I just found your website and was impressed by the wealth of knowledge and the fast, cut to the chase presentation. Well done and I am a new subscriber. I am an ocean sailor and sail single handed or with very small crews. The biggest issue with this approach to sailing in this manner is lack of sleep during heavy weather. Fatigue can lead to poor decision making which can lead to breakages or much worse in such an unforgiving environment. I have been using l-theanine for years without negative side effects and allows me to get much needed sleep during inclement conditions. If I need to get up because the boat needs attention, I have no problem with the mental or physical demands which in some cases may require immediate physical and mental concentration. L-theamine has been a game changer for me. Again, thanks for the great content.

Asperger with childhood trauma, having a PTSD diagnosis. I've been doing supplements for years, but only started L-theanine a week ago. For my whole life, I haven't been able to get into bed in time at night and sleep in any pattern known to man. Two weeks ago I was on a stint with going to sleep around 6 in the morning, sleeping to around 5 in the afternoon. Since L-theanine I'm sleepy early in the evening with a new sleep pattern of going to bed at 7-9 in the evening, waking up at 5-6 in the morning. I've never done this, and I'm going on 60.
I've always been worried and have had belly aches due to nervousness and stress. That is totally gone as well since taking theanine.

Hey, I think try taking the lower dose, 50 mg. If its a pill, you can open it and consume the half, this way it won't increase your anxiety much in case that's how L theanine is going to affect you. Once you pass 1 hour and you feel okay, take the other half. I believe you'll feel the difference with 100mg already. I advise to do it in the morning on a weekend or a day where you don't have any commitments so that you can be free to handle and fully focus on the new feeling. Once you've understood how L theanine affects you, you can take the full 100mg the next day. If it feels good, but not enough, it's safe to go to 200 mg. For me I would take the just enough dose without the need to increase.

L-thearnine has had a pretty profound effect on me. I can also say it's unlike any anti-anxiety medication I've ever tried, and gave up on it years ago as I didn't think it was doing anything. L-thearnine really doesn't make you feel significantly different, it just seems to take the edge off. Things that would normally set me off or get my mind racing, just don't seem to happen to the same degree. It does not completely obliterate anxiety, nor would I really want it to. When I take something like Xanax, I can sometimes get manic or overly friendly, and it throws off my coordination enough I would not want to be running machinery, etc. I do like the way it makes me feel, but I never take it more than a day. The next day I feel pretty wiped out. My normal does is only .25 mg. That's half of the smallest pill size.
L-thearnine is very different. If anything it actually helps me to concentrate more, and I have no problem operating machinery. I typically get up about 5 AM and I take my first 200 mg dose. Then typically after lunch I will take a second. If I don't, somewhere around 3 o'clock or so I can definitely feel the anxiety coming back. That second dose than last until 5 AM. I find it helps me to sleep much better. I still wake up, but when I do I can typically fall right back asleep. My mind doesn't start racing and going off on tangents. It's amazing what a lack of sleep can do to you.
I do have some chewable Kava candies I buy off of Amazon, which are 50 mg. These also contain passionflower and chamomile. If I'm having any trouble falling back asleep one of these will do the trick. If I'm really wound up I might take one of the candies before bed. I like this dose size.
The one disadvantage to L-thearnine is it really does nothing for muscle tension. Benzodiazepines work wonderful on cramps and muscle tension, but L-thearnine pretty much has no effect on that I've noticed. I still have to take Advil, Aleve, etc for muscular tension.
One other herb I will sometimes bring into the mix is Ashwaganda. I like the calming effects of Ashwaganda, and that certainly can be felt more than L-thearnine. I believe it works on cortisol levels whereas L-thearnine does not. It seems to me that cortisol is what's partially responsible for muscle tension. It puts you in that fight or flight mode and muscles tighten up. So to put another way L-thearnine works on part of anxiety effects, but not all of them.
And since this video is more about L-thearnine, I won't talk too much more about ashwaganda, but it can also affect your thyroid function and increased testosterone levels. I think it definitely has a place alongside of L-thearnine though.
And I did try Xanax (only .25 mg) with L-thearnine. There's really not a lot of info about mixing benzos with L-thearnine. I did not feel as though the effects were cumulative. Benzos do make me bluntly honest though, so this is one very noticeable difference. I don't always like what I say when I'm taking benzos!
The one thing worth mentioning though is when the Xanax wore off, I was down for the count. Extreme tiredness and very lethargic. I would not want to be out driving or out in public. I just felt totally drained and out of it. This was a one-time test, so hardly indicative of what might happen to you or even to me if I did it a second time.
And as far as my mental state I would say that I have generalized anxiety disorder, and then event panic attacks. For example, something like flying on an international flight and being cooped up for 20 hours will cause a pretty extreme panic for me. Day-to-day stuff not so much, but I do tend to overthink and over analyze things in general.
I suspect my comments here are a good example of that! LOL.

I have never taken L-Theanin, but wonder if i should.
Because Ashwaghanda makes me sedated. But this makes totally sense because ashwaghand ais also known as sleepberrie! I would recommend it to people who need to shut off in the evening.
And even then idk if it would work..because to me..yes, it made me sedated but my thoughts still kept comming d gowing or should i rather say circling?!
And all of this even though my cortisol is high and it allegedly lowers it...
      strange.
But then again, idk if L-theanin would hlp, if its not lowering cortisol.
IDK whats could help me its paradox.

Love this information, it was explained in terms I could understand and answered my questions I had about Theanine. I am 61, not on any meds, I do struggle with falling asleep over this past year and staying asleep, herbal tea's and supplements help my body relax, but my brain activity keeps going. 😖 My motivation and creativity has been wanning for a couple years, I need to push myself to get things done. My brain feels so tired sometimes, like I could sleep for a thousand years...😴 I'm socially inhibited, but I manage. 😚 I couldn't do it without God's help. 🙏 I am hopeful about trying this amino acid. I am on my way to my local 'family owned', vitamin shop. I'll check back in and give an update. Meanwhile: no vax, no mask, no test and no fear! Faith over fear.

Knowledge over faith and fear makes more sense to me.
I lost my trust in the cov vax by studying facts (that are being suppressed by the gov, and pharma industry).
I found a daily high dose of vit D3 (5000IU) and vit K2 and Zink and Magnesium are probably more beneficial.
Beside not being over weight and eating healthy, no fast food. In my case vegetarian.

Although obviously I can't rule out placebo effect, when I was coming off the benzos I took L-theanine, CBD and valerian root and I believe it made the withdrawal more manageble. Lifting weights to tire you out, slow taper, eating clean and suplements helped a lot. The L-theanine even now, i still take it some times an hour before i sleep and I have noticed that when I take it I wake up far fewer times a night. Coming off the benzos I couldnt sleep at all, after a couple months I could sleep a bit bitter but waking up 5 times a night, now I am down to waking up maybe once or twice. Benzos are evil shit man. This video was really informative. I had heard about the cognitive and mood benefits of ashwaghanda, but also heard that people can develop a tolerance if they take it continuously. It was suggested that L-Theanine could offer some similar cognitive benefits, and cycling between the two could be a way to avoid developing such a tolerance. In your video, @5:36, you mention that large randomized control studies are needed to establish the validity of the benefit claims, but do you think such studies will ever happen? Since it's a natural substance, it can't be patented, so manufacturers can't get huge profits off of it, so it wouldn't be surprising if no one wants to invest the time and money into doing such a study. What do you think? Do you think the FDA should prevent supplement companies from selling supplements that DON'T have studies showing their effectiveness? Some people who are against supplements say people are paying for things that might not have any benefit at all. (Personally, I'm pro-supplement, but I'd be curious to hear your opinion). Thanks again for the info-packed video! (And sorry if my question ended being a bit off topic)

A short update. I stopped taking L-Theanine and am now taking L-Tyrosine basically everyday, and ashwaghanda just some days (i.e. weekdays). For unrelated reasons I am also taking a Chinese herb available in Japan called 補中益気湯 (Hochū-ekki-tō) which Wikipedia's English page tells me is "Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang". Each of these is (among other things) supposed to help with energy and fatigue. With my n=1 "experiment" it is impossible to say what is responsible for the effects but I generally feel quite good since making these changes, and therefore I am not inclined to go back to taking L-Theanine. Thanks again for making such informative videos.

Amazing feedback and pertinent issues were discussed at the crux of why some professionals believe that we have slowed down clinical research progression due to cost. It’s a reality, so thank you for this question. I like to think that more studies will eventually be established. As far as regulation of supplements, currently we see most of them regulated as food and not medicine. For understandable reasons. People should always have the choice to make their own decisions with the help of their primary care physician. Anecdotal evidence is still anecdotal but just because it is so, doesn’t mean it should be banned or not funded. But that’s just my insight. 🙂

      @DutchmanAmsterdam ปีที่แล้ว +3

I would think you should try it. You may not get increased tinitus or it may reduce over time. If it's too much, at least you tried, I don't think it has permanent effect on tinnitus right? Try to find out more about it, you may be worried about nothing.
Also you could see if changing the dosage helps.

I would like to know more ideas on stopping smoking, I've done everything with no luck. I've also heard of benefits from micro dosing of psylocibin mushrooms if ever legalized.

Works great for focus problems. Caffeine + l theanine basically feels like a Adderall

What I don't understand is that the nature of caffeine and theanine is opposite, one is stimulant and other induces relaxation. You mentioned the interaction of the two kinds of medicines in the end part of the video but in the middle of the video you mentioned for cognitive function, combination of caffeine and theanine is used. Rightly so, as there are many supplements with this combination in the market. But again, why don't caffeine and theanine interact adversely with each other, as their effects are opposite? Thanks.

sometimes i will pair this with a little coffee, and it almost becomes like a psychedelic.

Very interesting. I take half a Catapress, a blood pressure tablet, for nightmares. I have had these since childhood along with sleep paralysis. The tablets work for the nightmares, but I don’t have high blood pressure, so I keep taking them.
Could L-theanine help me? If so when is the best time to take it?

I get really bad headaches when taking l-theanine. Completely overweighing the positive effects.
