  • Had to make a quick repair to an outdoor wood boiler water jacket. Nights were cold and time was ticking. Got it done!

I wish you would put out more content. I don’t think you realize how unique (in the TH-cam world) what you have put out so far is. You give the viewer a real-life perspective of what a real-life plumber does without needing to draw viewers to your channel with click bait and unnecessary commentary. I have been plumbing my entire life and I really enjoy watching you go through the very same sort of things and situations I have for so long.
While family can sometimes be a pain, knowing they always have a plumber at the ready for them, it is also nice being able to do things like you just did without having to worry about your reputation. Family often gives you the chance to practice things you normally wouldn’t do for a customer and they usually won’t hold you accountable if your “experiment” didn’t work or doesn’t look pretty.
I think your did a good job here, no matter how bad you think it looks. You took care of family, and that’s what matters most. Add to that, you fixed the problem.

I went through this pain twice already this winter, same central boiler. Both left and right walls are made of paper thin chinese metal,I'm actually surprised you didn't blow holes while welding. Tell your uncle to replace that thing this spring,I can promise him many more water leaks in the future with that thing.

I had a boiler given to me with the same issues. Instead of filling it up to test it get a 2" rubber plumbing cap, put a valve stem in it and fill the chamber with air. Test with soapy water. You'll chase holes because the original material is now brittle and doesn't like to be shrunk by heat. I've used jb weld high heat epoxy in areas where very minor leaks have appeared, and it's held up. The owner has to be using boiler additive. Cheaper than me showing up.

Need to add rust inhibitor every season to the boiler water. Mahoning Outdoor Boiled sells it in Pa by the quart and they ship anywhere. I've been heating with my OWB for over 16 years, no issues and in the off season the stack should be removed, hole covered and tarp the top of the unit.

I wish we had seen this last week when our CB 5644 sprung a leak; before immediately making a decision to invest in a whole new stove. Had a guy out to try & weld a 'plug' to it but he couldn't get a hot enough arc to weld through the streaming water. 😖 Ended up draining the system; (so no more pin hole stream in the firebox) but by the two new pin holes had already been created. (By the guy's grinder wheel. trying to clean off the surface.) At that point we just figured no amount of patching/plugging/etc was going to fix a 20 year old boiler... But we were kind of panicked at the time; & hadn't seen this repair idea/strategy. Still it's hard to say how long this type of repair might last; so most likely you're going to end up with a major new investment at some point anyway. Better early in the season, than in mid-February when it's 20 below.

I kept wondering why you were grinding your weld down as if you're trying to make it look good which is an impossibility in that nasty interior. I was never good at welding but the head of the welding department was an expert at TIG welding and I think there's experience that indicates what your welding rod should be temperatures etc to minimize porosity. I'm pretty sure using a better material to patch with would have helped the outcome.

I’m not a welder either, but would it have been better to cut out the 2”x2” and do a butt weld? That way there’s no shelf between the hole and patch.
