"Germans from this era constantly made fun of Americans for wanting cupholders in their cars" Actually I have never seen anybody using them for the reason they have been designed and so I can't disagree with those Germans
The new one I actually like for looking so muscular, as it should. But this E34 has such a wonderful touch of elegance to that muscular nature that the modern ones just ignore.
Those wheels are the same as the turbine wheels. Interesting fact and you can rock 3 different looks with the same wheel. Turbine, throwing stars and plain 5 spoke. All the same wheel!! Never done before or after. I’m surprised you didn’t mention that amazingly cool fact!!
I'm german and own an E34 with no cupholders. Sometimes it gets annoying to not be able to store a water bottle in a convenient place when taking longer journeys.
lukas haselmann Yeah but ashtrays were and are still way more common in European cars than American cars. Behind the wheel, Americans like to drink their water/coffee while Europeans like to smoke 🤷🏽♂️
As an European i cant understand why would you drink something in a car? We go to the bars and stuff to have a drink and chill. If we go on a longer drive then we usually keep our drinks in bottles.
lukas haselmann He wasn’t saying you’re hypocrites simply for having ashtrays in your vehicles as plenty of American cars did. He was bemoaning the “fat unhealthy American” stereotype you guys perpetuate via the cup holder when your German-built vehicles have ashtrays in every door - smoking isn’t exactly healthy either. You see the issue? So he’s pointing out the cognitive dissonance of the chain smoking German driving around thinking, “Those unhealthy Americans with their cup holders!”
@@esrefpivcic4781 I don't see why you Europeans always feel the need to gloat about how you "don't drink in your cars" it's not a big deal to drink a bottle of water in your car. Or perhaps, I don't need the cupholder to drink out of, perhaps just to transport a drink safely.
Ešref Pivčić There’s plenty of times we stop at gas stations and get a drink to take home, and it’s convenient to have a cupholder to put it in rather than hold it in my lap.... We dont necessarily drink in the car that much, unless you’re a passenger. Or, you have some coffee you want to finish but you’re needing to head somewhere? Can set it in the cupholder and take it with you/sip out of it as well (after moving it from a mug to a bottle obviously)
Something that I'm sad Doug didn't know, but that honestly almost nobody seems to anyway, there's a way to hit a certain button combo on the driver information center next to the radio and see various information about various stats on the car that aren't displayed by the buttons that are there. If I remember right, you could push the 1000 and 10 buttons at the same time and enter a code to get it in to that mode. There were things in there like language setting, current fuel consumption in L/100km and Liters per Hour, fuel range, current speed, and a few different sensor outputs for troubleshooting. Really cool stuff!
The hidden menu. Pretty well known to E36 owners with the OBC. I like the UBatt test, which shows onboard voltage. Always handy to check if the alternator is still charging the battery.
This car is special (i'm biased since I own one). A few things to note on this car. The steering wheel is a 93 wheel, it was not offered in 91. The side mirrors on this car were upgrades. The white on white (vs white on black two tone was an option on white cars). The throwing stars did not come with this car originally in 91. This car is one of the first sedans to offer dual climate control. Finally, they are still super expensive to maintain, correctly. Parts are rare.
I found one of these for next to nothing 5 years ago. When I reached out to my mechanic about owning one he told me to walk. Because he knew I couldn't afford to maintain it. :( Oh well maybe one day I will own one of my dream BMWs. (:
There are a few more „features“ hidden there: The rev counter range goes to 8000 reflecting the capabilities of the engine. All other gasoline E34 had a 7000 rpm counter. The instant gasoline consumption Instrument in the tach was deleted for a oil thermometer because that delicate engine should not be raced before the oil was warm Increased speedometer range but the car was limited to 250 kph. In Europe the M5 had a 300 kph speedometer, normal cars max 260 kph. That is a sign of the speeds that car could travel at. There is still a convention among major German brands to limit regular cars to 250 kph. That convention came up in the 80ies with cars like the M5 or 12 cyl 750 emerging that would go way beyond 250 / 155 mph and would likely have been driven on the Autobahn at that speed posing some danger to the average Beatle or Golf maxing out at half that speed. In the glovebox you might have found a little flashlight that is being recharged while in its holder - a nice supplement to the key. Actually there was an optional automatic a/c that had exactly those on/off buttons for air flow - separate sets for passenger and driver each. So the passenger could have his feet heated while the driver could have ice cold air blowing in his face. Hidden in there is a „digital check control“ that notified the driver if a bulb in the right brake light was blown for example. It would also tell the driver to refill washer fluid and many more messages. And so on...
I remember long ago when these were new, being passed on the highway by a BMW while the driver was on the phone... A corded one no less. I thought it was so cool...
At least some automakers are giving us an option for a manual gearbox, to be specific, the Aston Martin Vantage AMR, 992 Porsche 911 Carrera 2S/4S, and.... uhhh.... umm..... idk. I actually struggled too think of even a handful of new manual car's, and that's just sad....
The big air vent on the dash is to defrost the windshield. The air vents on the doors are there to defrost the area on the window by the side mirrors so you can see something.
7:44 actually, BMW's infotainment system started way earlier with the first 6 series back in 1975. It showed status of head light, tail light, brake light, light for number plate, oil level, coolant level and water fluid. While simultaneously being one of the most beatufil car ever built
I had an `85 E28 with the overhead (over the rear view mirror) infotainment system. You had to press the "check" button every time you started the car so the vehicle knew you had checked all the potential codes before driving off. A bright "CHECK" light on your dash would flash until you pressed it. That on board computer was never broken on any of the 3 E28's I owned...made insanely well.

e34s are insanely popular and sought after in the tuning car scene in Europe, mainly due to the bulletproof engines and drivetrain. The early 525s m50, first gen m60s (4L v8) and m5's s36, s38are incredibly tuning friendly and turned into real powerhouses with forced induction and e85.
You must be young... Kids smoked, in the 90's. like 80%, usually starting around age 14... totally normal, back then... It lead to the exact same campaign you see against vaping, except it was against smoking, back then. You see the "Truth" commercials against "Juuling"? That group was formed BY Philip Morris (no less), to educate children about the dangers of smoking. Since the teen smoking rate is so low anymore, now "Truth" targets Vaping, instead of smoking. As they're owned by Philip Morris, they say "Juuling" in the Truth commercials, instead of "Vaping," because Juul has taken away the largest portion of Philip Morris" customers, with their Vaping products. So Philip Morris is using "Truth" to demonize their competitor Juul, by calling it "Juuling," rather than the correct term "Vaping." Specifically so the parents look for Juul products to deny their children (in hopes that when their parents take away their vaporizor, they'll need the nicotene, and go buy a pack of smokes, instead. As cigarrettes are easier to attain).
...I'm back... actually, it was so abundant, that congress banned Cigarrette TV commercials, animated tobacco mascots, and flavored tobacco, SPECIFICALLY because amaerican parents considered teen smoking an epidemic. They formed groups that petitioned congress, over the matter. Ultimately congress decided those three practices did, in fact, target youths, and banned them. All three bans still stand, to this day... Latr boss...
The E34 is my favorite sedan ever. In fact I own a 525i for 6 years now and I did some M5 upgrades to it. Sadly, the prices for an M5 even in Europe are too high to make them worth it for me. Doug, you should really consider reviewing Alpina cars. The E34 Alpina Bi-turbo is a very special car, on par with the RUF Yellowbird and it was the fastest production sedan at the time. A truly mad car.
bakerfrog probably both! It is a really nice car! And it is on his brand new car auction website. He won’t be negative, that for sure! And that is normal.
I remember like eight years ago when I was looking to buy an e34 M5. Here in Sweden you could get one for around $8000 for a sedan and $10,000 for a touring, and that was a nice example. Today, you cant find one for under $20,000. I havent seen any touring for sale here in Sweden for years now.
Ya the m sport takes away from the true purpose built M cars. I think it waters everything down and doesn't make normal people appreciated them as much
19:00 The problem with cars that open the hood forward is that it is more dangerous in the event of a collision, as the hood is fitted close to the headlights and locked close to the windshield, so in a frontal collision the hood does not dent, so comes whole in the occupants of the vehicle.
Hey my dad had a 525i with the wire wheels in white in the 90's best car ever according to my entire family! I remember the window switches and stuff so much watching this
14:35 I've read somewhere before that the seatbelts being in the middle was a safety feature. It helped preventing the rear seated passengers to bang their heads to eachother. Kinda interesting these old skool simple yet effective features

Ashtrays in German cars: You NEED them if you traveling with 200+ on the Autobahn! Imagine drinking a Coke at this speed...hahaha [Edit]: Coke = Coca Cola . Just to make sure that real petrol heads get it as it was meant ;)
I've never understood the American fixation on cup holders. Why would it make sense to drink anything in a car? Clearly you don't get dehydrated by sitting in a air conditioned car. If you drink something, you are going to have to piss, which is kind of a problem when you are driving a car. Unless it is a short distance you are driving, but why would you then risk spilling the drink on the car interior and/or yourself while driving rather than just wait until you get where every you are going and drink there?
Yeees this brings back some childhood memories. Not an M5 obviously, but my dad had a white 535i with the 3.0L straight 6. Those ashtrays were a weird source of entertainment, me and my sister just liked to open and close them endlessly on a journey to keep ourselves from getting bored. And I badly burnt my thumb on the rear cigarette lighter.
Older cars get bad mileage because they weren't designed for the 10% ethanol gas we use today... Case in point, I used to have a little Ford Escort with a 5 speed... Before ethanol I was getting 35-37mpg highway... After the switch to ethanol, I was lucky to get 30.
You're gonna be going about 2000-3000 rpm even in 6th gear while cruising. That's sky high compared to modern standards, and you have to be around 4000 rpm to get the torquey bit of the engine to overtake.
In his coach door video when he was plugging Cars and Bids, I thought "Wait. I haven't seen an M5 video." Finally, best birthday present I've got so far
I remember driving an e39 M5 and thought this is the most amazing BMW ever. That's because I drove e36 and e46 M3 models. Then I drove an e34 M5 and was blown away with BMW inline 6, M engines. "Germans from this era constantly made fun of Americans for wanting cupholders in their cars" Actually I have never seen anybody using them for the reason they have been designed and so I can't disagree with those Germans
“Nothing strange or unusual in here.”
“Although...”
I think the design of M5 e34 is just perfect, it looks just so lightweight and so sporty, and it doesn't screems "I'M M5!!!!"
The new one I actually like for looking so muscular, as it should. But this E34 has such a wonderful touch of elegance to that muscular nature that the modern ones just ignore.
doesn't, not diesn't
There's beauty in its subtlety.

I'm still scratching my head when Doug puts focus on cupholders in literally every video. I'm German.
In Europe nobody gives a flying f... for cupholders. Those are only of some importance in huge continent countries with ridiculous speed limits.
Doug needs to drink. Maybe he is dehydrated ? Who knows ?
I don't really get it either. I'm always able to empty the cup before I continue the ride, I don't want half-emtpied cups anywhere in my car.
lol having cupholders is a godsend when you take any trip with little children
I'm german and own an E34 with no cupholders. Sometimes it gets annoying to not be able to store a water bottle in a convenient place when taking longer journeys.

I have one.
6:03 what do you mean "germans from that era"? we still make fun of you for cupholders.
lukas haselmann Yeah but ashtrays were and are still way more common in European cars than American cars.
Sounds like a pain in the arse car that'll cost more to maintain than the car is worth.
Good details
Too bad about the ugly body kit on this one
I found one of these for next to nothing 5 years ago. When I reached out to my mechanic about owning one he told me to walk. Because he knew I couldn't afford to maintain it. :( Oh well maybe one day I will own one of my dream BMWs. (:
I had one too. Hated it when people took off the “throwing star” portion center piece of the wheels. Looked hideous!
Among all the words I never expected to hear from Doug, "Clout" is one of them
This is the comment I’m looking for, how has noone said this yet
Clout is a word, not some new slang for the kids. So, not really.
don't forget him also saying, "that's pretty boss"
fyhfb ass Correct, Doug has an extensive vocabulary as he is educated and has been a writer for many years.
@@notDonaldFagen I know, but its a word that has been all but phased out in any other context. When else do you ever hear it?
There are a few more „features“ hidden there:
The rev counter range goes to 8000 reflecting the capabilities of the engine. All other gasoline E34 had a 7000 rpm counter.
The instant gasoline consumption Instrument in the tach was deleted for a oil thermometer because that delicate engine should not be raced before the oil was warm
Increased speedometer range but the car was limited to 250 kph.
🙏
I remember long ago when these were new, being passed on the highway by a BMW while the driver was on the phone... A corded one no less. I thought it was so cool...

7:44 actually, BMW's infotainment system started way earlier with the first 6 series back in 1975. It showed status of head light, tail light, brake light, light for number plate, oil level, coolant level and water fluid. While simultaneously being one of the most beatufil car ever built

Yeah, that 1991 trip computer had basically the same features as my 1983 Toyota, nothing special there.
Actually, the first infotainment system was found on the 1986 Buick Riviera. It even had a touchscreen!

e34s are insanely popular and sought after in the tuning car scene in Europe, mainly due to the bulletproof engines and drivetrain. The early 525s m50, first gen m60s (4L v8) and m5's s36, s38are incredibly tuning friendly and turned into real powerhouses with forced induction and e85.

A cigarette lighter and two ashtrays in back "so that your kids can smoke"
lmao

So we’re not gonna talk about how the owner was getting 13.7 MPG 😂
Older cars get bad mileage because they weren't designed for the 10% ethanol gas we use today... Case in point, I used to have a little Ford Escort with a 5 speed... Before ethanol I was getting 35-37mpg highway... After the switch to ethanol, I was lucky to get 30.
