I still use the tube because my depth perception is off looking lengthwise down the keyboard. But I think the direct blow like you do or the mouthpiece sounds better.

I prefer the short trumpet mouthpiece because it can be easily cleaned. The tube is uncomfortable for me and makes sharp staccato articulations difficult. To each their own!
