+Black Owl Outdoors I'm sure you already know about it, or have one, but I've been eyeballing the Kershaw Skyline. I'm torn between this knife and the Skyline. Which would you recommend?

I've had both the 1 and 2 in AUS8 and D2. They're great.The edge geometry is excellent.
This was perfect because I actually decided yesterday that I was going to buy the RAT Model II. Now after watching this two year update, I'm DEFINITELY buying it.
I agree. The size and weight of the knife make it a perfect EDC. I use this knife all the time. I don't tend to use my other folders as much since I purchased this one.
Thanks for the video. I have purchased many knives(over 20) and carried daily. I tried the rat 2 after this video and it was just what I am looking for. It's all I carry now. The size is perfect for me. The funny thing is all the other knives seem huge now and oversized.
That ferro rod feature is a big plus for me. I ordered one of these because my Opinel was too slow deploy for city use, but excellent for ferro rod use.
I know it's a slow deployment but the Victorinox Electrician's sheepfoot blade has a small serration for stripping insulation off of cable and it is AMAZING for striking a ferro rod. Plus, the other tools are damn sure handy around camp and at work.

I got my SOG twitch xl 4 years ago, and it is still one of my favourite knives.
I have this knife in the dark brown/black blade. I absolutely love it. It's been my EDC since the day I received it. I know some have mentioned that the paint flakes off but to me I like the look it gives the knife. It arrived razor sharp & I have done my best to keep it that way. For the price you just can't beat it.
Just picked one up in the d2 steel version. Can wait to get it! Thanks for the vid

Man i lost my first one last summer.. finally ordered a new one. Was really loving it -albeit on the small side it's still an allround great knife for the price.

Thanks for the review. I've had my RAT2 for a couple of years and love it's simplicity and light weight. Gave my RAT1 to my son who uses it for work, it was to heavy and bulky for me. I also have the Spyderco Delica 4 which is comparable in size, weight and ease of use, but it costs three times as much. The Esee Zancudo is worth considering too....perhaps?
I agree rat 1 is a big blade I am going to order a 2 for $20 you can't beat it
I have been looking at one of these for some time. I've been carrying a Kershaw Skyline for a few years and really like it. I would like to try a flat grind for an edc and at under $30, why not? Great video. Thanks.
Getting the Rat 2 instead of Rat 1. I like the size, especially since i can carry it on campus since the blade isnt longer than 3 inches

I agree with your practical and insightful review of this knife. I have a RAT II (D2) andno matter which other similar size, design, and brand of knife that I compare it to I justkeep coming back to the RAT II. AUS8 works great but the D2 steel upgrade makes thisknife almost perfection. If you can have only one knife to carry, this should be the one.For all practical purposes I believe that this knife and it's design are flawless.I also have a RAT 1 and it is in AUS8 and I have no complaints about it except for thesize which makes it a beast of a folding knife (good thing).
Great video, if you haven't already, try the Spyderco Delica it's around the same size little bit bigger handle more comfortable in the hand. The spydie hole on the blade is great with gloves, easy-to-open. Also the Rat 2 is available in D2 steel now; good stuff.
Kirk, checkout the Spyderco Dragonfly. One of my favorite EDC knives.
I'm Canadian and I have this about for two years as well. I used to edc this, but I got annoyed at how many times people would ask me about the pocket clip. I finally switched to a swiss army knife - a climber....
I carry the Benchmade Mini Griptilian. Like you, I've stopped looking at other knives since I'm happy with this one.

I usually carry a work knife and a defensive knife. My work knife was a outdoor edge mini grip which I love!!! (Highly recommended for no-clip pocket carry!) it has a nearly identical blade profile to the rat 2, is 8cr13mov, and is frame locking. For $20 I couldn't recommend a better small knife. However, the rat 2 is becoming one of my favorites as it nicely bridges the gap between work and defensive application. Now a days, I leave my microtechs and benchmades behind for this one. Sell your plastic griptillian crap and buy 3 of these in different colors!! For aus-8, clip versatility, and lined scales, this knife is hard to beat. Great purchase, jimping, and choil. Very comfortable!
I got the black version and agree with you, too bad the paint started Flaking off after a few months, wished I had got the plain blade. But other than that great blade for the price.

Ive recently picked up a Rat 2 - never had a smoother knife, even really expensive ball bearibg type knives. It really leaps out of there. The handle is a but cramped for me. I think the Rat 1 might fit my hand better. But its really big!

Just bought one of these, I was really over thinking it in regards to blade steel and all that. Every single site I checked all had the rat1 or 2 in their top lists, that is saying something.
I bet you'd like the Buck Vantage. Right around the same size and price for the 420HC version. Buck's 420HC is pretty good stuff. The S30V version isn't too expensive either.

Try out the Gerber Order Krik. Its an American made, 420HC steel folder made by Gerber and its rock solid but insanely lightweight too.
Been my primary edc for going on 6 years now; best I've ever carried. I original wanted a mini-griptillian, but the fact is I lose stuff a lot, lol, so the fact that i can replace this for about $30 is another big plus. Mine came tip-down and now i refuse to carry any other way (ironically, the mini-grip is tip up only) By the way, the ferro rod thing is cool, but if you open the knife and use the spine its also the best damn bottle opener around!
Good review. Check out the Utilitac II model 8904, by Ontario. Very similar to the RAT2, I think it is a little thinner. I have the RAT1 and the Uitlitac. The Utilitac is great EDC pocket folder and it is priced competitively.
These are fantastic little knives. They flip open really good and are razor sharp. No play in the blade either. What more can you ask for in a folder?

I'm a lot like you guys in regards to knives I want something lightweight functional and I can handle the general utility tasks. I found myself really liking the Buck Vantage avid mini (there are other models that are larger and more expensive due to steel and handle material), it shares a bunk with my Rat II! It has 12c27 Sandvic steel (same as Mora) and has a superb lock up, highly recommend it!
Because of this ch I got a rat 2 and in 2020 I finally upgraded to the D2 version 👍
Does the RAT 1 have thicker blade stock? Or is it just longer?
Can I ask what type of oil you use for the knives? I have a opinel, so I hear Vaseline is good for the pivot to keep it smooth (I may have to take mine apart, but i'm a beginner so i'm scared about it) but what about 'tactical' knives like these?
no Vaseline it gets gummy. use 3 in one oil, wd40, and mineral oil is a great option and is food grade safe if you do food prep
Nice video. One thought, which may not be an issue with modern Quality knives with tip up carry: if the blade partly opens in your pocket & you don't notice it, you're looking at a bad finger cut.
That's why you should always have the spine of the blade against the seam of your pocket, not opening out into the pocket like he does here. This also greatly reduces the chance the thumb studs will catch on other things in your pocket and accidentally open. If you carry tip down with the spine against the inside of your pocket, the knife will basically be upside down when you pull it out. I always carry tip up, spine against the seam.
two more to try in same size range are the ESEE Zancudo and the Spyderco Native. Native is similar pricepoint to the Blur and also s30v

And it looks very nice.. I never had a rat 2 but I'll definitely be getting one soon.. great video I smashed the like button...

hallow doesnt it press the liner lock mechanism and unlocks the blade?
no, the liner lock requires a lateral release, so downward pressure won't unlock the blade.
You should try the Ka Bar Dozier. Its very lightweight and pretty tough at an affordable price point.
Kabar Dozier is a nice knife but the rat2 is easier to open one handed, the jimping on the spine of the blade is better as well.
I might get this to replace my few years old tenacious.. It is getting ehh, 'well used' to say the least.

Kershaw Volt 2 is my EDC. Pretty similar specs.
I wear all my knives on the inside of my jeans completely covered (because they're illegal where I live) and even the RAT 1 which is bigger feels confortable, most times i don't even feel it and sometimes even forget its there lol

Check out the QSP Penguin. They’re a fantastic knife for the price. D2 steel, the size you like and a wide range of materials for the handle.

I have both a Ka-Bar Dozier and a Rat II. Keep the Ka-bar in my truck, it's a really good knife for the money. Not fond of the blade lock, hence it's spot as back up. The Rat II have been carrying daily for over 3 yrs. Easy to sharpen using Lansky Turn Box w/ ceramic rods. Had to lock-tite the screws for pocket clip and the black coating on blade is coming off, but this knife gets used hard daily. Considering ordering the new Rat II with d2 tool steel just to check it out. I have a couple Benchmade knives but am afraid of beating them up. You just can't go wrong with the Rat II.
So someone like you who is an ultra light non-EDC but still outdoorsy type of person. I have only one suggestion! Cold steel Finn wolf. That’s all I got for someone who can’t carry a decent size pocket knife. That is my go to! First line.

I sharpen with Arkansas oil stones because I've always used stones. My grandpa taught me how to sharpen knives and he always used stones. I'm edc'n a Spyderco tenacious. I like it but I don't think it's the best fit for me.

Black Owl Outdoors I have a few Spyderco knifes and some look tactical and some just look a little odd.
My current EDC is a semi-Spyderco. The byrd Cara Cara 2 (FRN) is an odd looking, low cost, light duty & somewhat large EDC. I carry mine point-up and it's great for EDC. The FRN scale's grip pattern is super non-slip. Nothing else on earth like it.
I want to try the RAT 2 now.. Since it's about 20% smaller than my byrd and might be a little less intimidating to the locals. :)
I may get the D2 version.
Have you ever thought of trying the Esee Zancudo. It's an awesome knife for under money and size.
You should try out any of the smaller Opinel knives, they're small robust and cheap :P

Paramilitary 2 would be high on my list to try if you haven't yet.
FingolfenRockhammer paramilitary 2 is a great knife but the price difference between the rat 2 and the paramilitary is a pretty big difference.

I worked several years in the summer, though college, on a drainage tile crew and on our family farm. We all used our knives cutting muddy 4" to 12" plastic tile pipe and I used a 420 gerber knife that came free with a pair of boots. I like the 440c but have no problem with 420. They both seems to lose "ultra sharp" just as fast but the 440c held "sharp" a little longer. Beings how I like sharpening my knives, 420 was not a hindrance at all, even when using it craptastic environments. I had that little gerber for 11 years before it was lost off the track of a dozer. The next knife was a 440c which I liked but was harder to get razor sharp but was stolen in Singapore. I'm now with a Mercator k55k knife which I carry every day. One thing, I have a Tidioute #73, but because it's expensive and nice, I don't use it. I like the k55k because it fits the hand, is big enough, thin enough, and gets really sharp with the carbon blade. The k55k is my favorite general knife now. I use fixed Lauri blade knives when camping.

It is extremely unlikely, but if something in your pocket manages to open the blade in your pocket (maybe a fall, keys catching etc) in your current tip down config, the blade when half open is aimed straight at your Ballsack, and that is enough to make me not use it. At least have it facing out toward the outer edge of your pocket. Tip up facing out seems the safest best to me...or at least tip down facing outward. The edge of your pocket then acts as a bit of a stopper or sheath edge if you like. Great knife...I have multiples but I'm a knife whore (user not collector).
EarlyMist Many, (most?) prefer tip up. As do I. However, even with tip up, if that blade comes out even a small bit, one stands a real chance of slicing one's finger when reaching down into the pocket. BUT....better a finger than one's balls! >;)
Charles Larson Yes, but (for rightys..reverse for SouthPaw) tip up facing the blade backside opening edge with the clip holding it in place means that chances of reaching into
EarlyMist basically if you're right handed, tip up blade backside facing right pocket is the lowest risk. If it opens it is facing away from you and will hopefully only tear a hole in your pocket. Tip down right facing same deal but there is a chance of Quadracep damage in a fall...even if only a glancing slice or maybe a full imbed into the muscle. ANYTHING facing tip in
..if accidentally opened in a pocket aims for some serious shit...including the Ball Sack, the Arteries on the inside of your inner leg (serious bleedout) or just generally...dont do it. Very unlikely...dont mean to be a buzzkill but if you have ever had a fall...and accident involving a car etc...it makes you rethink how to carry and which way you want that potentially life saving/life ending tool to be placed....while sitting a few inches away from your Dick. Right?
EarlyMist As I stated above.....I carry tip up. I have and will always pass on a folder that does not give me that option....unless the blade actually locks when folded as well. I have an old (made in the USA) Buck folder that locks in both positions. One of my favorite folders.

I just started carrying knives with me this past half year. After all my research I invested in a spyderco delica. Absolutely love the knife. Thin, light, grippy and amazing Japanese vg-10 steel, plus the thumb holes to help with opening the knife with gloves. I actually learned to sharpen knives free-hand by watching your instructional video, and I invested in an EZE-LAP 510. Just recently got a gift from my gf - spyderco sage 1. Absolutely amazing. I am now looking into purchasing a spyderco paramilitary 2 in the next 6 months. Keep up the great work guys!
