Hey..just curious what you do at work? I'm just asking cuz I work underground and a gd knife is priceless. Does your rat take a beating? I need one that can handle terrible conditions, get full of mud, dropped, caked in explosives etc.. then get hosed off and be gd to go. My Buck lasted 10 yrs but the blade is a toothpick from quick sharpenings with whatever I can find and I need one handed opening. Sorry for the essay...lol

I was waiting for you to say Civivi and I knew it would be the praxis after you saw it. When I first got my praxis upon the release, you were talking a lot about Ontario rat I should have sent in my praxis or bought you one - I knew it would change a few things as it did for me. The price for that level of fit and finish, and upgraded steels over 8cr (coming from the kitchen industry previously, I have a profound respect for vG10) and I love 9cr. I have dropped that knife out of a car and it has a slight nick in the blade and that’s it. It slid across the pavement and I couldn’t find any scratches in the g10. They make quality stuff and I have been singing it from the rooftops. Everyone has been saying how great it is for an Ontario rat at that price and I fell into collecting more than just gerbers and kershaws I was seeing on amazon, after buying my first praxis and Aquila, alongside a crkt Avant. The avant is well ahead of the curve and has the best action on vinyl washers... and for 20 bucks less I get an upgraded steel, and a better fit and finish 😬😬😬 you can’t compete right Civivi. They are far more than just a good company. They are really shaking up the entire market by pushing what used to be budget brands out of the budget category, and into the blister pack / bundle knives category where you get one for free. For $40-$70 you can buy something that would have cost over 150 or so only two years ago. They are one of the biggest reasons why companies will step their game up and why we will all get better knives in the future. I firmly believe that Civivi will continue to push the boundaries and will keep making the knife companies that have been slow to change, rapidly evolve. The Japanese did it with the blade steel upgrades in the kitchen world and we got better steels in our pocket knives as an auxiliary thing. When the Japanese contended with the Germans with Henckels and Wusthoff, we got a nice mix of healthy competition and the knife world exploded in the kitchen. We are about to get the push that we needed to get us out of “cheap knives selling for a higher price” realm when the same material and quality is being offered in a sexier package. Who is going to take the uglier more expensive knife in a couple years - I think we will all opt for the banging value. The amount of value you get with Civivi is remarkable and makes you question whether or not you need some of those other budget knives that may even be more expensive (looking at you Ontario). Until there’s anything better I will continue to scream Civivi from the rooftops.

I bought a rat 1 from Walmart and eventually gave it to a friend. Then I bought an assisted opening one mainly for my wife(who loves assisted openers) and because I thought the lock would work when it's open also. It doesn't but I still like it(the rat1 platform) and it's one of my go to users.

I have used a Walther BTT since 2014 as an EDC almost every day. I totally love the fonish of the blade now, as there are no real scratches, but the blavk coating just worn off in the edges through the middle of the blade. I'm thinking about getting RAT 1 in coyote/black pattern.

I would guess it depends on what you’re wearing. I wear work clothes with a belt all the time and I pocket carry a buck 110 at about 8 oz. It doesn’t bother me. If you’re wearing slacks or gym shorts all the time or are really sensitive about weight maybe be careful, but honestly I don’t think 5 oz is much to worry about.

The Praxis and the other "$42.00" Civivi line are truly great budget knives , but then Civivi jumps to around $68.00 and up and I have no idea why, and that kills it , for me anyway. But to truly knock off the Rat's , imo , they would have to tighten the tolerances and use Bronze washers that are as smooth as or smoother than the Rat's , because that's what makes a harder use , edc , work , budget knife so great and be able to stand the test of time , and until that happens the Rat's are still King , imo. And don't hold your breath , because no one wants to use Bronze washers any more, it's just cheaper and easier to throw a set of Bearings in there and crank'em down and forget about it .

They are still the kings in my opinion in that it's the first knife I'd recommend to anyone asking. My Aus 8 R2 has been a better performer than my Benchmades. Spydercos, and a slew other knives in my modest collection. And the only other knife that comes close is my Kizer Vanguard Dukes (I shaved the flipper tab to about half). But, oddly enough, I edc my 940-2 the most and after I get it reground, it'll be just about perfect for me. Until...

    Fun fact about titanium
Medical titaniun implants are made from grade1 titanium (low oxide) this titanium oxidizes in the body and when remelting, it can be cleaned up but it’s cheaper to make grade1 from new titanium so used medical implants are used to make lower grades titanium like grade 2 (medium oxide) or grade 3 (high oxide) and alloys like grade 4 (NiTi) or grade 5 (6al4v or tc4) this means that your knife handle is possibly partly made from your dead grandma’s artificial hip

@@tankcrowe5417 I have both the Rat-1 and the Cutjack. Both are very good. As a straight up work knife, I'd say the Rat is the winner just because of the thicker, heavier handle which works much better in a gloved hand. Very thin and slicey blade with decent ergos.
I love the Cutjack as well, it has a better fidget factor as a flipper, and is also no slouch in the cutting and slicing category. The knife really locks into the hand, especially with that forward finger choil for finer tasks. I will give the Cutjack a ding for the scale texture being almost too grippy against the pocket clip, but after wedging 2 quarters under the clip for the first two nights I had it, that wasn't nearly as much of an issue.
Both knives are great, but I'd still recommend the Rat first to a knife noob or someone looking for an upgrade to their gas station special as a great all-around cutting tool.

I recently purchased the Rat 1 and was disappointed with the liner lock. It was very stiff and difficult to push down to close the knife. I tried to open and close it a bunch to break it in, but it became too painful after a while and I returned it. Do you think it was just that one particular knife or is that normal? best edc knife is a box cutter.. gerber exchange a blade is 2.2 oz with a stupid sharp razor blade which is $25 cnd, a modern frame lock same as the eab from gerber is best. liner locks are ok but it is a 8th the thickness of the tang, so a liner lock sucks as bad as 304 stainless. as for steel ppl will hate but 8cr is harder, more stain and wear resistant compared to some expensive steels. 8cr is alway lower mid tear on hardness, toughness wear resistance, sharpen-ability so on but "better" steels are at the bottom of some at top of few
