I always appreciate these sorts of videos that involve more of the maintenance side of keeping exotics. Unboxing and enclosure builds are exciting to view but I imagine get people into the hobby who aren't as prepared for the regular upkeep because those videos make up a majority of content.
This is a video I really wanted to make because I want my viewers to learn about the importance of providing your reptiles will fresh water and the importance of regularly cleaning water dishes and how to clean them properly! I hope you all enjoy the video and learn something new! Don't forget to answer today's question of the day!
Hey there, I just wanted to let you know that your social media links seem to be broken. I was able to find you on those socials by searching your name, but clicking the links directly take me to invalid pages.
I clean my dishes every day!! I have like 30 reptiles but I have a lot of spare time so it doesn’t hurt me at all to clean the dishes every day and in my opinion it’s a little bit healthier for them.
Your enclosures are incredible and all your critters are so beautiful, happy and healthy. I don’t know which I like best..love ‘‘em all 🥰 The turtles and Sabzi are standouts for me but then so is that glorious garter snake. Speaking of garters are you planning on maybe getting her a roommate or 2? I’ve heard that GSs do better with company. Of course that could lead to little garter snakes suddenly appearing in the enclosure from time to time unless all her friends are girls 😂. I had garter snakes years ago in a small group and they were so much fun to feed! Sometimes they got to go “fishing” in their water bowl. And I had a litter of babies once or twice🙂😎Anyhow, your videos are all so fascinating to watch, and I look forward to them. Am also watching your older videos since I’m a relatively new subscriber.
Basil looks so curious, I expect him to tame up soon in your capable care Dayyan, QOTD: I too change water dishes every second day, beardies don’t mess with them too much, just to drink from them. I do love that the leaf turtles love their water so much, it’d be my honour to change out their dish every day if they enjoy it that much 😍
Thanks so much! I’m happy he is behaving more comfortably lately! Slow and steady wins the race! 😅🦎✨ Thanks for sharing your routine! Sounds like your beardies are happy! Haha believe me, it’s an honour the first two times and after that it becomes a selfless/cute chore 😉👀🐢
Thanks for this reminder to deep clean my dishes 🌸 I usually change out the water every day and rinse the dishes with water. Every other week I do a deep clean by soaking them in vinegar, then washing them with dish soap and rinsing them with water.
I also have Exo-Terra water dishes. Though now most of my snakes are in a rack system and have deli cups, I'm keeping all my dishes for if/when I can buy a house and move all my reptiles into awesome display enclosures. Right now, only my DeKay's brown snakes have an Exo-Terra dish because they are WAY too small for the rack. But you are super hard core when it comes to washing your dishes. I also use my kitchen sink to wash my deli cups. But I let then soak in super hot soapy water. Then use a similar sponge like yours to scrub them, then rinse and refill. Same when I was using Exo-Terra dishes. And then I just rinse out the sink.
ET reminds me of my T. apophysis slings, every time I change the water I make the mistake of feeding them at the same time. They love to throw their boluses into the water dish when I just changed it. For the QOTD: I change my reptiles’ and frog’s ever two days, for the tarantulas it’s every week (with the exception of the T. apophysis slings it is 2x a week). Dish soap and hot water are the best bang for your buck cleaner.
It is funny how the turtles immediately reacted to the new water. You could use a barrier around the bowl to prevent a lot of soil from getting in, like for example pieces of bark that could scrub the animals off when walking. It is just a random idea that I thought about right now, I haven’t tested it. I usually clean my water bowls with bleach, and I have a problem with mineral deposits too. Also, have you ever witnessed smaller animals like geckos actually using the water bowl?
Seriously this. Dishes are my most hated chore which means I now know in my soul that I need to curate my collection at less than 10, possibly less than 7. Even if the leaf turtles are so cute as they kool-aid man into frame when they hear the water. (My current collection is 0 unless you count the two cats)
I wash my Toad water dishes every two days. And for my Crested Geckos ever Tuesday and Friday. But my other Reptiles I house in Paludariums with good Filters, there I don’t must to clean the Water.
Your process is very similar to mine. I have two sinks in the bathroom off my main reptile room and one is the designated reptile sink. I use toothbrushes too, and I have a large scrubber for my big snake water dishes. Great video!
I love my Exo Terra water dish for my Rainbow Boa. I change it every two days washing it with hot soapy water. She's generally pretty tidy though - pretty much the opposite of E.T.!
I use the five gallon buckets from Home Depot (Hardware store in the states). I put all the dishes in there and bring them outside to clean out the large gunk and fill the bucket up with water, dish soap, some chlorohex and some vinegar and let them soak for a few minutes. I do my frogs water dishes daily, micro geckos every other day 😊great video, I feel the scrubbing pain 😂😂
Hehe all the turtles look at you like "yes water boy change my dish so I may wash my muddy feet" lol ..I do my gecko dishes every other day ,except one of Herman and Lily's ,they have 2 dishes each because th like to poop in one of them
I clean my leopard geckos water dishes once a week since they never put dirt inside. For my African land snails they get a clean water dish every day. My crested gecko doesn’t have a water dish since he always drinks from the leaves :)
Same, but add all over plants, and everything else but not in the food and water. We have two same size females in one BIG enclosure and one of the girls managed to even get her roommate!
I have an African bullfrog so I have to change his/hers water bowl daily because he/she always goes to the bathroom in it 😊 p.s. I love watching your videos , you have an amazing collection of animals
Each of my animals have two water sources, if you count my crested geckos ( which *YES* they do drink standing water from a dish) they have three sources, counting the drips from misting. That way, in theory, my snakes can soak in one and drink from the other, and yes every couple days they get changed and wiped clean but I only deep clean them weekly. I also don't mix them up. Each animal gets the ones they have always had.
I was thinking that you could use the dishes that stick to the sides of enclosures to provide a clean water source higher in the enclosure. I use them for my Crested Geckos as well as a ground level one.
Savs: "no time for swim, gotta be monitoring the lunch situation" Is that a purslane vine in the front of your blue boi dart frog enclosure? My plan for my collection is 100% fully glazed ceramic and stainless steel. (The cats have two large stainless dog bowls)
Hahaha. Nope, I’m not 100% sure which plant you are referring to but I don’t have that species in my reptile room actually! Awesome! Thanks for sharing!
I know it's an older video -- However, I have to clean my water dishes every day lol (I breed veiled chameleons and own 2 adult bearded dragons) and they LOVE to poop in their water! My leopard geckos and crestie are good about their water and keeping it clean, but the chams and beardies always (ALWAYS) poop right in their water LOL
I found to save some time I will run them in the dishwasher on high heat with no soap. My gecko HATES when i wash with sunlight xD so now I just boil water clean them with the dishwasher
Dayyan, you ever think about the giant Madagascar leaf tail geckos? Man their defensive stance is wild, freaked me right out the first time I saw it! But their beautiful though…otherwise lol Do you bathe any of your kids? Maybe a bathing tutorial would be handy too! To see Sabzi enjoying a filled bathtub would be a hoot.
I actually used to keep them about 6 years ago! They are impressive animals :)! I sometimes give the turtles and monitors a soak. No one else really. Haha could be fun!
It's definitely NOT overkill! You should do the side of the fridge too! I wish I could instill that mentality in my husband! His belief is that ,"it hasn't killed anyone yet". I happen to know there are things worse than death!
I love ur content sooo much ur so caring with ur animals and love watching your videos are those turtles semi aquatic? Or do they only need a water dish?
I only own one spoiled Hognose he has 2 dishes one on the Warm side and one on the cooler side. I cleen them every second day I make a solution out of isopropanol 90%, citric acid and some dish soap I'll spray the solution on it let it sit for a few minutes and the scrubb them with one of those I do not know who to describe it in english dishwashing brushes? I use also other Towels etc. for his dishes than for my mammals.
Wait!! It just hit me...ONE sink??? No way!!!! That is such a pain, it makes no sense!! I would NOT live some place with one sink! My heart goes out to you!
Wow i had no idea you were on TH-cam this long. I just watched a video with you as a kid with a bearded dragon. Sad that you don't do beardies anymore because that's my reptile if choice. I have 2 myself. Still enjoy watching your videos though. 😊
Get those turtles mini pools. Mine loves hers. Plus its easier to clean for you! Snakes seem to enjoy large water pools too. I do my filters every week and top off the levels every 3 days. Dawn and hot water with a toothbrush is the best cleaner for hard buildup. Diluted vinegar for windows is nice but dont do that unless the animal is removed and the enclosure is WELL VENTALATED afterwards before the animal returns. I love your monitors branches!
I don’t have animals that purposely dirty their waters very often, and calcium deposits is the biggest issue I have. I clean about once a week, unless I see that they are dirty. I just use hot water and dish soap.
Fair enough! These turtles are worth it though! 😉 Calcium deposits that you can’t get rid of easily can be lifted with overnight white vinegar soaks! Hope that helps
Do you have to treat you water before putting it in their dishes? We have to treat ours a BUNCH before it’s at an acceptable ph! Awesome video as always!
Very important point! I should have mentioned that I use Reverse osmosis water for all my reptiles and amphibians. This is considered in how regularly I supplement their food since they don’t get minerals from their water :). Hope that helps!
QOTD: Oliver has a water fountain. It has two filters included. So I take it completely apart every Sunday and scrub every single piece with soap and water. I use bleach on the parts that can have it as well. I top up his water as needed throughout the week.
Lighting the animals please! I’m curious when you turn enclosure lighting off, and on. And do you use an auto timer? Do you change the length of the “day” in winter? Do you vary duration and intensity of lighting by species? All the things. I’m curious about all the 💡things.
I don't have a water dish for my crested gecko well I have but its just a bottle top and I don't really clean it because he normally drinks from glass and he is only 10 months old
Another great video! QOTD: I clean my water bowls a few times a week. Wish I could do it more often but I work full time as a vet tech so I'm busy lol. I use very hot water and a toothbrush too. Question for you, what cork do you use on the walls of Sabzi/Basil's enclosure? Do you have a link perhaps? I have a Green Keeled Belly lizard who would enjoy climbing them :) thanks!
Thank you so much! I'm so happy you enjoyed the video! Thanks for sharing what you do! Sure! It's called small planet supply and the product is called thermacork!
Why? Bc it's not right until it's muddy, Dad! That's why! Turtle's Pledge Clause 3, part B. We GOTTA do it! I do a vinegar soak, scrub with a tooth brush, fresh water rinse and dry in the sun every 2-3 days. Once a month dog bowls, tarantula water caps, and reptile bowls ego through the dishwasher on sanitize setting, chicken drinkers get a 10% bleach soak.
Yeah i agree two days is perfectly fine.three maybe but thats at a push. The water starts to get slimey at 3 days especially if in a warm enclosure and if any natural material like dirt, shed skins and of course turds gets into the water. I saw a video about a guy that keeps several gtp’s and when asked how often he cleans his dishes and changes the water he said FIVE OR SIX DAYS!!! I was like wtf? That is not good especially with species like gtp’s or emerald tree boas that are somewhat fragile and more susceptible to bacteria etc. I change the water every single day just giving the inside of the dish a good clean but the uneven outside takes a bit longer to clean so i do that once a week. Never had any problems so far. Knock on wood🤛
Thanks for sharing! Different people have differ methods that work best for them and your animals but I agree that I personally, would be concerned about waiting that long to wash my own animals water dishes that infrequently. Thank you for watching!
QOTD: I have a bearded dragon and aquatic turtles. I only replace my bear dies water every few days because he doesn’t use it at all. He pretty much ignores it 😑
Thanks for sharing your routine! It's good you still do it every few days because the water sitting + warm temps does produce some bacteria. You can usually feel the inside of the dish is almost slimy.
I am so sorry. I keep thinking I won't comment again, and then you say something or I see something I just have to respond to. SO those really are the cutest turtles I have ever seen. I have never really wanted a turtle because of how dirty they are and they tend to have a lot of health issues from what I have gathered. Anyway, if you put their water right up against say a clean rock, they might go from that, rather than the substrate, into the water.
ISOPODS???????????? I luv ISOPODS !!! Sadly my colony of isopods died yesterday it made me sad cause I had an orange armadillidium named Jude I shall honor her!!!!!!!!!!!!
But this proves that life does have an ending sometimes good sometimes bad but that's why you shall make sure you give them the chance at life they need.😊 Man I'm so good at speeches
I’m sure you know what you are doing it if it works for your animals it’s all good! Just be mindful not to wait too long because bacteria can harbour in the dishes! Thanks for watching!
You'd be surprised. So many people think crested geckos don't drink out of water dishes but I have video after video and several pictures of them drinking. Animals are most vulnerable when drinking and eating so they tend to keep that private.
IS THAT BLACK SNAKE KIRA OR KIA? CUZ MY NAME IS KIRA LOLZ :D LOVING THE ANIMALS THOUGH, MY WATER CHANGING ROUTINE IS ALSO ABOUT EVERY SECOND TO 3RD DAY :D JUST RINSE IT WITHOUT AN CHEMICALS CUZ A CORN SNAKE ISNT THAT MESSY, AND MY TARANTULA IS NOT MESSY AT ALL :P
man you lie ..... looking at that ..... i know it been more than 2 days .... some of it is really bad ...... some it longer ...... some of it been awhile
Thanks for the suggestion! I may see if that works but honestly, I'm a bit doubtful haha. These cute turtles really cary that dirt around on their feet!
I always appreciate these sorts of videos that involve more of the maintenance side of keeping exotics. Unboxing and enclosure builds are exciting to view but I imagine get people into the hobby who aren't as prepared for the regular upkeep because those videos make up a majority of content.
Thank you so much! This is such a valid point! I'm very happy to be making these sorts of videos!

Hahahah 🐢✨.
Thanks for sharing your routine! Neat differences for each type of pet!
It depends on the reptile, most of the time every two days. Also could you plz do a update on your garter snake.
Sure! 🐍
Can we get a dart frog update
TH-cam needs to fix what there doing...u posted this 3 days ago and I just now got a notification
Really? Wow thanks for telling me!
@@Reptiliatus no problem man
Are they poison dart frogs
Is that the max size for the leaf turtles?
Yes, 11cm or so :)
My beardie hates the water in her terrarium. Shed rather drink from her bath twice a week.
I was my dishes every other day
QOTD: I have a bearded dragon and aquatic turtles.
@@Reptiliatus thanks!
Just wondering did u change gloves from washing dirty water dishes to cleaning ur sink for human use?
Yes at least twice :).
Sadly my colony of isopods died yesterday it made me sad cause I had an orange armadillidium named Jude
I shall honor her!!!!!!!!!!!!
But this proves that life does have an ending sometimes good sometimes bad but that's why you shall make sure you give them the chance at life they need.😊
Man I'm so good at speeches
Aka dion
Dayyan
QODT I admit i do it much less than you. But it seems the Vipergecko dont use it at all, and the Grass Lizard have running water with a Filter.
@@amandastakeonit7402 You might be right, though many desert species live of the juices from the prey. But i keep the water dish supplied in there.

Thanks for sharing!
5:20 that's 2 days? I call bs
This being is so fine ♥️ 😎
man you lie ..... looking at that ..... i know it been more than 2 days .... some of it is really bad ...... some it longer ...... some of it been awhile
Have you tried using rocks around the water dish or putting the water dish on a piece of slate, to help minimize the dirt getting into the water?
Thanks for the suggestion! I may see if that works but honestly, I'm a bit doubtful haha. These cute turtles really cary that dirt around on their feet!
