    • What's the difference ...
    The Sony RX100 VII has been known as the King of Compact Cameras, it's portable, it has a 24-200mm Super Zoom Lens and it has all the functionality of a DSLR or a Mirrorless Camera, and then Apple said that the iPhone 11 Pro Max is capable of Pro-Level Photograhy. So in this episode, we purchased our own iPhone 11 Pro Max and Sony RX100 VII and when into Melbourne's Botanical Gardens to test and compare these two camera systems.
    But before that, we made a quick pit stop at our favourite Pizza Restaurant, favourite Pho shop in Springvale.
    We did some Food Photography, Telephoto Photography, Steadicam Shots and Night Photography to compare these two cameras. For the Night Mode Test, we conducted it in Docklands, until we found that it was too bright, so we headed on over to the heart of Darkness at the Dandenong Mountains. And once we were done, we headed on over to the Pub at the Nottinghill Hotel.
    To test the video stabilisation on these two cameras, we pitted it against the GoPro Hero 7 Black, check out the video to find out how it went.

    Although the RX100 was better in some cases, sometimes the iPhone was better, and the iPhone I always carry around and is one touch away from Instagram or whatever app.
    It goes to show how much under pressure the photo camera industry is, set aside the higher-end.

    • @JeremyToh
      @JeremyToh  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Which is probably why there has been no more RX100 since the Mark 7. The camera that is always with you is the best camera! ✌️

    • @tyruscharles
      @tyruscharles 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The iPhone is virtually never "better" unless you want small phone size photos without editing. If you want to blow up the photos or zoom in on photos and print, the differences between an iPhone and a real camera with a 1" sensor are no comparison.

    • @18yearsoldnot
      @18yearsoldnot ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@tyruscharles 1yr later and iPhone 14pro has almost a 1 inch sensor so detail and dynamic range are now better on iPhone. I will say though that the zeiss optics of the rx100 are much much better than a smartphone though, but only pros will be able to notice it clearly because they have been exposed to using quality lenses and normal people haven’t. iPhones use the over-sharpening and micro-contrast enhancements to hide the fact that the lenses they use are mostly plastic lens elements with no expensive coatings.

      That’s a very interesting perspective. I just learned that fun fact from one of our viewers. I couldn’t believe that Sony made the sensors, but they do. They also made the Walkman and Discman, until Apple killed it with an iPod which kicked started the smartphone camera trend. I guess it’s the Circle of Life. Thanks for the super informative video. I’ve been thinking about getting a new camera and was comparing RX100 VII to RX10 IV. Based on this video it seems the most important question for photographers these days is ‘which camera will do things that smartphones will not?’ My choice is now clear, smartphones are competing vigorously with compacts, but can never replicate longer zooms (eg 600mm of the RX10 IV) or larger sensors. For now anyway.

    • @JeremyToh
      @JeremyToh  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for tuning in. We're really happy you've enjoyed it. The type of camera you choose really depends on your situation. If you're travelling and you're clumsy and lose a lot equipment, you'll be happy to know the iPhone can do a lot. But if you're a tinkerer, a true connoisseur but you're forced to travel light, you may enjoy the RX100 a lot more. But like you said for now, Smartphones still can't replicate longer zoom.

  • @Lynd8
    @Lynd8 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Instead of an "either or..." I think the Rx100 VII is a nice complement to an iPhone. I think it's getting tough to beat an iphone on a sunny day shot where your subject is fairly close, and they are getting amazing for night photography as well. I currently have the iPhone 13 pro and as good as it is, the tele only goes to 75mm or so, so to have a reach of 200 with the RX100 is awesome and to be able to have some more control over apertures and speed is nice as well for when you're trying to be creative.

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts. It almost doesn’t make sense anymore for getting a compact camera. Compact Cameras currently still have the edge on optical zoom, but for how long? We compared the Galaxy S20 Ultra against the RX100. 108 Megapixel vs 1-Inch Camera sensor... The result was a draw. A quibble about the lenses and comparing the size to the full-frame 200mm lens: while the FF 200mm lens really is 200mm, the smaller the sensor, the smaller the lens can be. For example, the RX100 has a 200mm *equivalent* lens; its actual size at full telephoto is only 72mm.

    Cell phones make the images look better because they process them automatically so for amateurs they appear to be better. Cameras have bigger sensors real flahes not led diodes. With phone cameras the led light is bright I see light spots after being exposed. Another pro with cameras is that they have autofocus assist light the small red laser that cameras shoot out to focus and just flash to light the scene. While phones use flash once to focus and another flash to actually light the scene. One more pro that I can think of for compact cameras is that when you set a timer you can back away from the camera and it will still focus up until the camera actually takes a picture. With phones you cant set a timer with flash. It will only focus when the shutter button is pressed and if you back away from the camera the phone will determine that you were close and the flash intensity will be low causing your image to be underexposed.

    Photos in RAW format taken on the iPhone do not provide as many capabilities as RAW photos from digital cameras. But the phone takes convenience and mobility, where there are no increased requirements for photography. I have a Sony RX100 III, it’s good, but it’s not worth the money.

    Apple uses three sensors for different focal lenghts -- to get around the fact that, unlike the RX100, it doesn't have a zoom lens. It's building up an image via multiple exposures, not by using all three cameras at once. The RX100 also has a multi-shot HDR mode, it you're into that sort of thing.

      Thanks for tuning in. If an amateur that’s willing to learn about photography, and given the choice between an RX100 or an iPhone, I think the RX100 is a solid choice, it has a variable focal length and yet it’s compact enough to fit in your pocket, and it has all the manual camera features that will help you learn about photography. (You’ll also have to learn about using Sony’s confusing menus, but it’s the choice you have to make as a photographer) But if you’re an amateur that just want good photos to be shared quickly, and you don’t want to be messing with ISO, Shutter speed and Aperture, a lot of the flagship smartphones today can take incredibly beautiful images. I hope that helps you with your question.

    Of course there is the minor detail that one cannot place or receive calls, browse the internet or do word processing on the Sony camera. The iPhone is a mini computer with a decent camera as a bonus. That is all most people will need on a trip! I have a Nikon D500 camera kit with several lenses. It's a heavy bag! I enjoy using it. That said, I have left it behind on a couple trips precisely because I didn't want to deal with that bag! I would never want to leave my phone behind. The Sony would make a nice compact accessory but it cannot replace a smartphone!

    You can see GoPro is at the CENTRE where you are holding this assembly.
    Whereas iPhone n SONY are away on levers. So that means any SHAKE which is produced (by walk/ running) is going to get MULTIPLIED with the lever LENGTH. Did you get me? And that's the reason why iphone n Sony are producing more shake than GoPro in the resulting video.

    Whoever still have a slight idea smartphone would beat a real camera, just take a shot, put it into the computer screen, and zoom in.
    It looks good in the small smartphone screen on instatagram doesn't mean it looks good zoomed in on a screen.
    And the test wasn't quite fair, they didn't use the RX100 in full strength. Taking raw, with tripod, manual aperature/shutter/iso, and put the raw into Lightroom, edit it, export.
    Now if you are serious of taking picture, you just want to delete those shit taken from smartphone.
    PIty that the bandwagon now is taking shitty picture around 1-2 megabyte, click and done. That's Apple marketing calling itself Pro.
    Seriously?

    So funny, there are 2 important things, these are distortions and depth, photos from the phone will always distort your face and photos will be flat .... I will not say anything about night shooting. And if the photo is flat and distorts the face .... Then this is not a photo but a parody of it.

    • @Innovate-pq9ci

    • @RiceCubeTech
      @RiceCubeTech 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Innovate4293 it will never be true to life and the lens compression will always be awful on phones. Why? Because they’re usually like 3-7mm focal length lenses but because of sensor crop factor they multiply out to FOVs like 24 and 50mm. (Standard and 2x focal lengths usually) they aren’t actual 24 mm and 50mm lenses and will therefore never truly match a real 50mm lens. Even the RX will distort a bit when compared to Sony’s own full frame cameras

It was useless for stills, it could not capture a fast moving jet, and anything zoomed in was a blurry mess. My Lumix G9 with a 14-140 lens totally blew it out of the park in this instance. I have now iphone 11 since 2020 but in 2013 all you can get is iPhone 5S. I bought in local Costco Sony RX II with zeiss lens 28mm-70mm f1.8-4.9 and I was amazed with the output. Not to mention you are getting raw files not only jpegs. In 2015 I replaced with new RX 100V - wider and brighter lens (a little bit) 24mm-70mm f1.8-2.8. The same one inch sensor 20MB. What I really love is how camera preform in the low light situation, I don’t like the new lens where they sacrifice f1.8 to 2.8 is a big drop! I don’t care to have 200mm but everyone has to decide for himself. From now on (due to convenience) i use more my iPhone 11 than Sony but Sony still can capture raw files where iphone has only weak heic! On top old Sony still has better video! At the aperture 1.8 I’m able to get way better footage than on the iPhone. Slow motion is also up to 960 FPS vs 240 on the iPhone. Just saying...

(Still first impressions at this stage) I think it may give Sony a run for its money, but it does have some minor disadvantages. The f1.8 on my RX100 Mk4 was sweet, but i think it depends on the project and what tools is required to complete that project. A lot of what we do is on the run, we are always in search of the ultimate lightest and swiss army knife camera. The RX100 Mk7 is definitely that camera. But like we said we dont always carry it around so the iPhone 11 Pro fills in that gap during its absence. Hope you are staying safe during these crazy times. 😷✌

For example many people would buy a DSLR with only the kit lens & find it met 99% of their needs so never bought another lens. And some of these phones are now covering a similar range, & do video really well so why buy a camera? I think some people buy a camera use it for a while, & then get lazy and use their phone all the time!

      If you need to shoot everything with professional controls, over iso, wb, shutter speed, but don’t need something big. The RX100 M7 is a good choice. We’ve been testing the Sony ZV-1, the f1.8 lens gives excellent depth of field. The iPhone depth of field may be fake but it’s getting better with all the machine learning power. Hope you are happy with your choice. Cheers!
