    Subcon has been saved, but we didn't exactly have to do things the hard way. Yes, Super Mario Bros. 2 has a handful of warps and other skips to show off, so that's what this one is for. As opposed to the original SMB, this one doesn't feel as silly to do since there are quite a few of them to see.
    The one thing I will say is that I know there's a way to skip climbing up ladders to walk on the ceiling and skip a good chunk of certain levels that way. The thing is, that would be more in glitch territory than an honest shortcut, so I won't be covering it. Nope.

    Story Time: I had this weird idea about bringing a cursed key to the end of the level. All cursed keys are used in one way or another so I think in 1 - 2 you can use the Ninji Shortcut to escort the key to the end of the level. After much trial and error. Dropping the key at your highest point of a regular jump puts the key on the top of the mountain! So it is possible to bring a key to the end of a level. It was a very fun challenge and it might be possible with Peach using the knockback mechanic, but Luigi is your highest hope.

    im having a nostalgia wave rn and coming back to the smb series. its amazing they give u so much options for shortcuts, and give you available routes for playing certain characters in SMB2. jts as cool as finding rare treasure in a dungeon.

    I never knew there were warps in this one! I only knew the ones in 1 and 3

      You're welcome. I knew about this game's ones going in, but there are secrets and maps I'll look up before recording in other games just to make sure I can show them off.

      Ouch. I always thought that the world 4 warp vase that transports to world 6 was the most beneficial of the three warp zones. It spares me the torture of tackling the ridiculously challenging world 5. Maybe it's just me, but that world is disproportionately difficult relative to the others. The waterfall jump a thon in level 1 is just wrong, capped by its tantalizing mushroom trapped in the ceiling with mushroom stools (in case you feel like committing sabotage suicide directly after conquering the vast, platform deficient waterfall challenge to gain 1 extra hp to battle a fireball Birdo). 5-2 is probably the most player friendly obstacle course of w-5. The primarily vertical layout is no picnic, but it's at least a reasonable challenge. 5-3 is the contender for the most excruciating of the three. It's a puzzle oriented, claustrophobic layout, with plenty of cubby holes, some conveniently introduce the seemingly (initially)innocuous booby trapped urns, topped with occasionally useful mushroom stools. Of course, if you pick the stool up and move it shy guys rapidly ascend from the urn in staggering quantities (inspired by the mythical Pandoras Box booby trap). There is also a quantity of scattered Porcupos, the jabby little fellows that are among the few enemies that cannot be stood on and lifted up/thrown scattered throughout the 3 levels. I beat the game a few times, warping around that World 5, which seemed like a cruel joke at first after the relatively friendly terrain of the previous 4 worlds. But it really drove me crazy that I never battled/defeated Clawgrip and his Donkey Kong inspired rock heap from which he grabs and chucks rocks at you. He's still my favorite sub boss (second to big boss Wart, Mouser is a close second LOL). World 5 is a bit odd because it's an expanded, difficult challenge, it's a bit of a hybrid of worlds 3 and 7, and it's perhaps even more difficult than the two subsequent worlds that lead to the end of the game.

    I Know It's Gonna Sound Strange But These Games Were Funner Because Of Heightened Simplicity.

      I understand your premise, but I'm not sure I'd file World 5 under "heightened simplicity". For me, it's the unique enemy and boss cast, the more vertically oriented layouts, the fun design of the dungeons and pyramids, etc. It's a fun game if you are feeling bored with the more traditional oriented gameplay of the entire franchise and have fun battling the typically not intimidating enemies (though Beezos, Cobrats, Pansers, and Phantos provide unique attack methods that can make them potentially much more difficult than others), enjoying the bizarre landscapes of each world, and fighting a sequence of bosses that is much more inspired than the first games repetitive Bowsers that increase in difficulty with each level, or the more ambitious yet somewhat predictable return to Bowser reign via his 7 weird kids (I love that each is named after a rock star, aside from Morton. Morton Downey?). It's really the true anomaly of the franchise

    With that Ninji Jump in 3-3, you just need the Ninji on that platform that you threw it to. All 4 characters can pull that jump off, even Toad. But that Spark jump via a damage boost, AFAIK, can only be used by Luigi. But great show!

  • @somedudeinboston5835

    Missed a few. There's a way to jump off the chains near the top of some screens in 7-2 that lets you skip over a ton of Wart's castle. You can also apparently do this trick in 3-2, although because the Princess can fly it only saves time on the wall you have to bomb. Instead of running under the quicksand in 6-3, lure Pokey over with three hearts and use the trick where getting hit flings you in the air to go over the wall (or just use the super squat jump from his head).
    There's also some wrong-warp bugs that involve some precise timing: throwing an enemy to the bottom of a vine/ladder so it gets stuck in the ground, jumping on top of it precisely, picking it up so you drop halfway into the floor, and then pressing down climbs down through the floor and messes up some of the warping. Craziest one I saw was a speed-run where someone who intentionally got a game-over in 1-2, I think, then continued and did this trick on the first vine in 1-1, warping them to 1-3, then they did it again on one of the chains at the bottom of the first "indoors" portion of 1-3, which took them through the locked door... and then Mouser wasn't there at the end and it skipped right to the Bonus Chance.
    Best trick is not really a warp/shortcut, but when you get one of Clawgrip's rocks, super squat jump and throw it off the wall behind him. It returns and hits him 2-3 times, so it's possible to beat him collecting just 2 rocks.

      I don't generally do the glitch skips like with the chains you're talking about, just intended ones. That said, those are some interesting shortcuts!

    If you throw mushroom blocks on clouds in 3-1 shortcut you can make it with toad or Mario but it’s not easy

    I did not see it here but, I am positive that I remember that you could warp from levels 1 to 4 then to 7 in this game. I would have sworn that this is what I used to do to get to level 7-1 and to Wart's Castle quickly when I played this game as a kid in the 80's. I never remember having to go to level 6 at all to then backtrack to level 5 to get to level 7 because I hated level 6, that difficult sand world that I despised so much and sought to avoid; I only fought the Triclyde boss there once. I remember that once I found the warps I never played it without them. All of the other secrets and backdoors seen here I remember, though. Does anyone remember being able to perform that 4-to-7 warp, too, especially those with a true 80's Nintendo cart playing in the 80s like I was? I have this game on a modern mega cart and the first thing I did was go for that warp to 7 from 4 and low-and-behold I went to 6. So baffling to me. Maybe the game got tweaked later on or maybe mine was just special. Hmmm. I just do not remember it being like this, is all I am saying.

      you do 3-1 to 5-3 to 7, you avoid world 6 that way

  • @VanillaLimeCoke

    Awesome you found them all.
    Also though for 1-2 you can use princess from the flying carpet. You have to time it right though. Although supposedly if you really time it right any character can make it from the carpet (but you really you have to time it right also have it so you catch the carpet before taking off as it's going as far right as you can)

    • @UncalmChaos
      @UncalmChaos 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Or Luigi from the flying carpet. I only use Luigi. Only level I use toad is the 4-2 ice with the flying guys. He is easier to control through that area.

    hey you forgot the old super mario bros trick of jumping to the top of the dungeon and running over to the boss, which you can do in this game in the final stage via you jump off the ladder to get on top and run straight across to the boss

    1:47 You actually can make it over that pit with Mario and Toad if you throw the mushroom blocks onto the clouds, specifically the second one from the right. So they’re not as useless as this video makes them out to be. 🤷‍♂️

    • @Bean1227
      @Bean1227  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, the NES had a much more limited color palette. Thankfully, the gameplay is pretty much the same between the originals and All-Stars versions outside of some minor differences, and that's what matters most.

      Bean1227, well i do have an nes with the original smb2 which i played before, i chose to play the allstars version on the switch for the saving feature, it’s just fun to see the game in its original graphics again even if I originally played the og game long before, I guess my nostalgia failed me lol.
