I've owned my Acura TL for 5 years. The body engine and transmission was in perfect quality when i bought it. Drive it up to 300k miles. No issues besides basic maintenance. I bought it used at a really hard time in my life and NEEDED a car. This car was great. I know they say these cars have a lot of transmission problems... I've never experienced it though.
Yeah - the TL and CL of this generation were fantastic. The automatic transmissions had some pretty big issues, but w/ the AV6 Accord transmission swap, they'll run forever and run great.
I had a 2001 Acura CL Type S. One of my favorite cars I’ve owned. What a machine! It was my 2nd Acura of a five over the years including a 1992 Acura Legend coupe, which I loved. Wish I still had the CL. Back then, Acura loaded those cars up with options for a reasonable price. Great memories! I did avoid the tranny issues thankfully.
I have a 2003 3.0 Liter accord. My trans went out. I had it rebuilt at 160,000 and had the case bushed with steel and it fixed the chronic problems they had. I had it fixed before it blew, and the tech said if you get it done while the car still drives, it can be fixed, but if it blows, it's ruined. The. main shafts originally rode in aluminum, and that would fail. It was a 5 speed Maya, or Baya I think. Whatever a 2003 accord has. I have had many cars, but I think the J Series 2 door cars are probably the best overall cars I have ever been around. This Acura is nice.
I'm a 215k on my BYBA 5AT Odyssey, needing a rebuild sooner than later. I've been looking into getting the case bearings reinforced with steel as I hear thats why they whines like a supercharger
@@BernonCars didn't know ur accord ended up having transmission issues will have to go into the archives haha Mine has been whining for a good 7-8 years a week ago po740 CEL popped up now even whines in park super loud on cold start still shifting somewhat decent.
Reminds me of my 04 TL manual w 300k miles I ended up selling to my friend it was so quiet and didn’t make any shakes or vibrations everyone who’s ever driven it turned the key while it was on because it was so quiet they thought it was off 💀💀💀 if only you could see it
I would like to contest the point of the H4 and H5 automatics being horrible. They're fine in the four cylinders, the failures only started popping up frequently with the introduction of the V6 Accord, and reached a fever pitch with the 7th gens, which were obliterating them. A lot of that was an underbuilt cooler, the same as the 4 cylinder Accord, as well as not upgrading... Anything inside the gearbox or differential for the extra power. The million mile Accord that Honda owns now is a 1991 with the original H4 automatic still working great. It's just a strange non planetary gear system that requires more frequent fluid changes with HONDA FLUID specifically.
I absolutely loved this generation CL! My mother owned one in black with the spoiler. Stunning car, but didn't last long though. 🤣🤣 Also, that first gear whine is everything.
I bought a 2001 Acura TL one month ago from an old gentleman Vietnam War veteran, a Christian guy ( so am I ). And he has cancer. We prayed, and had a great conversation. four door 3.2 170k miles, new tires, new exhaust, timing belt done at 120k it sat for six months, and started right up. Transmission was replaced at 60k Its gonna need some further tlc, but its my first Acura after owning a couple Honda Preludes and a couple civics. And a Scion xB and other Toyotas. 😊
That's awesome, positive energy to both of you. Glad the transmission was already redone. Fantastic cars and they still look good to this day. They look great in any color, the forest green and the red are my particular favorites
@@BernonCars I have a 2000 TL, Black on Tan. not original transmission but it was replaced under warrant. Im at 273k. Car runs fantastic. it was even run on 87 for the majority of its life and there is minimal wear on the engine.
Consider the TL type S rims of the same era, 17inch would look very clean. They're not very expensive at all, as far as rims are concerned. Edit: They also came on a few obscure honda trims, so there's a decent supply out there.
The rear passenger wheel is different from the others Im glad you noticed at 14:08 The CL Type S and TL Type S wheels of this era looked very similar but were actually different Can the 06-07 accord trans be used in the Type s version?
transmission cooler.. needed and change the fluid every 5k.. can't stress enough.. unfortunately these years auto trans sucked.. but if you do what I said it will last forever
@@BernonCarsThat’s a FANTASTIC deal, even considering the tranny swap. Love your channel and the enthusiasm you have for these classic vehicles. The auto transmissions in all the J series needs to be recalled!!! From the Honda Odyssey to those😢

It aged beautifully to say the least. Good pick my man.
