Yo Dude! Some people are just SMART! I'm 71 and have a lot of experience BUT YOU my friend saved me a lot of heartache and money! I have a Voyager that had the same issue NO BREAK lights? Your video FIXED IT!! I dislike taking my cars to a repair shop and paying LARGE amounts of money for very little help. I was a mechanic in the Corp. worked on JEEPS so I'm not a dummy but was not prepared for this at all. ?? BENT PLASTIC??? who would have thought? THANKS VERY MUCH YOU ARE THE BEST. So is TH-cam.. stay safe and LIVE LONG AND PROSPER.

Thanks David. I'm glad that fixed your problem. Not always that easy to narrow down, sometimes I can't get power down to the light and that can be fun to run down.

I AM a technician and hadn't seen this concern before. Thanks for the detailed instruction. The housing, at least for me, wasn't warped. It was broken. Even when I knew where to look I couldn't see the crack. The plastic separated into two pieces causing poor contact. The plastic supports the brass contact so I adjusted the contact rather than the plastic. Both heating the plastic and bending the contact are temporary fixes and will likely happen again. At least now we know what we can do until they fully break.

It made since what you said about the light bulbs getting very hot and in an enclosed area like the housing it no wonder more issues like this don't happen. I did check the terminals inside the housing and sure enough one terminal was lower than the rest and when I bent it up just a little enough to see and put the bulb back in the socket it worked again. Thanks for your video here. I have a 1996 Dodge Grand Caravan that this worked on. The back light housing was similar to your jeep. The repair shop agreed with me that it was not the brake switch at the pedal since the 3rd middle brake light worked fine.

@@57bagre as it turned out, one of the 1156 bulb contacts had fused with the socket. Which I picked apart with my pocketknife, scraped rusty insides real good after spraying with WD40 and put in new bulb (other 2 bulbs were good). Bam! All three lit up! I'd been told bulbs had been changed but it didn't work. Judging from the amount of caked on dirt in the casing I guess it hadn't been touched since 1989. Thanks again for the video, it gave me confidence to disassemble and fix.

I've been thru several replacing the whole light piece on both sides ... Even raising the prongs .. yet the same problem persist, may work til few bumps and when headlights are on there's no lights other then blinkers work in back ... I'm pissed Jeep is aware of this yet says not enough to recall...thanks fir sharing your fix, it's one I have not tried yet...

Ya i noticed that same tail light on my jeep is started warping too I got solid running lights and blinkers backups lights but brack circuit pin isn't making full contact due to warping so I am still driving it while my mechanic orders a salvaged taillight assembly to try and fix this issue because when I fixed it myself a month ago it worked fine then the Temps over here exceeded well beyond 110 degrees caused damage to the bulb assembly plug pins and the taillight assembly caused brittleness and I don't wanna bend it because it might break so I'll wait til he gets the parts and troubleshoot it for me again he tried once with current assembly and it appears it went back to not lighting up when I hit breaks. So waiting on other assembly in mean time.

Great video and tutorial. It helped out a lot seeing how you tested the electrical connections.
My assembly was slightly warped so I tried bending silver ground tab up first. When that did not work I swapped out the upper bulb socket with the lower one and it turned out to be a bad socket.

Thanks for posting this video! This exact problem has cost me so many light sockets that I purchased that I have lost count! it's one of the most annoying problems with these Jeeps. Credit has to go to the idiot Designer and engineering team who came up with this rotten design in the 1st place where there is no allocation for heat which causes the contacts on the Tail Light Circuit board (base) soften!! The incredibly then and soft material of the circuit board itself is problem which pushed the contacts embedded in it, away from the contacts on the Light socket.
In 2016 I also Tail Lamp Circuit Board which you can find on Amazon! Driver side is now started failing again! It's a constant reminder why that I am not driving a Toyota. And if all this was not annoying enough, there is a FUSE that controls the Break Lights that could cause ALL of them to fail.

If you look at the socket in ALL newer Chrysler/Dodge/Jeep products since 1998, you will see the plastic has turned brown indicating high heat for long periods of time. On parking lights, that is unacceptable. I suggest using LEDs instead of bulbs to cool the housing and socket down so the plastic doesn't turn brown, or warp, or get brittle.

What a pain in the ass these tail lights are for the GC. I bought two brand new tail lights because my driver side tail light was failing on the break. I put both new tail lights in and it's the reverse effect. The break light works but the normal setting for the same bulb doesn't. I cross cross them and it's all sorts of combo of light shortages.
