This scene really illustrates how much ER changed over the years. Ross was a key character in the first 6 seasons, and by the 15th nobody that had worked with him was still there. It was always disappointing to see the main characters leave, one after the other, but it is also a testament to the writers, filmmakers and producers that they were able to do such amazing character development and keep the audience interested for so long. They had lost all of their season 1 main cast by season 8, and still managed to put on 7 more good seasons before wrapping it up. This really was a special show!
Even though its a fictional medical drama, staff turnover in a hospital is common and mirrors real life. Doctors, nurses, administrators, and other hospital employees do come and go. They do move on to other things or (worse) get fired or let go from a hospital for various reasons just like any other career field. Actual medical people who watch ER would say the staff changes at County's ER department is one of the few things that is realistic.
ER has several distinct arcs the first arc with doug/mark/carter/carol/benton etc. then the second arc with weaver/abby/corday/romano/luka/carter in the middle seasons then abby/luka/neela/archie/sam/ray for the last few seasons and of course, they bring carter back for the last season to wrap up the story since he was one of the main characters of the first 2/3 of the show's time
They didn't loose all their original Season 1 main cast by season 8, Carter was still a regular on the show and was for several seasons more. Also Susan had returned by season 8.
I always had massive respect for Clooney for returning. He was an Oscar winning actor by this stage making $20m a movie, but came back to what made him famous.
And when he originally left the show he didn't do so until his contract was up. Not like David Caruso on NYPD Blue bailed in the beginning of season 2.
I always hated that Doug and Carol weren’t at Mark Greene’s funeral. They were his two closest friends. I realize in real life there were probably reasons they couldn’t work it out, but story wise, they should have been there.
That Clooney and Juliana would come back to ER after years leaving the show speaks volumes. GC had already made Oceans 11, Three Kings, Dusk Till Dawn, Good Night, Good Luck AND won an Oscar speaks volumes about his commitment ( don’t forget his cameo when JM left the show). And JM was about to star in the Goodwife. Either could have said no but chose to acknowledge their success. Kudos to both 😘😘😘😘
So true.. lots of old faces returned.. Benton was there for carters transplant, Greene in a flashback n forth episode where banfields son died in that er, morganstern w an older doctor who actually had established the physical er and emergency dept.
They would have been nothing if it hadn't been for ER - Clooney had been on more failed pilots than any other current actor and was playing musical couches with his friends and living with a different one each month or so. Juliana hadn't been in much of anything to remember. Clooney is a great actor, director, producer, writer, and philanthropist, and does as much or more behind the scenes than in front of the camera anymore.
She delivered her twins and then worked in the ER with her for a few months. Carol was close with Luka before she left she probably would've liked to here that Luka and Abby were a thing now.
*Regardless if you followed Doug and Carol or not:* These scenes answered our (the audience's) questions on how they are doing in Seattle. We see both are employed in the same hospital. Doug is still a doctor. Carol got a better job. (Before seeing this for the first time, I'm betting you thought she would still be a nurse - and even running a new clinic.) Their personal banter is still the same as it was in Chicago. A happy ending.
Carol has a better job during that return episode. But I'm sure when she first moved to Seattle probably had to work as a nurse for a little while before she could apply for that transplant coordinator job.
This part is not in this clip but Hathaway mispronounces Spokane WA at some point in the episode. You'd think after 9 years living there, you'd be able to correctly pronounce the 2nd largest city in the state.
ER will forever be the greatest medical show on TV! They had real emergency docs on the writing staff so some of the cases were based on real life cases. And the docs gave them pointers to make it look as real as possible.
I could never get into it. I think it was the 10pm time slot. At 10pm, I wanted to wind down my day and the intensity of this show was just too much for me shortly before bed. My wife felt the same way.
This scene shows how life keeps moving forward and we are all transitioning through.Doug Ross used to be a big cheese back on Chicago but after 15yrs no one knew who he was and they all worked at the same place..that is life..in all its bittersweet glory
That's life. Many of the people that Doug worked with in Chicago were not longer there after 15 years, many had moved on themselves and found new things.
I'd equate it to that kid who was the prom king/star quarterback in high school, but a few years after graduating, nobody is there anymore that even remembers who he was.
She had an amazing run considering her character was supposed to die in the very first episode. Originally Carol Hathaway was not supposed to survive her suicide attempt.
They had Susan Sarandon guest starring in the episode as the grandma of the boy who was donating organs. So she was plenty big enough of an actor to be able to use in teh marketing of the episode.

Yea there's no way Grey's woould have someone coming back and not promoting them. Imagine if Christina Yang ever makes a return, you know they're promoting that.
Ironically the kidney patient was John Carter and they never knew they helped to save their old friend's life. If Doug had asked about Carter he might've found out
@@cyn2612 Yeah. Apparently he only had one kidney or at least one functioning one. Not sure why since his kidney was saved after he got stabbed. Anyways he got some illness that had destroyed his remaining kidney and he came back to get on the transplant list. Along with Carol and Doug unknowingly helping him to get the kidney, Peter Benton ended up overseeing the transplant itself. His attention to detail and insistence on going by the book saved Carter when a complication arose
Sadly, Mark wouldn’t be there and it wouldn’t be as good, but however I feel like Rachel would fit in well with them. But it would still be pretty cool if they did that.
Hell they did it with the X-Files, 24 and they still go on with Law & Order and that's been around longer then ER so why the hell doesn't NBC go thru with that idea?
Man, my passed grandma loved Clooney so much we used to watch er together back when i was little. When he appeared on the screen she would shout "Its him !😂" lmao.
The quality of writing and attention to detail in projects back in the day is first-rate. Sadly, this standard doesn't exist in Hollywood projects any longer for a number of reasons I wouldn't get into. This said, the chemistry btw the original cast (especially Julianna Margulies and George Clooney) is pure perfection. However, when you compare the entire run of NBC's ER to any other major network TV medical drama after it ER still wins all the awards and praise as being the best TV medical drama of all time. Taking the time to watch (or rewatch) ER from beginning to end with new eyes is absolutely worth the time. By today's standard, it's far better than anything else currently on the major networks. Truth.
When reunion done in 2000 Clooney was filming Oceans 11 and doing well. By this scene in 2009 he had filmed the trilogy and was a massive international movie star.
I spent weeks like crazy, literally went nuts waiting for this episode!! The longest wait of my life. I was so anxious to watch Doug and Carol after all those years. It was magical and so beautful!!! Of course it would have been perfect for them to know that the kidney was for Carter and to see a photo in the distance of a wedding or of the girls.
With them being all the way up in Seattle it probably made it difficult to get away to Chicago if they had a lot going on in their lives. In a perfect world people would come back for funerals like this but in a real world you just send flowers because you can't get away for a funeral 2000 miles away.

It's funny how no one mentions Carter. Even at the end Carol and Doug say the kidney went to some doctor in Chicago. Looking back I get why he's not mentioned,it would throw the focus off,oh well what might have been.
Generally speaking, they try not to know the names of the donors or recipients. Removes favouritism. All they need to know is that person X needs organ Y and thats as far as it goes.
they don;t want there to be too much connections. it would be too much fan service for doug and carol to learn it's for their old friend carter. it's likely intended for them to be a near miss on purpose.
@@madirishgirl76 Actually Carol was still there when Carter got stabbed. She went home right before the Valentines Day party that took place during when the stabbings took place. Then came into work the next day after everything happened. But then they wrote her character off a few episodes later. Story wise they didn't get her involved with those storylines because they knew her character was about to leave the show.
That was the point, no-one was supposed to know one of the organs was for Carter, because if they had, that would have made them trying to get the organs VERY off putting to everyone
The producers did a great job finding a very organic way to bring back as many of the OG cast members as they could for the final season. We got em all: Carter, Benton, Greene (ala flashback), Ross, Hathaway, Lewis, Corday, Weaver, Morgenstern..
I always liked that George Clooney remained loyal to the show. You wish he could’ve stayed longer, but his film career was blowing up, so he had to go. He actually fulfilled his contract because he could’ve left the show sooner!
It's so weird to see people in a waiting room not staring at their phones, trying to occupy their time by reading whatever magazine or newspapers in the waiting room
ER just wasn't the same after the original cast started to leave. Every time I rewatch the series I struggle to make it past Season 5. I know a lot of them lasted longer, but the new cast members just aren't nearly as interesting. I usually make it to the episode where Carter and Lucy get stabbed and then throw in the towel.
I started binge watching because of lockdown and it took me only 3 months to get to season 10... That was from April to July. Ever since Carter left I haven't even watched 2 episodes per week.
It wasn’t kept private everybody knew they were returning for the end, there were on set images of Clooney that got out - there was a huge happy buzz because he was seen wearing a wedding ring - which validated that he and Carol were still together AND married.

I can fully understand why George Clooney did not come back for Mark Greene's funeral because he didn't want his presence to be a distraction. This episode could have given him the chance to offer an explanation for his absence. While asking about everyone else Doug could have asked if they knew Mark Greene. When Sam & Neela said no he could have looked at the floor the way he does when he's uncomfortable and said that Mark was his best friend who died and he always regretted not being able to attend his funeral because...?????....whatever. It only would have taken a second but I think it might have offered closure for many of us fans.
i feel like at this point (well over 7 years after mark greene's death) he wouldve all ready explained everything to his friends. He wouldn't do so for people he never met before.
I wish Carol would’ve asked about Abby. And that they would’ve known the kidney was going Carter… it Sucks only a handful of them got to see how much character growth he had over the years and how far he came.

1000% yes. I'm not saying a don't like Grey's Anatomy, because I do like it. However, they need to take a page from the original ER and make another, NEW ER.. please. ugh. I'd pay.
I always felt like Doug not mentioning Carter was probably because he'd be shocked if Carter was still there. Seems like Doug knew the events leading up to just before Xmas of season 8 because he asks about Benton and knew that Lewis was back. If you recall very early in season 8 Carter nearly quits because there's not a attending spot available. Doug and or Carol might've heard the gossip and just not followed up.
I think the reason they didn't mention Carter was that one of the organs that Sam and Neela were there to pick up was a kidney that was going to go to Carter. I think if that cat have got out of the bag so to speak the entire focus of the episode would have changed and I don't think they wanted to do that.
The reasons are two fold: 1. George Clooney didn’t want to return and take any attention away from Anthony Edwards final episode. 2. The producers decided not to ask him because they got a lot of heat from NBC when they kept his appearance for Julianna Marguiles final episode a secret from them. NBC was pissed because had they known they would’ve promoted the hell out of it which would’ve ruined the surprise.
@@therealmistahjay ... I fully understand Clooney's reasonings, especially after all the hoops they had to jump through for Julianne's final episode. But I still think they should have inserted the two of them in the funeral scene at the end. No talking, just show them standing there for three or four seconds which would at least prove they were there. That wouldn't have taken anything away from Anthony Edwards.
@@PlumbPitiful I doubt very much that you could have George Clooney on screen for a single frame and not end up with it overshadowing Anthony Edwards. George was way too big by then for that to not happen. Even without a single line the whole focus of the audience and of NBC would land on the George Clooney cameo, not on Anthony Edwards' final episode.

It was so much fun to see Doug, Carol, Peter, and the rest return in various ways in the last season. ER was a wonderful show and you really grew to either like, or hate the characters. I'm looking at you Weaver and Romano. I despised Benton at the start but the development of his character really changed my opinion of him.
Dick Wolf could get a character from County General to move to Gaffney Chicago Medical Center, if he had wanted to. Remember he had done this before: Richard Belzer's Detective John Munch went from _Homicide: Life On The Street_ to _Law & Order: SVU_ and Wolf never created _Homicide._

The only way that Doug could know that Susan returned to County General is if him and Mark kept in touch off screen and Mark told him. That's why he asked if she's still there. Susan left the first time before he left.
I like to think they kept in touch with Corday, since they probably kept in touch with Mark (you’ll notice he doesn’t ask about Romano either, and Corday would have been the logical person to tell him). But I’m surprised about Chuny, Haleh, and Jerry too. Unless Carol kept in touch with Chuny and Haleh.
Speaks volumes that Clooney returned for a cameo even after achieving stardom and becoming one of the most bankable actors in Hollywood, he didn't forget his roots in primetime. EDIT: Clooney was also asked to come back for Greene's funeral but he didn't want to impose being that a beloved character had died.
I was starting to find it weird how Doug asked about Susan considering how she had originally left the show before Doug and Carol and came back in season 8. But then I figured that he probably kept in touch with Mark and Mark might’ve told him Susan had come back.
I really forgot that some of these characters were on this show! Neela and Ray and a few others.... for some reason I recognized them immediately but forgot that it was because of this show! I loved ER!
I loved seeing Doug and Carol. ER was a great show up until Greene died. He held the show together. I found it chaotic afterwards. Abby and Luca kept it going a bit but it just wasn't the same. The original characters were definitely the best.
If he'd said that it would have let the cat out of the bag that the kidney they were picking up was going to Carter. That would changed the scene entirely, if not the whole episode. I don't think they wanted to do that. I think they were just trying to bring back all the original cast to make a final "Curtain Call" to celebrate the end of the series without getting into anything too complicated.
I'm not surprised at all. Carter was just one med student among others to him. He mentioned only residents or attendings, no interns, no med students. He could easily have imagined those naturally left and pursued their careers in other hospitals. He didn't even mention Anna Del Amico who was working in paediatrics with him.
Okay, I just realized Anna Del Amico had left before him. But for the general idea, in real life, he would have seen many interns and med students come and go. Sure, Carter stayed long, but he wasn't a direct colleague to Ross.
Also strange that Doug mentions Susan when he was there during her first exit, and by the time she came back Carol was already gone too so how did he know she came back?

My theory on why Doug didn't mention Carter was because possibly they still had some sort of contact, maybe Doug thought Carter was still in Africa, Kinda similar to Benton in the same episode who thought Carter was still in Africa even though they had limited contact. About him saying no about Abby was true, maybe he knew who she was due to her helping delivering his twins but Doug wasn't there when Abby was there which is why he said no.
Just going by memory, but I think Doug never directly worked with Carter on a regular basis, so thats why Doug didn't bring up his name. I do not believe either men kept in touch with each other. As for Abby, only Carol knows the details. (If Carol had been present in the room and Abby's name is brought up, then the conversation can swing differently when Carol mentions to Doug that Abby helped her in the twins' delivery.) This chit-chat Doug had with Sam and Neela basically told him how much turnover had happened at County after he left years ago, since the gals never heard a majority of the names he brought up. At least he now knows Anspaugh is still there.

Okay, I watched this show series religiously from the beginning to about halfway through, and I was familiar with the second set of characters... Or the third set, or however that works out. But, I find it hard to believe that Neela and Sam have never even heard of Doug Ross and Carol Hathaway. Surely Sam, with her sharpness, would've done a double-blinking double-take, looking off to the left in mild agitation for a long moment and then right before the pair left the room, had a 'wait a minute' moment... "There was a 'Doug Ross' and a 'Carol Hathaway' where we came from, in Chicago"... What a coincidence! And then Carol could ask, "what part of Chicago?" And then to find out that it is them. And then they could "jump-cut" the scene to them seated in the room, discussing everyone... especially CARTER!! Ahem. Now, I know that Doug Ross didn't really know those people. But, he could have heard of these people in letters and long distance phone calls back-and-forth (this was pre-internet and pre-cell phone days, if memory serves!) And Doug could have described what he had heard of these people as we originally knew them before they changed... Sherry Stringfield thin and with long hair, square jaw... No, she's more matronly, with shorter hair, square jaw... Oh... And we could THEN have enjoyed the dichotomy of the various changes to our favorite characters ... both OLD and MORE RECENT... that we ourselves may have missed... However, we have to have more out of this thing than just Doug Ross asking them to say hello to Anspaugh for him, as if ANYONE would care if THAT ever happened... in reality... The scene tortures the viewer with a sort of a 'preeclampsia' episode agitation... I mean, this whole damn scene is just pregnant with infinite possibility. And we basically get dick-snot out of it. Nothing. _____ It's like that scene where Carter catches Benton on the jogging trail and tries one last time to get some damn validation from that cold asshole... You would think that Benton could have given Carter the royal nod, or something... But, no. "No, you're not." It's enough to piss you off. I liked Benton, and I would definitely want him as a doctor. But I would not want to work with him.
Carol when she moved to Seattle I assume at first she was just taking care of the girls. Then when they got pre school aged probably went to work as a nurse at that hospital. Then a few years later saw an opening for the transplant coordinator and interviewed for the job.
I stopped watching ER after Mark Green died I recently fimished the episodes on Hulu. I dont think the new characters and story lines were as good as previous seasons but this episode really touched me. First seeing Carter then Carol, Doug and Benton was abdolutely wonderful!!! I never cared for Benton but i really liked him in this episode. Great episode. I just wish everything had worked out for carter in his personal life
The same as everywhere else I imagine. Follow the regulations and keep distance when possible as well as frequent covid tests. I think if this show was still active at least one doctor would have gotten a bad case of lung covid probaly to show the possible serious nature of the virus.
It really isn't surprising that Clooney came back. He referred to ER in interviews as the 'brass ring', that if it weren't for a 10pm time slot for ER on Thursday nights on NBC that none of his future career would have happened. This was his way of saying thank you.
I'll never forgive the producers for doing the episode with Doug and Carol coming back like this and not them meeting the old gang again. I missed all expectations, it definitely wasn't how I expected the end of the serie, since all the important characters were there.
Well I sort of get it, it would be hard for them to put them all together without it feeling contrived. Especially since each character’s exit left them in a very different place and state (Doug and Carol in Seattle, for instance).

In addition, it would be easy to explain if Carter had told Peter a few episodes before something like, "I called the old team to see my project, let's see who shows up" and surprise: Carol and Doug go there. It wasn't that hard and it was going to be a lot more memorable.
@@cmupensfan He didn't have to go to the hospital, just join the old gang. Elizabeth, Peter and Kerry didn't go there, but they got together. In theory, there was no reason for anyone who left Chicago (Susan or Kerry) to go back there, but they came back anyway. Again: It wasn't that hard and it was going to be a lot more memorable.
Some have asked why Doug Ross didn't ask about Carter or anyone else at County, but once Sam and Neela knew that Doug had been there, why didn't THEY mention Carter? Maybe in theory they might have been concerned about Doug and Carol exerting "undue influence" on the grandmother etc, but they could have at least discussed it among themselves.

I believe the theory is that the showrunners wanted to put Doug and Carol in the funeral scene but there was some disagreement with the studio because of the previous incident with Clooney appearing in Margulies's last episode. Apparently the studio wasn't aware of Clooney's appearance, if they were, they wanted to promo the heck out of Clooney and the producers didn't agree with that. So they made the decision to not have Clooney/Margulies in the funeral episode.
I hate that no one mentioned Carter! At the end of this episode,when Doug and Carol are talking and she says”went to some doctor” I’m forever saying “and you both know him!”
Everyone from the original cast came back during the final season. Even the characters who were dead! Clooney would have been a real jerk if he said no while everybody else said yes to coming back
As much as I love the original ER cast I grew to appreciate the cast from the later seasons. I wish ER would have went longer like SVU I think they could have pulled it off.

Neela heard of Greene through Carter he brought him up right before he left in season 11 about how they would write a letter to themselves while under residency with Greene. Abby, luka, Pratt, Carter and a lot of the others knew mark but none of the people like Sam Neela or Ray or Morris knew Greene.
Always bothered me that when Carol asks who everyone is every single person other than Neela says their name, city and hospital. Neela just says Chicago. Would have been nice to have seen Carol's reaction to hearing the name county general.

That Clooney and Juliana would come back to ER after years leaving the show speaks volumes. GC had already made Oceans 11, Three Kings, Dusk Till Dawn, Good Night, Good Luck AND won an Oscar speaks volumes about his commitment ( don’t forget his cameo when JM left the show). And JM was about to star in the Goodwife. Either could have said no but chose to acknowledge their success. Kudos to both 😘😘😘😘
So true.. lots of old faces returned.. Benton was there for carters transplant, Greene in a flashback n forth episode where banfields son died in that er, morganstern w an older doctor who actually had established the physical er and emergency dept.

They would have been nothing if it hadn't been for ER - Clooney had been on more failed pilots than any other current actor and was playing musical couches with his friends and living with a different one each month or so. Juliana hadn't been in much of anything to remember. Clooney is a great actor, director, producer, writer, and philanthropist, and does as much or more behind the scenes than in front of the camera anymore.

*Regardless if you followed Doug and Carol or not:* These scenes answered our (the audience's) questions on how they are doing in Seattle. We see both are employed in the same hospital. Doug is still a doctor. Carol got a better job. (Before seeing this for the first time, I'm betting you thought she would still be a nurse - and even running a new clinic.) Their personal banter is still the same as it was in Chicago. A happy ending.
The best ending ever. They're together, happy and stable. It can't be said for most of the other characters, so I'm glad they were the lucky ones.

Carol has a better job during that return episode. But I'm sure when she first moved to Seattle probably had to work as a nurse for a little while before she could apply for that transplant coordinator job.
The best thing is Doug's smile to her when he says he is sticking around...that is just so him first seasons, that is so George Clooney actually.
This part is not in this clip but Hathaway mispronounces Spokane WA at some point in the episode. You'd think after 9 years living there, you'd be able to correctly pronounce the 2nd largest city in the state.
ER will forever be the greatest medical show on TV! They had real emergency docs on the writing staff so some of the cases were based on real life cases. And the docs gave them pointers to make it look as real as possible.

I could never get into it. I think it was the 10pm time slot. At 10pm, I wanted to wind down my day and the intensity of this show was just too much for me shortly before bed. My wife felt the same way.
This scene shows how life keeps moving forward and we are all transitioning through.Doug Ross used to be a big cheese back on Chicago but after 15yrs no one knew who he was and they all worked at the same place..that is life..in all its bittersweet glory
That's life. Many of the people that Doug worked with in Chicago were not longer there after 15 years, many had moved on themselves and found new things.
I'd equate it to that kid who was the prom king/star quarterback in high school, but a few years after graduating, nobody is there anymore that even remembers who he was.

Carol Hathaway was awesome. She was one of my favourite characters along with Mark, Doug, Carter, and Jeanie.
She had an amazing run considering her character was supposed to die in the very first episode. Originally Carol Hathaway was not supposed to survive her suicide attempt.

They had Susan Sarandon guest starring in the episode as the grandma of the boy who was donating organs. So she was plenty big enough of an actor to be able to use in teh marketing of the episode.

Anyways he got some illness that had destroyed his remaining kidney and he came back to get on the transplant list. Along with Carol and Doug unknowingly helping him to get the kidney, Peter Benton ended up overseeing the transplant itself. His attention to detail and insistence on going by the book saved Carter when a complication arose

The quality of writing and attention to detail in projects back in the day is first-rate. Sadly, this standard doesn't exist in Hollywood projects any longer for a number of reasons I wouldn't get into. This said, the chemistry btw the original cast (especially Julianna Margulies and George Clooney) is pure perfection. However, when you compare the entire run of NBC's ER to any other major network TV medical drama after it ER still wins all the awards and praise as being the best TV medical drama of all time. Taking the time to watch (or rewatch) ER from beginning to end with new eyes is absolutely worth the time. By today's standard, it's far better than anything else currently on the major networks. Truth.

I spent weeks like crazy, literally went nuts waiting for this episode!! The longest wait of my life. I was so anxious to watch Doug and Carol after all those years. It was magical and so beautful!!! Of course it would have been perfect for them to know that the kidney was for Carter and to see a photo in the distance of a wedding or of the girls.

I loved this scene to see how Doug and Carol are doing in Seattle, but it always bothered me that they didn’t return for Mark’s funeral.
With them being all the way up in Seattle it probably made it difficult to get away to Chicago if they had a lot going on in their lives. In a perfect world people would come back for funerals like this but in a real world you just send flowers because you can't get away for a funeral 2000 miles away.
Fun fact, they had asked Clooney to return but he didn't want to impose on such an emotional goodbye for a beloved character like Mark.

Generally speaking, they try not to know the names of the donors or recipients. Removes favouritism. All they need to know is that person X needs organ Y and thats as far as it goes.

@@madirishgirl76 Actually Carol was still there when Carter got stabbed. She went home right before the Valentines Day party that took place during when the stabbings took place. Then came into work the next day after everything happened. But then they wrote her character off a few episodes later. Story wise they didn't get her involved with those storylines because they knew her character was about to leave the show.

The producers did a great job finding a very organic way to bring back as many of the OG cast members as they could for the final season.
We got em all: Carter, Benton, Greene (ala flashback), Ross, Hathaway, Lewis, Corday, Weaver, Morgenstern..
Romano too in the same flashback episode as Greene.
The only Season 1 character they weren't able to get back in was Jeanie. But she appeared in Season 14 and was great

ER just wasn't the same after the original cast started to leave. Every time I rewatch the series I struggle to make it past Season 5. I know a lot of them lasted longer, but the new cast members just aren't nearly as interesting. I usually make it to the episode where Carter and Lucy get stabbed and then throw in the towel.
I started binge watching because of lockdown and it took me only 3 months to get to season 10... That was from April to July. Ever since Carter left I haven't even watched 2 episodes per week.
After Carol left, I watched purely out of habit.
The later seasons were hard for me to get through considering almost no one was left from the earlier seasons.

I can fully understand why George Clooney did not come back for Mark Greene's funeral because he didn't want his presence to be a distraction. This episode could have given him the chance to offer an explanation for his absence. While asking about everyone else Doug could have asked if they knew Mark Greene. When Sam & Neela said no he could have looked at the floor the way he does when he's uncomfortable and said that Mark was his best friend who died and he always regretted not being able to attend his funeral because...?????....whatever. It only would have taken a second but I think it might have offered closure for many of us fans.

I always felt like Doug not mentioning Carter was probably because he'd be shocked if Carter was still there. Seems like Doug knew the events leading up to just before Xmas of season 8 because he asks about Benton and knew that Lewis was back. If you recall very early in season 8 Carter nearly quits because there's not a attending spot available. Doug and or Carol might've heard the gossip and just not followed up.
I think the reason they didn't mention Carter was that one of the organs that Sam and Neela were there to pick up was a kidney that was going to go to Carter. I think if that cat have got out of the bag so to speak the entire focus of the episode would have changed and I don't think they wanted to do that.
I can't believe that they didn't bring Dr. Ross back for Dr. Green's funeral! But still... I love all episodes!
The reasons are two fold:
1. George Clooney didn’t want to return and take any attention away from Anthony Edwards final episode.
2. The producers decided not to ask him because they got a lot of heat from NBC when they kept his appearance for Julianna Marguiles final episode a secret from them. NBC was pissed because had they known they would’ve promoted the hell out of it which would’ve ruined the surprise.

But I still think they should have inserted the two of them in the funeral scene at the end. No talking, just show them standing there for three or four seconds which would at least prove they were there. That wouldn't have taken anything away from Anthony Edwards.
@@PlumbPitiful I doubt very much that you could have George Clooney on screen for a single frame and not end up with it overshadowing Anthony Edwards. George was way too big by then for that to not happen. Even without a single line the whole focus of the audience and of NBC would land on the George Clooney cameo, not on Anthony Edwards' final episode.

It was so much fun to see Doug, Carol, Peter, and the rest return in various ways in the last season. ER was a wonderful show and you really grew to either like, or hate the characters. I'm looking at you Weaver and Romano. I despised Benton at the start but the development of his character really changed my opinion of him.
Frankly, I'm surprised Dick Wolf hasn't dragged County General Kicking and Screaming into his little corner of his Chicago world.

Speaks volumes that Clooney returned for a cameo even after achieving stardom and becoming one of the most bankable actors in Hollywood, he didn't forget his roots in primetime. EDIT: Clooney was also asked to come back for Greene's funeral but he didn't want to impose being that a beloved character had died.

I really forgot that some of these characters were on this show! Neela and Ray and a few others.... for some reason I recognized them immediately but forgot that it was because of this show! I loved ER!

I loved seeing Doug and Carol. ER was a great show up until Greene died. He held the show together. I found it chaotic afterwards. Abby and Luca kept it going a bit but it just wasn't the same. The original characters were definitely the best.

If he'd said that it would have let the cat out of the bag that the kidney they were picking up was going to Carter. That would changed the scene entirely, if not the whole episode. I don't think they wanted to do that. I think they were just trying to bring back all the original cast to make a final "Curtain Call" to celebrate the end of the series without getting into anything too complicated.
Doug slept with a girlfriend of Carter that why didn't bring it up because Doug wasn't there when Carter was attacked..

I'm not surprised at all. Carter was just one med student among others to him. He mentioned only residents or attendings, no interns, no med students. He could easily have imagined those naturally left and pursued their careers in other hospitals. He didn't even mention Anna Del Amico who was working in paediatrics with him.
Okay, I just realized Anna Del Amico had left before him. But for the general idea, in real life, he would have seen many interns and med students come and go. Sure, Carter stayed long, but he wasn't a direct colleague to Ross.

Somebody said that was the point, that no one was supposed to be thinking about Carter, but yet we're all actively working on getting him a kidney
It drove me crazy, but I'm pretty sure they did it on purpose.
My theory on why Doug didn't mention Carter was because possibly they still had some sort of contact, maybe Doug thought Carter was still in Africa, Kinda similar to Benton in the same episode who thought Carter was still in Africa even though they had limited contact. About him saying no about Abby was true, maybe he knew who she was due to her helping delivering his twins but Doug wasn't there when Abby was there which is why he said no.
Just going by memory, but I think Doug never directly worked with Carter on a regular basis, so thats why Doug didn't bring up his name. I do not believe either men kept in touch with each other. As for Abby, only Carol knows the details. (If Carol had been present in the room and Abby's name is brought up, then the conversation can swing differently when Carol mentions to Doug that Abby helped her in the twins' delivery.) This chit-chat Doug had with Sam and Neela basically told him how much turnover had happened at County after he left years ago, since the gals never heard a majority of the names he brought up. At least he now knows Anspaugh is still there.

Okay, I watched this show series religiously from the beginning to about halfway through, and I was familiar with the second set of characters... Or the third set, or however that works out.
But, I find it hard to believe that Neela and Sam have never even heard of Doug Ross and Carol Hathaway.
Surely Sam, with her sharpness, would've done a double-blinking double-take, looking off to the left in mild agitation for a long moment and then right before the pair left the room, had a 'wait a minute' moment... "There was a 'Doug Ross' and a 'Carol Hathaway' where we came from, in Chicago"...
What a coincidence!
And then Carol could ask, "what part of Chicago?"
And then to find out that it is them.
And then they could "jump-cut" the scene to them seated in the room, discussing everyone... especially CARTER!!

Now, I know that Doug Ross didn't really know those people.
But, he could have heard of these people in letters and long distance phone calls back-and-forth (this was pre-internet and pre-cell phone days, if memory serves!)
And Doug could have described what he had heard of these people as we originally knew them before they changed... Sherry Stringfield thin and with long hair, square jaw... No, she's more matronly, with shorter hair, square jaw... Oh...
And we could THEN have enjoyed the dichotomy of the various changes to our favorite characters ... both OLD and MORE RECENT... that we ourselves may have missed...
However, we have to have more out of this thing than just Doug Ross asking them to say hello to Anspaugh for him, as if ANYONE would care if THAT ever happened... in reality...
The scene tortures the viewer with a sort of a 'preeclampsia' episode agitation...
I mean, this whole damn scene is just pregnant with infinite possibility.
And we basically get dick-snot out of it.
Nothing.

It's like that scene where Carter catches Benton on the jogging trail and tries one last time to get some damn validation from that cold asshole...
You would think that Benton could have given Carter the royal nod, or something...

I liked Benton, and I would definitely want him as a doctor. But I would not want to work with him.
Carol when she moved to Seattle I assume at first she was just taking care of the girls. Then when they got pre school aged probably went to work as a nurse at that hospital. Then a few years later saw an opening for the transplant coordinator and interviewed for the job.

I recently fimished the episodes on Hulu. I dont think the new characters and story lines were as good as previous seasons but this episode really touched me. First seeing Carter then Carol, Doug and Benton was abdolutely wonderful!!! I never cared for Benton but i really liked him in this episode. Great episode. I just wish everything had worked out for carter in his personal life

The same as everywhere else I imagine. Follow the regulations and keep distance when possible as well as frequent covid tests. I think if this show was still active at least one doctor would have gotten a bad case of lung covid probaly to show the possible serious nature of the virus.

It really isn't surprising that Clooney came back. He referred to ER in interviews as the 'brass ring', that if it weren't for a 10pm time slot for ER on Thursday nights on NBC that none of his future career would have happened. This was his way of saying thank you.
I'll never forgive the producers for doing the episode with Doug and Carol coming back like this and not them meeting the old gang again. I missed all expectations, it definitely wasn't how I expected the end of the serie, since all the important characters were there.
Well I sort of get it, it would be hard for them to put them all together without it feeling contrived. Especially since each character’s exit left them in a very different place and state (Doug and Carol in Seattle, for instance).
@@Xerruy They could have done the same thing they did to bring Susan and Kerry. In addition, it would be easy to explain if Carter had told Peter a few episodes before something like, "I called the old team to see my project, let's see who shows up" and surprise: Carol and Doug go there. It wasn't that hard and it was going to be a lot more memorable.

Doug was persona non grata back at County, and Carol tech quit on them. .There would be no reason for them to be back in Chicago once Mark had passed
@@cmupensfan He didn't have to go to the hospital, just join the old gang. Elizabeth, Peter and Kerry didn't go there, but they got together. In theory, there was no reason for anyone who left Chicago (Susan or Kerry) to go back there, but they came back anyway. Again: It wasn't that hard and it was going to be a lot more memorable.

Some have asked why Doug Ross didn't ask about Carter or anyone else at County, but once Sam and Neela knew that Doug had been there, why didn't THEY mention Carter? Maybe in theory they might have been concerned about Doug and Carol exerting "undue influence" on the grandmother etc, but they could have at least discussed it among themselves.
Somebody said that was the point, that no one was supposed to be thinking about Carter, but yet we're all actively working on getting him a kidney
I will never wrap my head around all this HD lighting and detail. TV looked way better back in the nineties, more cinematic, less realistic.
It was nice for neela and Sam to have a scene with Doug.

It was a shame they didn't make it to Greene's funeral earlier.
They did that because if they had pulled those two in any scenes involving George Clooney would have caused distraction towards the real focus.
@@Flashygrrl I can understand that reasoning. But Doug was his best friend. Carol became a close friend as well. Even with all of Doug's flaws, I think his character would've still made that funeral.

I believe the theory is that the showrunners wanted to put Doug and Carol in the funeral scene but there was some disagreement with the studio because of the previous incident with Clooney appearing in Margulies's last episode. Apparently the studio wasn't aware of Clooney's appearance, if they were, they wanted to promo the heck out of Clooney and the producers didn't agree with that. So they made the decision to not have Clooney/Margulies in the funeral episode.
Really Tired 64 At the very least, the show could have maybe found look alikes and not showed their faces at all - like it did for the nurse, Lydia.

I hate that no one mentioned Carter! At the end of this episode,when Doug and Carol are talking and she says”went to some doctor” I’m forever saying “and you both know him!”

Clooney was a stand up guy. Knew that ER made him a star and was happy to go back for a guest slot when the show was winding down.
Everyone from the original cast came back during the final season. Even the characters who were dead! Clooney would have been a real jerk if he said no while everybody else said yes to coming back

As much as I love the original ER cast I grew to appreciate the cast from the later seasons. I wish ER would have went longer like SVU I think they could have pulled it off.
ER never dissapoints! Wish they would have mentioned Carter though because that is charachter all of them knew... Don't remember if Green was still alive when Neela started though 🤔

Greene was still alive when Pratt started but not Neela.
Neela heard of Greene through Carter he brought him up right before he left in season 11 about how they would write a letter to themselves while under residency with Greene. Abby, luka, Pratt, Carter and a lot of the others knew mark but none of the people like Sam Neela or Ray or Morris knew Greene.
I wish he would’ve asked about Romano, and they’d be like, “A helicopter fell on him..”

Always bothered me that when Carol asks who everyone is every single person other than Neela says their name, city and hospital. Neela just says Chicago. Would have been nice to have seen Carol's reaction to hearing the name county general.
