If I could only take one folder in the situation you described it would be the Cold Steel Rajah II.
It's incredibly strong, it can chop, it can pry, easy to sharpen, fast one handed deployment and it has a lot of reach.
It would be perfect for building shelters, wood processing, self-defense and you wouldn't have to worry about it failing in any way.

Since you mentioned prying with this knife, I would throw out any Spyderco folder because of the large thumb hole through the thickest part of the blade near the most stressed point on the blade and along the plunge line of the grind. That seems like an obvious potential point of failure.

  • @WilliamsKnifeLife
    @WilliamsKnifeLife 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Great narrowing down episode.👏 I know you based the selections on what you had in your collection. I would recommend you add some traditional pocket knives to your collection. It has a strong, simple mechanism that worked for the prior generations. They are simple, durable, reliable, and many have multiple blades. Throw a camp knife, or Scout knife into your pocket, & you have quite a few different things in a small package. In the same vein, a multi tool like the Leatherman wave would add more options. Even an old school Stockman had multiple blades, and it fits in your pocket. Some traditionals even come with a lockback, or liner lock. Yeah, they aren't huge, and most are not one handed opening,
but that's why you carry, or find a fixed blade knife for all the tough choirs. Yes I know fixed blades are another episode. A pocket knife will be with you when you bug out, if you remember to wear clothes 🤔, because it's already in your pocket. Barring the end of the world, the knife you would have in an emergency is the one you already have on you. Rarely do you get a chance, or much time to ponder over what knife to take. Look how long it took you to narrow down your collection to one knife. That's why people make up Bugout bags. Mrs. Complex, "Honey, come on, we gotta leave Now!"
"Hold on, I've almost narrowed it down to which Hinderer to leave behind. " 🤣
I know it's just a fun way to narrow down your collection to one knife. Super strength isn't needed in most pocket/folding knife situations. Knowing when to use a fixed blade, or some other tool, as opposed to pushing a pocket knife beyond its limit would be a more logical approach, rather than trying to get the toughest, strongest, one knife forever type of knife for an imaginary situation that never happens. Something that fits in your pocket, and can cut whatever you need it to cut without breaking down, or needing special tools like a torx bit, is all you need a pocket knife to do.
l will never be down to one knife as long as I am a free man. If that point ever comes to where I only have one knife, I will make another knife, or buy a knife if money still exists. ⚔

For a folder,I would probably go with a Cold Steel SR1 or a large or XL Cold Steel Recon 1(XHP Steel preferable). In a fixed blade, I would take a Miller Brothers knife (at least 7 inches in length) and a Katana sword with Zwear Pm Steel.

Fixed knives aside (there are actually are the first choice here) I'd take Cold Steel AD-15. It has adequate size, weight, durable enough blade and handle. The most important thing is its lock, which is super easy to clean and will still continue working no matter what. Socom is probably even more durable and better protected from dirt, but once gunk gets into the action you are doomed to fiddle with a ton of tiny torx screws. I once tried to disassemble some device with tiny screw heads, that were splashed with varnish. I must say, I won't trust my life to anything that cannot be cleaned with an application of force and a tiny help of small iron spike or nail.

MC, I would go with my Benchmade Osborne Proxy. I got on you for not including it in the best titanium flipper video and for all the same reasons, I would take the Proxy with me until the end. It is as close to a folding fix blade that I have seen.
It’s stout, I can baton with it and still do delicate work. It has a great blade length that makes it functional for so many tasks and still folds to a reasonable size. I have not found a better all-around knife.

The knowledge and skills of the person count for as much of the knife’s performance as its materials and construction. I can’t for the life of me remember the name of the video, or else I’d link it, but there’s a dude here on TH-cam who more or less starts society over from the beginning out in the woods using a Victoronox Huntsman, which is a $50 slip joint. He carves a baton and some wedges, then scores the top of a log he wants to split with the tiny saw. The baton and wedges do all of the heavy impact work needed to split the log. He creates rope out of roots, and tinder by peeling away bark. In almost every case he uses his keychain knife to create a larger, sturdier tool out of his surroundings which he then does his heavy work with.
There’s also the point that slip joint knives, made of inferior steels, were the universal folding EDC of all tradesmen for hundreds of years before the phrase “EDC” was ever first spoken or written. So I think pretty much any modern folding knife with even half-assed construction should do pretty well, so long as it had a good blade length and the person using it had training in survival.

  • @Deadtileyedie

The shaman, hinderer and socom would be a tough choice for me! I have the shaman s30v and two tone orange/carbon fiber manual socom in cts-204p (wish the inserts were like yours and on the scarab) and that would be a insanely hard choice but I would probably go with the shaman for the spydie hole alone. Lol. otfs get a bad rep for not being strong but I've found that with quality otfs they are extremely strong. My ultratech is one of my primary edc's and I've abused that thing. I do tree removal and was climbing, chipping and dragging brush and everything else and it actually got some bigger peices of saw dust in it and it failed a couple times. Even then I just kinda whipped it the rest of the way open. Now i carry my LUDT/spydercos if I think it's going to be a dirty day. It's tough and I've pushed it pretty hard and was surprised how good and strong it is. I would probably use my hydra single action otf(like a smaller halo) even more in a situation like that as it seems insanely strong and the spring tension is way stronger. so i for a otf that's what I would prefer.

Also saw a lot of Auto Strykers, TR3s, TR4s and the Gerber in those nice places. If ther spring breaks take it out and you gave a button lock.
Out of all the knives you had I'd do the Hinderer. That Spanto would do you much better than the Socom blade. You'd be amazed how often you'll use your knife for non knife stuff. I'd send you a pic if I had Instagram. Great and entertaining video though.

At 01: 50, my guess is the extreme upper left corner. Lets find out! If I were to chose one knife, it would be the Artisan Cutlery Osprey. Of course, I wouldn't chose one knife because I'd also have the CRKT Pilar for small tasks. Ever pick a splinter with a 4 inch cleaver? Neither have I. As it is...I carry the Osprey (in orange G10), a large Cold Steel Voyager that I (carefully) ground down to a 3.5 inch drop point, and the Pilar. From this collection though, I'd take the Sheepdog and Maxamet...hands down.
Edit: LOL! Rather amusing that my guess was the first one in the would-not-carry pile.
Edit 2: No way in hell would I use my knife as a pry bar or hammer. I'd have a mini pry bar and any solid object can be used as a hammer. A knife is for stabbing, slicing and carving...nothing else.
Edit 3: Even a light coat of oil that you get from the side of your nose or ear lobe (as disturbing as that sounds) would be enough to prevent corrosion on a D2 blade. Would it discolour from use? Oh, I'm sure of that. Would it actually rust? No, it would not and that's what really matters. Other than the fact that it's so wear resistant on the stone, D2 would be a fine blade steel for the apocalypse.
Edit 4: If you have a knife that has Torx fittings, you could always carry a small screwdriver kit with Torx tips in a pouch with your sharpening stone and for knife maintenance.

guess: Either the super freak, shaman, para 3, crooked river or the hinderer. possibly even the praxus
Edit: i forgot about the socom elite, that would have been one of my picks, also i am shocked at just how little trust u have in omega springs. Realy thought the freak would be your pick.

Liner lock !?!? You picked a liner lock for your apocalypse knife? Huh......
I just picked up the SOG Seal XR Flipper & even though it has an "AXIS" style lock I'd choose this knife !! I've never had an omega spring break on me yet & if it's such a huge problem why would Benchmade & other's choose to stay with the lock bar or "AXIS" lock?

That was painfully the right choice. The XM-24 is what my materialistic side wanted, but for the apocalypse, the Socom had to take it. Aside from the fact that to my knowledge, it’s the one that comes with more actual real life static proof (abuse videos that defy reason of resilience) that it’s gonna outlive your ability to be abused and still function perfect. Plus I’ve never seen a knife that had more of almost seeming like it’s alive when you go to open it. The smallest thumb nudge, not even a proper leveraged thumb flick, will cause the blade to rotate out as if it’s been waiting for that moment it’s whole life. Like “Here Sir!” 😂
Great video. It definitely vouched for your “I like him. He thinks like me, therefore he’s a genius” effect.

    Paused to predict the answer.
I would say its the XM-24, but that might be to obvious. The Waypoint can't rust, so that would be a good contender. But I'm going to make my guess the Shaman.

@@metal_complex well I was wrong but I came sorta close.
I love Microtech, definately a solid choice.
I love my LUDT and Ultratechs. I really want to love to new Socom Elites but I've personally had the worst luck with them. My auto socom elite had the spring break at 2 weeks old, of course microtech took care of me and fixed it. But my confidence was damaged.
My manual Socom elite came with a stripped out screw and terrible lock stick with like 80% lockup.
I know I've just been unlucky and I think about trying another one every couple weeks. There is so much I love about the Socom elite, the deployment is amazing, external locking lugs, beefy lock bar and great ergonomics. Plus its just dead sexy. And they've always honored my warranties. But two lemons in a row will sour any knife.

Cold Steel Trail Master in San Mai III! If it has to fold, then Espada XL... I think the Trail Master is more than capable of doing just about anything you need it to do. Including getting through zombie skull's with ease. 😁👌

I’ve been carrying the Super Freek on Frac jobs in west Texas for the last three years. It’s as close to the apocalypse as you can imagine. Endless dirt/ sand, chemicals, toxic produced water. I’ve cut through endless 12” tpu hoses, thick discharge hoses. Zero flaws.

If i were in the apocalypse, and i only had ONE knife, then i would treat it relatively carefully no matter what knife it was... The MKM Colvera Titanium was on sale earlier today, and i managed to grab the last one they had. I absolutely LOVE that blade shape, and as long as the ball bearings last, this may be the last folding knife i ever buy..! Some of the knives in this video looked really nice too - but $700 is OUT of my price range, LOL!
I also got the Leatherman Wave+ the other day, and it is of course not the "ultimate apocalypse knife", but with all those tools in such a small package, it may be the "ultimate apocalypse multitool". And it should last a really long time as long as it is not abused too much.
In case anyone wonders why i get these now... Yes, it is because of Putin. Im normally not a big knife guy, but if you count the Leatherman, i have bought 3 this last week, LOL! The last one is a big 22,5cm/8,85" Brusletto "Villmarka Stor" (Norwegian brand that has been making knives since 1896). So i think thats all the knives i need for an apocalypse 😂

    warning: this is for fun
if i had to chose i would get something that has good edge retension, not many parts so easy to fix if needed, good handle material like g-10 feels good on my hand and it is fast to open. so maby something like ti-lite or spyderco. just my opinion.
edit: forgot to say if ti-lite 6 inch version.

How are Triads looks different from lock backs?

    • @metal_complex
      @metal_complex  3 ปีที่แล้ว

The way it locks into place has 3 points of contact. While back locks are very strong and can withstand a large amount of force, the triad lock is definitely stronger, and requires more force to disengage. It's basically impossible to fail a triad lock with natural human force.

The knife i carry now would be my choice an its coldsteel spartan an my large g10 Espada they are what I carry because they are bomb proof if it was a knife I don't own it would be a AD10 so that said coldsteel is hard to beat in price an tuffness an far as liner lock knives suck had 2 fail on me an frame is a fancy liner I would take a button lock over frame an liner but I only know my experience as a vet an mechanic an ive destroyed a lot of knives but probably lost more bearing would depend on free floating or caged would never go with floating anyway thats my opinion I commented from middle of video out of table I would take shaman that spyderco is nice but expensive for my taste nice video idea
