Ray is a really interesting character. He's an angry, greedy scumbag who you're very much inclined to hate, but at the same time he always keeps his promises and never turns on anyone who didn't turn on him first.
I've seen a lot of irredeemable villains and plenty of sympathetic ones, but it's kind of rare to find one that occupies this kind of middle ground.
I agree in my opinion it was a mistake killing him. He is greedy but not a traitor.

Honestly, I’d have liked it if Niko spared Ray, Phil and Faustin...and in return they keep a low profile on Nikos orders until the end when they go with him to take out Dimitri, Pegorino and Bulgarin...and gain from it themselves just by cleaning their hands of this mess...plus it’d motivate them to get out of the criminal life

Pegorino is an idiot. He has little to no evidence of ray ratting him out.
Ray is a authentic mobster it seems his favourite thing are synonymous on the ice they were supposed to hand over to him I am not going to argue with that for the sake of how the game was constructed even though it was like that to take this into consideration.
I always liked how Ray Boccino doesn't go out like a chump. If you manage to get him out of the car he doesn't beg for mercy or go on a rant; he just pulls out a combat shotgun and starts blasting with emotionless, one word responses. "Bye." or "See ya." like he knew the moment was coming.

Part of it has to do with him not having an execution option like the other characters. But it makes it interesting how he doesn't get out of the car whining "I always looked out for you..." or any rants or tirades. It's like he fully expected this was going to happen, or that it was business (knowing Jimmy ordered the hit rather than Niko personally turning on him) and thus resolved to go down fighting rather than begging.
I would've preferred Ray to get out of the car calmly and stay put and say positive things to Niko, be like a gentleman instead. He could've had his hands up and said something like: "It was nice working with ya Nicky."
Considering Ray's temper & the fact he was a high ranked mobster, I couldn't imagine him going out the same way as petty street thugs like Playboy X or Clarence.
Mikhail may have ran, but even he didn't beg for mercy, only tried warning Niko of Dimitri's disloyalty. It was DO OR DIE for Boccino. I wish his death wasn't so anticlimactic tho.

21:09 No Niko, actually Ray paid you really well. You did 6 missions for him and Ray gave you 9000-11000 dollars for each one. He gave you much more money than other bosses like Elizabeta or Vlad for example and he even helped you find Florian.
I love Niko, but never agreed when he said that.
I mean you could make the argument Ray was moving around a bunch of diamonds that Niko had no idea were originally Bulgarin’s. Considering at this point Niko was already being blackmailed by ULP, & hunted by Dimitri & his former debtor from the old country; he needed to charge higher for criminal activity considering the risk he was taking when he had already made a lot of enemies. Or even just something simple like Niko said that out of frustration rather than actually hoping to make more money since he’s been chasing Florian and Darko. Or even simpler like inflation is crazy because rpg rockets cost $5000, & suits from Perseus cost like $2500. Idk it’s just fun to think about headcannon wise. Also Niko’s main goal was to come to America to seek revenge so I can see why he’d be getting frustrated at this point when he’s found nothing and only gotten deeper into trouble.

I felt bad when Niko killed Ray. I actually trust him. He wasn't a rat as I knew of; I never seen him betray anyone, but I saw everyone betray him. So I actually liked Ray. Love his accent too. I also liked Phil, but I didn't like Jimmy that much. Jimmy was the only one in the mob I didn't like, because he always made Niko kill his trusted employees.
I feel like Phil wasn't given much attention in GTA IV.
I know this is an old comment, but I agree. When Jimmy called and gave Niko the orders to kill Ray and Niko seemed like he didn't care I was literally screaming no to my computer. I always felt Ray as loyal, helping out Niko with finding Bernie Crane and he never double-crossed anyone.

Originally, we had to choose between killing Phil or Ray. Truth is, I actually really liked both. Phil is a damn good handyman whose able to handle himself pretty nicely and is one of the few "brothers in arms" Niko has that doesn't end up being his friend. Ray is always mentioned to be greedy but he kept his end of the bargain and never seemed to have betrayed anyone, and if anything, Pegorino himself was a dunce anyway. Compared to the other choices we've had like Dwayne/Playboy X and Francis/Derrick, I think if the feature made it into the game, choosing between either Ray or Phil would have been real tough.
Ya, that would've been a tougher decision allright... I'd probably go saving Phil though. Maybe.

I wish there was an option to spare Ray and Mikhail Faustin in the game, such great characters and didn't want to kill them. Ray might be a little greedy, but he always kept his promises and even helped Niko with finding Florian. And his missions were really fun, like the diamond exchange in the museum
Also Ray may be openly ambitious to become Perogino's(which made him paranoid and even thinking that Ray was a backstabbing Rat) successor but atleast he was not a rat, straight earner, kept his word to those he transact.
Exactly, Pegorino was paranoid because of Anthony's betrayal. Ray also became a threat for Pegorino somewhat, because he was a good earner and grew in terms of influence (making money and gaining power on his own). He could have been a serious rival for Jimmy

@@CroRain7 Johnny Klebitz fucked up(Betraying Ray in the Diamond deal when he took Ray's money costing his close friend Jim getting tortured and whacked) when he betrayed Ray(Ray promised that if the deal went smooth he will split the money 50/50 to him and Klebitz(which in that case was a huge sum of money).
I really didn't wanna kill Ray at all, Rockstar got the Italian Mob feeling on him nailed so so so god damn perfectly without being really cliche, it's actually quite grounded, the typical Italian culture tendencies such as him reproaching anything good that he's done for you, or being 2faced with the guys he dislike (Phill).
He was truly a likeable character and very intrusting, i think Rockstar made a mistake but GTA 4's story is still the greatest.

That is what made the 3 stories so interesting. Certain characters are portrayed differently in the 3 games. In GTA 4 Ray is an ally to Niko but in TLAD he is the second antagonist and responsible for wrecking the Lost clubhouse.

So this guy was basically Martin Madrazo in GTA IV. Both were high ranked officials in organized crime, had anger issues, but never backstabbed and always kept their word.
Ray did technically betrayed Brian, but I mean it's Brian. Any reasonable people would not want to align with him.

If you look at Ray Boccino's clip with him holding his henchman after being killed by Jim and Johnny that show Ray Boccino shown empathy and loyality to those who helps him. He didn't deserve the fate he got from Pegorino.

I really like Ray’s voice actor, I think his acting is great
I really hate that Niko had to kill Ray. At first I thought Ray was gonna be an asshole and in a way, he is but he’s one of the most loyal and truthful characters in GTA IV. He kept his word and helped Niko find the man he was looking for and also paid him well (despite Niko telling him he paid shit) and Ray never betrayed Johnny. It was Johnny who betrayed Ray by being greedy and holding the money for himself, also framing Jim for the theft of the money, leading to his death. Ray was fair in that deal, giving Niko a portion of the money and Johnny the other portion but no he kept it for himself. I also hate how we kill Ray for Pegorino when he ends up dying anyway (either by Niko or Dimitri) so I felt killing Ray was pointless and uncalled for
At least Ray died fighting like a real gangster. It’s the criminal life anyway you can be killed at any point no matter how rich or smart you can be
None of the diamond money was for Niko or he would've been mad about the situation too, but he was nonchalant.

Tbf Johnny giving the money to Jim was a smart move since Jim is the treasurer of the LC Lost MC. Johnny is good with finance but there’s a reason Jim is the friggin treasurer.
And he end up killing Kate just because you didn’t take the damn deal, so I would’ve killed Jimmy too with no hesitation. I wish we could’ve done that at least Nico would’ve had a better ending.
I wish we could have kept Ray alive. He would've made a better boss than Pegorino.

Is it me ... or was GTA 4 so, so much more fun & compelling than 5? Even without the 2 dlc expansions, which were also amazing? Just Niko's story, and getting to experience a new Grand Theft Auto after a 4 year dry spell, and the unique physics engine (which was cheapened in GTA V, I guess to improve the "gameplay," but actually diluted the weight and feel of the whole game), and just how awesome the whole thing is?

What I really like about this, though, is that Rockstar might've set a precedent for themselves for further titles here. GTA San Andreas, the first game in Los Santos, was filled to the brim with cool mechanics, gameplay varieties, stats and much else that made it just incredibly fun to play. The story was pretty damn good, too, though moreso focused on the ever-present satirical aspect of the GTA series, which is especially evident by the fact a lot of the characters were quite gimmicky and one-sided (you've got the conspiracy-driven hippie The Truth, the neo-imperialist Toreno, the expendable pimp Jizzy B, washed up writer Rosenberg, etc etc) - a lot of the main ones still had progression, but it was moreso a means to an end.
GTA IV turned this around a bit by truly doubling-down on the story aspect, and having some legitimate choices that affected the whole setting and narrative (reminder that choices as a determining mechanic was very popular at the time, but this game did it so well). There were a ton of characters here too, but they were less archetypical and had more depth to them - the friendship-mechanic did a lot to expand on specific ones as well. Obviously there were some stereotypes here too, but it wasn't as evident as in SA, since it went for a much different feel; much more gritty, realistic and morally ambiguous. This also meant cutting down on some of the mechanics - I mean, SA and V are just packed so much more with content to do and stats to raise than this one, but I think it worked pretty well to focus more on the narrative.
And yup, the SA-feel returned a lot more in V too. The Los Santos-vibe, which the heaps of mechanics, unique missions and over-the-top societal satire; but this also meant the story had less weight to it, since it needed to fulfill that colourful, varied role. A bit like the actual cities themselves; Los Angeles being filled with glitz & glamour and fake, superficial (though a lot of em!) things to do - while New York is more grey, rainy and mournful.
This could mean, if we return to Liberty City, we might get more of some sweet, juicy, morally ambiguous storytelling filled with choices that are actually interessting and characters that have weight to 'em.
Just my two cents. This ended up being much longer than I envisioned.

The _"Museum Piece"_ cutscene is a masterpiece, possibly the best acted cutscene in the whole game.
People don't realize how scary this guy is, he likes to toy on people who's on his way. When Luca told Niko about the guy Ray threw in the dump truck where the dudes popping bones were heard by everyone is a sign that Ray could potentially be the scariest Mob Boss if he had the power, fortune and influence like what Jon Gravelli has.
If Ray were at the same level like Gravelli, he can take the whole LC and San Andreas. Too bad he's just a puppy of a joke named Jimmy Pegorino.

For someone who’s portrayed as “slimy, greedy, untrustworthy, unloyal,” Ray really isn’t. Hell, when Nico killed Luca & his crew, Ray was perplexed at what Nico did.
Another thing was Ray was willing to give HALF the money to Johnny and the Lost (only for Johnny to double-cross Ray).
Ray even helped Nico out by finding Bernie Crane.
Also, Pegorino really isn’t bright. If the police really are onto them and some of his boys are at jail (43:03 to be exact), wouldn’t that mean some have already turned states.
Didn't Pegorino admit he'd also hire random goons off the street? Hiring lots of outsiders would make it easier for his organization to be infiltrated. 🤷🏻
The one thing I never liked is that when you kill Ray, there's no cutscene or anything, he just dies and you stay in the gameplay with the mission complete music. I mean it makes sense, Niko's just a hired gun after all, but yknow, it's a very quick and forgettable send off to a quite memorable character. One of the very, very few things in GTA IV that actually felt like a bit of a miss
Apparently the mission Pest Control you were supposed to choose to kill either Ray or Phil It was changed probably because Ray became one of the main Antagonists in Lost and damned

Ray Boccino was such a unique character from the GTA franchise. He was an old-school mafia capo that wasn't afraid to help people who helped him. He threw bones to niko, packie, and johnny, and he received a cut of everything they earned. He also had a legitimate business to run his operations from. You can't help but respect him for doing the aforementioned things.

I liked Ray Boccino. He wasn't a traitor, he was arrogant but he was loyal to Niko. When there was a mission where I needed to kill him, I called the police to do it.

I know he's suppose to be greedy, but he really wasn't presented as such, particularly with the diamond deal. He was going to give half of the money to the bikers. That's a lot of money. And then he was going to kick up cash to the boss from his half. Then we can assume that it's possible that Niko would have been paid a bit, but that's just speculation. So he'd technically be making less cash off the deal than what the bikers were getting paid. It was dumb having him get clipped. He was always presented as being a standup gangster, and the only capo of the crew, Phil was just an associate. As others said, he was just unlucky. I think 1 of the actual real scumbags in GTAIV (other than Dimitri of coarse) was Johnny Klebitz. I don't even understand why so many fans like the character. He kept passively stirring up conflict with Ray. It's speculated that Johnny actually setup Billy, because Johnny didn't want to deal with his shit and also wanted to lead the crew as President, which indicates he's a rat. He robbed Ray, even though Ray was going to split the cash 50/50. He got his buddy, Jimmy, clipped because of the conflict he started with the Pegorinios. And all the while he bitches and moans throughout the story how everything is going downhill and unfair, even though all of the conflicts were a result of his actions. And finally when he's briefly introduced in GTAV, he's a complete bitch and meth head.
I liked Johnny, but I see what you're saying. It was shown in TBoGT that Billy tried settin' up Johnny & Jim to get clipped by the Triads which they attempted to, but also turned on Billy so Johnny had nothing to do with his arrest.
As for Johnny rippin' off Ray, that made the outro scene for "Was It Worth It?" a bit irritating as Johnny talks like Ray betrayed him when it was vice versa & Ashley claiming Billy tried to turn Ray against him, unaware that Johnny robbed Ray. From a phone call with Angus, it was apparent they didn't like associating with the mob, but I didn't get why Johnny would cross them, especially when he didn't want war with the Triads. Ray had warned Johnny twice about the money, and he still tried something & thought Ray would take his word over Niko's, whom Ray already knew he could trust.

12227UserName I think other characters called Ray greedy not because of a simple lust for money, but because he was gaining power from his own schemes and was well on track to reaching a position where he'd no longer have any reason to be associated with Jimmy. I have no doubt Ray would have succeeded in leaving Jimmy in the dust if Niko didn't kill him, since Ray's management skills are clearly far better than those of a guy who killed more of his own men than anyone else and trusted Dimitri.

Between Phil and Ray, I think Phil is the least loyal one. After Pegorino's fall, he immediately leaves the family and held no grudges to Niko (in revenge ending) even though he killed him and even calls him that he gotta go.
It's just Pegorino was too paranoid to think that it was Ray because he's angry, selfish and greedy.
