I took up spoon carving about two years ago. One tip that I happened upon with my carving log is to use a chisel and remove some 1/2” deep gouges in the top of the log and that allows your spoon to sit right down in the groove and the spoon won’t jump around while you’re removing large bits with the axe. Also good for keeping your spoon from slipping and your hand from getting chopped. Looks great! We now regularly see spoon carvers at our local farmers markets so it’s good to see more carvers out there.

Always carve in green wood and let the rough-carved spoon dry out, wrapped in cloth before final finishing. Dry wood is much harder to carve and splits much easier!

Great setup with the mule. I made one too, more like a module that I can bolt onto a worktable, but it works for me!
If I can suggest something, you may want to look at Veritas miniature spokeshave. I own one and use it for making dry-wood spoon and spatulas. It's surprisingly capable!

Very good video. I am guessing that the wood for spoons as most other crafts. The wood is seasoned approx. 1yr per in of thickness . After seeing how well the spoon mule works . I will be adding an attachment to my shaving horse . Thanks again .

I make spoons. I've always done mine on a shave horse with a drawknife. However, I use a custom made drawknife that is about 6" wide. I have better control with the smaller drawknife. But, I'm thinking of changing to a spoke shave. I'm also wanting to build a spoon mule.

The mule looks great. Peeling wood is so satisfying whether spitting fire wood, fine carving or wood turning. Goof for the soul. The band saw blade looks a little aggressive. A finer blade say 6TPI would be a better cut for these pieces

Gransfors Bruks Swedish carving axe is a phenomenal tool. I use the double beveled one. Very very sharp but very useful.

Where to get one of those small spokeshaves?
Or better yet, a good tutorial to make one?
Some good pics from various angles would suffice. I couldn't tell with you waving it about, but lt looked like the tangs came into the body from the back rather than the bottom, is that correct?

The head is locked in with a wedge, but can be moved and locked along the mule body for your positioning/size needed.
