Orangeburg Pipe Failure
Called to the job for a kitchen sink that was backing up. Multiple contractors gave various, inconclusive diagnosis' to the problem. We determined the main line was plugged and located the problem. In this video we will attempt to repair the problem while uncovering even more. Orangeburg pipe! This is bituminized fiber pipe made with layers of wood pulp fibers and asbestos fibres compressed and soaked with liquefied coal tar pitch. Talk about old school! In the end we get the job done and complete the repair until such a time as the remaining piping and septic system is replaced. Thanks for watching and enjoy!

Grohe Smart Control Push Button Shower Valve
Was a big thing in the 70s use to see it alot was cheaper than cast iron and lighter beer a plumber for over 50 years 👍
What was added to the lead?
Pretty lucky there with removing all that stuff. Nice real video.
crazy... charge triple 🤣
Would it have been better to use a piece of of new cast iron pipe set inside the old cast iron fitting, instead of PCV? It seems CI is more sturdy and durable for a pipe-to-fitting joint. Then the CI-to-PVC butt joint above can be closed with that no-hub fitting.
I would have used a Coupling to connect the two ends of the PVC instead of the Mission coupling. Other than that NICEEEEE
Outstanding work. NJ plumber here, watching you feels like Deja vu. A lot of similar jobs I do here
What size and type drill bit was used on the exterior brick?
Should probably put far less stress on the plumbing, being way less risky.
thxs
I would like to see you do the repipe!
turn around and as fast as you can out a there....

Another homeowner-adulterated crawl space.
Great craftsmanship, brother! I have to have the same exact thing done to my shower through the front as there is no access panel in the back of the shower. I'm just curious about how much that job costs from an experienced plumber?
My mother had those joints all over in her house. I assume zinc was used. I didn’t realize that oakum was used for the seal. Lasted for 70 years until the house was torn down. Interesting.
Now we know why you used that wye connector.😂❤😅
Outstanding work!
Never mix copper with cast. In fact don't even let a copper water line rest on a cast pipe. I work at a apartment complex that was built in 1975. they used all cast pipe and copper drain lines and copper water lines. Every single water line failure has been due to it resting on a cast main drain. And all cast failures is just due to age and the high chlorine content of the water. I've seen entire stacks fall and break into pieces especially at the lead and okam joints.
My house 1914 has all the original cast drains in it. No leaks?😮😊 It's actually 2 systems one is original one was added in the 50s or 60s the original has lead the added is using some kind of Felt or maybe horse hair? With a Tar substance packed in. I have no idea what they did in the Michigan UP way back when? I'll eventually need to replace it all with PVC when the city finally upgrades the water and sewer. We still have the system installed by the miners that founded the town almost 50% is dormant because homes are gone but the system is still there. Fortunately I do have 1/2" copper water coming in through the basement wall for water I'm not sure if how it's tired into the main? It was done before I purchased the house. The system is actively being replaced now in small zones around town .
Lead wool would be better than hot lead with pvc.
You didn’t pack the lead, not a good joint. A rubber gasket would be better.
I had one where there was so little room to work I finally brought the pipes together, wrapped the area where the met with plastic trash bags and poured cement over the entire area to form what was basically a cement fitting. It was highly temporary too, like this one but the dude and his family could use the toilet again, for a while longer. Orangeburg sucks.
I dislike orangeburg so much, if it were up to me I'd make the manufacturer drink all the liquid inside all of it made. Did I say I dislike the stuff? I like Fernco's with 2 straps and probably would have used a hub to no-hub one for this job, tightening each side independant of the other on each connection. I get it, though. This is highly temporary. But still like throwing good money after bad. I got so sick with mono from dealing with sewer water I had to find a different trade. Good luck.
Great video my guy
Surprised the lead doesn't melt/damage the PVC
Great video tutorial! This reminds me of the plumbing rework I had to do in our new to us home in 1997. Built in 1964, it had been plumbed with copper drain lines; dumping into cast iron bells in the basement. I soon discovered that, while all the vertical copper was intact, the three inch horizontal runs were corroded through on the top in a few places so I replaced all the copper sewer lines with PVC. While you give no information on the house, I would suspect it too may have been originally plumbed in like manner and then updated at some point for probably the same reason; given the copper you found in the cast bell.
Great job !
Wow, it's the 21st century and we still be pourin lead like it's the Roman times.
Caulk adapter?
How about plugging up the drain hole to catch any debris😮
You could have avoided all that work and just used a SV gasket or Indiana seal gasket and lubricant beval the pvc and push in gasket, done.
Yes that takes me back. My grandfather and father were plumbers. We poured lead joints regularly. Dad had a propane burner rig that fitted atop a standard size propane tank. We had a small kettle that housed the led and a ladle that was used for pouring the lead. Dad used to go around to parts stores and filling stations and collect old car batteries. We would cut off the casing and melt down the lead cores for future use. Dad had an oakum belt that he clamped around the joint. We would hammer it into the top edge of the cast iron pipe so that the two ends pinched together on the high side of the joint. You would pour into the vee shaped crack until the joint was full. That was how horizontal joints were made.
Doing alot of service work in an old historic town, we ran in to these occasionally.
I'm impressed. That job deserves combat pay.
I live in Oakland California and I have 4-inch orangeburg pipes that carry water away from my raingutter downspouts to the downhill area of my property. My pipes also ovalized over the 58 years since my home was originally built in 1966. I replaced a few sections of orangeburg drainage pipes and noted that they shatter if hit hard enough with a shovel or a hammer. My interior plumbing was installed with copper pipes and cast iron drain pipes. I've opened a few sections of cast iron over the past decade and the inside is in great shape and should easily last another 100 years, but I suspect it's because my pipes are above ground in my crawl space.
👍 nice. Did you notice while in Poland, did they use propex system there. Just curious.
👍
If you use a bar clamp or something with a fair amount of surface area, after heating the pipe squeeze the pipe as needed to make it round. After it cools it will stay when taking the clamp off. The crack in the tank won't cause any problems. Most these old tanks don't even have sealer around the inlet or outlet pipes. Just dirt holding it in. There's no pressure.
I had the same thought. Take a clamp off a fernco and use it while hot. Leave enough room for the new fernco to go over the end and probably leave the original clamp in place for the few years left before the entire pipe is useless. Orangeburg must have promised improvement over clay or cast iron when it was sold. No one knew it ovaled out, I guess. Or didn't care.
You need to switch to Hulk green clamps.
Good job
Well done. If there's a leak after the installation what adjustments can be made?
good job we don't have SMELLOVISION
The glue us supose ro go on before priner dries. Or so the instructions on the can say
Safety concern: as a 1970's teenager saw a friend with burn pocks all over his face. He was making bullets and his melting lead exploded. I just learned how as you said cold lead was moist and when melting steam was/is produced splattering molten lead on his bare face. 50 years later he still has scars. Lucky he didn't go blind. Great video.
Produced in Orangeburg NY by the Fiber Conduit Company. Hence the name
Good work thanks for sharing👍👍👍👍
Thanks for sharing the video👍this is good content, keep up the great work
