Never mind the best manager Forest ever had, Derby County ever had, or England never had, the man was one of the best human beings the world's ever had. A lovely, decent and kind man. I'm a Scot, by the way, and I loved Brian Clough.

Lovely how he unsettles the interviewer at the start by picking him up on his facts. Then at the end gives him great advice on how to improve. Thats why he was such a legendary manager!

Both Shankly and Clough built clubs from the foundations up. Clough did it twice at Derby and Nottingham Forest. Clough has to rank as the greatest manager of all time because he didn't do it at a club like Man Utd, Barcelona or Real Madrid. An unpleasant and ruthless man no doubt but a great manager nonetheless. He was also a fine player. Just look at his goal scoring record.

Fergie done it as well. Won a title with st mirren before going to Aberdeen. Breaking rangers and celtics grip on the Scottish title 3 times, bringing European success by beating Buyern Munich and real Madrid winning 2 European trophies at Aberdeen. Then going to man utd who hadn't won a title in 30 years to deliver success on an industrial scale. But I do agree you, clough is my favourite because of his football philosophy and kindness to others.

You're forgetting Manchester United weren't held in as a high regard as they are now (and I'm not on about their current form just the status of the club) when Busby went there in 1945, they hadn't won a cup since 1911.
Over the years he turned United into the force they became, changing people's perception of scouting and the importance of youth training. He built the first team that went on to win his first title in '52 after being runners up 5 times. He built the babes team that won in 56 and 57 and god knows what they'd have gone on to achieve. Most managers would have been finished after the tragedy but he went on to build the Best, Law and Charlton side.
An incredible guy. So humble and self effacing and yet had such strength and determination to achieve what he did, along of course with Jimmy Murphy.
No doubt Cloughie was a legend, along with the great Shanks, Stein, Fergie and many others. But people sometimes forget the whole incredible story of Matt and his time at United.

    • @BillyBronco73
      @BillyBronco73 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@rael1999 ... Busby won one European cup after 12 years competing in Europe with Man Utd. Clough took 5 years at Nottingham Forest to win two European cups. He also won the first division championship within 5 years of joining Derby County and 3 years of joining Nottingham Forest. His record with Peter Taylor is incredible and without comparison. Alcoholism got the better of Clough after his fallout with Taylor but at his best his record is the best.

He kept everything simple like an intelligent working class man.No glamour and showbiz bullshit. He spoke straight and what he see in a player and person.Didnt insult just for ego or effect if he told you something you listened cos he is telling a fault in your personality that is short lived unless corrected. When you know about life and being poor and observe peoples characters and what makes people tick your half way there. He had a football genius brain that went with all that which made him a hard man to beat but his sides played the game the right way and never dirty.A solid bloke with a few faults like us all but overall a great down to earth man with a knowledge and spirit to lift people and make them fulfill there true potential

It's when one overdose it that one gets a hangover in the morning. Brian Clough was a master at getting the playres mental condition right in order to get the best out of them. I think he took all this wisdom from his mother and father as he grew up in a large family which needed discipline.

The irony of his "get your facts right " is all too apparent when HE doesn't get his facts right about Manchester United and Fleming ( Celtic never had a player called Fleming at that time ) when of course it was Tam Gemmell ( he later played for Forest after leaving Celtic ) who scored the first European Cup Final goal for Celtic in 1967 and scored the first goal against Feyenoord in the 70 final

What is he on about at the start? Manchester United won it in 68 - there's even a bloke off camera saying it. Clough was no where near as good without Taylor, not a nice guy and his arrogance and his rudeness cost him in that relationship. As the years went by he fell off a cliff - Robert Rosario and he took Forest down. His greatness was a myth. On his own he wasn't much, but as a partnership him and Taylor are legendary.

Cloughie never over complicated things. He was very black and white about how he thought things should be done. He wasn't shy of saying what he thought and didn't care what people thought, unlike this precious , offended world we seem to live in these days.
He knew it was the simple things that made the great differences to how a team performed. Discipline, respect, team work, creating a siege mentality, belief, fighting for yourself and your team mates and above all else hard work.
Some of the over paid precious types could do with learning from him and the fact that in most cases talent alone isn't good enough.

@in2u2b well if you interview a great manager about football. you better make sure you have your facts right. this was also his later years where he was older and a bit less coherent. listen to an interview with him in the 70's. he was aticulate, honest and funny.

The Celtic left-back wasn't called Fleming. Cloughie also needed to get his facts right. In fact Tommy GEMMELL left Celtic to play for none other than Nottingham Forest.,

He was only late fifties when he retired. The state of his health towards the end of his time at Forest is well known. Everyone who knew him was telling him to stop. Contrast years later from this interview and he's a different man. Much healthier. Sadly he didn't last much longer after the transplant.

Man Utd won the European Cup in 1968. The booze had got to his brain unfortunately.

Great Advise on the whole business of relaxing to display your talents. But think to dismiss United so quickly when they were the pioneers for english teams playing in europe in the first place and were the first team to do well in the competition and win it is a bit much. Sadly Cloughie didn't live to see Fergie get 2 of what he's got!
