Why it is funeral food: It's a casserole. It's common in some places for friends and neighbors to give casseroles to bereaved families so they don't need to think about cooking while they prepare for a funeral. If they get too many casseroles to eat right away, they can put the extras in the freezer and reheat them later. The disposable baking tray is thoughtful, so the family doesn't need to keep track of returning any baking dishes.

Always looking for good funeral recipes, shower recipes, potluck recipes, etc. Yes funeral food is a real thing and we try to always take a cake or dessert as well. Losing a loved one has to be one of the worst times to have to think about food or feeding relatives that visit for the viewing. It's a great deal of stress on the family and a help when they don't have to worry about cooking! Thanks for the recipe!
On a tender note, this comfort food is something that can be given to bereaved family and friends during a terrible time in their lives. It is a very kind gesture. Or someone has a dark sense of humor.
No, it's not dark humor-this man is very obviously southern (United States ),and as the custom has been around for at least 150 years, when someone passes away, after the funeral everyone comes to the designated family member's home and the food people have been bring over for the past 48,hours is eaten. It's tradition, someone dies, you take a ham, Big pot of gumbo with steamed rice on the side, and a big loaf of French Bread.

In the culture where I grew up, there’s a recipe called “funeral potatoes” that people bring to the family or to the luncheon that’s traditionally held after the funeral service. Different types of jello are also traditional. It’s something I value from my upbringing, the way people bring meals when one of the adults in the family has a surgery or hospitalization, or a new baby joins the family. It’s a gesture of support and kindness, and we can always use more of that.
