I worked for the supplier that made raw pigment for Ferrari back in the 2000s. Red and black are usually quite soft and you are right there's nothing you can really do about it except pile on more paint. Which they don't do, of course. It just seems off-putting that a Ford Mustang has better paint on it than a supercar. Oh, and a more reliable engine and transmission? You kind of wonder how they actually make a worse car for many times the money.

It's the same reason why Porsche and Mercedes-Benz and all the other Euro luxury carmakers nickel and dime for things that are standard on a Honda CR-V like adaptive cruise control. They make their cars however they want to because they know their buyers will buy them regardless.

Or electric vehicles from Tesla that are flat-out beat by Audi and VW in every measure except for drag-racing. $120K vs $65K and the consumer car just works and drives better.

It’s too bad everything on the road these days is white, black and silver/gray with a tiny smattering of blue and red. We’ve gone back to the gilded age where beautiful hues are only available on expensive cars. The rest of us get drab. Probably due in large part to most people leasing these days. When the cars come back the dealers want them to appeal to the widest audience. That said my wife’s old Passat’s silver paint was thick, durable and had a lot of depth. It buffed out spectacularly.

I was under the impression that bass clear paint jobs were the older type and that single stage urethane were more common these days. Every time we ever painted an old Chevy or Cadillac 60s 70s 80s we would use base clear. Even on crash damage we would do the same. But we attempted one stage urethane on a rebuilt and it turned out terrible reacting with the factory primer bubbling up like a pizza crust. The only reason I picked single stage polyurethane paint was because I was told it is thicker harder more resilient of a shell than bass clear. I was wanting to paint the car just to make sure it doesn’t rust, I did not even care about the color it was more just to make sure it is completely covered where it could not start rusting and that all the rust spots were taken care of. Candy coating just for longevity.

I did a lot of research into why the 60gb PS3 seemed to be the only “fat” one that doesn’t break. In all others, they used an “environmentally friendly” solder or conductive silver paste. Over time, that evaporated because it wasn’t as good as the “toxic” solder. So what’s more sustainable, a gaming console that will work forever, or tossing out and buying multiple replacement machines?

I'm not a paint expert but I'm not sure that's how it works. For the clear to adhere without artifacts, the surface would have to be sanded most likely. Not to mention the hours of prep work in removing badges/emblems, trim, bumpers, mirrors, spoilers, etc to get every crevice. But yeah, aside from that, the clearcoat thickness might be too thin from the factory to properly prep it for more clear on top without damaging the basecoat.

One thing when I was a detailer back in the day was actually to try and see if they could be comfortable without a cut and polish because that removes material. Some things it can be very difficult like with thinner coats because only so much can do.
Even more if a metallic single stage. The metal flake will settle out when paint is applied. so when you polish, you thin the color, and leave the flake which will create a shift in color where it can thin out unevenly.

    1. Dude is talking up the job at which he probably is really good at.
    2. They only ship those with imperfections to the US.
The large productionnumber is a straight up lie. Ferrari only produces 11.000 units per year in total. That's 30 cars per day from five productionlines! Each Ferrari takes three months to complete so the attention to detail is second to none.

I don’t know how much paint they use on cars but from experience the weight per gallon of water based coatings is anywhere from 5-10lbs. If they went from 12-15 mils to 5-6 mils they could drastically reduce the weight of coatings they are putting on the car. For a company that spends millions on alloys to reduce weight it could be a creative solution.

Some of the Audi and Porsche paint I've seen has had orange peel I couldn't believe.
