One of the funniest rock 'n' roll stories I've ever heard involves Mountain and Black Sabbath on tour together. On one night, Sabbath couldn't go on stage because Tony Iommi had lost his artificial fingers and couldn't play the guitar; Mountain, however, couldn't fill the entire bill because Leslie had gotten drunk the night before and lost his false teeth, and therefore couldn't sing! Oh, to be a roadie on tour with these holy fools in the '70s!

Mountain was my first concert ever. Saw them at The Academy of Music in NYC, 1971. I was 13 years old. My brother took me on condition I didn’t tell anyone his date stood him up (my luck). We had seats 7th row center. Amazing show. $5.50 a ticket. Driving home over the Brooklyn Bridge in his VW Super Beetle, I could see his lips moving but couldn’t hear anything other than faint ringing in my ears. Was like I was in a silent movie. Loudest band I ever had the pleasure to see live until I saw The Clash at Bonds International Casino in ‘77. Fond memories (as I go slowly deaf at age 64, after more than 250 rock concerts all over the world).

Call us Boomers or anything else that floats your boat. Just remember that we lived and breathed for the waves of great music produced from around 1965 to ‘75. No internet, just free-form FM radio in most cities, plus journals like Creem, Circus, Rolling Stone etc. to help us keep abreast of the vast number of great artists.
BTW, that’s the legendary NYC DJ Murray the K (Kaufman) at the very end during his FM days. He was on WINS 1010 from 1958, playing Top 40 and hosting the Beatles in 1964-65. When WOR FM 98.7 went to a progressive free-form Rock format in 1966, Murray morphed into a laid back style playing non-Top 40 records.

I got to jam with Leslie West at two gigs in NYC. It was awesome!!! He was so coked up and wasted:) lol He actually broke his LP junior and used my SG too. I remember my keyboard player asking if he offered me any coke since he borrowed my guitar. The answer is no... he sure didn't. LOL

The Les Paul Jr. had kind of a cult following, and Leslie West is the reason why. In those days he played a flat-top 2-tone sunburst LP Jr., with a single P-90 pickup and wrap-around bridge. Just a plank and a pickup but he got a huge sound from it. They became very popular for a while, and were cheaper than the LP Std. Still see a lot of them but I don't think many know it's history. It is the Mississippi Queen guitar.

Born in 53. This is one of the sixties - seventies bands propagate the essence of rock and roll brimming with spunk, passion, sensuality and raw emotion. It was an era of genius songwriting, innovative compositions, and musicians who had complete control of their instruments.I enjoy discovering new music, yet returning to the tunes of this era always feels like coming home.

Heavy Metal took whatever was left of rock and roll, and took it in the wrong direction. The kiddies thought metal was rock, and 20 years later we have guitarists like Zakk Wylde, Steve Via, Satriani... Sure they play fast, but where is the Billboard top ten hits? Where is the song that will be played in 40+ years? If rock doesnt slow the hell down, and get the passion back, there will be no more Rock and roll.
