I've been riding Harleys since the mid sixties. Of all the bikes I've owned, the Evos were the lowest maintenance. Never got stranded by an Evo. Shovelheads on the other hand have left me on the side of the road more than once. I have a couple of Twin Cam bikes now that I ride most of the time. Although, I do still ride my Shovel from time to time. It is so much fun to ride. I'm in my 70s now and don't tell my wife but it tends to beat me up pretty bad these days.
I just recently bought a 1982 FLT shovelhead to add to my stable. It's been lowered, fat spoke 19" front wheel, later model saddle bags, 16" ape hangers, no fairing, and straight pipe fishtail dual exhaust and a custom dark green metal flake paint job. It does have a small primary leak, just a few drops almost unnoticeable. (I will fix this winter) Runs and it rides and sounds great all for $3,000 USD. There's many great deals to be found if you take your time and search. To me, a new Harley-Davidson is an EVO. Anything built afterward really doesn't interest me I'm 61 years old and kind of set in my ways. I still own my first big twin harley, a 1978 flh bobber/chopper I have a 1991 springer softtail and a 1992 electra glide ultra classic.
My grandfather passed during the years of Covid and left his 02 assembled fatboy behind, I’ve been trying my hardest to get it reliable but he definitely cut corners with this Frankenstein machine. In a way it adds a charm to it still. Proud to say that (despite me stripping the screws to the primary) I got it running solid enough to take my class and get my endorsement. Watching your vids only make me more hyped for that day to finally come❤
I am 83 years old and ride a 99 Softail Custom. Carb, air cooled, and simple. I started riding on a 42 Flat head 45 when I was 14, in 1955. That thing was tuff as nails. Actually, I started riding on a friends Whizzer motor bike when I was 8. My EVO powered Softail Custom is now 25 years old, but when I wash it, maybe twice a year, it looks as good as new. I do keep it garaged. I only have 67,000 on it though, and it has been trouble free for the most part. I changed out the inner cam brg, for peace of mind. Installed a Torrington full roller bearing. Other than that and general maintenance, I had one stator go bad. I love the simplicity of the EVO. I have no use for a radio. I just listen to the music of the drag pipes and watch the sun reflect off the head light. It is almost as comfortable as sitting in my Lazy Boy recliner with the pillow seat and pull back buck horn bars. IF I want to ride 75 or 80 down the interstate it will do just fine. But most of my riding is around the back roads where I live. I rode an Iron Head Sportster for 23 years and loved it also. The new computerized fuel injected bikes with a key fob like my Chevy makes no sense to me. Just my opinion. Everyone has one.
New scoot for my workhorse, Chopper with S&S evo for shorter F’ing off type stuff. If I only could have one, newer all day long! Folks like to reminisce but these M8’s are now super reliable and put out real good power with a simple drop in cam.
The sound of the older bikes is freakin awesome. My Dad bought a 1998 Dyna wide glide brand new for 18k USD and i remember he had to wait a few months for it. I think he sold it several years later for 18k. The newer ones definitely don't hold their value like that anymore, but i did pull the trigger on my first Harley a week and a half ago. Got a brand new 24 Heritage Softail with the 114. Awesome bike! Can't wait to get some better pipes on it.
I have a dyna Fat Bob (modified) and a BMW R1200RT. The beemer is a mile muncher with superb manners, luggage capacity and weather protection. However, if I'm going to France or Spain touring I always go on the dyna. Its more fun, I like the sound of it, the vibration and the looks it gets when its parked up and from people in cars as I fly past them. They let down their windows to listen to the boom of the Harley but barely notice when the beemer slides past them. Its all subjective and for me when I open my garage door I still feel like that little eight year kid seeing a Harley for the first time parked up outside a cafe in France. Its so evocative and makes me feel alive. Viva Harley!
As for rose coloured glasses we all want an old bike for multiple reasons but we sooooo enjoy the convenience of modern bikes. Having my pop teach me how to do a cork three spring clutch on a 38 norton , I fooking love my 22 indian chief but my soul still swells for an old boike of any flavour.

Old school Harleys look really cool - they're a bit small for big guys (but configure yours to fit you). However, expect to spend a lot of time having them fixed - air-aspirated Harleys require much more maintenance. They sound way better though.
@@Mikeysixkiller I didn't say they were complicated Mikey, just that they require more maintenance or tinkering to keep them running sweet. I'm 70 & still ride an '84 Shovelhead that I bought new. Plus an '01 Fatboy. While out riding yesterday I came across a number of newer Harleys. I had to ask myself the question, "why don't these guys just buy minivans & take out the windshields"?? To each their own I suppose...

Shovel sounds grouse and up it goes. I have a twin can carbie. Sounds great. Twin cam injected has more power but the sound is just a bit off. But. Love all my twin cams
I wouldn't trade one of my shovelheads for every twin cam and M8 Harley Davidson ever manufactured. EVO's are great bikes too, as long as they aren't fuel injected.

Im in a good spot with my 14 street glide. Wasn't that expensive. Has the rushmore package so it's convenient.. and a twin cam that still sounds good and has sufficient power. Probably gonna do a cam for a little more go.

There should always be a choice, one likes his mother, one likes his daughter, and another likes their dresses. It is the same with everything around us.
Your question of bikes waving to other bikes. I got myself a proper Mohawk. Yes a 1980s punk rock Mohawk. Yes I wear it up. Now that I have it NO ONE waves. Put that in your waving pipe.
Yeah how about that. It's been years since I had a kicker. They are fun when first or second kick does it, but the speed a starter turns that donk over takes a lot of shit out of the start.
Older is best and better - 4 speed, choke n carb, rigid frame, chain drive, not a fan of "efi" or belt drive.... my 1989 air cooled evo does have electric ignition rather than kick but has no other "tech"...no need for trickle feed to battery once I turn it off, it is off. No fob just a key, no alarm...just me & my eyes...and my axe....
New bikes have 3 ssues. One, over priced. Two, the M8 is basically what big cc Japanese cruisers were in the 90s and early 2000s. Harley is 20 years behind. Three, technology that can and will fail or harley will stop issuing updates for. Pros, power. Haha. Anyway I won't own anything newer than an evo. And in the states I can own 8 of them for the price of a new harley.
@OldNotDead-Club I had a highly modified Softail for 27 years, but it was a Softail, handled like a sack of potatoes (compared to my BMW S1000XR). Lots of hp, big cam, heads polished ported and flow benched. But it was always breaking down. I'm 66 now, and I want reliability, power, braking, and handling. Which is why I bought an XR. But I still ride my Electra Glide about 1/3 of the time.
@@OldNotDead-Club My dream bike used to be a CVO, but now it's the BMW M1000XR (205hp). Have you ridden a BMW lately? Not a GS, one with power, like my S1000XR?
the difference between an old skool hardtail and a modern harley is you won,t need a wheelchair cos of spinal damage by the time your 50 if you ride a new harley. lol oldskool is cool but not practical. for all you young guns.
I had a 2013 Fat Bob 103 , I hated it the seat was to wide , it idled to fast it ran to Hot and so on , My Evo is faster more reliable sounds better , My Evo and I have done over 280,000 kl together ,
Wrenchin building bikes makes sense the prices ov new new Harley's are a joke man it was nice ov harley davidson in Oz 2 do a deal with the government so we can't import newer bikes 2 build squire up dog act no wonder most people that know stay away from zo dealers old school rules

There should always be a choice, one likes his mother, one likes his daughter, and another likes their dresses. It is the same with everything around us.
Great point thank you
Your question of bikes waving to other bikes. I got myself a proper Mohawk. Yes a 1980s punk rock Mohawk. Yes I wear it up. Now that I have it NO ONE waves. Put that in your waving pipe.
Chopper looks cool but also looks super uncomfortable.
It was surprisingly much better than I thought, if it was mine I would only change the seat because I was falling off the back on acceleration
👍👍👍♥️
When you have a kick starter and choose to use the electric starter, you cannot claim to be old school.
Yeah how about that. It's been years since I had a kicker. They are fun when first or second kick does it, but the speed a starter turns that donk over takes a lot of shit out of the start.
Anyone calling EVO’s, even in a hard tail, old school, isn’t old school 😂😂😂
Evo fatboy all the way 😊
Very nice
Older is best and better - 4 speed, choke n carb, rigid frame, chain drive, not a fan of "efi" or belt drive.... my 1989 air cooled evo does have electric ignition rather than kick but has no other "tech"...no need for trickle feed to battery once I turn it off, it is off. No fob just a key, no alarm...just me & my eyes...and my axe....
The prices are on the decline. 5000.00 is average low.
Much more where I live as they are imports
New bikes have 3 ssues. One, over priced. Two, the M8 is basically what big cc Japanese cruisers were in the 90s and early 2000s. Harley is 20 years behind. Three, technology that can and will fail or harley will stop issuing updates for.
Pros, power. Haha.
Anyway I won't own anything newer than an evo. And in the states I can own 8 of them for the price of a new harley.
My back got sore just watching you ride that Evo chopper.
Lol it was actually better than I thought it would be
@OldNotDead-Club I had a highly modified Softail for 27 years, but it was a Softail, handled like a sack of potatoes (compared to my BMW S1000XR).
@@HawgRiderBC yes they are great but i started on this type of bike - HD's are slower but way more fun
Self confessed late model expert 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Late models are great lol
I was hoping you would include in your comparisons the next generation, the Livewires, not just old petrol bikes.
the difference between an old skool hardtail and a modern harley is you won,t need a wheelchair cos of spinal damage by the time your 50 if you ride a new harley. lol oldskool is cool but not practical. for all you young guns.
Lol, good point thanks
I had a 2013 Fat Bob 103 , I hated it the seat was to wide , it idled to fast it ran to Hot and so on , My Evo is faster more reliable sounds better , My Evo and I have done over 280,000 kl together ,
Boomer versus gen z
There really is no comparison
Shovels best f-*# the rest
nah they were just like the British bikes, bluddy Unreliable
EVOs Rule !
HAD A SHOVEL HARDTAIL . SHOULD KICK MY ASS FOR SELLING I BUILT THIS BIKE
In any case older bikes are cooler and if your a Real Men your also a Mechanic! Or you just a Hipster.
thanks
To bad they went WOKE 😂
Wrenchin building bikes makes sense the prices ov new new Harley's are a joke man it was nice ov harley davidson in Oz 2 do a deal with the government so we can't import newer bikes 2 build squire up dog act no wonder most people that know stay away from zo dealers old school rules
I just can’t get into Harley with the dei woke Taliban ceo. Sorry.
Be patient. Hope the brand doesn’t decline too much. Older bikes are the way to go, don’t know how far back, but get a Harley. Support your local bike shops.
@@Spike_6280 good call on supporting your local. Definitely a cause to get behind. As far as bikes go? I’m way too emotionally attached to my Harley. It’s honestly the best and funniest ride I’ve ever had.
You won't need to worry about eating healthy and exercising if you keep ripping around on bikes w/o front brakes.
Lol very true
Cool rides
👍👍👍♥️
