Had same problem with my 2002 Grand Cherokee. Bulb was fin but contacts were pushed in and plastic melted around it. Thanks so much for sharing this fix, saved me some money for sure!!!!

Thank you so much for posting this. This was exactly what was wrong with mine. Of course, there is no recall. Jeep does not care about their customers. I won’t buy another one.

I like how you came up with the spacer. I am 65 and cannot afford to have simple repairs done so I am trying to do it myself.

I've been messing with mine since I bought in 2008,. Have tried everything, even calling Jeep ... This is something I have not tried ... Thank you, the tickets cost are getting rediculously high...

I had the same problem. I tried cutting away the plastic and raising the metal tabs but the brake light still didn't work. I bought a new assembly at O'Reilley Parts for 89 bucks and it worked.

There is no such thing as a "common" circuit on 12v automotive electrical system. It would be a ground. Just some information. Not being a smart ass or know it all. Your video was helpful, thank you.

What causes the overheating is a piece of plastic inside the brake light assembly. It falls onto the bulb. Holds and builds heat. Super glue it at the top.

The foil! That was the key. Also, scrubbing off the melted plastic! Thx

I have a 2000 .. it's the inner ring that heats up from bulb and warps ... This is something that should be recalled, Jeep says there not enough problems to recall...WTH!!!
