I am almost 50. I have been riding since I was 7, and I was also a competition motocross racer in my late teens and 20's, and yes, lots of crashes doing that, some injuries, mostly to my pride. I even wore a diamond 1 at one point. What I am saying is that I ride. It is in my blood. I took a few years off during some financial difficulty when I had to sell one of my bikes, but it bothered me not being on two wheels. It didn't take long, however, for me to get back in the saddle and start riding again, scooping up several bikes. I got back into the scene really fast, and forged great friendships with so many fantastic people. Now, my lady rides with me, my daughter who is in her teens rides too, and we all travel with great people and go all sorts of places. I put more miles on motorcycles than any car I have ever owned. I have absolutely zero intention of giving up motorcycling. Proper gear, good training, and practice will keep you safe, and the wind therapy, the friendships, and the adventures are priceless. I quit riding and sold half a dozen bikes and a ton of parts and metal when I got married to a woman with two kids. I began riding again when our daughter reached her teens and she came to love riding as much as I did. I quit again when my wife became bedridden with M.S. more than a decade ago, and got back on the bikes after she died. I hope to ride to the day I die, I've had several crashes over the decades since the early seventies well including a few in "cages". Life is inherently dangerous, "no one gets out alive" is an absolute fact, and the inherent risks on a bike are mitigated by the better view and maneuverability the bike offers. The iron horse still has a place in freedom for me. One of my bikes is less than two decades old, the rest range from twenty-five to eighty-two. They are all investments in freedom I've enjoyed since entering my teens in the early seventies.
I rode less this year than in 47 years of riding, but have had more close calls this year than any other year with motorists not obeying any semblance of driving civility & I am at a crossroads of weather to continue with something I have always loved. Most troubling was 3 encounters with motorists exiting driveways without stopping, at speed, point blank pullouts. Last encounter I was injured. Bike ok. Ride safe. I do & it saved me every time.
People these days have absolutely no respect for life of others. They''ll glad risk your life to avoid waiting the five seconds it would take for you to be past them. It's insane. Zero concern, zero remorse.
I live in Colorado Springs. The speeds and general BS on the roads are keeping me sane enough to not ride again. Seems like its almost daily the I read about a MC accident in CS. I had over 50 years of accident free riding
I lost my leg in 2018 while on my harley because of an old lady running her stop sign. 9 months after I finally got back on my harley and have been riding ever since. Even rode from California to Sturgis south Dakota in 2020 and 2021. My name is Donny and even if I had no legs I'd still ride. Don't quit doing what you love in this life. I was in a head on collision with a Ford explorer at about 50 mph last year. I had to get another bike. I bought a road king a couple months ago. Love it.

Stopped and restarted riding for all the reasons you talked about. 70 years old now and been riding off and on for over 50 years now. Riding is now strictly hobby so I ride when I want as I want. Picking and chosing when I ride makes it much safer. Or so it seems.... I'll stop when I can't physically do it anymore.
I'm 67 next month and I hope to still be riding to the end. I've always considered it "the iron horse", and should've been a cowboy syndrome. Been out on an old Triumph with my niece most recently and I'm building a bike for her right now, and old one early sixties.

The motorcycle hobby is getting much more expensive than when I started riding. Because of this I don't ride as much as I used to. Parts and maintenance cost so much now that I no longer daily ride. I mostly save the bike for planned motorcycle trips and special rides.
I almost stopped after my second accident was more serious than the first. I thought about it a lot while on the mend but is such a big part of my life that I got back on it, scared at first I won't lie but I'm back.
I'm still riding at 76 but I'm very selective where I ride. I have an F3 Spyder and a Triumph America LT. I've been since I was 14 and have always put my brain in gear first before riding. Thank God I've never been in an accident.
With urban sprawl and congestion a lot of our roads are not motorcycle friendly. People don’t find enjoyment in riding in the daily rat race. Not to mention the risk of distracted drivers like you mentioned.
I’m 73. Rode my first bike at 4 yo, as a passenger. Started riding at 17 and aside from a few years here or there, I’ve ridden since 1968. I’m considering downsizing from an Ultra Classic, to an adventure bike. Lighter and far more versatile, with off-road capabilities. My wife quit riding with me after knee replacement. If she damaged one, she could lose a leg. So I’ve got an awesome ‘07 CVO Ultra, with only about 5k on an awesome new crank up build. I’m enjoying it, and have had trouble parting with it.
Rode and raced dirt bikes since I was 9yrs old. Rode friends street bikes on occasion while living in Detroit and in Atlanta (yeah, crazy right?). Now at 60 made the decision to buy my own. I bought a 2010 pearl yellow Honda Goldwing. Probably not the bike I should’ve bought but I’m loving it. Took my courses and still taking advanced courses. I could have bought a smaller/lighter bike but I’m loving my Goldwing. I’m just taking my time and enjoying each and every ride. It’s a freedom like no other when I ride. I’ll never give that up as long as there is breath in my body. Ride to live and live to ride. Be safe everyone.

I rode from my late teens until my late 20's when I started a family. I quit riding for several years simply because my budget couldn't accommodate my family's needs and still afford my hobby. Now my kids are close to grown and I have the means to enjoy my hobby again.
I remember the second I had that one thought. I had just rode up and down the coast of Maine. Standing there filling my gas tank to make it home. I stood there and shook. “ I’m going to be a Dad”
I was off my bike for 8 months because of an accident. Not in the hospital but a week. I was in the ambulance trying to remember what had happened. I considered not riding anymore, for about 10 seconds. I thought what the hell else is there to do? 2 hours later I was ordering parts to fix my old Harley. Wife says why are you ordering parts? You can’t work on it yet. I told her it would make me feel better to know I have the parts to fix my bike. She said OK. 2 weeks later I walked my buddy thru making that old Harley run. 4 months later I bought my new one and waited 4 moths to ride it. I don’t have a car registered in my name.
I got bit by the harley bug when I was maybe 7 or 8,my ex neighbors brother had a chopped harley and he would take me for a ride once in a while and from then on I knew I would own a harley someday,it took until I was 35 to be able to afford one but I did it and paid it off which is a great feeling, I still have that bike and I rode the balls off it when I lived in my home state of CT,it now has over 160 k on the clock,I’ve owned 3 other harleys besides that one but ever since I moved to NC,the way people drive down here literally scares the 💩 out of me because I almost got killed twice last year and let’s just say that had I not been hyper vigilant about my surroundings and checking my mirrors constantly, I probably wouldn’t be typing this right now,especially after some asshole came hammering up on me,swerving in and out of traffic doing about 90 on I-40,it’s just starting to take a lot of the fun out of it for me, I used to ride pretty much every day in CT but now I think it’s probably been a couple months since I rode,really not much fun in it anymore if I have to be worried about some asshole pulling out in front of me or hitting me from behind because they’re too busy looking down at their phones,it’s unfortunate because it’s in my blood too but it just doesn’t feel worth the risk anymore.
The wife and kid is the reason I stopped. Getting pressure due to you have a baby now no room for a carseat. Then 3 years later she left took the kid and hit me with the child support now can't afford now
Sorry to hear that man. My dad’s been there twice. I’m 27 now. I’ll never get married bc of that. No one’s taking my hard earned money and my track days away from me. I also don’t want kids. That’s just me. Trying to learn from my dad’s mistakes.
I went down last Thursday night. Broken toe, bruised lung, 4 broken ribs, and a 4 day stint in hospital and I'm already itching to ride again. Physically not being able to reach my bars, and being dosed up to my eyeballs on opiates is all that's stopping me getting back on 2 wheels now. Hopefully it won't be more than a few weeks and I'll be back out there. Stay safe out there brothers and sisters. 🤘
I'm 75 and gave my last motorcycle to a friend after my back surgery 7 years ago thinking that I wasn't able to ride anymore. Well guess what? I'm feeling good and want to ride again, but since I'm not working (and can't find a good paying job at my age. Walmart? Nah) I'm really struggling to find a way to buy a used bike. I test rode the Indian models a few weeks ago and boy, did that feel good! It seems that every time I think that I can buy a good used motorcycle, something pops up to take that money away. This year it's the house needing paint. Last year was new carpet for upstairs plus a new water heater etc. etc. etc. I'm getting desperate!
I'm with you. Back surgery 5 years ago. Stopped riding after more than 50 years. Look at something in the 500-650cc range. I may have to go to a Can-Am, see if I can attach a walker.

I have been riding since 1985. I have logged over 1 million kilometres. I have never thought that I was putting my life in danger. Accidents have happened in the early years but nothing serious 10:11 . For most of my time riding there wasn’t any armoured gear. Using good sense will keep you alive. Defensive riding should keep you alive and healthy. I am now 68 and hope to keep riding into my 70s.
I live in AZ. I ride, I don't lane split, and it is legal here. My reason for not splitting etc.... The drivers in this area area some of the worst I have ever seen. Cars change lanes and never look, they swerve back and forth recklessly. And like you said... they area on their phones.... at red-lights, green lights while driving... yes, I said green lights. Very frustrating to sit at a green light. I am a driver, a professional driver and they make my days long. Motorcyclist swerve in and out of traffic too. They act like they are on a raceway and they are some kind of Superbiker. No consideration for others on the road. You know, they are irritating people
Yeah, Lane filtering where I live in Salt Lake City is an amazing convenience for getting through stopped traffic. But not on the freeway. Legal fingering is on 45 mph or less roads.
I started riding in my late 20's. I had a stroke & lost my DL. But, I had already taken 2 classes on riding. I only needed 1 more class to be an Instructor.. The TX DMV wouldn't take my previous paperwork for those 2 classes that I took when I got my DL back! I've since lost everything during Hurricane Beryl in TX & just moved to Colorado Springs. Hoping to find a bike up here & re-take those classes for my M endorsement.
I got in a bad wreck in 2009 I had major back surgery in 2019 from that wreck it didn't go well. I'm 67 started riding at 15 people in car's today are so distracted I am at the point that I need to move to a rural area to be able relax when I ride. And ya I'm from the Charleston SC area
There is also the problem with immigrant drivers who come here with poor driving habits, have no insurance or even licenses sometimes and in many cases are here illegally. When the get into an accident they flee to their home countries and are never held accountable. So, you as the victim, you have to burden the entire mess yourself.
I’m an RT in a level one trauma center and a 70 bed ICU. I’ve been riding since before I can remember and currently have an old harley fxdx on a trickle charger in my garage. Haven’t registered it for a few years and don’t intend to until my son is out of the house. Riding is a game of roulette. I’ve seen and treated and “pulled the plug” on a lot of patients from all skill levels who all did the right thing and were killed by the person on 4wheels. I’ll ride again when my son is out on his own in 6ish years.
Gear is definitely a cost most people don’t estimate accurately. Your typical serious, safe rider is wearing hundreds if not thousands of dollars in protective equipment whether they’re on a cruiser or a sport bike.
$1000 is a good aim for costs if you get a good deal on gear. Helmet, gloves, jacket, boots, pants. Probably average $200 per piece on to have decent gear. Some people only wear a helmet, and I guess that's better than nothing
I am 68 and been riding since I was 17 and so has my wife. We have two Indians. The unreliability of those two bikes and major recalls some of which include break failure make going for a ride stressfull. We dont know what is gona fail and if we will get home. To us why bother riding anymore when things have gone down hill so badly. The only thing that may keep us riding is we also have a 98 Honda Blackbird. The drama free Honda experiance is what we need to enjoy riding.
Well, I do spend a fair bit of time going around cones in parking lots but I am also committed to doing at least one high level course a year. My choice of course the past several years is California SuperBike. Consistently riding about15 to 17,000km a year. Education and training is certainly a key component keeping me on two wheels. And yes, staying in touch and being part of the mc company is also important to me. Btw just turned 70 a month ago. No intention of leaving the sport. 😊
I ride just me and my wife most of the time. We both have our own bikes I like it that way. No one to get in our way. Sometimes I don't mind doing some benefit rides, mostly just us
The biggest reason that he didnt talk about is the cost! Harleys are expensive to buy and to maintain and thats the number 1 reason most people quit riding now
I'm 60 now, been riding since 16. When we had kids my wife stopped riding with me I kept going, never stopped, had 3 to 4 bikes on and off till now. What's scaring me now is the lousy way people drive. I'm in rural PA. Can't go 5 miles without seeing something stupid. Phones, alcohol, drugs, Can't drive, don't care...All at once, What is it? I've done over 250k miles on 2 wheels. My last years coming scare me the most. I WANT to ride, but being paranoid takes the fun out of it.😡
I did it to get to school. I started riding to college on an 80cc honda elite scooter. Scholarship w 1000$ in the pocket can't recommend the lack of gear tho, learned in a hail storm sweatshirt and pants was not enough
I still ride at 65 yrs.I own 2 big bores, one of which is a HD Fatboy, the other a big bad Yamaha. My only transportation as a kid in high school was a Honda enduro ( they are called duel sports today) anyway I had a bad accident in high school and came damn close to being killed and I jumped right back on and kept going. Not sure that would happen today at my age but the experience I have now in safely riding was simply not there in high school and contributed greatly to my accident in the first place. How long will I continue to ride? Who knows. I really don’t think about it. I do however believe that the introduction of hand held devices have had a very negative effect on Motorcycling and it’s understandable. Riding safely today requires the highest state of situational awareness in all 360 degrees. Enjoying your ride is not the same as “Joy Riding “, I don’t joy ride because it takes away from your attention. I also minimize night riding. Night riding is simply not safe. Visibility to road hazard’s and nocturnal creatures wondering out into the road are also a huge threat. Wanna take a long road trip? Simply adjust your travel time to daylight hours. That’s how I roll.
Some people are just not smart enough to ride a motorcycle. Let alone a car. They constantly drop and wreck. Then they don't have the money to fix it. All the while ignoring important maintenance items which results in a catastrophic mechanical failure. Now they're stuck with a broke down bike and massive payments.
Definitely road conditions have changed the driver's today are under extreme conditions to survive this economy, very little things set off anyone today. I usually enjoy working on my older Harley alot and when I ride I'll find a car to stay around and use them as a block for possible issues, im not in hurry ever. Now winter is almost here. It's time to upgrade and improve things..
When you add in the high cost of frequent tire replacement on a motorbike, the advantages of higher fuel economy disappear. When you add in the extra time it takes to don and doff raingear, leather, helmets, and boots, the speed advantage of a motorcycle versus a car goes away too.
I am in my 60's now and don't really have many people to ride with, boring riding alone, I don't ride that much anymore. Sold my Harley and am just looking for a cheap bike to have around so i can ride when I feel like it.
Reasons for stopping make sense here. But getting new riders is pretty tough when a good chunk of riders in public are straight up douchebags or just dont want to be bothered with. I went to a Harley dealer years ago to get info and insight. Felt like it was a problem for everyone in there just because I didn't "fit the look". I even knew if i walked out with one it'd be the iron 883 for obvious reasons. Its not as inclusive as everyone online wants to think it is. Ridiculous how annoying and close minded the older crowd is to newer riders.
Im 55, been riding since I was 6. Im giving it up. I lost my shifter leg 2 years ago. I put a hand shifter on my 2017 Ultra but as I get older Im finding it harder to hold the bike up. (my other leg has issues as well) I considered buying a smaller bike and with BMW KTM and Yamaha offering automatics for 2025 I was tempted. That said I really dont ride much anymore, the cost of bikes nowadays, and the general public doesn't pay attention on the roads these days so its just not worth it. As much as I hate to do it, I think I'm done
At 67 i was almost thrown 30ft at a 4way intersection near Sturgis w.out a helmet. If i had lived? My swerving and the car driver jamming his brakes...riding since 1990..my 2 80yr old friends didnt ride this 2024 summer I still ride...but

One of the things that hurts the most, is my hips because of the forward controllers on my Softail. I wish I could just get normal controllers, but apparently they are made. Which means I have to sell my bike buy another.

Where I live barely anybody is from America and I find their driving incredibly dangerous. They have no respect for our culture and driving and safety and proper use of a car is part of our culture.
@ I live in a NYC suburb, believe me immigrants are most of the problem lol there is absolutely no directional use with them and they stop, pull over and make turns that are completely foreign to my 43 years of car driving and almost 30 years of motorcycling. I wanted to take a short spin around town today and after an incident that happened in my car yesterday I just said forget it, I’ll take the bike out when I plan out a longer ride. I’m getting real discouraged lately.
I think most of people quitting has to do with the inability to learn more skills whether they want to admit it or not. People get lazy and stop practicing safety drills and skill riding. They stop taking classes or never take them. Without getting better people lose the drive to get out and ride. Getting better, learning more skills, and taking classes will allow you to avoid 98% of accidents. After learning this everything else becomes an excuse
It’s really easy keep people from texting on their phones. iPhones have an option that disables them while in motion via gps tracking. All they have to do is make that mandatory, phones off unless connected to a Bluetooth or headset.
Costs. Best to buy a machine you can afford and easily maintain. An 883 is nice. Horsepower is great when you can afford it. But motoring should be to be enjoyed for ones own sake, never to impress anyone or to be part of a pack. Sensible driving .
The instructor of my very class/lesson told me every rider goes down at least twice. Thankfully, my dips were not serious and served only to reinforce my respect for the ride, and the need to further understand and enhance my riding skills set. Practice with your riding skills go a long way toward preserving your life.
Not true at all. Ride defensively at all times and you can be safe for a lifetime of riding. Disregard this negative viewpoint. Not all riders crash. Not even close.
@ora33060 it's a relative term. Not every downed bike is a "crash." Even a slow speed (5 mph) loss of control and tip-over counts in that scenario. While it doesn't appy to every single rider, I'd bet it's surprisingly higher than you think.
Try to find a used motorcycle in NM It's a state full of short guys. Every used bike is a cruiser or dirt squirter. If strangers call you Lurch or Wookie, y don't want your knees as high as your ears.
It's common sense. You sell your motorcycle and buy a car when you get a family. You sell your motorcycle and buy a car when you two weeks in a row meet an opposing van sliding sideways towards you in your lane in the winter. It's not fear. It's simply being responsible. When the kids have moved out and are established you may sell your car and get a motorcycle again. You should try exercising a bit. The camera cannot keep your face and your belly in focus at the same time. It oscillates between them.
I would like to know why someone would buy a motorcycle, then not ride. I regularly find deals on places like Facebook Marketplace of people who put maybe a couple of thousand miles on a bike, if that, then try to sell it. I found one listing of a girl who bought an MT03, rode it home, then decided to sell it. Literally the only miles on it is her ride from the dealership to her house. How does the phenomenon happen?
Because people get swept up in the excitement of buying a motorcycle, but then get buyer's remorse or they are scared to ride it. Most of the times they get talked into buying a bike by a friend, family member, or even a smooth talking salesperson. Or they buy with the intention of riding, but then other priorities take center stage, cutting short their availability so the bike just sits in the garage for weeks or months. So many different circumstances.
@@robertocojones4471 - rumor has it he went on his first ride, scared to death, dropped it when he got home in his driveway and that was it! He sold it to the dealer he bought it from and I bought it from them.
The whole marriage/child time to settle down things drives me absolutely nuts , anytime I hear someone say yaaaahhhh I used to ride but it scared the misses so I gave it up 🙄 stfu you wasn’t about it to begin with!
With the way people are today they don’t pay attention when they drive. They drive drunk or they drive on drugs. They’re on their cell phones watching videos texting Lord knows why they don’t pay attention.
Lost the passion due to too much traffic, drivers texting, can’t wear casual cloths, can’t share the experience with more then two people, (traded for a Tritoon)…..other then an occasional long road trip, it became just another ride to the bar for a sandwich/beer. Getting caught in the rain. I’m 64 and gave up my ultra 5 yrs ago, I dont miss it. Now when a bike pulls along me, I remind myself that I’m glad I grew out of it.
So family is no excuse to quit riding motorcycles. I understand that sometimes you’re not gonna be able to because if you have a baby, you probably can’t put it on the back of the motorcycle. OK but yeah if you ride safely and responsibly and wear all the proper gear, you’re still pretty damn safe, especially if you ride with good road strategy and road skills so yeah having a family is a zero excuse for quitting riding motorcycles altogether, but riding less when you have to transport the baby around totally understandable and if you’re that worried about it, freaking get a life insurance policyyou should have one anyway if you have any dependence, you need to have life insurance it’s as simple as that get it and then live your life. Just be smart about it. And you shouldn’t have to ask yourself what am I gonna do if I’m out of work for six months well that’s what the six month emergency fund is for and the three month emergency fund on top of that that shouldn’t even be a question if you were not financially ready to have kids, don’t have them. It’s very simple.
OK, so my insurance is $99 a year for my motorcycle so I don’t have collision because my motorcycle is not worth a lot of money but still it doesn’t have to be expensive OK and you should never be making payments on a motorcycle anyway you should buy it all at once and payment should never be a thing except for the insurancethat same thing goes for cars. You should never have car payments. It’s a terrible idea if you can’t buy it all at once then that means you cannot afford it.
When the courts penalize drivers for hitting bikes in a more aggressive manor , then it will be safer for older riders to survive !!! Triple the points and fines for hitting a biker, accidents will happen less ! Todays society will only behave if the penalty exceeds the behavior !!!!! Nothing else will work, period !!!! Bikers can only do so much, big fines and restitution is in order $$$$$$$$$ Everything else is silly !!!
OK riding motorcycles does not have to be expensive. It can be if you choose for it to be that way or if you want it to be expensive my motorcycle cost me $3300 with 9 miles on it. I have put over 10,000 miles on it by this point in a little over a year insurance is cheap maintenance is also very inexpensive now I do have to change out parts More often because the parts are small OK but it’s not expensive. OK and registration is very cheap now I didn’t cheap out on the gear. My helmet was almost a $600 helmet, but it’s light comfortable and it’s supposed to be very good at its job if I ever have to test out hopefully not Now the other gear cost a little bit of money. I didn’t cheap out on it though right but that year is gonna last me quite some time and I get 75 200 miles per gallon with the cheapest gasoline OK my car gets 25 miles per gallon and I haven’t saved enough money on gas yet to pay for the cost of just buying the motorcycle but I will get there so yeah cycling doesn’t have to be expensive. OK on the other hand there’s nothing wrong with riding an expensive motorcycle. It’s perfectly fine just as long as you can afford it so I wanted to get into it with the most reliable motorcycle. I could find at the best price and I think I did a good job of itnow my motorcycle is small but it gets me anywhere. I need to go so it works.

I am almost 50. I have been riding since I was 7, and I was also a competition motocross racer in my late teens and 20's, and yes, lots of crashes doing that, some injuries, mostly to my pride. I even wore a diamond 1 at one point. What I am saying is that I ride. It is in my blood. I took a few years off during some financial difficulty when I had to sell one of my bikes, but it bothered me not being on two wheels. It didn't take long, however, for me to get back in the saddle and start riding again, scooping up several bikes. I got back into the scene really fast, and forged great friendships with so many fantastic people. Now, my lady rides with me, my daughter who is in her teens rides too, and we all travel with great people and go all sorts of places. I put more miles on motorcycles than any car I have ever owned. I have absolutely zero intention of giving up motorcycling. Proper gear, good training, and practice will keep you safe, and the wind therapy, the friendships, and the adventures are priceless. I quit riding and sold half a dozen bikes and a ton of parts and metal when I got married to a woman with two kids. I began riding again when our daughter reached her teens and she came to love riding as much as I did. I quit again when my wife became bedridden with M.S. more than a decade ago, and got back on the bikes after she died. I hope to ride to the day I die, I've had several crashes over the decades since the early seventies well including a few in "cages". Life is inherently dangerous, "no one gets out alive" is an absolute fact, and the inherent risks on a bike are mitigated by the better view and maneuverability the bike offers. The iron horse still has a place in freedom for me. One of my bikes is less than two decades old, the rest range from twenty-five to eighty-two. They are all investments in freedom I've enjoyed since entering my teens in the early seventies.
I rode less this year than in 47 years of riding, but have had more close calls this year than any other year with motorists not obeying any semblance of driving civility & I am at a crossroads of weather to continue with something I have always loved. Most troubling was 3 encounters with motorists exiting driveways without stopping, at speed, point blank pullouts. Last encounter I was injured. Bike ok. Ride safe. I do & it saved me every time.
People these days have absolutely no respect for life of others. They''ll glad risk your life to avoid waiting the five seconds it would take for you to be past them. It's insane. Zero concern, zero remorse.
Get better at defensive driving and add some extra lights
I live in Colorado Springs. The speeds and general BS on the roads are keeping me sane enough to not ride again. Seems like its almost daily the I read about a MC accident in CS. I had over 50 years of accident free riding
All the stoners, the highly caffeinated coffee drinkers, and the speeding tailgating idiots. It is scary.
I lost my leg in 2018 while on my harley because of an old lady running her stop sign. 9 months after I finally got back on my harley and have been riding ever since. Even rode from California to Sturgis south Dakota in 2020 and 2021. My name is Donny and even if I had no legs I'd still ride. Don't quit doing what you love in this life. I'm 31 now lost my leg when I was 25. Motorcycles truly give the most freedom
I was in a head on collision with a Ford explorer at about 50 mph last year. I had to get another bike. I bought a road king a couple months ago. Love it.
been riding street 48 years and still hit a parking lot couple times a week its fun and keeps me sharp at 64 soon to be 65! always learning!

Stopped and restarted riding for all the reasons you talked about. 70 years old now and been riding off and on for over 50 years now. Riding is now strictly hobby so I ride when I want as I want. Picking and chosing when I ride makes it much safer. Or so it seems.... I'll stop when I can't physically do it anymore.
I'm 67 next month and I hope to still be riding to the end. I've always considered it "the iron horse", and should've been a cowboy syndrome. Been out on an old Triumph with my niece most recently and I'm building a bike for her right now, and old one early sixties.

The motorcycle hobby is getting much more expensive than when I started riding. Because of this I don't ride as much as I used to. Parts and maintenance cost so much now that I no longer daily ride. I mostly save the bike for planned motorcycle trips and special rides.
Invest in GAP .. make sure that is part of the deal
I almost stopped after my second accident was more serious than the first. I thought about it a lot while on the mend but is such a big part of my life that I got back on it, scared at first I won't lie but I'm back.
I'm still riding at 76 but I'm very selective where I ride. I have an F3 Spyder and a Triumph America LT. I've been since I was 14 and have always put my brain in gear first before riding. Thank God I've never been in an accident.
With urban sprawl and congestion a lot of our roads are not motorcycle friendly. People don’t find enjoyment in riding in the daily rat race. Not to mention the risk of distracted drivers like you mentioned.
I’m 73.
Rode my first bike at 4 yo, as a passenger. Started riding at 17 and aside from a few years here or there, I’ve ridden since 1968.
I’m considering downsizing from an Ultra Classic, to an adventure bike. Lighter and far more versatile, with off-road capabilities.
My wife quit riding with me after knee replacement. If she damaged one, she could lose a leg.
So I’ve got an awesome ‘07 CVO Ultra, with only about 5k on an awesome new crank up build. I’m enjoying it, and have had trouble parting with it.
Rode and raced dirt bikes since I was 9yrs old. Rode friends street bikes on occasion while living in Detroit and in Atlanta (yeah, crazy right?). Now at 60 made the decision to buy my own. I bought a 2010 pearl yellow Honda Goldwing. Probably not the bike I should’ve bought but I’m loving it. Took my courses and still taking advanced courses. I could have bought a smaller/lighter bike but I’m loving my Goldwing. I’m just taking my time and enjoying each and every ride. It’s a freedom like no other when I ride. I’ll never give that up as long as there is breath in my body. Ride to live and live to ride.

I rode from my late teens until my late 20's when I started a family. I quit riding for several years simply because my budget couldn't accommodate my family's needs and still afford my hobby. Now my kids are close to grown and I have the means to enjoy my hobby again.
I came back to riding last year after taking a 34 year break LOL. Glad I came back before I croak off love the feel of the wind again!
I remember the second I had that one thought. I had just rode up and down the coast of Maine. Standing there filling my gas tank to make it home. I stood there and shook. “ I’m going to be a Dad”
I was off my bike for 8 months because of an accident. Not in the hospital but a week. I was in the ambulance trying to remember what had happened. I considered not riding anymore, for about 10 seconds. I thought what the hell else is there to do? 2 hours later I was ordering parts to fix my old Harley. Wife says why are you ordering parts? You can’t work on it yet. I told her it would make me feel better to know I have the parts to fix my bike. She said OK. 2 weeks later I walked my buddy thru making that old Harley run. 4 months later I bought my new one and waited 4 moths to ride it. I don’t have a car registered in my name.
67 years old .Had a break for a few years. Bought a new indian scout, still love riding. Just enjoy it more now.
I got bit by the harley bug when I was maybe 7 or 8,my ex neighbors brother had a chopped harley and he would take me for a ride once in a while and from then on I knew I would own a harley someday,it took until I was 35 to be able to afford one but I did it and paid it off which is a great feeling, I still have that bike and I rode the balls off it when I lived in my home state of CT,it now has over 160 k on the clock,I’ve owned 3 other harleys besides that one but ever since I moved to NC,the way people drive down here literally scares the 💩 out of me because I almost got killed twice last year and let’s just say that had I not been hyper vigilant about my surroundings and checking my mirrors constantly, I probably wouldn’t be typing this right now,especially after some asshole came hammering up on me,swerving in and out of traffic doing about 90 on I-40,it’s just starting to take a lot of the fun out of it for me, I used to ride pretty much every day in CT but now I think it’s probably been a couple months since I rode,really not much fun in it anymore if I have to be worried about some asshole pulling out in front of me or hitting me from behind because they’re too busy looking down at their phones,it’s unfortunate because it’s in my blood too but it just doesn’t feel worth the risk anymore.

The wife and kid is the reason I stopped. Getting pressure due to you have a baby now no room for a carseat. Then 3 years later she left took the kid and hit me with the child support now can't afford now

Sorry to hear that man. My dad’s been there twice. I’m 27 now. I’ll never get married bc of that. No one’s taking my hard earned money and my track days away from me. I also don’t want kids. That’s just me. Trying to learn from my dad’s mistakes.

I went down last Thursday night. Broken toe, bruised lung, 4 broken ribs, and a 4 day stint in hospital and I'm already itching to ride again. Physically not being able to reach my bars, and being dosed up to my eyeballs on opiates is all that's stopping me getting back on 2 wheels now. Hopefully it won't be more than a few weeks and I'll be back out there.

I'm 75 and gave my last motorcycle to a friend after my back surgery 7 years ago thinking that I wasn't able to ride anymore. Well guess what? I'm feeling good and want to ride again, but since I'm not working (and can't find a good paying job at my age. Walmart? Nah) I'm really struggling to find a way to buy a used bike. I test rode the Indian models a few weeks ago and boy, did that feel good! It seems that every time I think that I can buy a good used motorcycle, something pops up to take that money away. This year it's the house needing paint. Last year was new carpet for upstairs plus a new water heater etc. etc. etc. I'm getting desperate!
Your problem is test riding a $12000 Indian, and not a used 250 eliminator 😂
I'm with you. Back surgery 5 years ago. Stopped riding after more than 50 years. Look at something in the 500-650cc range. I may have to go to a Can-Am, see if I can attach a walker.

I have been riding since 1985. I have logged over 1 million kilometres. I have never thought that I was putting my life in danger. Accidents have happened in the early years but nothing serious 10:11 . For most of my time riding there wasn’t any armoured gear. Using good sense will keep you alive. Defensive riding should keep you alive and healthy. I am now 68 and hope to keep riding into my 70s.

Tennessee has passed a law that if traffic is under 25mph, motorcycles can hit the shoulder/ emergency lane to go around traffic.
I live in AZ. I ride, I don't lane split, and it is legal here. My reason for not splitting etc....
The drivers in this area area some of the worst I have ever seen. Cars change lanes and never look, they swerve back and forth recklessly. And like you said... they area on their phones.... at red-lights, green lights while driving... yes, I said green lights. Very frustrating to sit at a green light. I am a driver, a professional driver and they make my days long.
Motorcyclist swerve in and out of traffic too. They act like they are on a raceway and they are some kind of Superbiker. No consideration for others on the road.

Lane splitting in AZ is not legal. Lane filtering is. There is a big difference!
Yeah, Lane filtering where I live in Salt Lake City is an amazing convenience for getting through stopped traffic. But not on the freeway. Legal fingering is on 45 mph or less roads.
I started riding in my late 20's. I had a stroke & lost my DL. But, I had already taken 2 classes on riding.
I only needed 1 more class to be an Instructor.. The TX DMV wouldn't take my previous paperwork for those 2 classes that I took when I got my DL back!
I've since lost everything during Hurricane Beryl in TX & just moved to Colorado Springs.
Hoping to find a bike up here & re-take those classes for my M endorsement.
I got in a bad wreck in 2009 I had major back surgery in 2019 from that wreck it didn't go well. I'm 67 started riding at 15 people in car's today are so distracted I am at the point that I need to move to a rural area to be able relax when I ride. And ya I'm from the Charleston SC area

There is also the problem with immigrant drivers who come here with poor driving habits, have no insurance or even licenses sometimes and in many cases are here illegally. When the get into an accident they flee to their home countries and are never held accountable. So, you as the victim, you have to burden the entire mess yourself.
I’m an RT in a level one trauma center and a 70 bed ICU. I’ve been riding since before I can remember and currently have an old harley fxdx on a trickle charger in my garage. Haven’t registered it for a few years and don’t intend to until my son is out of the house. Riding is a game of roulette. I’ve seen and treated and “pulled the plug” on a lot of patients from all skill levels who all did the right thing and were killed by the person on 4wheels. I’ll ride again when my son is out on his own in 6ish years.
Gear is definitely a cost most people don’t estimate accurately. Your typical serious, safe rider is wearing hundreds if not thousands of dollars in protective equipment whether they’re on a cruiser or a sport bike.
$1000 is a good aim for costs if you get a good deal on gear. Helmet, gloves, jacket, boots, pants. Probably average $200 per piece on to have decent gear. Some people only wear a helmet, and I guess that's better than nothing

I did sell my 1290 Super Duke though 😟 but I still take the 690R KTM out for a spin.
I am 68 and been riding since I was 17 and so has my wife. We have two Indians.
The unreliability of those two bikes and major recalls some of which include break failure make going for a ride stressfull. We dont know what is gona fail and if we will get home. To us why bother riding anymore when things have gone down hill so badly. The only thing that may keep us riding is we also have a 98 Honda Blackbird.
The drama free Honda experiance is what we need to enjoy riding.

Well, I do spend a fair bit of time going around cones in parking lots but I am also committed to doing at least one high level course a year. My choice of course the past several years is California SuperBike. Consistently riding about15 to 17,000km a year. Education and training is certainly a key component keeping me on two wheels. And yes, staying in touch and being part of the mc company is also important to me. Btw just turned 70 a month ago. No intention of leaving the sport. 😊

I'm 60 now, been riding since 16. When we had kids my wife stopped riding with me I kept going, never stopped, had 3 to 4 bikes on and off till now.
What's scaring me now is the lousy way people drive. I'm in rural PA. Can't go 5 miles without seeing something stupid. Phones, alcohol, drugs, Can't drive, don't care...All at once, What is it?
I've done over 250k miles on 2 wheels. My last years coming scare me the most. I WANT to ride, but being paranoid takes the fun out of it.😡

I did it to get to school. I started riding to college on an 80cc honda elite scooter. Scholarship w 1000$ in the pocket can't recommend the lack of gear tho, learned in a hail storm sweatshirt and pants was not enough
I still ride at 65 yrs.I own 2 big bores, one of which is a HD Fatboy, the other a big bad Yamaha. My only transportation as a kid in high school was a Honda enduro ( they are called duel sports today) anyway I had a bad accident in high school and came damn close to being killed and I jumped right back on and kept going. Not sure that would happen today at my age but the experience I have now in safely riding was simply not there in high school and contributed greatly to my accident in the first place. How long will I continue to ride? Who knows. I really don’t think about it. I do however believe that the introduction of hand held devices have had a very negative effect on Motorcycling and it’s understandable. Riding safely today requires the highest state of situational awareness in all 360 degrees. Enjoying your ride is not the same as “Joy Riding “, I don’t joy ride because it takes away from your attention. I also minimize night riding. Night riding is simply not safe. Visibility to road hazard’s and nocturnal creatures wondering out into the road are also a huge threat. Wanna take a long road trip? Simply adjust your travel time to daylight hours. That’s how I roll.
Some people are just not smart enough to ride a motorcycle. Let alone a car. They constantly drop and wreck. Then they don't have the money to fix it. All the while ignoring important maintenance items which results in a catastrophic mechanical failure. Now they're stuck with a broke down bike and massive payments.
At least 50% of people are too stupid to drive safely.

Definitely road conditions have changed the driver's today are under extreme conditions to survive this economy, very little things set off anyone today. I usually enjoy working on my older Harley alot and when I ride I'll find a car to stay around and use them as a block for possible issues, im not in hurry ever. Now winter is almost here. It's time to upgrade and improve things..

I stop riding for over a decade. Just started back last month. A back injury did me in. Finally healthy again.
When you add in the high cost of frequent tire replacement on a motorbike, the advantages of higher fuel economy disappear. When you add in the extra time it takes to don and doff raingear, leather, helmets, and boots, the speed advantage of a motorcycle versus a car goes away too.
I ride year round in any weather by choice, but I have been debating just doing off-road lately. Safe Travels my Fellow Lane Splitters.

I would have to say safety distance, the competition of I have to be first attitude and total disregard for speed limit are the reason for accidents..

Reasons for stopping make sense here. But getting new riders is pretty tough when a good chunk of riders in public are straight up douchebags or just dont want to be bothered with. I went to a Harley dealer years ago to get info and insight. Felt like it was a problem for everyone in there just because I didn't "fit the look". I even knew if i walked out with one it'd be the iron 883 for obvious reasons. Its not as inclusive as everyone online wants to think it is. Ridiculous how annoying and close minded the older crowd is to newer riders.

Im 55, been riding since I was 6. Im giving it up. I lost my shifter leg 2 years ago. I put a hand shifter on my 2017 Ultra but as I get older Im finding it harder to hold the bike up. (my other leg has issues as well) I considered buying a smaller bike and with BMW KTM and Yamaha offering automatics for 2025 I was tempted. That said I really dont ride much anymore, the cost of bikes nowadays, and the general public doesn't pay attention on the roads these days so its just not worth it. As much as I hate to do it, I think I'm done

At 67 i was almost thrown 30ft at a 4way intersection near Sturgis w.out a helmet. If i had lived? My swerving and the car driver jamming his brakes...riding since 1990..my 2 80yr old friends didnt ride this 2024 summer

One of the things that hurts the most, is my hips because of the forward controllers on my Softail. I wish I could just get normal controllers, but apparently they are made. Which means I have to sell my bike buy another.

Where I live barely anybody is from America and I find their driving incredibly dangerous. They have no respect for our culture and driving and safety and proper use of a car is part of our culture.
It isn't just immigrants it's everyone behind the wheel of a car now.they all drive too fast!
@ I live in a NYC suburb, believe me immigrants are most of the problem lol there is absolutely no directional use with them and they stop, pull over and make turns that are completely foreign to my 43 years of car driving and almost 30 years of motorcycling. I wanted to take a short spin around town today and after an incident that happened in my car yesterday I just said forget it, I’ll take the bike out when I plan out a longer ride. I’m getting real discouraged lately.
I think most of people quitting has to do with the inability to learn more skills whether they want to admit it or not. People get lazy and stop practicing safety drills and skill riding. They stop taking classes or never take them. Without getting better people lose the drive to get out and ride. Getting better, learning more skills, and taking classes will allow you to avoid 98% of accidents. After learning this everything else becomes an excuse
It’s really easy keep people from texting on their phones. iPhones have an option that disables them while in motion via gps tracking. All they have to do is make that mandatory, phones off unless connected to a Bluetooth or headset.

Horsepower is great when you can afford it. But motoring should be to be enjoyed for ones own sake, never to impress anyone or to be part of a pack.

The instructor of my very class/lesson told me every rider goes down at least twice. Thankfully, my dips were not serious and served only to reinforce my respect for the ride, and the need to further understand and enhance my riding skills set. Practice with your riding skills go a long way toward preserving your life.
Not true at all. Ride defensively at all times and you can be safe for a lifetime of riding. Disregard this negative viewpoint. Not all riders crash. Not even close.
@ora33060 it's a relative term. Not every downed bike is a "crash." Even a slow speed (5 mph) loss of control and tip-over counts in that scenario. While it doesn't appy to every single rider, I'd bet it's surprisingly higher than you think.

Try to find a used motorcycle in NM It's a state full of short guys. Every used bike is a cruiser or dirt squirter. If strangers call you Lurch or Wookie, y don't want your knees as high as your ears.

It's common sense. You sell your motorcycle and buy a car when you get a family. You sell your motorcycle and buy a car when you two weeks in a row meet an opposing van sliding sideways towards you in your lane in the winter. It's not fear. It's simply being responsible. When the kids have moved out and are established you may sell your car and get a motorcycle again. You should try exercising a bit. I would like to know why someone would buy a motorcycle, then not ride. I regularly find deals on places like Facebook Marketplace of people who put maybe a couple of thousand miles on a bike, if that, then try to sell it. I found one listing of a girl who bought an MT03, rode it home, then decided to sell it. Literally the only miles on it is her ride from the dealership to her house. How does the phenomenon happen?
Because people get swept up in the excitement of buying a motorcycle, but then get buyer's remorse or they are scared to ride it. Most of the times they get talked into buying a bike by a friend, family member, or even a smooth talking salesperson. Or they buy with the intention of riding, but then other priorities take center stage, cutting short their availability so the bike just sits in the garage for weeks or months. So many different circumstances.
I bought a 12 year old Ultra with 95 miles on it! Guy rode it once. Those deals are out there.

@@robertocojones4471 - rumor has it he went on his first ride, scared to death, dropped it when he got home in his driveway and that was it! He sold it to the dealer he bought it from and I bought it from them.

The whole marriage/child time to settle down things drives me absolutely nuts , anytime I hear someone say yaaaahhhh I used to ride but it scared the misses so I gave it up 🙄 stfu you wasn’t about it to begin with!

With the way people are today they don’t pay attention when they drive. They drive drunk or they drive on drugs. They’re on their cell phones watching videos texting Lord knows why they don’t pay attention.
Lost the passion due to too much traffic, drivers texting, can’t wear casual cloths, can’t share the experience with more then two people, (traded for a Tritoon)…..other then an occasional long road trip, it became just another ride to the bar for a sandwich/beer. Getting caught in the rain. I’m 64 and gave up my ultra 5 yrs ago, I dont miss it. Now when a bike pulls along me, I remind myself that I’m glad I grew out of it.

So family is no excuse to quit riding motorcycles. I understand that sometimes you’re not gonna be able to because if you have a baby, you probably can’t put it on the back of the motorcycle. OK but yeah if you ride safely and responsibly and wear all the proper gear, you’re still pretty damn safe, especially if you ride with good road strategy and road skills so yeah having a family is a zero excuse for quitting riding motorcycles altogether, but riding less when you have to transport the baby around totally understandable and if you’re that worried about it, freaking get a life insurance policyyou should have one anyway if you have any dependence, you need to have life insurance it’s as simple as that get it and then live your life. Just be smart about it. And you shouldn’t have to ask yourself what am I gonna do if I’m out of work for six months well that’s what the six month emergency fund is for and the three month emergency fund on top of that that shouldn’t even be a question if you were not financially ready to have kids, don’t have them. It’s very simple.

OK, so my insurance is $99 a year for my motorcycle so I don’t have collision because my motorcycle is not worth a lot of money but still it doesn’t have to be expensive OK and you should never be making payments on a motorcycle anyway you should buy it all at once and payment should never be a thing except for the insurancethat same thing goes for cars. You should never have car payments. It’s a terrible idea if you can’t buy it all at once then that means you cannot afford it.
When the courts penalize drivers for hitting bikes in a more aggressive manor , then it will be safer for older riders to survive !!! Triple the points and fines for hitting a biker, accidents will happen less ! Todays society will only behave if the penalty exceeds the behavior !!!!! Nothing else will work, period !!!! Bikers can only do so much, big fines and restitution is in order $$$$$$$$$ Everything else is silly !!!
OK riding motorcycles does not have to be expensive. It can be if you choose for it to be that way or if you want it to be expensive my motorcycle cost me $3300 with 9 miles on it. I have put over 10,000 miles on it by this point in a little over a year insurance is cheap maintenance is also very inexpensive now I do have to change out parts More often because the parts are small OK but it’s not expensive. OK and registration is very cheap now I didn’t cheap out on the gear. My helmet was almost a $600 helmet, but it’s light comfortable and it’s supposed to be very good at its job if I ever have to test out hopefully not Now the other gear cost a little bit of money. I didn’t cheap out on it though right but that year is gonna last me quite some time and I get 75 200 miles per gallon with the cheapest gasoline OK my car gets 25 miles per gallon and I haven’t saved enough money on gas yet to pay for the cost of just buying the motorcycle but I will get there so yeah cycling doesn’t have to be expensive. OK on the other hand there’s nothing wrong with riding an expensive motorcycle. It’s perfectly fine just as long as you can afford it so I wanted to get into it with the most reliable motorcycle. I could find at the best price and I think I did a good job of itnow my motorcycle is small but it gets me anywhere. I need to go so it works.

It's kind of funny talking about making motorcycling cool again/community when someone slams/ mocks the Honda Rebel. Lots of gatepeepers and people whom express their opinions and impressions as facts. The motorcycling community is very tribal. Talking 🦬💩 about scooters and small displacement motorcyclists. I like this channel because of the motorcycle and gun discussions.
