  • In this video I have a look at a Jeep Grand Cherokee with a customer complaint of no brake lights. Before you get on me about the repair, remember this is just a winter beater. One more NY winter then it is off to the crusher! -Enjoy!

    I've worked in the auto parts end of the business for many years, and in that time I've met a very few natural diagnosticians... from DIY to independent shop to automotive dealer. They are few and far between, and they are invaluable to their customer base. Eric is a natural diagnostician of the highest order, and his videos are a joy to watch! You can have all of the fancy tools and gadgets they make, but unless you have it between the ears, you are just a parts changer! Kudos, my friend! What you do is a service to all of your fans and subscribers! And Merry Christmas!

    I very much love the fact that you take the time to track down faults, i've seen a lot of mechanics or shops that just run through and the first thing that makes something work again they call it enough.. you go the extra little bit to make sure that that is the actual problem plus take the extra to make sure that everything checks out. . Thanks for bringing us along for the repair .

    Ah, the legendary TIPM.
    I ran into a TIPM not too long ago on a Liberty. The customer stated that somethings wrong with my headlights, i think it's the Master Switch because when switch is activated the brights just flash/flicker and do not stay on."
    At first I was in agreement that it did sound like a switch and when I tried it initially, it did seem like that could be the case. However it's more I played with it I realized there was a sequence to how the lights flashed. When switch activated, lights with flash on off on off. Activate switch; on off on off. Switch one time, flash twice. I began thinking it sounds like a relay to me. Anyway our very special Service Manger didn't want to "waste any more time on this" and so he ordered a Multifunction Switch. I cringed and shook my head.
    Long Story Short: I didn't get paid for my diag, nor did I get paid to R&R.... NOR did I get paid to remove and put back in the old but not broken MFS. 😑
    ...... Then our service Director wonders why I (and many other people) have a difficult time getting along with this service manager and two flag Techs just resigned.

    It seems like you could save yourself some time and aggravation if you mounted angled mirrors on your garage doors and your front wall so that you could see all the front and rear lights on a vehicle while you were sitting in the driver's seat. If I can think that; you can think that.

    • @throttlebottle5906

      @KECOG 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Why not just use the reflection off of the doors? I use that to check my own lights, near a wall, for instance. Not as accurate, but you can see if they come on. No money spent that way.

    • @throttlebottle5906
      @throttlebottle5906 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      i try the reflection here and it's plain hard to see all the various lights and generally the rear of vehicle isn't but 3' off a white door, mirrors would be "the cats meow" and "the bee's knees"

    I would have thought you could also look in the cruise control section for brake switch activation yay/nay...
    I went thru the same issue on our 06 T&C. When we first got it a few years ago, it had a couple of things that didn’t work. Went to the fuse box right off the hop and quickly found a fuse that had a corroded off leg. Luckily it was just the one side, and I was able to take a pick tool and get the corroded off piece out and clean up the terminals. I gave it a generous treatment with dielectric grease and replaced the fuse. Been good ever since! While I was in there, I pulled all the fuses and relays and gave ‘em all the same clean and grease treatment.

    I saw that loose fuse and yelled "there's your problem, lady" (inaudibly) before you did! ...but then, you didn't :( Nice simple fix. Well done. Nothing rustin' down here in Houston.

    Good video Eric. I admit that I jumped on the brake light switch right away and would have been wrong. If you had a paint marker you could have put a 27 on the fuse holder to ID it. Please follow up with a picture of Mrs. O's reindeer when they are finished. That is the kind of stuff that my wife would like to see. Happy Holidays

    Did a "external relay" on a seabring a few months ago. The gentleman had replaced the transmission, Then the solenoids every single one of them. The wiring harness and a few different sensors. Was just broken wire inside fuse box for "limp mode" relay.

    Thoughts on just moving the brake light wire to an empty fuse slot in the fuse box? Save the external fuse holder and just move fuse slot 29 or whatever it was to an empty slot? Would look factory too and then just relabel the diagram.

    Vanessa and my wife would get along great. She's always building something! She usually makes little ornaments to give to her customers at the salon for Christmas. I got roped into cutting about 200 little shapes of fabric one year. Didn't take much brain power, so I watched TH-cam while cutting. 😁
    No shame in that fix, Eric. The way I look at it, as long as the customer is fine with it, and it's labeled, I see no problem in making your own fused circuit. I do this ALOT! It's easier for me, and I get the vehicle out of here faster, AND it's cheaper/faster for the customer too. A win-win. I use white duct tape and a sharpie to label the circuit close to the box. Just did one this summer on that '07 GMC Sierra you may or may not remember - I was asking you a million questions about why I had no comm to the FSCM - it ended up being the ABS module, exactly like you said, since the comm lines pass through the ABS unit on their way to the FSCM as you explained. Anyway, this one had an open between the ABS 1 fuse and the ABS unit, so I tapped into the external buss there, and installed a 40A J-case fuse to power it (wired from the factory to power trailer brakes), ran it down to the module, hiding the wire in the loom where I could, and securing it where I couldn't - when I installed the new ABS module, everything worked as designed, and the red brake light went out, so the guy could get a sticker. That was his only concern. I couldn't make the ABS light go out, since I didn't have a way to "initialize" the new ABS module (unless I missed the correct window in the Autel ..). Local shop couldn't do it either, so I didn't feel so bad! Stupid GM and their damn programming! Other than that, the truck was fixed. Thanks again for that, btw. 👍👍

    'Yeah, its got a bad fuse box...'
    Eric,
    Great video and repair - thank you! I think the repair you did was fine for that vehicle. If you had a 'spare' fuse box kicking around perhaps you could have replaced just the terminals and been able to leave the fuse in the stock location. Im assuming you looked into the CHMSL that was out - bad bulb or ?

    God bless

    good fix eric ! I once had to do something like that on a broke terminal on an old dodge alternator wire . Dealer wanted to replace whole wiring harness. Old mechanic said find the right color wire inside the harness , cut the wire up stream and make my own bypass wire , $1.00 fix ! Still working fine 20 plus years later . Thanks for what you do , I always learn something from your videos. How is the new plow working out on your truck and driveway out in the country ?
