      I like low profiles up until I hit a pothole with my alloys wrapped in 225/45-R18s. Cracked the wheel and insurance deductible was a grand. Thankfully, they were oem wheels and it came with a full sized spare, but it was a cheaper finish and so I had to replace the wheel and tire. Firestone Firehawk GT2s were not cheap when they were new. And a wheel from a salvage yard that had a couple scuffs was still $200. I would've bought aftermarket wheels, but it would have killed the resell value.

      Last winter I switched to the crossclimate suv (prior gen) tires and they are great. Saves me the hassle from needing to do the 2x/yr tires switch.
      These tires perform much better in the snow than regular all season tires - at least I was able to drive up my local snow covered hill last winter in my fwd minivan while a awd Audi was stuck. But these are no comparison to the prior blizzaks I had in the snow.
      However, we only get snows 3-4x a yr, so 95% of the time the roads are either dry or wet, not covered w snow, which these tires perform better than typical winter tires. Overall, I’m happy w them, except for tire noise.

      @@Alex.AL_26 I totally agree - it was just too much of a hassle to change out the tires 2x/yr, have a separate dedicated winter tire/wheel setup and find limited storage space in my garage to store the off season tires/wheels. I still think winter tires are best in the snow, but now I'm getting older, i've succumbed to the philosophy that's it's safest not to drive when the roads are bad.

    In an effort to reduce expense (I have 3 vehicles to keep on the road), I ran the Nokian WR G3 (All Weather) for 2 winters and one summer (11/2016-6/2018) in Northern Ohio on a Nissan Versa. I was not impressed. It was marginally better than good all season tires and only lasted about 18,000 miles. Maybe on a heavier vehicle they would perform better but I doubt they'll last longer. Went back to Blizzak for winter and Hankook Optimo H724 (affordable All Season) for summer. Last year, I left the Hakooks on until December and in the first couple of snow falls they felt almost as predictable as the Nokian (AllWeather). I'm sure with time All Weather technology will get better, but for the time being I'll continue to run all seasons in the summer and winter tires for winter.
    Please note, Nokian makes some great winter tires. It was the "All Weather" tires that I think missed the mark.

    • @rereg543
      @rereg543 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, I tried out Vredestein Quatrac 5 all weather tires and the Nokian WR G3 and neither were perceptibly better than good all seasons. I'm convinced it's just marketing hype.

      I think the stopping performance is improved mainly. The Nokian's were tested in Consumer reports as Having better performance than cheaper winter tires.

    • @joeydelgado6119
      @joeydelgado6119 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @RobBilton personally, I believe in my personal experience, especially after paying premium dollars out of my own pocket, over any review. The winter performance gains were negligible at best in all metrics, including acceleration, braking, and lateral grip. Add to that a very quick wearing tread and it's easy to see that although initially more expensive, having a winter set and summer/all season set off tires is the better solution. With that being said for someone that rarely drives, maybe putting 5k miles per year on their car, it might make a little more sense. Please note that I've been using winter tires since 1994 when I was first introduced to them in Alaska. At that time I was running studded Good Year Ultra Grips and the (at the time) manager of the local Firestone was running a prototype of the Blizzak WS50 which we rallied/tested thru isolated backroads to compare the 2 (the Blizzak was vastly superior). I've tried many different winter tires since then, including some more affordable options and can say with confidence that the best combo for colder climates is a decent all season tire with good wet performance for summer and a dedicated winter tire for winter. The tread compound needed for good winter traction melts in hot summer asphalt, and the harder compounds good for even wear patterns are way too stiff as the temps drop below 45°F. The addition of silica to the compound has helped with increasing traction in wet and cold, but realistically it's not enough to bridge the gap. Based on my personal experience, the cost/ benefit ratio is not there when a good, well siped, all season provides nearly identical performance with much longer life. Or for just a little bit more money (depending on tire size) you can have a dedicated winter tire and an affordable all season tire for summer. Currently, the Nokian All-Weather WR-G3 were not the Jack-of-all-trades I was expecting. Will the WR-G4 be that much better? I doubt it, but time will tell.

      @romaingallard8385 3 ปีที่แล้ว

  • @anthonymrskipt9252

    You guys didn’t mention what tire size you have on your winter set up. My stealth performance (a third model?) came with the same 255/45 19s on Gemini wheels as the “regular” LR. The rated range is the same as the regular LR, so Jason’s math and Tesla’s would appear to be about the same. I went full winter tire with Nokian Hakkepeliitta R3s. I have not run them long enough to notice a difference in range, but I do think I’ve lost a bit. I also run my tires at a slightly reduced pressure, which improves the ride (and grip, I suspect) at the expense of a little range. I’m really curious to see how these “all weather” tires work. One thing to note, modern winter tires are actually made with a hydrophilic rubber that actually sticks to the snow, creating a band of snow around the tire which actually sticks better to the snow on the ground. Hydrophobic rubber pushes water and snow away, which works better in the rain, but not in the snow (that what M+S tires use). As I understand it, running narrower winter tires with the modern hydrophobic compound does not actually improve winter performance as a result. I’d be curious what your tire guys are saying to you about that as I always see that comment, but thinks it’s no longer applicable.

    The wheel design plays a big role in aerodynamics of these EV vehicles..
    The tire's contact patch and compound play a big part in roll resistance.
    Going with a smaller Tire in overall height will cause the motor to run at a little faster RPM to maintain the same speeds as before and that can actually cause EV vehicles to be more efficient going down the road unlike gas or diesel powered cars and trucks.

    My question is can't you find tires that are gonna fit 21'' Model Y P wheels ?

    • @cyronader
      @cyronader 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Michelin doesn't make crossclimate 2 tires for the model Y (neither long range nor performance). The closet size Michelin makes for the 20" crossclimate 2 is 255/45R20 However, the factory specs for model y with 20" wheels is 255/40R20. The aspect ratio is off by 5 which is a about 1/2" difference in tire height. This can throw off the speedometer by a few miles. This doesn't mean you can't get them but many tire shops configuration sites, tirerack for example, wont list crossclimate 2 as an option since it doesn't match the factory aspect ratio requirement.

I am of course very curious about this new type, the All-Weather tire, and, I'm hoping that in the future you might get around to reviewing Michelin's "Green" tires that claim better rolling resistance, better gas mileage and a few other things. I wish you success in advance on these reviews & tests, and, thank you! ;-)

    Too bad they did not mention the tire size, load and speed rating.
    From the video, I read the Michelin tire size to be 255/50R19 103V tires. Michelin does not make a CrossClimate 2 in 255/45R19 size but does make 255/50R19 103V and 255/40R19 100V (note lower load ratings).
    I dont get the smaller tire claim. Except for the MYP rear tires, the width is the same 255 mm. I calculate the 255/50R19 tire diameter is larger at 29" vs 28" for standard 19 and 21" rim front tires.
    For reference - My MYLR with 19" gemini wheels came with 255/45R19 104W tires.
    MYP with 21" wheels comes with 255/32R21 Front and 275/35R21 Rear tires.
    The Tesla Model Y 19" Gemini Wheel and Pirelli Winter Tire Package (not compatible with MY performance) uses 255/45R19 104V Pirelli WINTER SOTTOZERO 3 Tires.

    I'm curious if the overall diameter is not the same? And it didn't seem to be isn't the speed going to be registered incorrectly? It's going to show you going faster than you actually are it'll also change the effective gear ratio . The car should be significantly quicker accelerating if it has enough grip but have a lower top speed. I wonder why you didn't pick a tire that was tall enough to equal the total diameter of the original tires?
    Or maybe you did and I missed something.
    I really do not understand why Tesla insists on putting these enormous unbelievably heavy wheels and tire combinations on what is supposed to be an efficient vehicle. There's nothing wrong with 18s and a taller Tire. It'll ride better it'll be quieter and you won't spend three grand on new rims when you hit a pothole.

    The 3PMSF, as the industry calls this pictogram guarantees these winter tires’ traction is at least 10-per-cent superior compared to all-season tires when put through the ASTM F1805 test. that's right: 10 per cent better traction.The symbol says nothing about superior performance in low temperatures. This test is conducted on medium-packed-snow surfaces, and only while accelerating in a straight line. Nothing, again, is said or tested or established or measured about accelerating on ice - more common in cities - or on 8 inches of fluffy snow. Many winter tires in the market today achieve levels approaching 130 per cent [better than all-season]. I have an all-weather set on my F-150 for summer only. I switch to REAL winter tire because we have real winter here in Canada.
