And now im in the phase that im having conversations with native spanish speakers thru a language learning chat app "tandem". I learn new vocabulary everytime, open up my translator, and i always remember what you taught me especially the chart. Thank you so much
By the way, there are other countries that use 'vos' too. We use it in Central America and there pockets in Mexico and other countries in South America (besides the ones that were mentioned in the video) that use it too. It's a shame that books include 'vosotros' but not 'vos' when there are a lot more speakers that use 'vos' and not 'vosotros'.
Thank you for this Dr Danny. I'm learning Spanish because I've moved to Argentina. Doesn't stop me learning thru your lessons though as even though they use vos y sos here they always understand me when I ''slip up'' & use eres instead of sos or tú instead of vos or puedes or tienes instead of podés or tenés. Yeah, good video! I learned both tuteo and voseo. So I lived and stayed in many Central South American countries. I have spent extensive time time in Medellin, Colombia, different cities in Costa Rica, Quito, Ecuador, and both León and Managua, Nicaragua ...... With currently living in Managua. In most of those there is a good mix tuteo and voseo that happens that the same time. The exception is Quito: voseo is mostly spoken between family members. I have switched to using voseo and usted in the 2nd person for the most part. I still know how to use tuteo when need be, but I still say vos instead of tú only because I am use to it.

In Chile we use both tú and vos in daily conversations, but we conjugate both the same way as vosotros (which we don' t use, only "ustedes"), so tú eres becomes tú sois or vos sois, estabas = estabais and so on.

Are you saying that, in places where voseo is the norm, in situations where we are NOT speaking in simple present tense or a command form that we would always use “tú”? Or do you mean that the speaker would still use, “vos” for the pronoun (if voicing the pronoun) but would conjugate the verb in line with “tú”?

Y'all living in the southern part of the United States as well as in Spain still remember or have reinvented this second person plural idea which has been lost in most of the American World both north and south america. I am just now start starting to learn Klingon as well as Latin on duo lingo. Well thanks for another great video Dr. Evan's. As you increase your coverage of all the romance languages I hope you might someday talk a little bit about classical Latin in the context of how these other romance languages evolved from it.

Actually, "vos" is the archaic way of formal "you". It's used in the whole of Central America, except Panamá, northern Colombian, Argentina, Southern Peru, sometimes in Chile, and of course, Paraguay and Uruguay.
great lesson as always Danny. you should do a video on spanish phrases which have a different word order to english. When speaking or writing I've noticed some things we say in english sound weird translated into spanish like for example "let me tell you about it." The "about it" part has never seemed right to me.
Actually vos is vosotros minus I, remove the I from áis and éis and then you have the vos form. (historically vos used to used just like vosotros to address two or more people that's why they share the same conjugation) Example Vosotros habláis -> vos hablás Vosotros sois -> vos sos

No, just see, you can understand it by using both forms just putting the accent, when you want to give a command you can think in the Tu conjugated form for it, and that Tu Imperativo form sounds, the most of times, exactly the same as Usted conjugation present form. For example: " (Tu) *habla* por favor y dime que pasó " ( please say something (talk) and tell me what did happen ) " perdón, no puedo escuchar bien cuando Usted me *habla* ( excuse me, i can't hear clearly when you *talk* me ) as you can see both forms are writen and pronounced the same way just that the context is differents in both of they this is actually confusing, i'm not sure if you did understand what i said

I would like to make a comment. In Spanish is wrong to mix voseo (the use of vos) with tuteo( the use of tú) There are rules for that. We can not say "vos piensas" or "vos eres". It is black and white: it has to be vos pensás,vos sos etc .In some parts of Latin America people make that mistake. On the other hand,in some parts of the Caribbean people make another mistake,they mix tuteo with usteo (the use of usted) For instance they say "tú sabe" when the correct way is " tú sabes" or "usted sabe".
A word of advice to gringos from a native Spanish speaker from a country that uses 'vos': stick to standard Spanish and to 'Usted' and 'tu'. Great. You know how to conjugate 'vos'. But do you know its social context and when and with whom to use it? Again, gringos should stick to the two standard second person singular pronouns, 'Usted' and 'tu'. A language is a communication medium that lives embedded in a social context.

You are correct in certain parts. In many countries, they do in fact pronounce the v as v, rather than B. It depends on where you are.

What about the negative form? I would assume you just do the same as the tú negative form. For example: no hablés

In Bolivia, we use them "vos" too, but we don't change the verb conjugation form (vos eres, vos escribes, etc.)

Si lo pensás bien, no es arcaico, sino "de origen arcaico", pues hoy en día se usa en muchos países como el mío.
