  • Straumann released their new metal scanbodies in early 2024. Watch our video on why you should start using them instead of the old PEEK scanbodies.

    00:00 Introduction
This is a quick video to make you aware of the new metal scanbodies that were just released by Straumann early this year.
These new scanbodies are made entirely of titanium which is a big improvement over the previous version which was made of peek plastic.
    00:23 Advantages
And that’s because there are some major advantages of titanium vs peek.
First, titanium isn’t nearly as susceptible to deformation as peek.
Peek scanbodies will typically warp with repeated use, but worse than that, they can even be deformed on first use if proper care isn’t taken to ensure they’re being seated correctly.
Second, these metal scanbodies are autoclavable up to 100 times. And at the current price, that’s less than 60 cents per use.
If you restore a lot of Straumann implants this is huge cost saver.
Third, they're radiopaque which makes for easy verification of proper seat to the implant.
Peek plastic is highly radiolucent which has always been a disadvantage.
Fourth, these new scanbodies have a non-reflective coating that eliminates the need for scan powder.
    01:16 Laser Markings
In addition to those material advantages, another cool feature is the addition of laser markings on each scanbody to show you the platforms that it’s compatible with.
For instance, this scanbody for the TLC & TLX implants has markings of NT/RT and WT.
That tells you that it can be used for all of those platforms.
This is a really useful feature for identifying your scanbodies and ensuring that you're using the correct one.
And since those marking show up in the scan, it also allows your lab to verify that the scanbody used matches the platform mentioned on the Rx.
On the other side of the scanbody is a laser etch of the reference number which can be helpful when it's time to order a new one.
    02:00 Replace Peek Scanbodies
We do highly recommend that you replace any of the old peek scanbodies you might be using with these improved metal ones.
For now you will still be able to use the old ones, but our understanding is that Straumann will be dropping support of those in the future.

    Thanks for the useful information.
I have a question for you. Our lab has some issues with Zr crowns before cementing them on to Variobase. Most often there is a slight rotation of the crown, and it can be a challenge to maintain good contact points to the adjacent teeth. Not sure if that's normal? e.g. the cement gap or a problem with the designing or the sintering process.
    Spinning can be roughly 10-15°.

Are these also cross compatible between BLX & TLX like the peek ones?

      They are not cross compatible.
