Noice! You could also use a valve stem with the valve core removed at the top for a vent ... then you can still cap it off when you fill it up!

Well explained and a very good idea. My old tank is rusted, with pin holes. I need to make one for my 1.2KW petrol generator, Will give it a try. I may use 5L water bottle. Thank You
