi hollow resonance works for me.
Jonathan, you also talked about your Gretsch and all your points were exactly what I experienced with my Gretsch G6118t Players Edition Anniversary.
That one on the wall behind you (Jonathan) a little while back looked similar.
I don't/can't play like Chet or Rockabilly but always enjoy the way my cover songs and jams come out.
The controlled feedback that I can get from the High Sensitive Filtertron pickups and the resulting vibration of the guitar against my body is what you reminded me of when describing your Gretsch experience. I'm 63 years old and literally burst out laughing every time this happens. Still a kid at heart. 🤣😂🤣😂
Thanks, guys, for yet again reminding me of how much fun life is with a guitar. (or lots of different guitars 😁)

One of the things that is most important to me in a guitar is balance. Both sitting down and standing up with strap. A pourly balanced guitar just takes a lot of the joy out of playing for me. When I bought my Casino I tried both the Coupe and the Worn. I really wanted to like the Coupe. Smaller body and better upper fret access. But it had bad neck dive. Casino was fine.

I played an Epiphone Joe Pass model until the frets needed changing and the varnish wore off the neck. The thing I found about most vintage hollow bodies is that there usually is a buzz somewhere. They develop over time and eventually, I didn't do too well on the used market. That frilly thing on the trapeze usually is a problem and it can be heard through the pickups. Instead of solder welding them back on, consider taking it off.

yes ... that's the difficult thing about trying to pick out a guitar. You really do need time with it to decide. Another thing is having time to try several back to back in an environment where you can crank the amp a bit and even try them in different amps.

Unfortunately I had to return two PRS SE Piezo Hollowbodies to Sweetwater. First one had fret buzz my local luthier couldn't get rid of; sent it back to Sweetwater. Had them do their own setup on the second. It developed fret buzz two days after receiving in the open chords. May have been fixable, but got so frustrated I returned that one too.

Epiphone has a fully hollow 330 style in the casino.
    The Emporer swingstar is cool.
Agree with the PRS SE hollow being cool too.

I have a 69 Fender Telecaster Thinline Japanese reissue and a Guild Starfire SC I love them both but the Guild has a great tone nice action and is a super light guitar for the size I grew up in Westerly Rhode Island and worked at the Guild shop back in the 1980's and they made some great guitars

Saw a local band in which the guitar player put black foam inside the guitar so you cant see it from far away but it helped somehow with the feedback. I dont know much about it but it looked cool.

I've been searching for the right semi hollow for years now. I keep on returning to my 80's Japanese copy of a Gibson Trini Lopez . It was modified nicely before I got it and it radiates with character. I should stop looking for a new , shiny version of it.

My go-to semihollow is my Schecter Corsair hardtail which is my closest thing to a 335, and I have an Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor II Pro which I also like a lot. I have some others, and the usual complement of traditional solid body guitars (which I also like), but these two do "a thing" that the others don't, and they didn't cost an arm and a leg. I aspire to higher-end versions when I have an arm and/or leg to spare, and there are others like the 330/Casino style guitar and the PRS hollowbodies that I've yet to try but have a feeling I will like.

My Japanese Lefty Gretsch Country Gent 2 semi hollow with filtertrons( The George Harrison one) is one of the most graceful, charming, and refined guitars I have. The guitar you play at the Palladium.
My Korean Lefty G2420t is completely hollow. It has a black top pickup and sounds like it’s looking for a fight with a bottle in a bar.

As someone also from Ky, I too find the 330 and all the 335 style gibsons for that matter on the ugly side. I love how they sound, dislike how they look. I’m not saying I wouldn’t ever play them, but I wouldn’t be buying it for the looks. It’s something about the double cutaway that looks off to me on that style of guitar. Loved the banter. Have a great one guys!

Just buy a Duesenberg. It probably does not fit in these "usual" categories but i really think these guitars are great and suprisingly versatile. I got a Duesenberg Caribou which is just a little bit hollow but i like it so much i'm thinking about getting another Duesenberg to replace my semihollow Gretsch, or maybe keep all of these guitars.

Im a small guy (5'7" 170#) and I love my White Falcon. I was mainly a Martin dreadnaught player for many years so the size dosnt really bother me. That said I only gig it in nicer more spacious places where I can keep a eye on it. Dont want my pride and joy to go walking off, or get too banged up. Most gigs I'll take an SG with a partscaster tele as a backup. After many years Ive discovered I can pretty much get any tone I need out of any guitar if you just twist a few knobs.

Scotty Moore, Carl Perkins, Cliff Gallup, Brian Setzer, John Lennon, et. al. seemed to manage well enough with fully hollow-bodies. I have a Custom Shop ES 330 1959 reissue. I love it, especially for clean tones and only slightly dirty tones.
