      What an amazing gesture by Mark. Just knowing they will have a more natural experience, and being able to contribute to the breeding of such a cool species were enough for him to do it. That's someone who truly cares about reptiles right there. Gotta appreciate it. Good luck Dyyan with acclimating them which shouldn't be an issue for you with your great setups and the fact that they've been together and look super healthy should make it happen almost immediately. Keep doing it man!!

    Question of the day: When I was first starting out breeding tree frogs I had these tiny froglets and some of them refused to eat the fruit flies. I went into a petsmart hoping that they had something small enough for them and an employe said that they only had small crickets (nearly the size of the frogs) but after he heard the situation he spent the next half hour looking through the small crickets and picking out a total 12 individual pinheads out of the hundreds of smalls that had been mixed in by mistake. Those pinheads gave the frogs the boost they needed until I could get them on fruit flies.

    Awesome act of kindness... I do actually have an act of kindness... I took care of my friends bearded dragon for about 4 months after she (the owner) was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer until she was able to be comfortable caring for him again... I wouldn't mind receiving some crocodile skinks that's an awesome viewer...

    I put a wanted post on a freebie website and got a reply, it turned out to be our next door neighbour. I was asking for an aquarium tank and they ended up giving us 2 tanks and full set ups including filters, heaters, gravel, decorations, treatments plus tons and tons of help and advice. Thanks to them doing that for us I have found my love for baking again as I've been baking for them and their kids as a way to thank them.

    Protip that saves money, too - skip the bacterial additives and just squeeze out the sponge from another tank with a water feature into the new tank's water. Or even do both but that sponge sludge is going to do a lot more than anything from a bottle.

    • @TenderLove-ChickenTender
      @TenderLove-ChickenTender 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I totally agree, but considering 80-90% of his tanks have wild caught animals I can see how he would want to keep the bacteria from each tank contained.
      I might be wrong but the good and bad could be transferred over. Better safe than sorry.

    • @eros5556

      @@TenderLove-ChickenTender great point

    • @gbhil-yo
      @gbhil-yo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@TenderLove-ChickenTender You're right in theory. But without adequate food (as in living in filter media versus living in the gut of a live host) bacteria have a very short lifespan and are unable to reproduce in great enough numbers to be "shed" from said filter media.
      In an ideal world, every keeper of exotic animals would autoclave things like forceps before using them between tanks and use UV sterilization to combat waterborne organisms, but most people do what is "good enough" versus what is perfect.

    Add isopods and sprintailsto the terrarium side.Also add lots of leaf litter. Catappa leaves work well as do aldrwe cones.Catappa leaves are also known as Indian Almond leaves. Their ttannins released into water have many beneficial properties, such as; antiseptic, anto viral, antifungal, anto(bad) bacterial, and anti external parasites.

    I've been searching for a vivarium companion for a bit. I don't have the space or resources or time for a puppy, and I came across this reptile on Petco. They didn't have them in stock there but they intruiged my curiosity. I'm also sold on the idea of getting one - or two! I'm still trying to adjust myself to the reptilian skin textures; as much as I love reptiles, I'm ADHD and my hands are very sensitive so textures are a big thing for me. I do like that they prefer to NOT be handled. I think it could be a great experience. Thanks for the videos! I think you're one of the only people on TH-cam that constantly posts about these little critters.

    I've had several situations where people give me gorgeous animals because they feel I'd provide them with an incredible life. My best example of generosity was when someone reached out saying they heard I wanted a gray banded king snake and I could have theirs enclosure and all. I still have her and she's a beautiful snake.

    Will keep a long story short … i started making enclosures for my daughters tarantulas. We designed them and CNC laser cut them out of acrylic. We are new to tarantulas and ended up taking a couple to and expo in Manchester, NH. We wanted advice and ended up getting some great advice from Kelly at KF Invertebrates and the folks at Arachnoiden. Both gentlemen gave us great deals with Kelly actually trading an enclosure for some versicolor slings. He liked them so much that Later her even bought a ton of them to sell. Both great guys and helped to inspire a young enthusiast.

    Thank you for sharing a part of your magic land with us!
    As for today’s question, yes . A friend of mine had given a pair of iguanas to her son when he turned 12. He loved them for two years, then completely lost interest.
    The poor things had outgrown their enclosure, and the boy stopped handling them altogether. Even feeding was like feeding fish. Just toss it in there. It was filthy.
    I knew nothing about iguanas . Heating rock? Basking light? They eat insects, ewww. Bought a 20 gallon tank. They could turn around in it, barely. No enrichment. Just a clean paper towel floor cover, daily. Put the tank by a sunlit window. Fed it vegetable scraps.
    Did I rescue them??? I swear I thought I was doing right by them. They had wicked tails. A couple months of this sterile environment, I met one of the parents at a PTA meeting, she loved reptiles and frequently brought them to the class. she was in tears hearing about my pair. She came and picked them up same day. Looking back, I understand the urgency in her tone. I felt like I was a monster. I thought they looked great, she gave me a quick class on iguanas. Then I noticed all she was saying. They never shed properly, didn’t move around much .
    She gave them a proper habitat, and diet. Eventually they got tame again, and she was able to use them in her school visits. I named them Brad Pit and Princes Diana. They were so ugly, the needed a little help on the attractiveness
    The internet has opened up so many reptile hobbies . I know so much more now, every chance I get, I inform people that reptiles need so much more than just love.

    I think one of the best gifts a keeper can receive is a good, large enclosure. Over the years, I've given away many of enclosures that I was no longer using to those entering the hobby or who were expanding their collections. When I get some more space, I am going to get some really nice ones from a friend. I'm happy to have such good, generous friends.

    I've had people message me that they knew I give my animals wonderful care. When someone they knew couldn't take care of her yellow belly slider and said she knew exactly who to call. Of course I said yes and was getting everything together for her but it was her total enclosure and everything needed for her. A few months later she was moving to California and found out it was against the law to have ferrets there so she asked me to take them, once again I said yes and it was the pair, the cage(4 levels) , food meds, potty pads, blankets, beds and tobs of toys plus many other dietary and hygiene items. Got a pair of red eyed crocodile skinks a little over a month ago. They are doing fine but I made their paludarium the same way you made the paludariums in the red-eyed crocodile skink enclosure tutorial video but I am having issue keeping the substrate out of the water due to their digging. I have made other paludariums in the past that are doing fine but none of the creatures in there like to dig that much other than the crabs so I have never had to deal with this issue

      Hey! I think one thing that helps that I had to adjust was opening the filter and lining the intake with filter floss to proxy the pump :). Also, a lot of that debree will just settle in the bottom of the water area and should be okay till water change time :). You can also build a barrier with the terrarium putty if you went as far as to make and use that too. Hope that helps friend! ☺️👍🏼

I reached out to my local community to learn how to make things even better and to ask if someone had some nice tarantula I could buy... And one fellow hobbyist gifted me 3 slings of psalmopoeus irminia :) I was really happy and I fell in love with the genus. I kept them for quite some time, one died as a male but I really don't know why, second died as a mature male and the third one is a big beautiful female I treasure :)

    I’m relatively new in the hobby but I’ve been having an issue that all my tarantulas are sexing as males, and as we all know, males just don’t live as long as females so it was upsetting to know more than half of my collection is just going to die after a few years. I contacted a big seller for a special rare expensive species and I told him my concern for it to turn male with my luck, and I’ll have yet another expensive male die on me. He said he couldn’t really sex it since he’d have to charge me a female price which I understood and said I just hope the odds are in my favor then. Lord and behold I inboxed the spider and it was female. I don’t know if he did that on purpose but I can’t help but feel he did :)

    Can you please make a video where you describe, the most important things about owning crocodile skinks? For example light/heat, food, vitamins etc?

    I was given a Ornate Box Turtle. I named her Ruby. I don't know how old she is but she heavier than the 1 year old Hermans tortoise. I'm really happy to have a box turtle.

    Awesome gifts! Wow they’re the coolest! I have a Ball Python, Indonesian Blue Tongue Skink, and most recently two Butterfly Agama Lizards. The later require very low humidity and warm deep sand, no spritzing even. Safe cactus and succulents are sustainable.
    That setup is awesome! I might have to add the Red Eyed Crocodile Skinks to my possible list. I keep about 70 salt and fresh water aquariums, so their habitat is very familiar to me.
    I love sharing with other hobbyists more than receiving gifts. However being trusted with someone’s pet is a special honor.
    Thanks again.

    When Internet forum-based communities were still a thing, my actual first reptile, a crested gecko, was a gift from a member of said community. Also, what is a normal weight for those skinks? My male crested gecko is 50 g for example, and there are even larger ones. A leopard gecko can go even higher. Those animals that can be larger than the two aforementioned ones, how much do they weigh?

    Hey Reptiliatus! My girlfriend and I are new crocodile skink owners and have a breeding pair. We've set up underground cameras to monitor their behaviour and have some very interesting interactions we would love to share with you! How can we get in touch to share some of the awesome footage we have of our skinks secret lives??
