Unlike the Disney version, it continues after the events of the original tale with the Prince and Mermaid trying to find a way to be together permanently, and fighting the sea witch.
Reader’s Digest is a monthly magazine. I first discovered it at my grandparents’ house and now I have a subscription. I didn’t know they used to do animations. Part of the reason I like the magazine so much is that they have four entire (small) sections of jokes, including one specifically for jokes and funny anecdotes regarding the military. There’s also puzzles in the back.
There is also a version of the little mermaid from the cartoon The Triplets, some episodes are more in line with the original like this little mermaid while others are completely different, you will only know by watching. They also go to fables, and real-life stories, both literally with real historical figures, and fictional books and novels.

There’s another interesting if tragic bit of information on how Andersen made the little mermaid in the first place that is actually related to his own life. Hans Andersen was at the very least bisexual and was in love with a friend of his Edvard Collin describing it in his diary and some letters, unfortunately Collin didn’t feel the same and Andersen was heart broken when Collin finally got engaged, with Andersen unable to express his feelings out in public about the whole thing. So one can easily piece together where some of Little mermaids influence came from.
There is also another anime named “Bubble” that takes a lot influence from the Little mermaid and even name drops the fairy tale, but is otherwise unrelated.
In the subject of animated movies that take inspiration from a fairytale to make a story in a modern setting I hope that Belle by Mamoru Hossoda will be mentionned in the video about the Beauty from the Beauty and the Beast
There are a reference to soviet Rusalochka in anime Madoka Magica in the design of Octavia the Mermaid Witch. You can see these unusual animation tricks in the witch's movement
There was also the little mermaid story from happily ever after: a fairytale for every child. I remember being mesmerized by that one as a kid as well.
FYI, if no one is aware, the reason The Little Mermaid gets eaten up by sharks in Shrek 2 is because the CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg disapproved of The Little Mermaid’s direction when he was a chairman at Disney. He ended up leaving and the film turned out to be a huge success. His pettiness towards the success of the movie is clearly seen by the Shrek 2 scene and its recent movie Ruby Kraken where the antagonist bears a striking resemblance to Ariel. 😂😂
He also wanted the song “part of your world” cut from the movie over some test screen kids were bored during the song, the directors and other in the movies production had to fight back hard against him to keep the song in the movie considering it a major point to show Ariels motivations and character.
Wait you worked for Disney?? AND YOU MET ARIEL’S VOICE ACTOR? That’s so freaking cool! What was your job? Also based on your voice I thought you were maybe around 18 but I’m guessing that’s not the case😅

There's also a version of The Little Mermaid in the Rankin Bass film The Daydreamer. It ends with her permanently stuck between the land and the sea, which is arguably much sadder than the original fairytale ending. Rankin Bass always [rightfully] gets credit with having the best Christmas specials, but their fairy tale and storybook adaptions are unfairly overlooked.

There is a really beautiful Russian story about a couple who wish for a child. At some point either of them make a snow girl. One day the snow girl comes alive and want to spend time with the couple. During the whole winter the couple grow to love the snow girl and spend a lot of time together with her. Alas the winter soon came to an end and the snowgirl tell them she has to travel to a colder land. The couple beg her to stay and the snowgirl give in. As spring arrived with it's warmth the snow girl began to melt. No matter how much her parents tried to prevent it she soon began a puddle. After losing their pride and joy the couple held on to her memory with sorrow and warmth while spring turned to summer. After august had passed it become winter once again and one chilling winter morning they heard childish laughter a familiar voice calling for them from outside. Once outside they cried, laughed and rejoiced while greeting her with welcoming arms. The little snow girl was not a human child and couldn't always live by their side but nothing would stop her from returning each winter and bring them much love and joy.

Hey, I'm loving your series! Just a quick Q&A, when you said you didn't like the Ever After High episode with Meashell because in your words, "not only is her last name mermaid", does that mean it's because you didn't like her last name or her last name was so obvious, anyone could guess?
It was so obvious that how would u not guess she’s a mermaid. I also just think that Ever After High can do a lot better than making a cheap Disney knock off

Thank you for the video. Really like that you pointed out how Disney's version is "inspired" by japanese one in so many ways. I also disagree that they took "little things" only, there are plenty of additions in japanese version from original story Disney took a liberty to steal. Which is the most ironic considering they have all those policies about their own characters. Same with Disney version. They completely changed the original story's ending, which places this version to the last place for me automatically.
If you make a video about the different Odette from Swan Lake I hope that you will include Ahirue and Rue from Princess Tutu even if it's an anime and not exaclty an adaptation.
9:06 Some of those GoodTimes Entertainment films are from *Jetlag* which you can tell by the anime style animation. _Snow White, Cinderella_ and _Sleeping Beauty_ from this collection are all from Jetlag.
OMG, you actually remembered Goodtimes! 💖 I know most of their movies are garbage but it's my Nostalgia 🤗, two movies I liked was "a Little princess" and "Cinderella"
Beautiful I'm looking forward to the beautiful and the beast after it can you do the comprehension of the frogs
Once again Marina from Saban's Little Mermaid gets the shaft.
The only Reader's Digest I know of is the magazine. They would publish intellectual articles and excerpts from books. They also had a collection of abridged novels in volumes by genre.
It seems like the same company. I would believe they presented animated adaptations of classic tales.
As a kid I loved Disney's version, GoodTimes Entertainment's and Rusalochka :)
I also just think that Ever After High can do a lot better than making a cheap Disney knock off
Yeah, I can see why you said you like her design in the profile art rather than the cartoon. It's less, how do I say this, all over the place?
EARLY YET AGAIN
i don't have a favorite ariel tbh.. but i do love ever after high's meeshell design
LMAOOO THE ENDING.. you're right i fear. The little mermaid 2 literally killed ariel's character it doesn't exist ❤
I know this is a weird suggestion cause there arnt a lot of adaptation of the story, but I would love to see if u do a video on Oddete from Swan Lake
Will you re-upload your animated rankings of Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel soon?
Yes! I finished the Rapunzel one! Working on Sleeping Beauty right now
I love Ariel
9:51 Reader’s Digest is a family magazine company
There is an aerial that you have missed and it’s sort of kind of like an anime and this explains that picture it’s called mermaid Melody kind of like little mermaid completely different. It’s basically magical girl mermaid pop stars there is a character named Lucia and she fell in love with, a prince named Kaito and they are together and married, but he fell in love with a mermaid turns out it was his classmate Lucia along because when she is on land, she has human legs
I felt really bad for Melody in Little Mermaid 2. I actually like her character. The rest of the film? Eeeeeesh.
Can u do Alice next pls? I ❤ ur vids btw! Especially this series! Keep it up
You missed one called bubble it’s surprisingly good. It’s inspired by the story but doesn’t really follow it.
Sorry, I'm russian and you pronounce русалочка so completely and utterly wrong I had a cultural shock. Not a language you know, so I don't blame you.
If you wanna know how to actually say it I can brake it down with other words. Ru as in rule, Sa as in salsa, Lo as in London, Ch as in church, and Ka as in karma, and you need to make the emphasis on the Sa, not on Li how you did
I have been searching for fairy tale police department bc i forgot about it the only episode i remeber is the cinder episode
They are all Wonderful for different colors and values
Apparently Dreamworks includes a lot of jabs at The Little Mermaid because of Jeffrey Katzenberg
Ah, goodtimes entertainment, so many memories 😂😂
You should do Belle I really want to see the rankings for her
9:06 Some of those GoodTimes Entertainment films are from *Jetlag* which you can tell by the anime style animation. _Snow White, Cinderella_ and _Sleeping Beauty_ from this collection are all from Jetlag.
I wish you have found Jetlag sooner to tell us where you rank Snow White, Cinderella, and Felicity. Besides the Disney version, people claim Jetlag's Cinderella as their animated favorite. Her very unique character design certainly helps.
Sometimes I wonder if I should remake my first four videos in this series because I missed so many!
@@kingdomorange2 If you remake your video about the Cinderellas you could include the one from the Grimm Variation anime by Clamp
@@eleonorepb4565 There's really no reason too, especially for something so recent. The sources he got so many versions of different characters are already enough.
Why didn't you want to do The Little Mermaid?
It's not that I didn't "want" to do it, I struggled to find enough Little Mermaids at first, then with the help of a lot of people in the comments I was able to find more and more Little Mermaid shows then I was able to make this
@@kingdomorange2 and I thought it was because of...it's not even a contest with Ariel! 😂 (she's my favorite DP)
Oh, the Little Mermaid from Golden Films... that reminds me, we forgot to include Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and Snow White from Goodtimes Productions/Jetlag in your previous videos.
You should talk about Happily Ever After Fairytales for Every Child, I notice your rankings never include those versions. Wish they did because I loved the Little Mermaid from that one.
Also FTPD is Australian, Simsala Grimm is German
Happily Ever After I can't do because I can't get clips into Final Cut Pro
Maybe you could do animated Belle/Beauty characters next
Saban's Adventures of Disney ahs Marina who is a great character and basically version of Ariel. Wish you covered her.
Can you do Belle/beauty and the Beast next?
La historia de marina fue triste por amor 😭 se suicida y el príncipe la vio. Convertise en espuma 🧼 la voy a ver.
This video is super awesome, beautiful, and amazing! I give this video 100/100 points! Honestly, my most favorite versions of The Little Mermaid are Disney, Simsala Grimm, Shrek, Fairy Tale Police Department, Ever After High, The Fairytaler, Good Times Entertainment, and Regal Academy! I mostly love Ariel from Disney. She has the most beautiful voice.
🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹❤🦞🐙🦀🪸🧡🧜🏻🧜🏻🧜🏻💛🔱🐠🧜🏻♂🧜🏻♂🧜🏻♂🌊💙🐟👗🧜🏻♀🧜🏻♀🧜🏻♀💜🦑🩷💕💖🐚
I didn't understand Meeshell Mermaid from EAH because Ariel already has a daughter Melody, so my thoughts were that Meeshell is her sister
Ever After High is actually not linked to Disney's adaptations
Please do Beauty and the beast next/bell
Beauty and the Beast will be next week!
Ariel is one of my favorite characters of all time because Ariel is a princess. Yet, she takes action and is allowed to be an active hero instead of just waiting to be saved like your typical fairy tale princess character (saving Flounder from a shark, killing Ursula's eels in the climax, and saving Prince Eric). She is just as interesting as she is hot. But, she's also lovable, adorable, and relatable.
You should watch the toei animation one in english, she has such a beautiful voice in english.
