to be fair, it was only one person (an outspoken person!) who called the keeper a "clown", not the whole nation. There was no shame in being edged out by Poland, they were one of the best teams in this era as they showed in 1974 and 1982 world cups.
Poland were a top team, they won their home match in Katowice 2-0 pretty comfortably. Shilts was cold. As a ten year old I couldn't believe England were out of the World Cup it didn't compute. Happy Birthday Mr. Tomaszewski!
What a beauty classy comment! I miss England you represent in this honest elegant thoughts. I saw streets of London in 1968 on TH-cam - pure happiness, smiling people, The Beatles era. Humanity. What now? I was in London a few years ago. There is a jungle.
A few years after this game, Brian Clough contacted Tomaszewski to apologise. He said that he never really thought he was a clown or a poor goalkeeper but was saying it to underplay Sir Alf's achievement if England had won... (he had one eye on his job I think). Tomaszewski was a fan of Brian Clough.
As an 8 year old, I remember that game in late October 1973 (a rear live tv showing) sitting there watching/hoping that England would win. I have never seen a match so one sided ! and my 15 year old brother Peter, shouting and swearing (everybody else were out of the house) "Old Big Head" Brian clough caling Jan Tomazewski a Clown ... That was my first real feelings of Football Hurt ... England supporters had to wait 7 years until we reached a Football Tournament (the 1980 European Championships in Italy) we flopped !.
I always thought that only we in Poland recall that match and Domarski's score over and over. When I realized that it was also very important the part of English football history I started to feel really proud of those guys :) The truth is that we played great in '74 World Cup. We had a team able to win world championship, which actually proved the strenght of that English national team.
Beating England at Wembley during 1970's wasn't such a shock and Poland in 1972-78 was likely the 2nd or 3rd best European team of that time. It was just a shock for those people in England who were living in fantasies that their football is "best in the world". It has never been and will never be.
bandwagon22 Poland was playing phenomenal football during that time. Likely they had the best team at the time in Europe and in the world. Sure they lost to Germany during the WC in a game played in abnormal conditions. Also, they lost their 2 best strikers. Lubanski was injured during first game with England and Szarmach couldn't play that game against Germany either. Huge loss to the team. I wonder how would Germany do just without Gerd Muller alone.
STFU. We almost beat Germany in 70. We had won the World Cup in the previous competition. It was a shock at the time. Not taking away from Polands quality. Also, they didn't beat us, it was 1 - 1 . So educate yourself
Weren't Poland 3rd in the 1982 World Cup? That golden era of Polish football probably not as well-known as it should be due to Poland being behind the iron curtain at the time.
Always fascinating to revisit this. It must have been such a hammer blow for the English national team at the time- they seemed to take many years to recover. A few things stand out for me: - Brian Clough's behaviour was tragic- so little respect and he must have felt such a fool afterwards. There's so much focus on Norman Hunter, yet the great Bobby Moore made a bigger mistake during the game in Poland which resulted in Poland's second goal- rarely mentioned directly as a historical note.
Cloughie was right. I`ve never seen a luckier goalkeeper in my life. Looked like something you`d see in a circus. Ball was hitting him everywhere, ankles, shins, studs, arsehole. He was flapping at crosses, missing his punches. Shots were blocked on the line, kicked off the line, woodwork saved him. Absolute clown like performance but it was just his lucky day. You could replay that game a thousand times and England would have won every other game. Unbelievable. And to rub salt in the wounds, the Poles went on to finish 3rd in the World Cup leaving everyone to wonder what might have been.
Let's be honest, the only "success" you'll ever have is cheering England's failure. If by a miracle you manage to qualify, you definitely aren't getting beyond the group stage! Lol
Having read most of the comments here, I have to add my two cents. I don't know if Clough apologized to Tomaszewski, but reportedly they became quite friendly and there were no hard feelings. Fact is that our team was highly motivated because the English players and press acted very over-confident prior to the match, some disrespectful remarks had been made. Fact is also that the English side played very well and it was a shame only one team could qualify from this group.
In Poland we always had and have the best goalkeppers on the world - Jan Tomaszewski, Jerzy Dudek (Feyenord, Liverpool, now Real), Artur Boruc (Celtic), Tomasz Kuszczak (Secon Goalkepper in Manchester).
What made it even more dramatic was that, after so many saves by Tomaszewski, England had two more chances in the final minute of the game: one was the header by Hector, cleared off the goal line by Szymanowski, and the shot by Colin Bell, cleared off the goal line by Bulzacki.
england pretty much blew qualification long before this game - the lost away to Poland and drew 1-1 with Wales in Wembley. Poland were arguably the best team at the 1974 World Cup Finals finished top scorers and winning 6 of the 7 games, they played there - with a waterlogged pitch being to blame for their narrow loss to west germany.
I think the authors of this document underestimated the Polish attack in that match. There were some hundred per cent situations there with Lato facing the goalkeeper alone among them. However the situations in which England couldn't score were amazing and there were plenty of them.
My mistake goldyn, I can see you were referring to 1970 & not 1973. I agree that Bonetti had a substandard game against West Germany, especially as how magnificent he had been a few weeks earlier in the FA Cup final games against Leeds.
That October 17 World Cup qualifier at Wembley in 1973 between England and Poland is now fourty seven years old. As a teenager of thirteen I was shattered as so many of my classmates that included LVK when England failed to qualify for the 1974 World Cup finals in West Germany. That 1-1 draw with England enabled Poland to pip the former thus qualifying for the Munich finals. Sir Alf Ramsey's future as the England supremo was sealed with that failure to qualify but it did not lead to his immediate sacking which came in effect May 1974. What are we to make of England's crucial World Cup match with Poland that fateful night at Wembley on 17 October 1973? Yes it was the Polish goalkeeper Jan Tomaszewski dubbed the "Clown" by Brian Clough whose miraculous saves albeit by luck denied England her finest hour in football. So many chances went abegging that night.Chivers,Channon,Clarke, Peters,Bell and Kevin Hector had their chances but the ball just would not go in.And England forced 26 corners to Poland's just two. But the visitors defended magnificently to hold on to the draw thus sending England out of the World Cup finals since 1950. It was Sir Alf's last ever charge of England in a competitive but the FA of England should have sacked him much earlier. All the same it was the blackest day in English football and for Martin Chivers it would be the last time he wore the England shirt as he would never play for the country again.
For those of us who were there, either watching it on the box as I was or at the ground...... It was a feeling that stayed for quite some time. Don't forget, Poland went onto beat Italy in the Group game (we would have been playing against them had we beat the Poles) 2-1.... again Tomaszewski played a blinder... he did make some great saves, but a lot of the stuff we fired in was straight at him so he looked like he'd made a great save.
Two years later and the admiral England shirt transformed the look of the team, like a another age. My dad bought me the kit. Unfortunately the team weren't very good and neither was I.
One of the few occasions when Brian Clough was wrong. Poland finished 3rd in the '74 World Cup, and I think they finished 3rd in ''78. I think most England fans realise that there is some way to go before England become a top international side. As many posts have rightly stated, always respect your opponents and never underestimate them. England had already been beaten by Poland so should have known this game would be no walk in the park.
In the 1978 qualifiers England were pitted against an excellent Italian side featuring the likes of Zoff, Bettega, Causio & Gentile. There was no shame in losing out to them
This was my first fully recalled England game at 8 years of age, the Polish goalkeeper played brilliantly, although Brian Clough called him a clown. One thing wich was so prevalent was the overall play and scoring chances by England, was immense.I will never forget the feeling of hurt...something us England supporters had to get used to!
You can at least be glad you won a world cup with the help of officials and an Azerbaijani ref. But sometimes England lacked a bit of luck, under-performed at other times.
Thanks Simon! Poland should win the World Cup 1974! But the raining game with Germany, You know. Many Germans says Poland was better than the Netherlands and Germany as well in this time. Football is a lucky game sometimes ;-)
The '74 finals was the first World Cup I remember. England's absence meant taking an interest in other teams. I particularly remember Holland in '74. Just imagine if Holland had played Poland in '74! England were in decline- they'd drawn with Wales at Wembley and failed to qualify for the '78 finals. And Tomaszewski played with an injured wrist!
Little Wales had to k.o England and Poland to qualify, for the previous world cup they had to k.o finalists Italy, for 78 they had to k.o Scotland and Euro champs Czechoslovakia, and regularly had very tough qualifying groups. I loved that Holland total football team of 74, more than any international team.
i was 7 years old watching it along with my Dad in Poland - pretty much one way traffic - but kind of heroic as far as Poles go with Tomaszewski as a new born star, how about the save he made after nr 4 fired a bullet from the penelty box, in my opinion the best save ever made by the goalkeeper in modern era
The McFarland foul which would have got him an instant red card these days is never shown on British TV. The first time I saw it was on a youtube video uploaded by a Polish fan.
Unlucky though England were, we should not forget that Poland finished third in the world cup of 1974, so perhaps not so bad a team. I loved the clip of Cloughie giving post match analysis, following which Brian Moore and the Doog got quite stroppy with him. Alas, we will never know for sure whether or not OBE would have made a good England manager!
@staszekgobi I don't know if you noticed, but before Britain declared war on Germany TWO countries invaded Poland - Germany and Soviet Russia. We may have helped to get the Germans out of Poland, but we sure as fuck left the country to rot under Stalin as soon as we had done. So how exactly did Britain save Poland during the 2nd world war? The Poles who fought bravely in our military did much more to save British freedoms than the Brits did for the Poles.
It should also be mentioned that although Poland would go on to prove that they had deserved to qualify, the team to play against England wasn't the same team that became a sensation in West Germany. The latter would never have to defend their goal for 90 minutes, because they were a much more offensive and confident team. Mlynarczyk was deifinitely not a better keeper than Tomaszewski, he had some major mistakes in important matches. And I agree with Goldyn:That save against Clarke was amazing
alot of things to note with that poland goal.... why did hunter trap the ball rather than put it out the ground when he had minimal cover, why did hughes take so long to cover off demarski (sp?) and most importantly, why did banks let that go through his hands?...
I could not agree more. Poland had a great team in the 70`s and early 80`s.The only reason why they did not win the world cup in 1974 or at least make the final was that their attacking fire power was greatly reduced by the referee who allowed the semi final game against Germany in ankle deep puddles of water to proceed , which resulted in a 1:0 loss to the host nation. Poland against Holland would have been a spectacular final and I would have placed my bet on Poland.
Yes Poland and Holland were really the revelations in 74, but as always the germans cast their dark shadow over it all. However Poland had a massive slice of luck to get by England that night so cannott complain about the torrential rain in 74. In world cup 06 it was scorching hot every day, i think world cup 74 ; in the same country it rained every day it seemed
Never underestimate a good goalkeeper and LUCK. Terrible errror down the right side. Shows you when you are attacking 95% of the time, you can get caught out!
Is there enyone who could make me sure what is Cloug saying in 1:44. Please help :D I'm pretty sure he said: ''I have a nail here in my hand, and I want to go into a polish coffin or - perhaps insert outs- ?(that last part isn't clear for me)? thanks, guys.
They "forgot" to say POL had won first match against ENG already. Anyway POL finished 3rd in WC next year scoring most goals in the tournament and beating ARG, ITA and BRA, Lato became top-scorer with 7 goals. In '78 ENG also didn't qualify to WC while POL finished 5-6th. In '82 ENG was eliminated in 2nd round, POL gained bronze again. At last, in '86 Lineker scored hat-trick against POL. In 90's both teams played regularly in WC/EC qualifications. ENG always won at home and usually drew away.
Hunter was actually rated better than Bobby Moore by many pundits, because he was faster and had the same level of technique. I would have like to have seen a Moore-Hunter combination at the back for England, but they were both left sided players so Ramsey never played them together. It would be interesting to have seen Hunter start matches in the 70 world cup, England might have done better
Dear England, in 1974 World Cup Poland has beaten: Yugoslavia,Sweden,Italy,Argentina and Brazil. The great Beckenbauer said that the only team that the Manschaft was afraid of was Polen . So don’t feel bad , btw you lost the first meeting in Poland 2:0 .
@CiaranMcVeigh actually the match was shown on ITV and Hugh Johns was the commentator, Barry Davis recorded this. Hugh Johns was the much better commentator
@TheStandofTheLastGuy They had to face two very good teams before 1974 and 1978, with outstandings goalkeepers and forwards. 1973: Poland with Tomaszewsky and an incredible attack with Lato, Szarmach, Deyna and Gadocha. Later, in 1977, Italy with Dino Zoff (maybe the best goalkeeper ever), a good deffense and a couple of sensational forwads like Rossi and Bettega. Very bad luck for just qualification groups.
Jan Tomaszewski actually did not forget how to be proper clown. He perform his role constantly but on the other field. Greetings for english colleagues and friends. Cheers!
I love "Cloughie" and I do believe He used that term to deflect the fact that Ramsey was going to get the sack and He did not to get involved in all the speculative talks...
They say shilton should have saved that shot but that was a good low strike under his body, if Brazil had scored that goal everyone would go nuts, and Poland weent on to prove that they were a good team and did well in the world cup. even had the top goal scorer in the comp.
Hunter said that he never played more one sided game in his life, i disagree, you mean beating austria 7:0 just few days before was less one sided?!? the issue is that this solar system had not seen so many wasted opportunities in one game. don't feel bad england, you lost to the 3rd best country in the world - viva '74. calling pols - animals was a mistake since they saved your ass during 2nd world war and firing ramsey was your biggest mistake. the point was brian clough - the real clown.
As it turned out, there was no shame in losing out to the Poles, the Poles probably win the WC in 74, had the West Germans not had the home-field advantage. That was a great Polish team.
Ramsey was England's greatest manager by a long way. If he had allowed himself to be pressured by the media into picking Greaves for the 1966 final instead of the hard working Hunt or the in form Hurst, England would have lost. Greaves never produced the goods in 1962 or 1966 and was rightly left out.
to be fair, it was only one person (an outspoken person!) who called the keeper a "clown", not the whole nation. There was no shame in being edged out by Poland, they were one of the best teams in this era as they showed in 1974 and 1982 world cups.
Brian Clough was one of Europe's greatest ever managers. Two E.Cups (Champions League now) and two league wins with smaller clubs.
The "clown" was going to be selected the best goalkeeper at the 1974 World Cup.
The saves he made weren't that great to be fair. He was no-where near Shiltons level. The bloke parried the ball out when he could've held it
Poland were a top team, they won their home match in Katowice 2-0 pretty comfortably. Shilts was cold. As a ten year old I couldn't believe England were out of the World Cup it didn't compute. Happy Birthday Mr. Tomaszewski!
2-0 was in Chorzów, BY Katowice :)

One of most exciting matches in football history. Poles felt a happiness in the gray communist reality for a moment.

As a Scot this remains one of my favourite games !

Surely one of the top most exiting matches in history
this match came after the Hampden win v the Czechoslovakia eh?

Bryan Moore defense of Tomasweski, after Clough repeatedly calling him a clown, is priceless. One of the funniest moments of all time!
Easy boys. Poland were 3rd team on the World Cup in '74.
Weren't Poland 3rd in the 1982 World Cup? That golden era of Polish football probably not as well-known as it should be due to Poland being behind the iron curtain at the time.

It was a legendary match for Polish football. First step for international glory in World Cup '74.
You could have won the whole thing. Germany were lucky to beat you by all accounts
Amazing goalkeeper! What saves! Why can't we have a goalkeeper like that now?
The saves weren't that amazing. Fun game though.
P.S. I love how they didn't show how they held onto Lato when he was obviously going to get a goal ;)
PAMIĘTAMY!!!!!
RIP Norman Hunter .. a great player for the mighty Leeds United and England ...99.99% of the time

Love the way Clough refuses the truth that the keeper had made good saves. Classic Cloughie.

It was Shilton in goal against Poland goldyn12345. Bonetti was the keeper when England were beaten 3-2 by West Germany in 1970.
alot of things to note with that poland goal.... why did hunter trap the ball rather than put it out the ground when he had minimal cover, why did hughes take so long to cover off demarski (sp?) and most importantly, why did banks let that go through his hands?...
Poland against Holland would have been a spectacular final and I would have placed my bet on Poland.
can you upload the whole show?
Spot on. Poland were a good side and England were arrogant
Cant argue with ya mate, and im a massive England fan.:)
Are Emlyn Hughes and Mark Hughes related?
Nope…
See 2:26 on another TH-cam video of this match: "Polska-Anglia 1973".
Quite amazing! Not shown in the video above.
Why what sort of stuff did he get up to?
He was a giant while penalties.
Great upload
It wouldn't of happen if
Liverpool's no 1 clemance was in goal ..
Hahahaha! POLAND is awesome! Kto z Polski - lajk :3 ;)
I was happy for Poland :)
I blame Shilton. But well done, Poland!
what's the name of song?
Hunter was actually rated better than Bobby Moore by many pundits, because he was faster and had the same level of technique. I would have like to have seen a Moore-Hunter combination at the back for England, but they were both left sided players so Ramsey never played them together. It would be interesting to have seen Hunter start matches in the 70 world cup, England might have done better
Norman Hunter even confessed to his error in leading to the goal scored by Jan Domarski.
as vivid now as it was as an 8yr old in 1973 does it hurt oh yes !!
It's "Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road"
Co to za muzyka na początku w tle? What is the music on background?
Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Eltona Johna
@11caulfield and Lato was the tournaments top scorer with seven goals Poland were an excellent team in that world cup
How was 1966 a sham DannyBoy? - please explain.
@CiaranMcVeigh actually the match was shown on ITV and Hugh Johns was the commentator, Barry Davis recorded this. Hugh Johns was the much better commentator
It is the blackest britsh sense of humor to give diving Stuka bomber sound in the background of Domarski's score...
even now it hurts !!!
Cheers!
Sam jesteś klaunem matole.
Explain the 3-3 draw with Finland. >:D
Derek Dougan - ex-wolves striker
