    I was a child bride. Married to an older man at 15 years old. I became pregnant a couple months later because he refused to use protection, nor did he allow me to start birth control. I was a mother at 16.
    I endured pressure from being told that it worked for my mother, as she was a child bride too and a mother at 16.
    I was also told by my father that because I was a girl that I was only good for one thing and that he would get rid of me as soon as he could.
    Being continuously bullied , It came easy to fall into a relationship with an abusive, manipulative, unfaithful narcissist.
    I was forced to quit school because I was a liability to the school as a pregnant teenager. So my dreams of becoming a nurse were no longer possible.
    Always being told that because I am too young to make decisions on my own over my own body , I ended up in a situation where I was considered as property.
    It took me 8 years to make a way out of that physically, mentally and emotional prison. I had to get my three kids out of that dangerous situation. I couldn't stay and have them witness their mother being abused as well as his inability to get and keep a job. I wanted better for them.
    There are so many ways I was controlled, and he was so manipulative that he would disable my car so I was not able to get food and what my kids needed. We lived outside of a small mountain town and there was no public transportation back then, no shelters and police didn't care if he beat me. One asked " what did you say to him to make him do this to you?" He was in a drunken rage and frequently came home from the bar to beat me for the rest of the night until he passed out. Then ask me what happened to me and why was face swollen? Then crying and saying that he was sorry.
    .There are so many things that go on in a child marriage that no one will ever know about. It has to be stopped. We are humans, not property.
    Thank you for reading my story. I hope for a deeper understanding of the dynamic of child marriage.

      Biologically, a person is an adult when they are able to reproduce. The decision to set the age of 18 as the age of legal "adulthood" (or "majority" or whatever the term might be) is arbitrary, and a legal fiction. When discussing morality, we should take reality - including biological reality - into account. We should not base moral debate solely on what the laws say.

    • @Shalyn-ln9tu
      @Shalyn-ln9tu 2 ปีที่แล้ว +805

      @@omp199 With how society is run, they are minors until 18. It's not a fiction when it's running that way. People like you are the reason child marriages still exist. There are females that start their period at the age of 6, should she be considered an adult even though her body has a very slim chance of surviving as well as not having the knowledge of life in general to be able to understand? The answer is obviously no.
      How our society runs, is how life is. It protects those who are vulnerable.
      Yes, everything is a construct, but it's what keeps out chaos.
      Laws are made based on the morality of society. This is basic Sociology.

    • @omp199
      @omp199 2 ปีที่แล้ว +40

      @@Shalyn-ln9tu You need to keep a level head and maintain a conceptual distinction between biology, ethics, and law. Can you maintain that conceptual distinction or not? You can't make any coherent statement in any academic discipline, including sociology, if you treat a statement of biology as a statement of ethics, or _vice versa._
      If a person can reproduce at the age of six, then they _are_ a biological adult at the age of six. That is not a statement of law or of ethics or of "how things should be". It is simply a plain fact.
      What I am saying is that we should take facts into account when discussing biology, ethics, and law. That should not be a controversial position.

    What I love about this aside from her standing up to her abusive husband is how the medical professionals respected her decision to not reproduce. Whether we’re unmarried in our twenties without children, married in our forties with children or anywhere in between, we women have a hard time being taken seriously when we say “I don’t want any(more) kids.” Religious or not, people think women are destined for motherhood and anyone who doesn’t want that is “confused” or will “change their mind”. That needs to change.

    • @amandabrittenden
      @amandabrittenden 2 ปีที่แล้ว +365

      My mother in law told me I would change my mind and that not having children is "selfish"... My husband and I have discussed having children but simply, neither of us want to. At the end of the day we would be the ones raising a child not her, why should we breed when it's not what we want just so she can have a baby to fuss over? I love my husband and was prepared to "change my mind" because I felt like I was denying him of being a father. But, like me he doesn't want it. I have my reasons such as mental health conditions that I would not want to subject my potential child to. For example, my sister in law has psychosis and one of her daughters, my niece, has inherited it! It is a nightmare for them and the whole family. My family all have some type of mental illness and it all comes from my mother's father. I don't want anyone especially my own (theoretical) children to go through the mental torment I have experienced over my lifetime! Somehow though, it's all my fault, I'm being selfish and we should just breed regardless of any of that. It's not as if there aren't enough people on the planet... So to all the mothers-in-law out there, before you insult your son's wife take a minute to really think about who's being selfish in this situation...

    • @thejessifar4619
      @thejessifar4619 2 ปีที่แล้ว +175

      I agree with everything you’ve said. There are plenty of “selfish” reasons people have for becoming parents but no one thinks of that or realizes it until it’s too late. Not wanting to subject a kid to being raised by parents who don’t want them is the responsible thing to do. Plus, like you said, we have enough (well, too much) people on this planet anyway. We’re just balancing out those who have large families with a bunch of kids lol.

      Even for the women who've jumped through all the hoops required to get their tubes tied, 40% (!) those who got the procedure done at 18 - 24 end up regretting it and wishing they could have had biological children. Those are terrible odds for something as serious as permanent sterilization. And these are young women who worked extremely hard to get the procedure done -- presumable they were more than 100% sure they didn't want kids at the time. At 30 - 34+, the chance of regret drops close to zero because you really know what you want.
      It's a terrible idea to make permanent decisions about fertility in your teens and early twenties, and it's ridiculous to think that doctors would give a 15 year old a hysterectomy when she explicitly says she wants one because she's currently in a bad situation. If she's removed from that situation, she may very well want children, and if she doesn't, she can always get sterilized later.

I was convinced by him and everyone else that if I left, I'd have to leave without my kids due to me being under age. That's why a lot of kids stay with their spouses in child/marriage situations. As soon as I was of age and had a solid plan, I left with my kids and never looked back. The disgusting part is, these marriages are still happening today.

As an Emancipated young woman, it's her right to decide what happens to her body, more so when choosing to have a hysterectomy, to avoid EVER getting cancer and dying before she grows out of being a teenager. Did you not get that she didn't want kids to him, never did, so this was her way of getting back at him and taking control of her own life and being able to live for the rest of her life. Not every woman 14 or not, will always want children. IF she had reached the age of 19-20, 5-6 years from her being 14, she would have died from having cancer anyway, so it was and does become a matter of life and death for her, they caught it at stage 1, not stage 4 when it's too late. no offence, think before you ask your question, the answer was there all along.

      @@cynthiabiel7714 Unfortunately it is. I've seen a whole TV report about that, many exemples about some statesin US where a girl gets pregnant and with their parents consent, they can get married to the father of their child. In the report I saw, they were 13, 14, legaly raped because under the age of consent, but forcfully married to save, I guess, the family reputation. The ones I heard about also happend where, I quote, "They don't want us to get an abortion but they look down on us if we are pregnant teens". So they marry them, not problem anymore right. So if you can marry a pregnant young teen without her consent but with her parent's, I guess it's also possible to marry one who's not pregnant.
      That's how you get uneducated very young mothers who will consent to that kind of madness for their own daughters later. The best way to keep authority over someone who is supposed to be your equal.

    honestly the weirdest thing to me in this scene (because unfortunately child marriage is common) is that they didn't treat her the way they would an adult besides her being emancipated to make her own medical decisions. if you had this same situation with an adult woman you'd expect the doctors to take action against her husband because what he's doing is domestic abuse. The supervisors acted like his behavior was lawful just because child marriage is legal. Obviously, child marriages are inherently abusive, if only because the child bride is being raped, but his abuse went beyond that. he acted like he owns her.

      There's no legal grounds, though. Yes, it's obvious he's an abuser, but they have no evidence he's beating her, just manipulating her, which is, sadly, not against the law. Legally, she's an adult in the eyes of the law, and if she doesn't want to press charges - or doesn't feel she can - they're stuck in "everything's technically legal" territory.
